I have a few LL Bean jackets that have been some of the best I've ever had, most of which have been discontinued to or altered significantly (from excellence to, potentially different or slightly greater excellence). I also like jackets that provide longer coverage, as opposed to those that stop at/around your waist but all my jackets of that lengtht were all made for colder temps and more severe weather. The Mountain Classic is a delightful lighter weight, thinner jacket but it's build with the great fit, perfect hood, and a good number of pockets like your snow jacket might offer. I love the flannel lining and it has a drawstring cord around the middle on the inside. It zips up the front and has a button flap that covers the length of the zipper. It stows/packs easily and is nicely wind and water proof up based on my experiences with it. I love the Iron Blue color which looks great. A+, this one.

Bought for husband as Christmas gift. He loves the coat! Ordered an Xtra Lg and it fit perfectly.
For reference, he is 5' 9" and weighs 205. There's enough room for a layer underneath and the material repels rain and wind. Got it on sale and it was a great buy. Highly recommend.

Very comfortable, it keeps me warm but not to the point where I am sweating. The sleeves are the perfect length and the rain resistance is amazing. The only issue I have with it was the color selection. I was looking for something a little more red.

Bought this summer while on sale from MOA store, to wear as a primary jacket in fall/early winter (Duluth/Lake Superior north shore area) and it has not disappointed.
I wore it along the lake shore one day when a storm was blowing in, gale winds driving the heavy splash of the waves up over the lakewalk, and I got blasted directly a couple of times, leaving my jeans soaked. I expected there to be some bleed-thru in the jacket as it's billed as water-RESISTANT and not waterPROOF, but there was none! (Had hood up & cinched). Great news for using it in the rain.
The cut and fit are excellent (5'5" and currently ~150lbs), and I get compliments on the style all the time. Size small will layer over a regular hoodie comfortably, and you will need to layer if you expect to wear it in winter temps around or below freezing the built-in insulation is fall/spring weight 1/2 lined flannel. The sleeves are slick inside which is awesome for pulling on over other long sleeves.
It has a double zipper (a MUST on a long coat IMO), and one large zippered outer left chest pocket. Three small features I'd like to see (and would have paid more for): a zippered inner chest pocket on the right side (there are no interior pockets at all), pit zips for venting, and a single snap on each of the side handwarmer pockets to keep gloves from falling out.
All together a real winner of a jacket! It's 3-season and those seasons are spring/summer/fall. This isn't a deep cold winter jacket but probably would be enough all winter somewhere it doesn't get so bitterly cold as MN.
LL Bean, please bring a store to Duluth MN!

This is a really nice wind layer with useful pockets, no insulation, reminiscent of the 60/40 jackets of the 70's and 80's. I'm 5'8" and 145 lbs. usually wearing a medium. I got a large for layering and am glad for it. Rain repellant, water beads up but I would not count on it for an extended downpour.

The grandchild of the Baxter State Parka and every bit as servicable as a three season outer layer with ample room for a good fleece or down lineer.

Weather forecast calls for rain and need to walk? This is your jacket!!! If it is really cold I layer with vest underneath. Fabulous jacket. The hood was a bonus!

Classic style 3 season coat. The part-wool lining adds just a tiny bit of warmth, but it is not really for cold weather. Water beads up and runs right off. Plenty of useful pockets, including side entry hand warmers behind the patch pockets. I would prefer a flapped patch pocket on the chest, rather than the vertical zipper side entry one. A very functional, good looking, comfortable coat.

Perfect fit and great materials. The color was more of a burnt-orange than what looked more red in the picture.

I got this for my son in law as he loves everything LL Bean. He fits the size medium perfectly every time. This was no exception. The hood is quite generous and has flaps to hold it in place. My son in law is about 5 7 and weighs around 160 pounds.

I've read most of the reviews of the Mountain Classic and the Baxter '82 and tried both of them. Each jacket has its merits, those that want a heavier jacket should get the Baxter, I needed a good, light, hooded jacket and ended up choosing the Mountain Classic. It's perfect for what it is: a light nylon jacket, with a well fitting hood, great pockets, that's pretty darn close to waterproof (just wore it outside in a torrential downpour and I can still see the rain beaded up on the hood, and my shirt is completely dry). The fabric of the Mountain Classic is kind of crinkly, sure, it's nylon. But that also means it's water resistant while not being very heavy, not much more than a shell, but it keeps me dry. The poly fabric inside the back and hood won't keep you warm below 40-50 degrees by itself; it is not wool, but unlike real wool, it's also really soft.
Based on other people's reviews of the Mountain Classic, tried the Baxter '82 as well, and the Baxter is by far the better coat (despite what some other reviewers of the Baxter '82 have said). It's very well made, from the real wool hood lining to the 3M thinsulate lining the arms and lower half, the shell is some twill/poly blend, so it feels nicer to the hand compared the nylon of the MC. It's a very warm jacket, maybe not warm enough for some, or "as warm as the original from 1982," but I thought it was more than warm enough. I could probably layer well and wear the Baxter throughout an NYC winter. The one complaint I have is that the wool is really scratchy. I mean, it should be, it's real wool, because it's a solid jacket. But I ultimately returned the Baxter and kept the Mountain Classic.
In and out of public transit all the time, what I needed was something that could act as a shell and keep me dry through a rainy fall evening that's also 64 degrees without overheating. When it gets colder, adding layers under the Mountain Classic will probably get me well into early winter. At which point I'll wish I had kept the Baxter as well. But for my location and the time of year, the Mountain Classic is perfect.
