Loved everything about the denim shirt, except the smell. Like others have said, it literally stinks like something dead or rancid! Others said the smell doesn't wash out, so I was afraid to try and risk losing my money. I've been looking for the perfect denim shirt and thought I had found it. What a shame.

I rarely write reviews but the circumstances justify it, I think. This is a pretty shirt with a nice, heavier weight denim. I am a 36D and the Petite Medium fit well across the bust, without any button pulling. I really liked the shirt. The light denim color is a nice neutral. However, I've decided to return it. Unfortunately, this shirt reeks of mothballs. I asked my husband to smell it without suggesting anything - just to make sure it wasn't me. It wasn't. His response: "Ugh, that thing reeks. It smells like mothballs!" Fairly recently, we cleaned out a family member's garage, so we have had an opportunity to reaquaint ourselves with the awful smell. Other reviews noted a smell, but I assumed that it perhaps was just from being in the plastic bag. No. This thing has a strong, undeniable mothball odor. It could be that the manufactuer or distributer is using mothballs or the chemicals associated with mothballs to controls insects. The issue may not affect all colors or all sizes, but whatever it is, it is not acceptable in a brand new piece of clothing. Other may feel comfortable wearing this after washing, assuming it will come out. My experience is that mothball odor will not come out of clothing, even after repeated washings. Another reviewer mentioned that repeated washings didn't fix the issue here. It's an awful, pervasive chemical smell. I would have kept this, except for the smell. Given that others have mentioned the smell too, my advice to LL Bean is to see what's going on with its suppliers. Something isn't right here. I've been shopping at LL Bean for 30 years. I've never gotten anything like this before. Regretfully, I'm returning it, even though the return cost will come out of my pocket to return something that should have arrived odor-free.

I am wearing the denim shirt but am very disappointed - the shirt is poorly made. I washed it before wearing - as instructed. It shrank. The buttons are too large for the button- holes; the threads on the button holes and the buttons are all coming undone and there are hanging threads everywhere. Although usually purchasing from another company, a purchase from LL Bean was an experiment. My mistake. I won't do it again, or recommend it.

The sleeves were too short! I am always excited when a company had sizes for everyone. But unfortunately this shirt just wasn't made tall enough for me. It was also very baggy and more oversized than I would have thought. Just awkward.

Trying to soften this denim, I washed it with every dark load for months. Unsuccessful. Still stiff and uncomfortable.

After waiting for a back order on this shirt, it came. I like the look of it and it fits well, but there are two things that others have mentioned that have me wondering whether to keep it. There is a strong chemical odor. I washed it in cold water, but the odor remains. Also the button holes are too small, making it almost impossible to button or unbutton. Arthritis and wanting to keep my fingernails from breaking make me think that it might be better to return it. Too bad that these issues ruin a most desirable shirt!

I'm returning it. I wanted something hipper, and not so long. I didn't like that white piece of fabric sewn into the neckline.

It shrank and wrinkled badly. Not what I was expecting.

The fabric, which only resembles denim, and which I washed, smells faintly of fish glue. I had to send it back.

This is an average shirt if you can get by the rancid smell. I had to wash it three times (once in hot water) to make the smell tolerable. Other reviewers have mentioned this so not sure why this remains a problem. If you order, size up so you can wash in hot water.

I loved the shirt, initially, but the dye never stopped bleeding and it ended up looking terribly. For the record, I followed the washing instructions recommended by LL Bean. No....just no....for a $59.- shirt.

I liked this shirt, but sadly, I'll be returning this and won't buy any more Bean tops. Good material, looks good when I stand with my arms hanging down at my sides. As soon as I reach forward, the sleeves bind from shoulder to elbow while the material on top of the shoulder puffs up. This seems to happen with most Bean shirts I try. Am I the only woman with shoulders?? Please redesign your sleeves so we can move in them without binding!

I bought the darker blue shirt and liked it overall. However, as a few others noted, it smelled strongly of mothballs. One washing improved it somewhat but I still returned it.

The shirt looked fine and fit fine. BUT it smelled from the overseas shipping or something in the material. I hung it in another room for 2 weeks to no avail. The odor didn't go away. No, I wasn't going to wash a brand new, never worn shirt. I had to send it back.

The fit was as expected, true to size but the material was not what I expected. It was not a soft material and seemed more fitting to wear over a pullover. I returned it.

Both of the denim shirts were cut too tight in the upper arms and across the bottom but fit great across the shoulders and back.I have many LL Bean outer shirts in size large which fit perfectly. I really love denim shirts for the spring and fall but am concerned that buying an XL would be too big. This is very disappointing.

Most of my non work day clothes are LL Bean. Normally I have no problems but this shirt which I got really excited about does not work. I am in between medium and large when it comes to size. I ordered a large and it is snug and it smells like aged cheese. People will say it is the dyes.. I am not sure what to do. Do I keep it and worry about it shrinking in the wash since it is 100% cotton or do I exchange it for XL and be lost in the shirt or just return it and be done with it.. Needless to say I am disappointed

I got the dark wash and the color and material are nice. However the shirt smelled awful. I didn't want to deal with trying to get rid of the smell so sadly returning.

I love this shirt. I do. It fits perfectly. I purchased a large, though I wear a medium, because I want to wear it open over a tee shirt. The PROBLEM is the smell of the fabric! I have washed it once and it hasn't even begun to make a difference and the smell is overwhelming. I can smell it when I walk into the closet where it is hanging. I will keep washing it, for no other reason than I cannot enjoy wearing it until the odor fades.

...the shirt was tight across the shoulder, garment length too short, buttons an unfortunate choice. Fabric fine. These observations based on previous purchases in this size and item; granted t'was many years ago but, still, one hopes for quality through the years. "Classic" is what I was looking for; "contemporary" - meaning lower quality due to disposability in our current society - is what I received. Will be returning this item. Also, chambray shirts seem to be a thing of the past (the buttons on this denim shirt would be appropriate to a chambray shirt).

Shoulders are too narrow, collar is too feminine, pockets are bulky. A denim shirt should be comfy, not fitted and conforming.

It just didn't meet up to my expectations. It looked good online but after I washed it and went to wear it, it looked tired, old and wrinkled and not very attractive. I washed it according to the care instructions too. It's too bad. My search for a nice denium blouse continues. I sent it back.

Shirt came rumpled up in a wrinkled ball, the button holes were stretched and the fabric looked like it had been washed more than once. It also smelled like old perfume.
