This shoes series has narrowed compared to the previous series. Since this company was bought out they have destroyed and neglected the strong customer base that made this shoe company great. Why don't we get an option to select the prior foot shaped wide shoes that fitted us wide footed runner. This is just pathetic. We need series 4 back; I returned this shoes as fast I received it.

Every pair of Altras for two years have fallen apart. 6 pairs. 2 Olympus 5's, 1 boa Mont Blanc, 2 Timp 4's, 1 timp 3. They simply just don't care anymore! They know it's a problem and will not admit their mistakes and fix the problem. They give me a code for a replacement and there are no shoes that I want due to all of the negative reviews and problems with quality.

The Model 5s start off feeling good but after running several long races in them, I can truly say that the added padding in the collar is just too much. It ends up pressing in on the outer foot and after 50,60,100 miles, this develops deep bones bruises. After resting and running on the 4s again, the foot is back to good.

After having bought TWO separate pairs, the soles started to fall off both after under a month of wear. Buy something else.

I ran with these shoes for no more than 180 miles when they all of a sudden had a tear. Thanks to their discretion they use to conclude an outcome they deemed it to be from "normal wear and tear". Ok so that means these shoes may not last you 200 miles. No replacement. No help.

The lugs delaminate very quickly, the laces are too short, and I had issues with the material tearing in the uppers. I also left a review before and it was taken down. Very disappointed in Altra.

The upper on this shoe is weak! 4th time i've put a hole in the toe box by tripping over a small rock. After 5 models and still using the same low-qualilty mesh? I love how the shoes fit and feel but getting tired of returning/throwing away your flimsy shoes.

They look good - like the color and style. But they are very uncomfortable.

loved these shoes the first month i had them; upper wore thru pretty quick but i have been used to altra's durability issues in the past; easily overlooked as the fit and comfort were great. then prior to even 100 miles on the shoe, the tread is delaminating from both shoes in multiple locations, they are essentially unusable within 2 months of purchase and less than 100 miles. i figured surely this was not ok and requested warranty information, was told it is expected wear and tear! i have been wearing solely altra for the past 5 years and will be taking my dollars elsewhere

I've used these shoes for approximately 50 miles. In that time, the topline of the shoes near the ankle have rubbed through, a few different sections of the Vibram sole have pulled away, and the gray section of outsole already shows noticeable wear. I contacted Altra to inquire about the warranty, and apparently this is considered wear and tear and is not covered. Fine by me. I have owned several pairs of Altras in my time and this will be the last.

I have around 250 km on these shoes after about 1 month of easy base building/recovery from my last ultra and the lugs are already coming off both left and right shoes in the exact same way. I was very excited because initially they were exactly what I wanted from altra, their comfy toe box with a little more cushion for higher mileage weeks, but the past 2 pairs of altras I've gotten have basically fallen apart after a month.

I know this is TLDR, but here goes anyway! BACKGROUND I've been with Altra since Olympus 1.5. I still have a couple pairs of Olympus 1.5 around that I use for walking on the beach. I'm probably going to never throw them out. When I first got them, I'd never experienced a shoe that comfortable. I have a neuroma on my right foot, and the Olympus was the only pair of shoes I've found that made the neuroma almost disappear when walking. Something about the combination of zero-drop, thick bottom, and foot-shape toe box that made these work for me. I wore them everywhere (although my wife called the orange pair my "clown shoes", because face it, the 1.5 was a bulky shoe!). Unfortunately, after the 1.5, I never was really that happy with the next few models that came out. Olympus 2 was too tight and unwearable for me. Olympus 3 was better but still too binding and I felt my neuroma a little bit. Plus the top of the Olympus 3's shredded around the top of the heel. Then came the Olympus 4. For me, they worked perfectly. I bought 4 of the colors, everything but red (I'm a blue state guy and am not going to wear red shoes, even though Elvis Costello sang about them). Altra also came out with Cayd, which to my surprise also worked for me perfectly so I ordered multiple copies in all 4 colors. With the Olympus 4 and Cayd, virtually no neuroma problem. I was all set. OLYMPUS 5 Until... Olympus 5. The reviews on the 5 are not good. First and foremost, many people have uploaded pictures of the bottom treads literally falling off of the shoe. So I wasn't expecting they would work. But I figured, your mileage may vary, so maybe they will work for me? Unfortunately, they did not. Here are the problems: #1 Toe Box Fit. They are just enough narrower in the toe box vs. the Olympus 4 to put enough pressure on my foot to activate my neuroma. What does help in that case is to loosen the laces. Doing so makes them more comfortable, not as good as the 4's but maybe ok. So, no problem, right? Well no, because... #2 Short Laces. Other reviewers have noted this, but the laces are too short. WTF?! If you use the top holes and/or you loosen the laces, you can't tie the shoes. This is an inexcusable fail that saves Altra a fraction of a penny but is going to cost them in returns. # 3 Bulky Ankle Padding. The padding around the ankles is thicker than the previous version. Some might like this. I don't, it bugs me. One thing that other reviewers noted that didn't bother me was the tongue. Some say it is too sharp and plastic. I don't see a big difference between the tongue on the Olympus 4 vs 5, so it didn't bother me. ACTION PLAN * I'm returning the Olympus 5's and I'll sit out this model number until Olympus 6 are out. * I've stockpiled a few extra pairs of Olympus 4's, which are still available. Maybe I should even buy a couple more. This reminded me to check my stockpile of Cayd's, because I'm worried that Altra is going to eventually discontinue the Cayd - already Altra seems to only be carrying a couple of Cayd colors. * I am giving the Lone Peak 6's a try. I have nothing to lose with Zappos' fabulous 365 day return policy. The Lone Peak's are lighter weight than the Olympus, and they don't do quite as good as good a job with neuroma control, but they fit great and I'm hoping they work out. Lone Peak's are also equipped with adequately sized laces. (VERY ANNOYING HERE - only Olympus and Lone Peak use the 'original foot shape' - all other Altra models are narrower in the toe box and so none of them work for me - I've tried them all. Maybe Cayd has this shape too, not sure?). * Explore other brands. Here I'm not very optimistic. Over the years, I've tried many brands of shoes and only Altra works for me, given my foot problems. Redditors recommend trying Topo if you like Altra. I ordered a pair of Topo's zero drop. They looked cool, but the toe box and thinner bottom didn't work for my neuroma control. That's it, folks!

Wanted to love this shoe. Very comfortable, right out of the box. Unfortunately, after wearing on just 1 run, the tread on both outsoles is coming off. And the right insole bunches to the front of the shoe. No choice but to return. Should have listened to all the other reviewers.

I ignored the other reviews about the threads delaminating and went ahead and placed an order for these. After just a few day hikes, no pack load, on smooth trails, the threads started peeling. Unfortunately, I am leaving for the PCT next week and no way can trust these.

Extremely disappointed with the pair I got. The tread began falling off after about 50 miles of light use. My last pair of 4s I got about 700 miles and the tread never fell off. After filling a complaint with Altra I will get a refund. Hopefully the next pair will be better. If so I'll update then. But if not, just so disappointed by them.

I've been wearing Altra brand for about 10 years. The shoes keep getting more narrow. There is no more "foot shape" spacing. There now just normal shoes. Past 3.5 for all versions you get great cushioning, and a run of the mill fit. Now I see why they created a Wide for Torin (pre 4.0 version there was no need). Just received the Olympus 5 (took a chance, based on the raving reviews and no mention of the changing of what I thought the brand represented). The problem is the toe box. I compared it against an old pair of 3.5s I have at my office, and the difference is rounding on both edges of the toe box (no such rounding on the 3.5) takes away about a 1/4 to 1/3 inch away on both sides. Which means its a typical sneaker. This past Tuesday, I was in the airport, and I noticed something that I didn't quite understand until now. The only person with a new pair of Altra's on (in a busy intl airport) was me. Now, there were other brands of hardcore enthusiasts' running shoes well represented with both new and old styles. However, every Altra wearer (no matter the style - mostly Timp, Torin, Peak, and Olympus) had on a version of the shoe that were six years or older. I suspect all the 4 & 5 star reviews got into the brand in the last 2 - 3 years. Smh. Just for the record these were my 4th purchase of Altra shoes in the past 18 months (there will not be a 5th)

Just received my Olympus 5's, put them on, and they're just regular sneakers (like Nike or Adidas). The last Olympus's I had were 3.6, I also have the Torin (forced to go plush) I guess Altra just makes regular shoes now (for double the price of other regular shoes (in the case of the Olympus) whoever's rating these 4's & 5's , must've started wearing the brand a few years back. The newer versions are nothing like like the versions 5 - 10 years ago. Your toes are close together like any other shoe that isn't an "E" or "EE". Very disappointed! Picture of 3.5 vs 5 . You can see the shoe in general is narrower

I wore these hiking San Luis Peak (Colorado 14er, 15 mile hike) and after the one hike they have holes worn above the eyelets on both shoes- it looks like I have worn them for 6 months. I contacted customer service and they told me since I am still in the 30 day trial window, I can return them for a full refund which I am grateful for. That said, I am extremely disappointed that I cannot trust this shoe to keep up with me. I wish the customer service rep had a tiny bit more concern about what happened because I know I'm not the only one this is going to happen to. Unless they are asking for the shoe returned in order to do research to make this model more robust, this is just more trash in the ocean. I would be surprised if the company contacts me back, but I would welcome the opportunity. I want to wear Altras again as I've had olympus 4's, lone peaks, timps, paradgims, but the quality on the last couple pairs has not been great. Sadly this might be my last pair.

I tried on the Olympus 4 and no matter how tight I tied them, I could not stop my heel from slipping in the shoe. I was excited that the 5 had a redesigned heel area with more padding, so I was hoping that would of fixed the issue. However after wearing these around the house for over 2 hours, I could not get my heel secured in this shoe. I even tied them as tight as possible, but my heels still slightly slipped. Overall the heel is way more secure than the 4, but still not secure enough. Everything else about the shoe is awesome, the footshape is wide enough to wear correct toes, they look great and the cushion is awesome. I'm just curious on the beta testing process , couldn't you have someone try these on and within 30 minutes they would tell you that the heel lockdown isnt quite right. Seems like an easy thing to trouble shoot. Overall I'm disappointed and am looking forward to the original foot shape runner that should come out in October.
