I'm a personal trainer. These are my go-to's for everyday casual wear and my clientele's training sessions. Coming from heel-drops and narrow toe-boxes, the shoes feel great and I can't stand all the shoes I wore before these. They allow my feet to be feet and I'm comfortable all day long. Great starter shoe for anyone looking to transition into zero-drop and a wider toe-box. The only negative is their durability. I don't even runand I'm on my second pair. My big toe wore a hole into the top of the toe-box on the first pair and it's starting to happen again the second time around. Unfortunate because the shoes have so much more life than the 4-6 months I get out of them. Top of the shoe needs improvement - where the breathable mesh meets the more durable mesh.

I only wear Altra sneakers that have Original Fit. Lone Peak and Olympus have them. All others do not. I only hope that the Escalante 4 would give buyers the option for Original Fit or Standard Fit. My pinkie toe felt squeezed with Standard Fit Escalante 3.

Thinner, less cushion sole compared to the Paradigm 6. Running around town, light errands, etc...perfect shoe. At the amusement park...ALLLLL day? I would prefer the Paradigm 6 (love em..),

I bought a pair and loved the color blue with white laces sprinkled with red. After wearing them for about a week at home, I decided to return it. The only problem is that it is a standard fitting, I prefer the original fitting so that my pinkie toes don't feel squeezed inside. The reason why I prefer Lone Peak 6 the best of all is because of its original fit width toe box as I have 3 pairs. If Escalante 3.5 or 4 include the option of original fit, I guarantee I will order two or three pairs of Escalante; different colors I'd alternate on different days depending on my mood. But it was designed standard fit, disappointed me. Hmm improvement, please.

I bought this after owning the 2.5 version and have put about 150 miles on it now. Comparing the fit, the 3's sole has the same width but the upper is tighter, which makes it feel less roomy overall. I find the 2.5 to be more comfortable. Comparing performance, I find myself running more efficiently in the 3. Turning seems to be more precise, with less side to side movement compared to the 2.5. The 3 also has better traction, although mini pebbles can get stuck in the rubber outsole which can sound annoying when walking. After buying a new pair of the 2.5, to my surprise I actually found that I prefer the 3 despite being tighter / less comfortable. Overall, the 3 is a great shoe that I'd recommend. I do hope that the eventual version 4 finds a happy medium on the upper between offering more room like the 2.5 but still having that added security like the 3.

I have 9.5 in Solstice and Superior and they fit well. This style was much to small for my instep.

This is my first pair of Altra shoes since the original Altra Instinct which I've had two pairs of and still wear casually. I really loved these new Escalante 3s when I first put them on. My first run in them was four miles and they felt incredible. I typically run in Newton road or Soloman trail shoes. These are quite a bit different and I could instantly feel additional cushioning, but not too much. They definitely helped me to run more on my mid-foot. Toe area felt great with just enough room but not too much to feel sloppy. I have worn them all-day casually a few times and have noticed some discomfort and pain on the outside of my foot just ahead of my heel. It seems like these are just a bit too narrow for my foot. Overall, shoes are 5-stars, except I have to deduct one for the discomfort. I will definitely try a couple other pairs of Altras and maybe find one with a bit more room towards the back of the shoe.

I really enjoyed the fit and conform of this shoe, it took a few runs to break in well but overall I'm pleased with these. I usually wear brooks and for longer distance I would still use those. However, the shorter distance runs (3-5 miles) I'll definitely be using these Altra's

The Escalante is a stylish and comfortable running shoe by Denver based Altra. The toe box feels slightly wider than a traditional shoe but not so big that the foot moves around. The insole feels like memory foam that conforms to the foot. The sole of the shoe feels much stiffer than other shoes. I'm hopeful that the sole will loosen up a bit with more use.

I have worn these shoes for the past 2 weeks. In that time i would say that these shoes are decent but probably not the best choice for me. I have wide flat feet. It has been a problem because it causes shin splints and back pain. Due to this i have to pay more for shoes than the average person because i need quality and support. With these shoes, i appreciated the wide form of the shoes right our of the gate, however the lack of arch support really dissapointed me. After a week of wearing these i noticed that my feet and legs were more sore than normal. The quality of the shoes is very nice. Everything seems well constructed. The look of the shoes is basic but nice. Not basic enough to look like an "old persons shoe". I think that these shoes would be nice for a specific type of person, however i would not recommend them to anyone with foot pain.

My first impressions of this shoe were that they are high quality and comfortable out of the box. The uppers are a nicely stitched breathable mesh that seems a bit more durable than the uppers on my Torrin 4s. The lacing gently keeps my foot from moving in the shoe, however the laces themselves are too short to easily use the loop lacing technique. There is quite a bit more arch support in these than the Torrin 4s and I actually quite appreciate that. All in all, running in these is a much cushier ride, ideal for longer distances. My main concern is the toe box. Where all my previous Altras have featured a very wide toe box - like they are known for - these seem to have narrowed it a bit and now look more like the competition. I wish they would return to their superior albeit rather funky design, as that's what made me fall in love with the brand in the first place.

Most comfortable shoes I have ever worn but I think I got a defective pair. Both of my shoes squeak with every step. It is very annoying.

Version 3 is Huge improvement over Escalante 2.5 with respect to upper and lockdown, it’s much more snug in the heel and mid foot and still has a wide toebox. I don’t have a wide feet but enjoy wide toebox and v3 delivers, while v2.5 was an overall wider shoe due to the stretchy upper. Although the Ego midsole is supposedly the same, my v2.5 after 250 miles seems more bouncy with rubbery rebound and ground feel (hard to describe) where as the brand new v3 has a more traditional soft cushioned feel with lesser ground feel. It might just be a matter of breaking in or the new outsole is muting some of the bounce I can’t say. Over all 100% recommend if you are an altra fan with a regular sized foot and need wide toebox. They are stylish enough that you can retire them to live style shoes after few hundred miles of running.

Ran a 5k out of the box. They run narrower than the 2.5 but still a great walking/running/training crossover shoe. The 2.5 will still be my true runner., buy another pair of 2.5s before they are gone.

I have purchased the Escalante for years, size 9.5, a half size up from my dress shoe size. With the Escalante 3, however, the shoe is shorter. Consequently, I have no longer have a thumb's width of space between my big toe and the front of the shoe; it's really close. Instead of purchasing a half size up from my dress shoe size, as I had done with prior versions of the Escalante, I should have purchased a full size up. I'll need to return these.

I use these shoes pretty much to walk around in daily. I have not tried to run in them at all yet but feel they would do fairly well if I did. The color and style is really cool and I would recommend these shoes to others.

I like the shoe but recognize it's larger than the others. Yes it's more cushiony and feels heavier as well. Also the material is definitely not as form fitting as previous models. With all that being said I like the shoe. The cushion is welcome to me as I felt like previous editions were a bit too minimal. I feel like the mid and upper are good. My only wish is the shoe was more form fitting like previous editions but overall I like the shoe and recommend it.

Im not sure why all the negative reviews on these shoes, just bout my second pair in a diff color. The shoes are tremendously comfortable and stylish even. I was a bit hesitant at first because the toe box looked wide but after wearing them I really like them. I would definitely recommend them to others in the future.

I bought these just as a walking shoe, but the temptation to run got me. I actually enjoyed them for the most part. However, I feel like the cushioning is a little over the top though. I had to concentrate more on how I was landing rather than letting my mind body connection take over. This being my first adventure into a zero drop, I say overall not a bad segue into that world. I will keep them as a walker and check out the racer for a runner though.

Feels like an Escalante, just a bit more stable. It's a little stiffer due to the change in outsole rubber design and the slightly wider midsole in the heel and midfoot. My size 13 insole is the EXACT SAME SIZE AND SHAPE as the Escalante 2.5 in a size 12.5. So for those complaining, size up a half size.

These shoes have equal measure of pros and cons. Pro is in the support/comfort: decent arch support and overall width comfort seems fine (probably NOT a good fit for people with very wide feet). Like my Olympus 4s, the comfort is high with next to no drop. Altras also have a sturdy sole so that there's less bendy floppiness. They're solid. That can be a con for some who want shoes that conform to the feet flexing when walking. I'd rather the shoe keep my foot from flexing a lot. Others complained about the sturdy heel and lack of breathability. I found this to be true. The heel is high and tight even on my narrow heel and ankles. and they felt warmer than most shoes too without ventilation and firm padding around the opening. This can be a pro for trail runners or hikers who want to reduce the chance of turning an ankle on roots and rocks. Also, they might break in and become looser and less warmly constricting with use. Worst part for me was the oddly low toe area. The toe box width is somewhat roomy, but the height is tight so these shoes felt constricting on my toes. I don't have plump feet or toes and these were bearing down even with a half size larger than I usually buy in other shoes. I then tried a full size up and the toe box height felt a bit roomier. However, that weird toe wrinkle or divot appeared that others took pictures of. I could feel it too and it was not acceptable. That divot would pop in and out while walking or standing and it was annoying. Seems like they made a shoe with no structure around the toes above the rubber sole and the fabric can bend in and stay like that or pop out. Maybe that's why they were on sale. I can't help but wonder if these sneaker companies compel their designers to pump out new styles so rapidly they don't even test them.

Unlike many others' reviews, I didn't mind the alterations to the construction of the shoe as much as I have not liked the sole/foam. Every time I run in these (just hit 300 miles in the shoe, I'm < 150 pounds) I notice I'm working much harder than when I'm running in the Torin 7's or the Escalante Racers and my legs feel fatigued. This is only exacerbated when they get wet running in the rain. If the response to this is 'well, 300 miles - you're nearing the end of the shoe's life,' then my review changes to this being a total durability issue. A shoe at this price with my weight should last through 400+.
