I'm comparing these to several Hoka Speedgoat 5's that I've walked multiple Caminos with in Spain - usually more than 500 miles over a month of walking every day. I'm considering trying a different shoe on my next walk, and thought I'd try these out as they were on sale, and I'm having a hard time finding the Speedgoat 5 in my area, in a color that isn't over the top garish.
The first thing I've noticed is that they are considerably wider than the Speedgoat - so much so that I'd probably purchase my usual shoe size if I were to use them on a Camino (I always order up a half size when buying a trainer for my walks). Second thing I've noticed is that they don't have the spring a Speedgoat does, which I wasn't surprised about - but I did expect them to have just a bit more cushioning in them than they do. I'll probably end up buying whatever color I can find in the Speedgoat 5's and just live with it - I don't like the Speedgoat 6 at all, so I'm going to have to just buy up all the Speedgoat 5's I can find to prepare for future walks! Please note, I don't run in these - it's strictly walking on various surfaces over long distances - runners will probably have an entirely different take on the shoe than I would!

The shoes caused pain in my right ankle, I decided to return them because I didn't want them to cause an injury. I have always used the speedgoat model and will continue to use it.

I only wear HOKA and I've been wearing HOKA for over 5 years. This is an expensive trail shoe. I had the purple pair before the coral/pink pair both size 7.5. The purple pair ran shorter in length and shoe laces. The coral/pink pair run almost a half size bigger. Shoe laces are longer. When running downhill, you will fill your foot slip forward do to the extra length. I love the coral/pink color and currently thinking about returning them due to the length and seeing if a size down would help. I constantly worry if I am going to slip in them.

I love everything about this shoe except that the toe box is so wide that my feet rub and they cause blisters on the side of my big toe. Other than that, they are excellent for super technical trails where the only thing keeping you on very steep or canted rock is the grip on the soles. They are nimble and fun to run in. I can do a half in these without the toe box becoming an issue, but for longer distances I need a different shoe. I hope future iterations have a smaller toe box, because they are otherwise perfect.

The fit was perfect. Vibrant color. Only thing- annoying loud squeak with every step. I work in a hospital and cannot wear loud shoes so I returned them.

I've been a Hoka evangelist since my first pair of Challengers. Recently I ordered the Mafate. I read a review that they were great hill climbing sneaks. They are! They have rebound and just enough cushion to knock out hard, hilly, rocky rooty miles. I even give the MTB guys a run for their money on the singletrack.
The reason for 3 stars is that they break down way too fast. The right sole split before a month was out and was ruined. I run a lot, but none of my other Hokas have had this short of a trail life before they turned into garden kicks.
For the hefty price, it's hard to justify replacing them monthly. I guess these would last longer if they were taken on gentle walks, but I expect my trail shoes to work as hard as I do!

I wanted more cushioning and arch support than these offered. They did feel stabilizing. The material felt like it contained plastic and wouldn’t breathe. The cost is much to high for the quality and comfort. Hokas are also just plain ugy.

I tried these on in a store and after a lot of thought decided to make the plunge. I'm glad Hoka has a try for 30 days policy because after wearing these around my house for a couple of hours I had 2-3 of my little toes on my right foot starting to go numb. I do have something going on there, like a jam or a bruise or something (accidentally kicked a table), but I don't have that numbness with any other shoes that I already have. I really wanted to love some HOKAs but I haven't found the right one for me yet.

Very good stability and is probably good on trails. But they are too long and also too narrow. These would be great shoes if offered in a wide version, but wide options are not on this shoe.

After two months of use, the sole is discolored. This kind of expensive brand and such low quality? I through this disappointment away.

These got such great reviews, obviously people love them. For me, these rubbed hot spots on the back of both heels during the uphill. On the downhill, the top laces cut into the top of my foot. The next day after my first use, the sole of my right foot was bruised. Not comfortable at all for me. Returned.

This was my third pair of Mafate Speed 4. The quality of this shoe is going downhill, I'd say the quality of Hoka overall is going downhill. There seems to be a consistent issue with the upper peeling off after only a few runs. I submitted a warranty claim, had to pay for the packaging and then just got it denied with no communication at all, they just send the shoes back. I will not be purchasing any Hoka shoes ever again, especially knowing they don't even honor their own warranty. I'll be sure to tell others the same

I chose this Malfate beecause I liked the colors, pattern and it said good for walking and hiking. I hike with my dogs nearly every day on both blacktop and wooded trails. Sadly by the 3rd week they started to hurt the balls of my feet; and not just during the longs dog walks but for hours afterward. Like real aches that wouldn't quit.
So I got a good 3 weeks out of them and now can no longer wear them. They wore out so fas I was stunned. Clearly my old feet need a more cushy Hoka like the Bondi or the Skyflow that I just got and absolutely LOVE

I absolutely love the feel of the shoe unfortunately it caused plantar fasciitis on my right foot. I had to go back to my Brooks running shoes.

Was disappointed to receive my new Mafates to see the fabric cuts looked rough and unfinished. Really hope it isn't a sign of declining quality.

I wish you wouldn't change all the size features of the shoes when the new model comes out.. this is why I return shoes.,unfortunately.
1. I have achilles issues
2. The shoes are wider everywhere and I wear a B regular width.
It's frustrating. Still a Hoka fan and maybe u can make sneakers for narrow feet.

I have tried to find a good fit on 4 different trail running shoes, including the Mafate Speed. Regardless of different sizes, width, or gender of the model , the toe box on all recent Hokas has been small and weirdly shaped with the exception of the older Arahi,
I have owned 6 different Hokas in the past, all of which fit well annd were my "go to" shoes. Until and unless Hoka starts making shoes again that fit the variety of human feet, I will be looking elsewhere.

The shoe is very attractive. Unfortunately, they were uncomfortable to wear. If you have worn Bondi 8 Hokas and then try these, you will be greatly disappointed. I was expecting to feel like I was walking on air, but instead there was no soft cushioning to help propel me. In an attempt to expand their product lines and appeal to more people, Hoka has definitely missed the mark with this shoe.

Size was good. Colors were awesome.
However, when I tried the shoe on for a test walk in my Tardis, oops, I mean home, I sounded like a Cyberman. The squeaking noise was very loud. I do not recommend the shoe for this reason. Unwearable.

I read some good reviews about this shoe and I really wanted it to work for me, but I was quite disappointed. The size 9 regular, which I have used over and over again in other Hoka models felt too roomy overall and particularly in the toe box. I used them for a run / walk in rolling terrain and I didn't feel secure or stable enough. I nearly twisted my ankle a few times. Downhills were particularly bad, with foot sliding back to front and side to side too much, even with using the laces up to the top hole and tightening them up. I don't think sizing down would work. I normally use the Arahis but I needed a trail shoe with better grip, which is why I tried the Mafates, but they just didn't feel secure or stable enough for me.
