Altra has completely lost it. Their width in the toes is roughly the same as traditional running shoes now. That is: ridiculously NARROW. Absolutely no reason to buy Altras anymore. Beyond disappointed. Altra, you're losing/have lost your customers.

They ruin the appearance, the fit, and comfort of the Timp and increase the price. Why does Altra continue to do this to their best styles? Did they get purchased by another company?

I loved the Timp 1.5 and this is the best Timp since then however it's quite a bit different. I think the Timp 4 takes over as my favorite Timp and Altra shoe. Great Fit, super comfy and breathable, Good toe reinforcement, Very comfy and functional tongue with nice laces. This is where it gets a little different... the heal cup feels like it is something similar to neoprene. It's super comfy, required no break in period for me, and has a really nice finger loop to pull the shoe on. The traction is good but I wish the tread was a little more aggressive. I manly wear these shoes for hiking and the trail traction is pretty good . Bottom line I highly recommend this shoe.

The new TIMP 4 hits all the marks! I can't express how well this shoe preforms in all conditions and on a variety of terrain. I've tested this shoe on gravel, hard packed dirt, mud, rocks and roots, lofty soft pine needles, ice, snow, river beds (in water and out), flats and mountain granite. Whatever I throw at the new TIMP 4 it graciously accepts the challenge. Grip and traction is incredible. It's light and nibble but hardy when you need it to be. If you get your feet wet these drain and dry on the run within minutes. This is my grab on the go, I can run anything shoe!

I use this shoe for my general easy terrain trail running. The tread in so worn down at 175 miles. They now have almost zero traction making them slip with anything but perfect trail conditions. Disappointed in the quality lately. Dang, this brand used to be great!

The width on this shoe is exactly what they said it would be. It's not a wide as the lone peak and they were spot on. Love the extra comfort in this shoe. Love the new look. They fit like the superior.

I don't understand all these negative comments, from people that run 40 miles a week and wear out their shoes super quickI do 3 runs a week, 5 miles each, and trail run in rocky Arizona mountains. These are by far the most comfortable and forgiving trail shoes and the width is changed a lot of foot pains I was having with other shoes. So I'm not an elite athlete, just a dude, likes to run and these have completely changed my comfort level running.

First of all this update was such a great toe to heel overhaul it crushed my expectation!! The last Timp after one wear I blew the overlays off the mesh. For my foot the previous model was a very FITTED shoe. I had to wear thin or ultra thin socks to be some what comfortable for short to 2 hour runs. The foam is a little thicker this go around which is nice and the upper is very comfortable. Toe box has more room which is a great improvement from the previous. Lug pattern is aggressive enough for dirt and some snow activity. Gets a little dicey with 6" snow or higher with traction. Definitely digging the new drain hole system that navigates through the sole and out the port holes! nice feature. My only nag is the tongue slides down towards the toes given the soft material under the laces. It does not rub or bother. I love the new addition to the heel cup and pull loop!! Soft, comfy and practical. I typical size to a M's 12 and this model feels true to size. I size up 1 full size from my measurement on a brannock device which gives me a thumb nails space from my longest toe!! This has allowed for less black toe nails and a very comfortable run!

I've only tested out the timps for a couple mid Distance Trail runs but so far, I'm really enjoying the feel! It's far more responsive than my previous version of Timps and i love how it fits my foot. I'm looking forward to doing some longer distance mines in these in the near future. Thanks, Altra!!

Aaaahhhhh. Finally. The only issue with this shoe is slight heel slippage. Otherwise I love it. Sized right. Great cushion. Great grip. I would note that the midsole is so soft that substantial trail objects can be felt through it. Not an issue unless you’re hammering hard on edgy rocks.
Great toe width without looking stupid. They beg me to go further.

I'm on my third pair. For trail running and hiking I absolutely love this shoe. It sheds water great and honestly, fits my foot better than any shoe I've ever worn. I have own other Altras and this is my favorite.
But, it has a serious weakness in that the sole material seems to be made out of the softest, least durable material I've ever experienced! Within just 4 months of using the shoe daily, the tread is almost completely gone and the shoe becomes super slippery. I like to wear the shoe all day, but I'm only hiking with it for about an hour a day.
Also, the mesh material that covers the drainage holes almost always peels away and anywhere on the upper where the mesh flexes tends to wear through as well.
Perhaps this short lifetime is the cost of creating such a lightweight shoe? But, given the price we pay for Altras, I was hoping for better (tougher) materials.

This is the third pair of TIMP I have bought, (had the two previous version). The TIMP 4 are by far not up to the quality of standard that a expected from Altra and the previous version. Less than 100 miles and already have seams busting and tears. I expect and understand normal wear and tear but this is by far the worst. I am loyal to brands and especially quality running shoes. I have recommended ultra shoes and the previous TIMP versions to friends, but I cannot recommend the TIMP 4. Not mad. Just disappointed, I expected more from these shoes. Hopefully the next versions are better than these.

The shoe looks great, but I had to return them. The tongues were designed in a way that it had a sharp edge and wearing no show socks it was rubbing against my leg and really uncomfortable. It was tailored to be thin around the rim of the tongue and that just created too sharp of an edge. Probably wouldn’t be noticeable wearing socks that go higher, but I did not like the feel at all in low cut socks.

Fool me once, shame on you...
This is the second pair of Altra's that have fallen apart on me, and this one was catastrophic. After less than 150 miles total, in the middle of a thru-hike, my shoes disintegrated on the sides. I literally had to stop my hike and find a way to get new shoes while I was on the trail. DO NOT TRUST THESE SHOES.
Of course Altra claimed it wss "wear and tear" and would not replace under warranty. Classic. Of course there is wear and tear when you're out on the trail, but these are "trail runners" and should really be up to the task. So not only has the company's quality gone downhill, so has their customer service. Incredibly disappointing.
I was a pretty devoted Altra fan, but I just can't support this company anymore.
That said, the shoes were quite comfortable, and if you are just walking on gravel roads, they'll probably hold up for you.

Trail walking mainly. Like cushioning which is just right, not too thick or squishy. Wide toe box exceeds what I need for right foot which has bunion so normal left foot is swimming in left toe box.
The main problem with Timp 4 is the seriously strange tongue which has two extensions on each side of tongue which have to be smoothed out so to avoid ridges to rub against sides of toes, and in addition, the tongue needs to be pulled forward so it doesn't bunch up in front toe box. Too complicated and too much material in the tongue and too large toe box make shoe feel strange bunchy,

I gave this shoe a 4-star review earlier--too soon. The shoes fit well, are comfortable, and drain well when you get them wet, but they suffer from a classic Altra problem--lack of durability. I have had Altras give out on me after 300 miles or so, but this pair is by far the worst--the mesh that's glued to the side of the rubber outsole started peeling almost immediately, and the left shoe developed a hole where the fabric meets the sole just 2.5 months (and less than 200 miles!) after I started using them. To add insult to injury, when I sent in a warranty claim, I was told that this was "ordinary wear and tear"! To their credit, when I followed up and reiterated that I'd been an Altra customer since 2015 and had never had a pair of shoes give out this fast, Altra did honor their warranty. So I will remain an Altra customer, but I cannot recommend anyone purchase this iteration of the Timp until they address the durability issues I (and apparently a number of other purchasers) have raised.

What a disservice to runners. I almost returned these shoes after checking the reviews before my first run, but figured I would give them a try. Uppers blowing out at 50 miles of easy trail use...

I wore all TIMP versions since 1.5 and this is the best one I had in terms of comfort, cushioning and rebound. Toe Box in more tight than the LP.

I walk a lot for exercise. My extensor hallicis longus tendon always gets sore in other running shoes. But never if I wear the TIMP 4. So, that's all I walk in now.
