I purchased this jacket for my VERY picky boyfriend. After reading the reviews I thought it would be the perfect jacket for hiking in the Northern California rains. He was very close to keeping it, which says a lot since as I mentioned he is very picky. After some back and forth he decided that he would like pit zips for ventilation just in case he wanted to wear the jacket while riding his bike. So sorry to say, the jacket was returned. During my inspection, I thought it was a great light-weight jacket especially for the sale price. I would have liked to have seen a bit of a sturdier zipper or even snaps on the overlapping zipper vent to allow for more comfort flexibility and ventilation. Overall I would give this product without ever having been worn a 4 star. Love North Face products.

I really like this jacket. I wore this on a trip to England in February and it kept me bone dry in the wind and rain. Temps in the low 40's tested it's warmth but you can get by OK with some layering underneath. Can't see myself wearing this as my go-to New York City winter jacket, but on milder days it is perfectly reliable. Fall and Spring are right in the wheelhouse for this climate-killer.

waterproofing is not as good as gtx jackets. used wash-in dwr and found some stains on the jacket. no idea about if they came the the jacket or it's washer's issue.

Nice rain jacket, but I wish it was more lightweight for throwing in your summer travel bag in case of rain. This is more a Spring/late autumn jacket that you would throw overall a flannel shirt. Still... It's looks and fits great. Cheap plastic zipper is annoying for such a pricey jacket. You really have to jiggle it around to get it to engage and disengage.

I have used it on Himalayan trekking trips. It can with stand upto 1 hour of heavy monsoon rain but beyond that it wont work well. Gets a shaggy wet feeling but insides remain dry though.

Purchased this jacket for light to moderate hiking trips as well as working outdoors some days. Only complaint is that if you have your hands in the outside pockets, a small amount of water will get in the pocket

Fantastic color, quality, weight, and waterproofing. I chose this over competitors products because of the Velcro cuffs and hood shape, my only complain is the lack of vents. Armpit or sleeve vents would go a long way towards staying cool with a heavy ruck or backpack.

The jacket packs down well and is breathable. Great color. I thought there were going to be under arm zips for increased ventilation, but I guess I imagined this in the product description.

Great quality jacket. However, I didn't realize it only comes in slim fit so it's pretty snug around the midsection especially when wearing under layers

I'm 157lbs, 6'1" with long arms, and the arms/body of the Large were perfect for me. The hood, however, is not tall enough for me, limiting mobility and putting strain on my head/neck, especially if I look downward at all. The drawcord in the back of the hood is nice for adjusting peripheral vision, but the cordlock is attached in a way that makes it extremely difficult to adjust. The drawcords for the hood opening are INSIDE the jacket, so when the weather gets nasty and you want to cinch them up for more protection, you have to UNZIP the jacket, exposing yourself to rain/wind just to tighten the hood opening. I like the rest of the jacket but will probably return it because of the hood issues.

I'm sure this jacket is great. I won't ever know. I had some qualms about buying it because it doesn't have pit zips and I tend to run hot, but it got great reviews on breathability so I figured why not. I ordered a medium, because I'm not a tall person, it came, and I zipped it up and I looked like I was wearing a child's jacket. Even after losing the 30lbs I could stand to lose, this would still be way too tight as a medium on me - who wants a body-hugging raincoat? Not me! So back to North Face it went. I bought a Patagonia instead. It has pit zips.

I bought this jacket because I thought that this same quality as gortex. However, after being exposed to rain to about ten minutes, water starts seeping through by my elbows and neck.

Had this jacket for less than a year and wore it during a rainstorm today and it is not waterproof. I was drench. the rain soak through the jacket and I was soaked through to my clothing. If you want this because it is waterproof. I would no recommend it.

I really wanted to live this jacket. The quality is second to none, but for the price I think there could be a few improvements. The fit is super boxy & the hood could use a laminated bill. The overall feel of the jacket is much better than me Patagonia or Arc'teryx, but the other two jackets have a better fit and a better hood.

Of course a great quality product. Unfortunately the jacket would only work well with nothing but a t-shirt or long sleeve on underneath. And if I bumped it up a size to fit my chest (42inch) the length and sleeves were too long. The fabric is non stretch unfortunately. And being I wanted to use it while hiking and fishing I didn't want it so tight limiting my mobility. I am 5'8 and 178lbs for those curious.

I expected more. It's good for raining days. But not for wind or cold days. It's a good rain jacket.

Performs ok in light rain. Took it on a hike when we encountered heavy rainfall, even with the kiwi waterproofing water still soaked through the arms and back. Would not recommend for anyone serious.

Seemed good at first but then one heavy downfall revealed how poor this jacket performs in heavy rain. Soaked through in multiple areas, mainly on sleeves. Took ages to dry. Poor quality for a more expensive waterproof. Will be seeking a refund.

I have used it for occasional wear walking to and from classes at school. The outer layer soaks up water which I don't like considering it's supposed to be a rain jacket. The inner layer is the waterproof part and feels kind of weird on the skin, it's almost as if the two layers were accidentally flipped. Anyway, I've had the jacket only a year now, I take good care of it, I haven't put it through strenuous conditions, and the inside is already breaking down. The waterproofing has micro tears in areas where the jacket sits (shoulders, armpits, mid back). The material itself feels cheap honestly and it's proving to be with how quickly this jacket is degrading. Side note, I'm in the military and if I were to put this jacket through a fraction of the training we do I doubt it would last a week. Which is sad because The North Face is supposed to provide attire for some of the most austere environments.

Review for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
Never heard of a Xtra-large size that is also a “slim” fit. Apparently with The North Face, it does. Didn’t fit on my 220 lb frame and being returned to Zappos.

It quickly wears out and frays in the areas that touch the neck, back, and drawstrings on the hood. The water resistance also quickly degrades after a few showers. Its durability is no longer maintained after 3-6 months of use even with low frequency use.
