If this shirt is as good as the one I've had since the eighties, it's a great shirt. But after 30 years it's time for a new one. I can't order the 14 1/2 as before so the size chart says Medium is for chest size 38-40. Perfect. But the Traditional Medium I received, by my ruler, is 46" in the chest and extends half way to my knees (I'm 5' 8"). As one other reviewer so eloquently said, and I wish I'd read earlier, clown like too big. So much too big that I don't trust the Small would fit either and I don't relish paying return shipping twice to find out. I guess this shirt is no longer for average sized people.

I have been buying and wearing this same shirt for over 40 years; so it never occurred to me to read the reviews prior to placing an order for another one. Receiving a new shirt in medium, I immediately found that it was "way over-sized" it fit like I had an X-Large on? Upon calling customer service I was informed that LL Bean has in fact changed the sizing; so I asked why in the world would you "fix" something that was not broken! CS rep told me the targeted market was "college students" who in fact want an over -sized shirt to wear as a jacket.. well I for one say let the college students shop at Abercrombie & American Eagle. I was not the first to complain about sizing - due to this LL Bean will be going back to the "original sizing" but the "new" stock won't be available until the first of the year?? So as a business decision :Why not release it now -in original sizing, and also list a shirt as being "over-sized" for those wanting to wear a tent! Makes perfect sense to me.

I'm 6'4 190 lbs. and I ordered a Large Tall. Big mistake! This thing is massive. It's clown-like huge. It's a cool shirt otherwise but I've never seen such a discrepancy in sizing. Going to try the Medium which I've never been able to fit into...but maybe with this shirt it'll be perfect.

I've been buying these shirts for 5 years now and this is the first time I've had such a bad experience. In the past I've always ordered size M-Tall which always fit perfectly. This time around I purchased 2 of these shirts in the exact same size (M-Tall) yet when they arrived one was 4 inches longer at the bottom and 2.5 inches longer in the sleeves compared to the other. On top of that the smaller shirt was already bigger than any of the shirts I had received in the past. I checked the sizing chart that l.l.bean provides and the larger shirt's dimensions lined up with an X-Large Tall. I ended up returning that shirt and having the other custom tailored to fit me. I do love these shirts, but can't recommend how l.l.bean has recently been manufacturing / distributing them. Fix this please!!

The switch from the original sizing to traditional fit has dramatically changed the size. Before traditional fit was introduced, a regular size medium would fit perfectly, now it is extremely over-sized. If I size down to a small the chest is too tight. Very disappointing because this was one of my favorite styles of shirts. Please bring back the original sizes from 2014.

Been buying this item for over ten years. Suddenly the large, traditional fit sleeves are 4 inches longer. The new chest to sleeve size options make no sense. Unwearable. Disappointed. Have to look elsewhere :-(

The order said size medium, the label in the shirt said size medium, but when I inquired I was told it was large on purpose, an "over-shirt" or something like that. I thought washing the shirt might bring take the stiffness out and make it fit better-nope, still too big. L.L. Bean did offer to take the shirt back, even after I washed it and they would send me back a small. Personally, I am uncomfortable returning items after wear or washing. Yeah, it's silly. I will keep the shirt, and as I told the company, "I will wear it in the evenings on the beach at the bonfire this summer." By the way, it is a very nice looking shirt, it's well made, and feels sturdy-I'm just sorry I can't use it as my go-to over a colored T-shirt, at 73 years-old I don't want to look like I borrowed big brother's shirt.

I have purchased this shirt for a few years now, and never had any problems until this year. WHAT has happened to the quality of your chamois shirts L.L.Bean Company??? I ordered two, small, regular, forest green shirts. The sleeves on the first one were 2" longer than the shirts I had in the past, and the other "identical" shirt had sleeves that were 4" longer!!! The smell of the fabric from the first shirt was toxic smelling as well. Until you bring the manufacture of these shirts BACK to the United States L.L.Bean Company, you've definitely lost me as a customer. Adios.

I have purchased this shirt previously and always fit. The last 2 purchases I had to return the shirts because the sleeves were too long. The shirt material is great . a heavy flannel. I don't know why the sleeves are so long. I order the same size . Very disappointed. Maybe if it was made in the great U.S.A. The sleeves would be the correct size.

As many others have noted, LL Bean has messed up the sizing royally. I have over the years bought several Bean chamois shirts, my favorites, all in size Medium. They fit perfectly. I received a Medium for Christmas and it fits like a tent -- the sleeves extend over my knuckles and a large pillow would fit under my stomach. Will try a Small, but not optimistic. Please bring back the normal sizing.

I have been a loyal Bean customer for decades.I have been wearing the chamois shirts for over 40 years. I have worn my last chamois color shirt to rag status, my wife won't let me wear it anymore...I have had all colors over the years. So this year I received an new chamois and indigo for Christmas. Size large, as usual over the past 25 years. I am so disappointed in the huge difference there is in the sizing. The sleeves fell down to my finger tips, the shirt tail fell to mid thigh, and I could smuggle a quarter keg in the body. I have several large that are in good shape and they fit excellent. I brought the large back and exchanged for medium. They are tight through the chest and fit OK in the sleeve and tail. Please, please bring back the original sizing. I do NOT want to change brands, but replacements may need to come from, heaven forbid, a competitor....by the way, finding a nickname that is accepted is frustrating....

The new sizing that LL bean is now using varies way too much. I'm 5'9" 160 lbs and with every other clothing company I wear a size L. I can wear a medium traditional fit t-shirt but with the Chamois shirts they are way oversized its way to baggy at the waist. If I wear a small chamois shirt its too tight in the chest. Please go back to the original sizes they fit much better.

This shirt is beautifully made. The colors are great and the fabric is the best chamois we have seen. The problem was in the sizing. My husband always wears a regular large. He is 6' tall and weighs 185 lbs. This shirt was three inches too long in the sleeves. When I compared it to the same style shirt that I bought him a year ago, it was wider, longer and the sleeves came down to his finger tips. I called Customer Service and told them the buttons were farther apart on the new shirts, too. She thought it might have been mistagged and should have been a "tall." She sent me two new shirts, but they fit the same. When I called again for instructions to return them, I was told they now had a message that said they were oversized to allow for shrinking. She encouraged me to wash and dry them. I washed and machine dried one of them. It washed beautifully and did not shrink! I returned all four of them. P.S. The three henley-style shirts that I bought at the same time, fit him perfectly and washed and dried great.

I purchased 2 of these shirts (gray and navy) for my husband for Christmas (2016) I just washed them (in cold water) dried them (on delicate) and the Navy has pilling all over it so will have to wash it again it also has curled collar and bottom edge curled - the gray one, well where do I start. The collar is all messed up, wont fold right and curls the sleeves are all wrinkled, the bottom edging curled up and it looks like its 10 years old - not at all the quality I expect from LL Bean and the price of $49.95 each - I guess I should have went to Walmart instead. I had purchased 2 of these before for my husband and he loved the navy one (other than the collar curls still) so I thought I would get him a couple more. So disappointed in this shirt. My husband has not even worn them yet.

Terribly disappointed. Did some early Xmas shopping in late Oct..Early Nov. Bought 2 for gifts. When opened they were marked LARGE as ordered, BUT they were so large we thought about pitching them as a tent in the the family room! How can the sizing be so far off? Do not recommended this item until sizing is rectified. Additional input: These shirts did not have the typical Chamois soft handed feel they used to. Almost a cardboard hard feel. They are on the way back to Maine.

The fabric in this shirt is great but I wish I would have read the reviews with one star. The sizing on this shirt is way off. Ordered a Medium but was more like an extra large. Had to return both shirts. Someone in quality control needs to get a handle on this.

This is by no means the same material used for decades by LL Bean, but merely a "shadow" of it's former splendor. My 86 year old Father had chamois from the 60's as does my 68 year old friend-who also has LL Bean chamois from his Dad. I purchased my first one 24 years ago and the material still is unworn - color slightly faded. What we referred to as "heirloom quality" - you could pass them down to your sons. Enter an order for this product 2016: Chamois color. Shipment arrives - color WAY off. Chamois is more bright yellow - not tan. At a size XL - couldn't take the teasing of being the largest canary anyone had ever seen! The old material because it was so nice, thick and dense retained stiff collars that didn't curl up and go everywhere and thick cuffs that didn't pucker. This material is now about half the weight/density of the product from 24 years ago. Please don't do the customers a disservice by representing the current product as the same one designed by LL Bean decades ago. Design yes - Material, not even close. Very disappointing. I will return.

Bought the red chamois shirt in medium, my husband's go-to winter shirt. His old one is finally fraying at the collar and cuffs. The sleeves on the new one go way beyond his finger tips and the shirt hangs almost to his knees. The shoulders and body fit like an extra large. So disappointed. Returning it.

This is one of the prettiest plaids I've ever seen, and the fabric is wonderful. That said, the shirt is a mess. I ordered this for my Dad's 91st birthday, thinking it would be great for him since he gets so cold. This is the strangest fit I've seen on one of the LL Bean shirts. I ordered a medium regular, which is what he normally wears. The shirt is extremely baggy, long, with extremely long sleeves. Also, the front pockets are sewn on crooked and one is higher than the other. Really disappointed. I'm returning the shirt, and don't know what I will get to replace it.

My husband has owned several LL Bean chamois shirts over the years, and was always satisfied with the quality and durability. But after one washing and line drying, the fabric on this one fuzzed and pilled to a very noticeable degree. Very disappointing and I have already returned it.

I recently switched from woolrich to LLBean for chamois shirts. I prefer to wear then untucked. These shirts need one more bottom button. When worn untucked the shirt flaps around.

Measurements for these are a mess. Have ordered these for years and never had a problem. Now the shoulders are hanging off and the sleeves are 4 or more inches too long - almost to my husband's fingertips. It used to be so easy to order from LL Bean. These measurements are ridiculously off. My husband wears a large/tall. A medium tall would be too small in the body. Based on similar reviews it would do no good to try another large. These 3 shirts are going back today.

Have been purchasing chamois shirts for years in a large size. Ordered a new one and it draped on me like an XXL. The sleeves were 4" longer than my old ones. Sent it back and ordered a medium and it fits like the large. L.L.Bean has a sizing problem this year with these shirts but refuses to acknowledge it.

I loved the feel of this shirt; it was a little big and boxy when I first tried it on, but I figured it would soften in the wash and become flexible, soft, and comfy. Unfortunately it shrunk a huge amount in the first wash -- to the point where I could not even do the buttons up any more. I figure it shrunk at least 2", possibly 3". I had to return it without ever wearing it beyond first trying it on after my package was delivered.

Many people had liked this shirt in older reviews, but this year it seems to be very different. I had read multiple reviews explaining how the sizes were often too large this year. But it is difficult to find thick, soft, solid color shirts of this type so I decided that I would take a chance. When the two small, regular shirts I ordered arrived and I tried them on the sleeves were hanging down to my finger tips. The shirts appeared to be about 2 sizes too large so they were quickly returned. These shirts are made in El Salvador and it is quite possible that large numbers of the wrong labels were placed on an entire shipment of them. Or the factory has not followed the size specifications they were given and produced perhaps thousands of incorrectly sized shirts. I assume that companies such as LL Bean inspect samples of their various types of imported clothing when the shipments arrive in the U.S. and check for general quality. However with clothing items this is not enough. LL Bean must have at least dozens or perhaps hundreds of workers at their Maine warehouse who normally ware all different sizes of clothing. In addition to inspecting random pieces for quality it would be very easy to simply ask some of those individuals to TRY ON those samples to see if they fit correctly. If a problem with correct fit was detected the management could contact their foreign factory and tell them to stop production until the problem has been corrected. In order to prevent many other customers from having to return these shirts this season they should be withdrawn from their sales catalog until the problem with their sizing has been rectified.
