Few hiking pants are both tough and comfortable. Gamma ARs are the exception.
Lightweight pants don't protect one's legs off trail: in bushes or talus. I sought out pants made of material like Fortius 1.0, used for tough shells. Only Arcteryx makes such pants.
Gamma ARs are as comfortable as lighweight pants, but they protect like chain mail. For instance, their burly weave material breathes. It takes a good downpour for water to soak through (They dry quickly).

Bought for general hiking but First worn in a dog agility final at Crufts 2015 because they look so good. Superb four way stretch suited this activity well. Can't wait to try them on the hill and for scrambling. Very comfortable.

The pant fits as well as True Fit promised, ie 'True To You' with a 4.5 on the fit graphic. As per the Gamma AR pant, my optimum inseam length is somewhat between the Large and Large-Tall--I went with Large-Tall. Some Arcteryx pants fit perfectly in size Large (Nalix) and some fit best in size in LT (Beta AR). The Gamma AR in Large is ever so slightly too short and the Large-Tall is about 1 cm 'too' long (the cufff folds somewhat under my heel when but in socks). Anyway, better the extra length for 3-season use and bulkier/taller footwear.
Apart from sizing, I went with black even though my first pick was Anvil Grey (Anvil Grey LT wasn't available when ordering from Arc'teryx's site and the retailer where I tried on the Anvil Grey in LT forgot to hold them for me during the 6 hours it took me from trying them on to making a round trip home to pick up my AmEx to close the deal.)
The pant holds true to their listed spec sheet. They look very sharp, draping in a manner almost too flattering to be outdoor pants.
Last weekend, I wore them over Icebreaker 250-weight leggings on deck on a crossing of the Baltic Sea during a storm with 50 km/h winds gusting up to 100 km/h (ca. -5C). I was comfortable with no nagging chill over my legs. (On top I wore a Smartwool Midweight (250) LS top, Arc'teryx's Rho AR Zip Neck, Patagonia's Nano Air, and a Squamish Hoody...topped off with a windproof hat--I was golden during my 2-hour stint on deck. Given, the deck was ca. 10 meters above the churning sea so splashing waves wasn't an issue. The DWR on the pant and Squamish dealt effectively with the spray that made it to deck.
I also wore the pants on a 2-day, 50-click hike with a backpack weighing in at ca. 12kg. The pant with its cut and stretch were comfortable and the built-in belt didn't impinge on my comfort whatsoever when worn in conjunction with my backpack's tightly cinched hip belt.
The pant's DWR was as satisfactory as that on most of my other hiking/action pants (mostly Rab). I've yet to wash the pant so I can't attest yet to how the DWR holds up after several such cycles.
I haven't skied in the pants but I plan on doing so soon and the LT's extra length will come in handy then. I can't imagine that the pant won't be plenty tough to handle resort based skiing--but we'll just have to wait and see.
So bearing in mind the limitations of the gauntlet that I've subjected the Gamma AR pant to over the past fortnight, I'm going with a five star rating of said pant--imho, they're functional, tough, sharply tailored, have solid (irl) technical specs, all at a relatively nice price...and they're comfortable on their own or worn over 250-weight merino leggings. In fact I like them so much that I'm going to try to scrounge together the cash to get a pair in Anvil Grey. The only other item in my outdoor wardrobe of technical pieces that I'm planning on redundantly doubling down on is Arc'teryx's Squamish - but that's a rant for another day.

These pants do everything the Arc'teryx description claims. These are my 3 season hiker. I've use these on 60* days and haven't felt like I was overheating. The morning dew beads up and rolls off and they do block the wind well. I think they would work in every condition but the warmest of days and torrential rain.
My only complaint for these and my Gamma LT's is that personally I wish the leg openings were about an inch, maybe two larger so they would fit over my boots a little more casually. But this is just preferrence as if it were the case I would wear them everywhere.

Originally purchased these for backcountry skiing, soon enough they became my go to pant for all my hiking activities where it might get a little cool or wet. Sheds water, good breathability, and very durable. This will be my second year with this pant and I look forward to using them more.

i bought these trousers from up & under in cardiff (uk) ... wow, i have several pairs of assorted arcteryx trousers but these really are something else. The cut and sizing are spot on for me being 5' 8" medium is perfect. The quality of manufacturer was as expected for arcteryx but the fit feels like a tailor made pair of pants. Not the usual baggy outdoor type that others do but just fitted enough with restricting movement. The stretch feels so good and they dont ride up whilst climbing or kneeling.
I wore them during a wet miserable day in the uk ( normal for us) and the water just beaded off without anything getting through. not a downpour i admit but enough to wet out lesser pants)
My beta ar pants stayed in my sack !
All in all i can heartily recommend these pants for at least 3 seasons and for 4 if you layer up underneath.
Well done arcteryx you prove once again that perfection costs but its well worth it .
Keep up the good work,

The product is good. The pants fit true to size but the waist is a bit too big.I hope it can be much more cheaper.Its still a little expensive.

Not sure about value for the money. Seem well made but expensive for hiking in normal weather.

I own three pair as these are my go-to pant for winter hiking. They are comfortable and seemingly durable. There are two things I would change: 1) the button that secures the pant is crap - pops open all the time. 2) adding another thigh pocket would be lovely. Besides that, the other features are great especially the boot lace clip which is highly underrated.

Just wanted to let you know that the Gamma AR that I purchased were a 30 waist which is what I usually wear and these fit exactly as expected. Also, they really are great outdoor hiking, and for me dog walking pants.

Really love the sturdiness and flexibility. Most I live is the length. Thanx guys for taking care of the taller people

The material is top notch. I haven't done any rock or ice with them yet, just some indoor. I'm not a huge fan of the belt setup, seems like it will be finicky with gloves. I also like at least one rear pocket since these will be worn into town after climbing and that is where I keep my wallet.

I have used these pants to cover over 1,500 miles of trail in the Washington and Colorado mountains. I can say that they are the BEST outdoor pants out there. I wear them for hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, snow kiting, and mountaineering.
Unfortunately, I wore my pair of Medium TALL pants out and have waited two years for the TALL sizes to be back in stock. Once they are back, I will likely buy two pairs. Please let us know when they will be available. Thanks

Love the pants and fit. One issue: regular inseam is too long. Consider offering short length sizes throughout the waist range or simply make regular length 32" rather than 33". The classic clean lines of this pant is undermined by the long inseam and the bunched up bottom part of the regular pant legs even when paired with heavy hiking boots. Protection from the stray hazards on or off trail do not improve with an excessively bunched up pant leg at the top of the boot. Otherwise a great pant.

Bought these for my trip to Vancouver. Not as water proof as I was told but overall a great pant for hiking, biking or everyday use.

I received my order but this is definitely a winter pant so I havent worn it yet. Al;berta is having a long Fall! The fabric is strong and lovely and the only caveat is might include is the sizing is not generous so be warned ordering as theres little stretch and size fit as stated.Cant gain any weight to wear these pants. Lovely fabric and workmanship.

My first impression after trying them on is that they fit well, feel warmer than normal pants, and make noise when the fabric rubs against itself. I wore these in the wet bush of Glacier National Park and they did a good job of repelling the water and keeping my legs dry from the morning dew. I did notice that the pants were very hot, if the weather wasn't cold enough. I then wore these to climb the Grand Teton and I already have an abrasion in the knee. The shoe lace clip is a helpful function to keep the pants down. The thigh pocket is also useful with a harness, but a phone in that pocket while hiking is a little bouncy and annoying. A phone in that pocket while climbing also puts your phone at risk for damage. I'm 5' 7'', 160 lbs, with athletic build and size 30-S fits perfectly.

Purchased a medium, tight fitting. (Buy one size up/ strongly recommend trying one in store). High outlining crotch, overall close fitting, pocket punctured after carrying torch inside for a few days. Otherwise, looks good, good temperature regulation, good design

Comfortable, warm, far less than water resistant. Don't count on these to keep you dry in a light rain.

Seem generally good, puzzled by lack of back pocket (yet again Arcteryx, why do you hate back pockets on pants?)

The fit of these pants is perfect. They are quite warm in cool (-3C), wet and windy conditions. The look and feel is nice. I wore these pants for a week straight around town in Vancouver while on business.
My only complaint is that the pockets feel really cheap (and are already starting to show wear). I've only just bought these pants though, so time will tell whether the pockets hold up to the quality I expect from Arc'Teryx!

First off, I am a "deadbird" gear fan. I have 7 different jackets, 7 pair of pants and shorts, and many accessories.
I was so stoked for these pants and to use on Mt. Baker for a week long of alpine training.
The likes:
* Short length sizes (i have a 30" inseam)
* warmth
* water resistant
* look good
The dislikes:
* not too durable
I have a hole all the way through from the outside to the inside from a week of simply sitting on rocks. I would thing they would be more durable and abrasion resistant. I did not misuse or abuse the pant. This was simple from sitting on the rocks for an evening meal and putting on boots in the morning.
so it doesn't look like this will last long if this is going to be common with normal everyday use. A little disappointed.

Gamma A/R pants are supposed to be water resistant, the material is great, the zippers leak like a sieve. Anything in pockets, underwear and even socks (water leaks down the inside pant leg) sodden. This is in a light rain and a couple hours outdoors. Arc'teryx says normal performance. Poor quality zippers for the type of pant and purpose you buy a water resistant pant.

I reached out to Arc'teryx to give a little nudge via an email and they told me to write it here because their designers read these reviews. I had explained that I will not purchase because of large Arc'teryx logo on their clothing. I live where I do not want to present/flaunt like a Vancouver D-bag with expensive name brand cloths. Less is best for a logo.

I've had these pants for less than two years and the side pockets have already failed. They are simply glued on and the glue has failed!!
