Having trouble with one tongue jamming into my shin. Also, two of the lace grommets were sharp and ripped the laces a little bit. Overall, will be a solid pair of boots.

These are well made boots, and I have a pair of slip on Bean gumshoes that I wear a lot and like very much. However, when I walk with these 8 inch lace up boots, the top of the upper rubs constantly on my shins and becomes quickly irritating. It's a very loose fit around the shin, above the ankle, with not enough padding. I can easily fit three or four fingers in between my sock and the top of the boot, it should be snug but not tight. This was a factor in the two sizes that I tried on, 11 and 10. I returned them and bought a pair of Bean Storm Chaser boots. They are about the same height but have a padded collar around the top which is comfortably snug and doesn't rub.
I'd also recommend:

I'm a New England dog walker who constantly slogs through mud, slush, puddles, etc. and so far my feet have been bone-dry after every walk in these boots. They're warm enough and reasonably comfortable but I wish they had more support, like a proper hiking boot. My feet are pretty worn out after a few hours' hiking in them, but some insoles from Red Wing Shoes helped. I also wish they had a vegan (non-leather) option, but with flat, narrow feet my options are limited. They get the job done and L.L. Bean's customer service is second to none.

I bought these boots because I was moving out to Colorado and have never had my own winter boots, I've always just wore my dad's or uncles' boots or some $30 specials that last for one season. I originally bought un-insulated boots online (rookie mistake) and took them to the store to exchange them for insulated boots. The associate was very helpful and happy to go back and forth to get sizes!! I wish I would have known that these boots come in narrow sizes, as my feet are swimming in these! My feet stay warm and dry for the most part, but they're still swimming laps in there!

So, as so many have already mentioned, I did extensive review reading to sort out a size I would need (I do not have store within 200 miles of me, so I had no way to try them one). I'm a shorter guy, with a pretty small foot (7.5-8 in most men's sneakers, with a 7-7.5 in most cowboy boots). I know so many reviews mentioned going a full size down, however the smallest I could go was a 7, so i took a gamble. Standing still, they were okay. As soon as I started walking though, they felt too large, and almost clown shoe-like. I went for a drive, and my foot slid all the way back, leaving a lot of room in the toe bed. I really wish they had a size 6 in men's (or just offered half sizes....). Anyway, I did some foot math, and realized a women's 8 is the same as a men's 6, so I ordered a women's 8 wide (they look the exact same, so no one is going to know). It's just a HAIR too short, but not enough to make it a deal breaker. And honestly, when I'm in regular socks (and not super thick ones), I don't even notice.
Now, we haven't had super crazy weather yet, but these things are definitely very comfortable (although they do still have some breaking in to do). I'm excited to get them in some better suited conditions, but at the moment they have been exactly what I was looking for. Super soft inside, decently warm (and not TOO warm as I was afraid of), and easy to get on and off. I wear them to the gym in the mornings, and like to be able to just slide my foot and back out without tying anything. All in all, very happy with these, and looking forward to many years of use!

I'm a tough sell, and normally do not leave reviews. But, I am somewhat impressed with these boots. I'd probably give them a 4.5-4.7 if I could. PROS: 1. Quality, American craftsmanship (manufacturing origin matters folks....buy American). These boots are ver well constructed. 2. Very comfortable. I tried a cheaper brand, and they were not comfortable at all. The steel shanks in these LL Bean boots makes them a joy to wear. 3. The liner is warm, and appears designed to add a double layer of waterproof protection on top of the rubber bottoms. CONS: 1. As others have mentioned, the top of the boot is not tight around my leg. Maybe LL Bean manufactures them this way in case folks want to put their pant leg inside the boot. 2. The Gore-Tex liner is high quality, but it should be removable or fully sewn into the boot. It's sewn in at the top only. 3. Sizing: it took me three orders to get the correct size. Order a half size down, and possibly a wide (that is what fit me while wearing light to mid weight socks). Overall, I'd recommend these boots to others and look forward to years of use.

Awesome boot. For many of my shoes and boots I wear an 8 1/2 or 9. However in LL Bean Boots I have 7 Mediums. So Originally ordered 7 Medium, since my other pair were 7 Medium BUT with the Goretex the length was to tight, though the width was perfect. I had to return, for a Size 8 Medium which are perfect in length and snug, but when I walk there is a bend on the sides from the outer covering being too wide when wearing one pair of socks. With two pairs for warmth the width is better but still have a strange bend in the outer covering. Overall they are comfortable unless you like a total tight fit. I thought about returning for the Narrow but when I take out the insole it is the right match for my width so I will be going with the 8 Medium, one pair of socks for snug but loose fit, and two pairs for snug and tight. The top of the boot is very wide and would be nice to have something like an elastic or inside cushion. The other note I would like to make is that with the return policy your credit card is charged twice and then you have to wait for the return to be refunded to pay for the shipping of the exchange pair. LL Bean is Top Notch. Looking forward to miles of walking in these boots.

I loved this boot....it is well made and I was glad to see a 12 Narrow could be had but I am sad to say I am returning them because the top of the boot rubbed my shins after only wearing them for less than 15 minutes. I feel like the flap was made out of too stiff leather and a softer leather needs to be used. Sorry.

This is a classic LL Bean item with goretex and thinsulite to make for modern waterproofing and thermal insulation. The waterproofing does work but the insulation is not specially effective. My old Timberland boots are better in that department and my newer Columbia Boots are no worse. The fit and comfort is excellent - but why does LL Bean stick to the silly system of oversizing so that you have to guess (with their ok advice) the appropriate size? Have to admit the boots are very cool - much like wearing a museum piece. But frankly there are warmer choices, equally waterproof, and just as comfy. Bottom line - your love for L.L. Bean will make you buy these boots, they are ok in fit, but for the expense - your mind should make you look at competitors. Incidentally, I first went to my local L.L. Bean store on Long Island NY. They don't have a complete stock of sizes or even any of this model when I came by in November. Employees were pretty useless in advising on the boots. As always deal you should with the experts in Maine - they are more helpful in every way.

I really like boots that are made in this country and exhibit care in their construction. These meet that criteria. They fit great, but in my case they ran a bit narrow and small, probably because of the insulation and Gore-Tex liner. I also needed to add orthotic liners as I felt they didn't have enough arch support for me, but I use them in my other footwear as well. I hope they perform as advertised; these are the second pair for me. The first pair leaked badly.

My boots fit well and I have yet to evaluate the very cold weather warmth, but at approx. 20 degrees F, my feet were comfortable. The only potential negative is that the insoles are comfortable, but have a slightly lumpy feel on the soles of my feet.
I ordered the boots on January 18th and was told that I would not receive them until April 3rd, but you beat that by over one month, I received them on February 24th - - great work!!

The boots are great now that they have arrived. First pair had to be returned as normal size of shoe worn was 1 size too big for this boot. Boot then backordered almost 2 months. But now that they are here and fit am very pleased with the boot

I was happy that my Bean Boots came much earlier than I was originally told. These were my first pair of Bean Boots, so I was unsure of the sizing. I wear between a 9 to a 9 1/2, and between regular and wide widths, depending upon the shoe/boot. I ordered an 8 medium. The size was perfect, but the width was not. I could barely get the boot off my foot, and it was pulling out the liner. But, with everything, LL Bean customer service is fantastic, got a pair of wides ordered, and I am hoping these will be the perfect fit.

I have been wearing these field boots for years with very satisfactory results. The Gore-Tex/Thinsulate is a nice upgrade from the straight leather and works well. Speaking of leather, I am sure these boots are made of cowhide but I don't know what they are treating the leather with these days. I tried to apply some Neatsfoot oil to my brand new pair to soften the leather and darken it a bit and the oil was repelled by the "leather" surface. Customer service suggested I wear them for a year or two and try again.

The Bean boots are great and will last forever, the workmanship is superior.
However we were disappointed after we received them to find that they run large. and we had to return them... THEY ARE NOT TRUE TO SIZE.
This was a disappointment as we ordered in November for his birthday in February due to the back orders.
They are still back ordered so the exchange will not be here until April, My son is in school in the mountains and will miss the boots this winter season.

These boots were bought as a gift for my husband for his birthday. After a long wait I was so excited when the boots were delivered The.boots were good looking and great quality,. but boots were very narrow even in an xtra wide width. Anyone who has a wide foot like himself will have trouble with the fit on these boots...

The boots I got as a gift had the additional GoreTex an Thinsulate with it. It is awesome in snow and rain in terms of keeping my feet warm and dry.
The only bad part is that when I try to take of the boot the inner lining sometimes comes out with my foot and sometimes its tough to take off as well.
Other than that I love them!

My son loved these boots, but they were back ordered before Christmas so he did not get them until January 29, 2016, a late Christmas gift. They are a really good looking pair of boots, appear to be well made and they are even light weight. I will probably order my younger son and husband a pair also.

I purchased a pair 12 N (narrow) a number of years ago and wore the occasionally. Last year when I wore them they again cramped my toes so since they were in good condition I gave them away. I usually wear a size 14 A so when I ordered a new pair I ordered a size 13 N (narrow). The length was right on but the width with heavy socks was too wide. My feet slid around and I could not lace them properly so they had to be returned. They evidently run very wide.

Love these boots, Im usually a 11.5 and heard the shoes ran small so I got a 12 wide. They were a little big so I took the shoes back to the store and they were exchanged for 11 wides very easily. Build quality is great and awesome customer service and warranty.

Fantastic boot for all those messy situations. The L.L. Bean satisfaction guarantee is practically unbeatable and that only sweetened the deal. The few things I would love to see improved are just my inner perfectionist talking.
1. Unless you upgrade to a thinsulate or shearling lined boot, they aren't the warmest.
2.I personally do not like how the tongue beneath the laces is attached to it's sides. It makes them more difficult to put on especially when wearing heavy socks.
3. If L.L. Bean starts offering the classic 8in with a shearling line I'd immediately buy a pair.
4. Maybe its just me, but I cant stand that fresh out of the box look and these boots definitely had it, almost to the point where they looked tacky and cheap. Of course I immediately took care of that the old fashion way. Still, there has got to be a better looking, and still durable bit of material to use above the rubber. And again, if Bean finds it, I'll be grabbing a pair right away.
-Cheers

This is the 3rd or 4th pair I've replaced due to the stitching falling apart. I love the boots, and Bean has been great in replacing them, just wish they would use better stitching material.

I love the boots, but they are just a tad too narrow. I think I just have to break them in since they are leather and the package you are getting is a pair of NEW well crafted boots. The winter in Wisconsin has been warm lately so they fit just right with thin socks.
