I just ordered a pair and love the cushioning and overall fit of this shoe! But the tongue is so short, especially in the left shoe, that it does not protect my upper foot from the very thin laces. It also causes the tongue to be somewhat bunched up and put a great deal of pressure on my foot. I am so disappointed in the quality of this shoe!

. Right out of the box, the X Ultra 4s felt like a dream. Immediately, I noticed the wider toe box and lighter weight than previous versions. I slipped them on for the first time to hike around the Indiana Sand Dunes. I was shocked at how "ready to play" they were with what seemed like little to no break in time. There were no abrasive seams that rubbed against my foot and the tongue to upper joint felt smooth and comfortable. I have owned previous versions of the X Ultra and it has always been a shoe that I gravitate towards when recommending hikers to friends, but it was never really a shoe I would reach for in my closet anytime I hit the trail. Always reaching for my running shoes or my Odyssey Pro's. For the only reason that they just were too much shoe for me, weight wise. The X Ultra 4s immediately broke through that barrier. I was even stoked to hike straight up hill in the snow (kicking in steps and on a light use trail)- the grip/traction was so surprising I didn't even think about it being slick! I typically wear a 7 and I have a wide toe box. The 7s fit perfectly and even with a thicker sock on. I love the updates this shoe received and I'm excited to keep playing in the mountains with them!

These are my go to Spring hiking shoes! They are a bit roomier than other shoes - will be nice in the summer if my feet start to swell!! Super comfortable and sturdy bottoms - my feet don't feel anything while walking on rocks and boulders. Very grippy bottoms, and water resistant!

This was the perfect size, with generous and comfortable toe box but the shoe hits right underneath my ankle bone -- ouch. No way could I hike in these. And while the zip-closing is kind of cool, if you pull it pretty tight you have this very long loop to figure what to do with. If you tuck it in to the top of the laces there is still some slack, again not a perfect circumstance for a hiking shoe.

The are comfortable right out of the box! So far have kept my feet dry and my body stable on our early morning hikes!
I'd also recommend:
I also have enjoyed Merrell and Keen.

Bought these shoes three weeks ago and spent the first two weeks breaking them in across city parks before spending last week walking part of the South West Coast Path with them - during this week long hike the shoe fabric tore in three places! Two tears are inside in the heel area where the two different types of material were stitched together (which now presses hard surface underneath the fabric against my heel, even painfully piercing through hydrocolloid blister patches), and there's also one external tear near the toes area (which would likely compromise the waterproofing of the shoe). I was really hoping these shoes would last for many years and hikes!...

This shoe is a game changer. Provides the stability of a my Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX with a lower ankle and super lightweight. My first test run was on a 7 mile hike and it performed really well! Traction, stability, and grip over rocky terrain was solid with this shoe. Great arch support without needing after market insoles. Love this shoe and will be one of my go-to daily hikers. Salomon is stepping up their shoe game this year. Would highly recommend this shoe.

Feels snug around my narrow heel, supports arch & roomy toe box. Tech lacing is simple, smooth and secure. Can't wait to trail test.

These shoes are very grippy and comfortable! I've worn them on many adventures and I love them even more every time. The color is very neutral and goes with everything. I get lots of compliments. I'd live in these if I could. I've done miles on the AT in them as well as just basic day hikes. I've even worn them to the grocery store.

These shoes fit well, appeared to be good hiking shoes but were a bit heavier than the other Salomons that I ordered.

These shoes perform so well on trails! I've taken them out a number of times on varied terrain and they do not disappoint. The soles are very solid, giving me plenty of stability and grip on slick rock and technical terrain. I love the way they look too! True to size. I have been hiking in Salomon shoes for years now and these didn't need a transition period to break them in. All in all, a new favorite of mine.

These hiking shoes are very lightweight & flexible but offer great protection from all the elements. I've worn them for snowy hikes with microspikes and they've kept my feet warm, they've gone on rocky scrambles and sandy desert hikes. Just an all around great shoe. They did stretch out a bit over time, however. Steep downhill is no issue with these. The Quicklace system is also a real winner.

Love them! Lightweight and durable shoes. We appreciated very nice design and great stability. X Ultra 4 GTX is comfortable shoe model which has quite wide toe-cap. Has user friendly shoe lacing.

These are great, comfortable hiking shoes....right out of the box. I initially ordered the size I typically wear but it was too big. I then ordered a half size down and they fit perfectly. I hiked 10 miles the first day and didn't have any issues. I highly recommend these shoes.

I bought these a few weeks ago. They are so comfortable and didn't need any time to break in! I probably could have used a half size smaller compared to my usual size but I like them nonetheless. It's hard to find black shoes for women so I am so thankful these came in black. The quick lace is a great touch!

This shoe ticks off all the boxes - style, comfort, durability, traction/grip, and waterproofing, all in an extremely lightweight shoe. As someone who's not really a fan of "pink," the mocha mousse color is so tastefully done. I've received so many compliments on the trail! Out of the box, I took this on a few hikes that were 12 miles and longer and had zero issues with blisters or fit. I'm a women's size 8 in other Salomon hiking and trail running shoes and the sizing and fit was the same for the X Ultra 4. The trails in my backyard are littered with razor-sharp, baby-head-sized rocks and this shoe delivered all of the protection and stability I needed for a long day on the trail. Well done, Salomon!

I typically rely on trail running shoes for all my hiking needs but as we head into winter in the PNW, trail running shoes haven't quite been cutting it. That said, this shoe truly has it all - super lightweight (I have actually run in them), impressive traction even on the muddiest and iciest of trails, and great insulation from what I've been able to tell so far (my toes usually get pretty cold. even with wool socks on). As someone who strays away from traditional, clunky hiking shoes, this shoe has exceeded all my expectations and needs.

I always go for boots for any outdoor activity as ankle support is crucial for me. But I have been trying these for a few weeks now and let me tell you, I am not missing my boots. The ankle support and stability these provide is amazing. They are so light and comfortable as well. In fact these X Ultra are 10% lighter while maintaining the same fit and stability of the previous X Ultra models. Last but no least, the traction is amazing. I am SO HAPPY with my new X ULTRA 4 GORE-TEX

My walks average 4-5 miles daily on trail, sand, asphalt. I replace shoes about every 3-4 months. While this is the best show I have bought in years, the fit and quality have been inconsistent. I just bought my 4th pair. Loved my first and third. The second pair did not last and I felt the stability wasn't there. My fourth and current pair seems to need more time to break in (quite stiff) and fit larger than previous pairs.

Run larger than the Ultra 3. The lace pocket opening at the top of the tongue is too low so it is difficult to shove the laces in there. Same grippy sole and comfortable footbed. I preferred the fit on my Ultra 3s.

I love Solomon shoes. The one thing about this particular shoe is that it is a little more bulky than my previous pair. I’m sure it is of the same great quality but will shop Solomon’s for the XA style next time.
