This jacket has become my go-to layer for rock, ice and alpine climbing and skiing. The trim fit allows me to wear it under my heavier winter climbing layers without being bulky, and is breathable to not make me sweat excessively. It provides good wind resistance making it great for winter approaches and ski touring. In the summer, it has become my primary insulated layer on rock and alpine routes as it packs well, is super light weight and surprisingly durable. With the fit and lack of bulk, it's also become my city jacket. My only complaint is that you cannot stuff this jacket into itself and clip to your harness.

I'm not going to lie, I totally underestimated this jacket. I was completely doubting the usefulness of a 'microlayer' until I tried it on for the first time. This hooded jacket is perfect to throw in a pack whether I'm climbing, biking, or hiking. It packs down to almost nothing, but offers the perfect layer to cut a chilly mountain breeze or protect you from a light drizzle. It breaths well and has just the right amount of insulation. It's like a technical lightweight version of your comfiest cotton hoody that you wear around the house..but so much more functional.

This is a layer you throw your pack and almost forget it's there until you need it. It packs down to almost nothing, and is super lightweight, but perfect when you need a bit of extra warmth or protection from the breeze. It was ideal for the cloudy days and light rain, as well as some of the blustery days when you need something to take edge off of the chill. It is stylish enough to wear to dinner or around town after the sun goes down too.

The Atom SL is a very adaptable jacket. Alone it is a great alpine windbreaker and insulating layer. It breathes much better than the Atom LT and therefore is in my opinion a better layer for more active endeavors. When backcountry skiing in colder weather the Atom SL is my third layer. It hits the right level of warmth and breathability and has enough water resistance to stay dry in a light snow. I am 6'2 and 185 and the Large fits well.

The Atom SL is my all-season, everything jacket. I wear it while rock climbing, alpine climbing, resort skiing, ski touring, mountain biking, bike commuting to work, hiking, running, boating, around town, and at work. The DWR lasts super well and beads water (and beer) like a pro. I have washed this jacket many times and re-activated the DWR with a quick spin in the dryer and it is like new each time. This jacket is extremely comfortable to wear in pretty much any temperature, and it is great for cool days, days that are warm with a slight breeze, and perfect for cold winter days when you are moving and need less insulation and more breathability. I've put this thing through the wringer, and I think that the Atom SL is almost the perfect jacket! My few suggestions: better abrasion resistance for alpine climbing (I have some small abrasion tears on the chest from climbing Mount Stuart and other alpine climbs), get rid of the adjustable hem drawcord (this is useless and just adds weight), and add a chest pocket on the inside of the jacket for storing small items that you don't want near your harness/touching your hands when you want to use your pockets. Other than that, this is my favorite piece in my quiver of outerwear/puffy jackets! I can't imagine my adventures without this piece now that I own the Atom SL. Get one and you will not be disappointed! I am 5'5", 120 lbs, and athletic with small hips. I have this in both the women's size M and men's size S and I like the long fit of the men's Atom SL better.

5'10" 160 ordered medium. fit pretty snug, exchanged for large. prefer the extra room in arms, chest, back/ length. I'd say size up so you can layer and not feel so restricted. Fits well over Large covert hoody. excellent soft shell material neoprene like, semi stretchy, and durable. keep the jacket zipped up with the front pockets opened and it is like you have flank vents. you can tell the material is very breathable as soon as you put it on.

I own a lot of insulated jackets and this is the one I reach for most often. It's almost perfectly tuned to the type of average / high output activities we enjoy here in Colorado - climbing, cycling, hiking, etc, etc... While there's no such thing as a "quiver of one" for me this is the jacket that spans the greatest range of activities and seasons. The Atom SL is so lightweight packing it for most adventures is a no-brainer. It does a good job of blocking wind and will shed a light precip. So far it's been plenty durable for rough and tumble activities like alpine rock. When the weather turns particularly cold or nasty I just pull over a shell (an Alpha FL usually) and I feel like I'm covered for everything except truly extreme conditions. The fit is rather trim and will accommodate a light to medium weight base layer easily while also acting as a fantastic mid layer beneath an outer. My two main feedback points are 1) consider extending the hemline a little to provide additional coverage and to stay under a harness and 2) I would also like to be able to pack the jacket into it's own pocket. That being said, I appreciate the high pockets which are still usable beneath a hip belt or harness.

I recently added the Atom SL to my arsenal for hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. The fit of the jacket is perfect, neither too loose or too restrictive. I am 5'11" and 150 lbs, and a medium works perfectly, with room for base layers or work attire. The breathability of this jacket is tremendous. I wore this as a midlayer under my Beta SV on a day of winter hiking in knee to waist-deep snow, with frequent scrambling and steep climbs. I felt warm, but I was never overheated or sweating too heavily. I am frequently shedding layers in such activities with other clothing choices, including the Atom LT, yet this combination worked great. The weather was 30F, sunny, with some wind and high humidity, so I feel confident in the range of this jacket as a mid and outer layer. The no-slip zipper is effective and works. The two hand pockets, while not insulated, are secure and easily carry small objects, such as a wallet or a cell phone during activities. The hood, while useful in windy environments, seems too flimsy and minimalist. While the adjustment cord is placed correctly for tightening, I find that a hood on a jacket such as the Norvan is more protective and feels more secure. While the fabric is thin and breathable, I would love to see either minimal insulation or greater structure to the hood.

This is probably the best fitting jacket I have! My first impression of this jacket was that it was too thin to keep me warm, but surprisingly, when I wore it to go hiking (40 degrees F) I didn't feel cold at all. Overall very slim great fitting jacket as well as extremely lightweight. Very versatile and can be worn in urban environment easily. I only wish there was a pocket inside. I am 5'5" and 135lbs wearing a size XS.

This is a great slightly insulated jacket that I use for running when temps are below 40 F. The hood to the jacket works perfectly when zipped up to the top. Typical high quality Arc'teryx quality!!!!

Super versatile jacket. It packs away to nothing and is alway there, ready to ward off that chill on milder windy days or in damp conditions. I use it for early morning approaches, paddling on windy lakes and when riding my bike on cooler days. Really, I use it whenever my Atom LT is just a little too warm. The fit is true to size. I am 6'2" and weigh 188 pounds. The size large provides me with a comfortable, but athletic fit. One of my favorite Arcteryx pieces...

I added the SL to my Atom stable recently and while it's still very much winter here in the UK, I've virtually lived in it since it arrived. I team it with the LT for stuff outside and wear it around the house in the day. It will really come into its own as the weather warms up but still too chilly to be without a jacket of some kind. It's my 4th piece from the Atom range, just fab. Got it in Carbon Copy as not overly keen on the other Arcteryx colours!

Awesome light weight jacket, perfect for layering. I use it for hikes on a brisk morning. I wish the zipper wouldn't slide down so easy, but it does not bother me that much. Build quality is what you would expect, simply amazing and worth the money for perfection.

I was initially skeptical, feeling that this jacket was too lightly insulated to be useful. After using the sample i got from the kind folks at Arc'teryx Kitsilano i have totally changed my tune. I think of this layer as less of a jacket and more of shirt, it is the perfect weight for cool weather rock climbing, the light insulation doesn't cause me to overheat. The Atom SL has amazingly little bulk for the amount of warmth it provides allowing me to move freely over the stone no matter the grade. The only thing I would change is to have this jacket with no hood, this would allow it to be a more useful mid layer.

WHO: I'm 5'10" 170lbs, 31" waist, Athletic build, living in the Southeast of the US with relatively mild winters. I'm kind of a gear-head and have more jackets than I need in my rotation (just ask my wife). I'm normally size M and I got a size M in this one. I've had this jacket just over a year now. WHAT: In a word, versatile. LT = light weight, add in the underarm gussets and stretchy materials and the shell just moves with you and doesn't get in the way. It's durable, breathable and has great wind and water resistance (not water proof). WHEN: For me this is a 3-season shell, I use it as a stand alone jacket in the spring and fall but may partner it with a midlayer for winter activities. WHERE: I use this thing all over, hiking on the trail or going to the office in the city, this shell just works. And it packs down small enough to take with you wherever you go. We are traveling to NZ south island for a few weeks and this jacket is coming (along with my Beta LT). WHY: It's the best all-a-rounder,I have other jackets that do some things better but I haven't seen one that can do all these things this well. STYLE:I love its look and feel. It has sleek simple lines with a perfect athletic cut. Add in this faint lined texture and the outer has an awesome feel. Note: I have a Gamma LT vest that's about 8 years old now and the new texture of the outer is really great. It's one of those things I didn't even know I needed. It's only drawback is the hood makes the collar stand out and look a little funny (I guess that's the price you pay for functionality). FUNCTION: I "Needed" a good all-a-round jacket. I love to travel and do outdoor actives, so was looking for something have could handle almost any situation. 9 out of 10 The collar with the hood is its only thing keeping this from being perfect. If you're like me and don't like hoods on anything other than a rain shell then the you'll be happy to know the non-hoody version of this jacket gets a 10 out of 10 in my book. Gamma LT vs Gamma MX I have to say I've wanted a MX for over 10 years now. It's a really cool jacket, but the price always kept it just out of reach. Quick match up: the MX wins on the cool factor, those extra chest pockets really set it apart from other players in this field and the extra warmth is nice if you're looking to not have to layer (although this was a downside for me living in a warmer climate). Ultimately it was the LT that came from behind and won this match up for me. The LT just fits my life better. The lightweight makes it better for traveling and just a bit more versatile. FYI: I did opt for the Hoody version due to a sale.

Perfect layer for so many things. Keeps you warm while staying highly breathable. Range of use that has worked well: - As an outer layer while approaching ice climbs on a sunny day on a glacier, or to alpine rock climbs in slightly cool temps - it keeps you warm while vent out sweat easily; - As a mid-layer beneath a thicker jacket such as the Atom AR Hoody in deep winter for alpine or ice climbs; - As a light jacket above casualwear in the city coz it's just so comfy! Decent durability against rock abrasions. I've rubbed it against chimneys and various rocky surfaces while climbing. It lasted me one rock season so far. Just don't stab it with an ice tool and this jacket will do just fine. Hood adjusters are helpful for use with helmets. The pockets are of just the right size. No chest pockets but this keeps the jacket light. It doesn't have pocket stash, but you can use the hood adjusters to cinch in the jacket and it did the job for me.

I use this jacket for all things. I bike commute through the fall, summit summer peaks, throw it over a base layer for a bit of extra warmth on a nippy evening. It moves with -- not around -- my body in all activities. I'm a slim guy, which makes that difficult to say for many products. The hood fits either on a naked noggin or with a helmet, even easy to adjust between the two. The cuffs have a bit of a flap on the thumb side that helps to keep the wind and chill out of the sleeve. Speaking of wind, this thing cuts it, and the contrasting heat-dumping fabric is strategic placed where the wind typically doesn't reach. I really can't say enough great things about this jacket as it does precisely what it is designed to do. That said, the "niche" it fills is almost entirely up to you.

This thing is unreal. The Atom SL is perfect for cold weather activities especially If you burn pretty hot. I wear it on cold weather rock routes, ice climbs, ski approaches, and basically any other time when its cold and I'm being active. Its incredible how breathable the Atom SL is. If you don't generate quite so much heat I would consider going for the Atom LT, as it offers similar breathability with a little more insulation.

When I first got the jacket I thought it would be too warm or not warm enough but it proved me wrong!! A good layer for cooler summer weather or when higher in the mountains when a light wind jacket is not enough but a heavier layer would make you sweat. Useful in an autumnl chill or when spring has not yet heated up. I would still bring an extra layer if out on a longer/ committed climb or ski tour if you're stopped or stood still belaying. The fit is comfortable, length not too short, and stretch is allows movement. Some people say they don't like the length/style of the cuffs but I found it a nice change to not have velcro on the cuff, keeping it simple and light. It's less bulky than the Atom AR, breathes better than a fleece (and looks better), but obviously is not waterproof. Pockets were a good size and no internal pocket also keeps down the bulk but hem and hood adjusters are useful. I've worn it on climbing and hiking trips, + when running in very cold temperatures / altitude, and it looks good to wear around the rest of the day.
