I am 5'6" tall, 160 to 165lbs, 40" chest, 32" waist. I wear a size medium which fits well by itself or over a light sweater. I can even layer a medium Atom LT underneath. The fit is great, but being a shorter, stockier guy the sleeves tend to bunch up too much in my opinion, but I'd rather have the sleeves too long than too short. I live in Minnesota so this jacket has kept me warm in -10 degree weather with a sweater underneath to 20 degree weather with a t-shirt. I tend to run hot so around 20 degrees I'll switch to my Atom LT and use that to about 40 to 50 degrees.

I heavily debated between the Atom LT, Thorium and Cerium jackets and ended up going with the Atom AR. For me, the Atom AR is a great compromise to the aforementioned. It is light, warm, and functional. I am very impressed with the jacket thus far. I only wish the colour selection for an Atom AR included the Admiral. I believe the jacket will insulate well with and without my Gortex shell while doing activities such as hiking and skiing. It appears to insulate, break the wind and repel water well. The water repellency and ability to deal with moisture (due to the corloft) was a huge draw for me over down. However, for me it was a difficult decision as my previous jacket was down which was super great and comfy. It didn't perform as well when wet which was limiting for me as I wanted the ability to use it in the cold alone, or as a midlayer and while doing activities such as hiking and skiing. I think this jacket will be a good compromise and will allow me lots of flexibility due to climate, weather and varying activities.

I'm using this as a warm layer under a shell but also as the top layer over normal clothes walking around the city. Feels light and fits quite nicely. I'm athletic build, 180cm 80kg, and size m is good for me. If you like a jacket to be roomy then sizing up might be good. I have the an Arenite, Gamma LT and Beta LT from Arcteryx and all of them are size m. I'd say this is a great jacket for walking around town couple degrees below zero and going further down when doing moderate exercises. It holds up against wind pretty decently but nothing like a shell though. I was comparing this agains the Atom LT and Proton AR but decided on Atom AR as this felt much warmer for Finnish winter where the daily averages are around -10c and can go well below -20c during winter.

Absolutely love this jacket. I have used it for all kinds of activities: backpacking in Colorado, skiing (as insulation for my shell) and just running around doing errands. I like that its synthetic, so I can get it wet if necessary and not have to worry about ruining it. The Atom jacket has held up well for everything I've put it through and is definitely my go-to warm layer.

I got it about 7 months ago to replace an old Mountain Hardwear Compressor jacket. I am about 5'9" 150 and hover between a medium and small in most clothing sizes. I would say that this jacket is a little undersized compared to most because the medium fits me perfectly, with adequate room to layer underneath. This isn't really a warning so much as an fyi, but the jacket is much warmer than the jackets it is often categorized with, like the nanopuff or compressor. I was looking for something with a little more warmth, so I am completely happy with it. If you find the warmth provided by those jackets to be inadequate, then the AR will be great for you. If not, I would maybe try the LT, (although I have no experience with the LT) As far as the positives go, it gives both a durable feel, while also being able to pack down pretty lightly, though not as much as my compressor, mostly since it has more insulation. For being so warm, it does breathe very well. I mostly use it for walking to work and relaxed hikes, but when I do feel warm, it doesn't give me the feeling that I am covered in a wet plastic bag, as many jackets do. The fleece-like material in the pockets is really helpful when you don't have gloves, but it is only on the part the back of your hands will touch, not the palms. Also, when zipped up all the way, the jacket really protects your throat more than most do. As I said, it is a very good jacket. Just by touching the different materials, you can tell that they are high quality and durable.. And it will keep you very warm while not weighing you down. I do have a few critiques, which I wouldn't really call complaints because they are pretty minor. First, even when adjusting the hood, it doesn't really fall flat or stay close to my head. It generally works well, and never falls off, but when wind hits me from the front it can go right onto my ears. Second, I wish that it had the big open interior net pockets like my compressor did for storing things like gloves or snacks. the interior pocket on this is shaped well for a smaller bottle (vitamin water bottles fit perfectly), but its not really good for gloves considering the shape and position of the pocket. Lastly, I do wish the hand pockets were completely lined to give the good warmth for when you don't have gloves. the pockets on the atom ar get the job done, but aren't quite as comfortable for cold fingers as the compressor ones, which were fully lined. I will say though that the amount of insulation around the ar pockets means that they will warm your hands up pretty quickly. To close, it is a very high quality jacket, and I strongly recommend.

I bought this jacket to use it as a warm, insulating, but also breathable midlayer under my Alpha AR shell for alpine climbing/hiking on the Alps over 4000mt. I'm really satisfied with this product because i think it has the right level of warmth to keep you cool at cold temperatures without being bulky or obstructing your movements. It fits true to size: i'm 1,73mt (5,7ft) for 54kg (119lb) and i always buy a small size... i picked small also for my Atom AR and it's perfect. I can wear under it al least two layer! If i had to find a flaw, i'd say that it's a little bit tight on shoulders, but probably that's a personal/uncommon opinion because i'm a climber and my shoulders are quite wide... Anyway, this jacket is so nice that i think i'm going to use it also for my city walking in the colder periods of the year!

This jacket fits me perfect. I got a large I am 175lbs 5' 11". It is incredibly warm for its weight. I have slept in it on camping trips. Pack it in my backpack for an extra layer on hikes. I like its style and would buy this product again.

I am a bloke, and like all blokes I like my jackets. I work in the outdoor industry and consequently have access to lots of wonderful products - but this one single item is the best bit of clothing I have ever had. I use it daily going to and from work, in the rain (albeit if its chucking down I would be wearing a more appropriate hardshell), it the snow, when its over cast and when its cold or cool. It is just so darn versatile. I also go up into the Canadian Arctic each year and on the milder days, this is my coat of choice as an outer layer, and when it gets freaking cold, its part of my layering system. I cant recommend this jacket enough -love it to bits!!!

Just got this jacket and decided to bring it to Beech Mountain for a family ski trip. Temps on Friday night in the high teens with wind and I had a t-shirt and light fleece on underneath. Stood outside for about 15 minutes and it was sufficiently warm. Slipped and fell in the snow with no gloves on and my cold, wet hands warmed up quickly in the fleece lined pockets. Wore it all day under a ski jacket with a t-shirt at 20 degrees and it was at times a little warm but a quick unzip and temps were regulated. The hood is fantastic, Insulated, and warm. The jacket is warmer than you'd expect for its weight due to the high about of insulation around your core. Inner zip pocket is perfect size. First Arc'teryx product I've bought and it won't be the last. It does run in the "athletic fit" range. If you're an athletic or slim build stick with your normal size and you'll be able to comfortably fit a think base layer and fleece under. May consider a size up if you are a little bigger boned. Check out my full review on www.geartestlab.com. Taking it on a hike up Mt. Mitchell this weekend.

Bought the Atom AR out of a group of choices from different brands. Well made and tailored. Warm as an outer layer, will protect from wind and shed away a light rain, but with heavy rain need to wear it under a waterproof shell. Works fine as a mid layer. Sizing will allow to layer it as needed with fleece/pile and light or heavy underwear, and even a combination of light and heavy underwear. In one occasion i wore it on top of a light down jacket, fleece, and heavyweight underwear.

I have to say this is my first Arc'teryx product ever purchased and this jacket is absolutely amazing! I am truly amazed at the detail and quality that has gone into this jacket. It really is a testament to how great this companies products are. I love every single thing about this jacket! There are so many little details that are thought about for this jacket like the extra warmth in the hand pockets, the warmth in the hood, the amazing resistance to wind and rain along with the crazy warmth this entire jacket has! I was just in 5 degree weather with just a T-shirt on underneath and 15-20 mph winds and this thing still kept me very warm!!! Especially when I had the waist chords pulled to tighten around my waist! Thank you Arc'teryx! I will be from now on be purchasing anything I need for winter from you!

Until the last minute I was in doubt between the LT and the AR. I went for the LT hoping it was the right choice and warm enough. This jacket did not disappoint me. It fits like a glove, it's warm and comfy, exactly what I hoped. I wear it in town on daily basis and I tested it also out in the woods, with -2 C degrees with just a Rho AR shirt, and Iit was perfect. Another piece of equipment which makes the difference for me.

I am an aficionado of mid layers that can be worn as an outer layer and are light, comfortable and very warm for their weight. My two favorites are the Atom AR and Nano Air. The Atom may be a tad less stretchy and light compared to the Nano but offers a little more wind resistence and so is better as an external piece. The Atom is super comfortable and very warm for its weight. It's one of my go to pieces. It works for me down to 25F or so with a base or light mid layer and down to about 15F either layered umderneath or with a shell, both assumimg light winds.

I am new to Arcteryx brand and I always wanted to have one so I eventually got a chance to purchase Atom AR Hoody in October. This jacket is unbelievably warm and incredibly light, highly compressible, breathable . Awesome for winter sport activities or casual use in the city so it is All-Round. Very soft and pleasant to wear with perfectly placed installation. It is kind of pricey but worth it since there is a great thought and smart design behind this jacket...

I find myself wearing this jacket a lot, it's my new go-to layer. I wear it hiking, under a shell while skiing, running around town, or just if I feel cold and want to warm up in a flash. It packs very compactly and the snug sleeve cuff keeps them out of the way and prevents drafts.

Bought this for snowboarding in Val d'Isere in January. When it arrived I was surprised how thin and light the jacket feels. Despite several successful below-freezing dog walk tests, I didn't have enough confidence to discard my Rab -30c down jacket and OR belay/apres ski down jacket, so took all three on my trip. Mad weather this year with no days above freezing, several days of -20c and the last day added 80kph blizzards to the mix. This jacket took it all in its stride, with just a Phase SL base layer beneath! It beggars belief. Yet, you move into a warm bar for a vin chaud and don't have to remove it to avoid drowning in sweat. This is so versatile, I wore it on the flight home and didn't use any other jackets on the trip. Have since used it for my London commute and even on chilly May dog walk mornings. Extremely comfortable. The best cuff design I've yet seen. My only gripe is that the collar seems large, but on an Arctic day you'd need a scarf anyway and on a chilly day, this does allow excess heat to vent. This will be my jacket of choice - my only jacket - for cold mountain activities. There is alien technology at work here. Dad knows it and has bought his own.

This was a pleasent surprise. Fit was good. It is much more water repellant than I believed, and can be used in rain without a Shell. Also, it is warmer than expected. Much warmer than the fleece. For me, it works by itself down to around 6 degrees Celcius.

Agree on the strange fit, try one on if you can. That said, a medium fits me well and the jacket is amazingly warm and comfy. I run very very cold (I layer a thorium hoody under my therm parka!) but this jacket is magically warm. I bought it as a spring jacket for low-medium output activities and I'm wearing it over a wool base layer in the final throes of winter and it's keeping me very warm. I love it!

I had read a lot of reviews about the Atom shedding it's down...however I haven't seen any of that yet. So far this is an awesome jacket and I can't get over how it's at the same time very warm but also really breathable. So that means when I go inside I don't have to take it off. It doesn't specifically talk about being very water resistant, but I live in Oregon and I have put it through some paces in terms of rain and it's been amazing so far. Have yet to feel wet. Will definitely keep shopping here!!!
