I am a former runner with a neuroimmune disease and osteoporosis. I have balance problems, high arches, chronic Achilles tendonitis, and multiple healed stress fractures in my feet, as well as knee and hip pain. I wanted a pair of light, neutral walking shoes that felt secure with each step but didn't have unwanted stability features. After taking full advantage of the Run 30 Guarantee, I can say with confidence that these are the perfect shoes for me, and I am a convert to zero drop! The other shoes I tried were Brooks Glycerin 8, Hoka One One Bondi 6, Altra Torin 4, and Altra Torin 4 Plush. When I was still running, Brooks Glycerin was my favorite shoe, so I was expecting to love the 8s, but the sole felt painfully hard to me and, after a 2 1/2 mile walk, I had foot pain that lasted for the rest of the day. For that I could have stuck to my 22-year-old Brookses! The Bondis felt like gigantic wide boats, and they went right back into the box. Of the Altras, I initially loved the cushioning Torin 4 Plush, but for me the squishiness of the insole made it harder to balance and get a good sense of what I was standing on. I ordered the Torin 4 to try on the recommendation of an Altra customer service person; the insoles felt good, but the attached tongue made it a struggle to get them on. The Lone Peak 4.5 is just right. They feel lighter than the Torin 4 Plush (I was surprised to discover that they are actually 0.2 oz heavier) and they fit my slightly narrow feet so well -- no heel slip, and lots of room to wiggle my toes. Each step is secure, thanks to the great grippy soles, and I am walking faster than I have in years, with less post-exercise pain. I am so pleased to have found this brand. Thank you, Altra, and thank you Zappos for letting me try so many shoes!

Finally, a return to the spacious toe box Altra is known for! Please don't go back to the tight fit of the last 5 years!

These are seriously the most comfortable, magical shoes I have ever had on my feet. Super comfy, right out of the box. The wide toe box is perfect for my squarish feet. I am an ER nurse, and noticed several coworkers at my new job wearing Altra shoes, so I started asking around and doing some research. I took a risk and wore them to work the day they came, and I can't believe how my feet don't hurt! I am so impressed. They're also super cute, which is an added bonus! I'm in love.

These are superb; they have room for my high arch, orthotics and bunions! And I can even wiggle my toes...

This is the second pair of this shoe I have had. I have bunions and heel spurs and these shoes are comfortable (I wear them with inserts). I’m not a runner but I wear them for neighborhood walks. The first pair started to fall apart on the top and I thought perhaps my pant leg was rubbing on it. I finally replaced this pair when I got a whole in the toe. My second pair (grey/blue) I have only had a few weeks and they are already coming apart. I’m pretty disappointed. It’s summer and I’ve only worn them with shorts so I know it’s not from my pants.

I normally wear a 8.5, but with this shoe, I ordered a 9. It's my 3rd set of Lone Peaks, and I absolutely love them! The toe room is perfect and helps to eliminate toe discomfort. Great shoes for running trails, and they offer good stability. So happy I found these shoes!

I am always skeptical that footwear will live up to my expectations, and I venture to look at footwear that only has five-star reviews. When I received this pair of hiking/walking shoes, my jaded eye immediately started looking for fault. When I tried the shoes on, they felt tight in certain spots--a problem readily resolved simply by loosening the laces--I know! Duh! Then I looked upon the vamp of each shoe with misapprehension. No need. Although there is a bit of extra space, better too much than too little. I actually can freely wiggle all my toes in these shoes (disconcerting at first!), and my left foot bunion was not pinched by the shoe at all. Unfortunately, I cannot find any fault with these shoes, and delighted--and gratified--to have finally found a pair of shoes that readily support my ankles and feet. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

I’ve been wearing Salomon trail shoes for many years. The last couple pairs did not fit well. I have both bunions and a hammertoe so I need a wide toe box. A friend recommended Altra Lone Peak. At 76, I no longer run, but I do walk and hike about 5 (or more) miles a day. Since I’d never worn zero drop shoes, I was very mindful about what was happening with my body when I started wearing them. I could tell I was getting stretched in the bottom of the foot, the Achllles, and the calf. My posture changed (for the better, I believe). I’ve now used the Altras both on hard surfaces and on trails and have done over 70 miles in them. Though at first my feet felt “tired” after 5 miles, I never got pressure points or blisters. My bunions are happy. My hammertoe doesn’t rub. Thank you Altra for giving my old feet this level of comfort! I plan to buy another pair in a different color just in case they change the style. The ones I have are the berry color which I like. I’m between a 9 1/2 - 10 in athletic shoes, and the 10 gives my toes the room they need without being sloppy. I appreciate Zappos service - thank you.

I have been a fan of Altra shoes for a few years. I try others and come back to them because of the great comfort in the toe box. Other athletic shoes always feel too tight after wearing them. I use the Lone Peaks for walking off road, hiking, and yardwork. If I'm outside when the grass is wet, my feet stay dry. If you've never tried Altras, I highly recommend.

Love these shoes. The wide toe box is really making a difference in my ability to make miles on the trail. The soles are crazy sticky... clambering along wet rocks on the Appalachian Trail were surprisingly stable. Very pleased. One odd fit thing I experienced is that the shoes felt too small from top to bottom. Not in width or in length, but somehow the ball of my foot was squeezed top to bottom, which caused me to go up a half size. But I love the shoes, even so. Color is also great. Not black but not crazy flashy. Enjoying them a lot.

I've gotten Altra Lone Peaks in three subsequent versions now - 3.5, 4, and 4.5. The 3.5 were definitely the narrowest toebox, but also the most padded & squishy by far...almost too much so. When I got my 4's, I was a little shocked at how much less cushion there was both in the footbed and around the collar below the ankle bones and on the Achilles tendon; but, I got used to them and they became my go-to shoes. Then I got the 4.5's. Fit-wise, they are much like the 4's as far as roomy toebox and plenty of room for the foot to spread out. However, they now have basically zero padding around the collar & heel tab and I will have to wear something higher than no-show socks or I will have a raw bloody Achilles tendon in no time flat. I don't know why Altra insists on changing what isn't broken. I can only hope that some version in the future will circle back and be more like the 4's that I loved so much again.

I got my normal size 7.5 and ended up exchanging for a size 8, which fit way better. These are really cool shoes- the zero drop works different muscles in my feet and legs that normally aren't engaged while walking and hiking. These shoes have a ton of room in the toe box, which is great for my wide feet and bunions. They have great support for my heel, which is on the narrow side. The only thing I'd say, is that they don't have great arch support, so you have to pay attention to how you land your feet so as not to hurt your knees. Overall, these shoes are great, but maybe not for someone with flat arches.

I have difficult feet that have become progressively worse over the years. I have bunions, hammer toes, crossover toe on both feet. I am a senior, and I walked 2 miles a day. Shoes have been a real challenge, and I had become less than hopeful that I would ever find a shoe that I could wear comfortably ... and without doing more damage to my feet. The Lone Peak 4.5 which I reluctantly tried have been a revelation. The toe box is roomy way beyond any expectation. The zero drop (which I was very skeptical about) has given me a significant sense of balance, and increased energy. I can hardly believe my good fortune in finding this company. And also ... thanks so much to Zappos for your sincere professionalism and follow through over the years.

I typically run trails in the Merrell barefoot gloves, but some rocky trails require more protection. The Lone Peak 4.5 has proved to be an awesome trail shoe. Comfortable and supportive with first run of 7 miles. Couldn't be happier. And they look dope. Trail running in style.

These might not be for everyone , but they were perfect for me. They were comfortable and I could move my toes. The heel didn't slip. They were also light weight and didn't feel hot. I got these for hiking in florida, so I cant say how great they are on rocks, but they had an aggressive tread so look like they would be fine. They had enough padding under the ball of my foot.

These shoes are wonderfully comfortable and seem like they would be great for hiking. I am likely to return with the biggest reason being they just look big and slightly orthopedic. I’m between a size 10 and 11 so I was excited for the 10.5 but it still wasn’t long enough. The 11 fit well but they are very wide in the toe box just making them look big on my already big feet.

I bought these after reading a review about this company making a shoe model for women, specifically. I have been wearing men's Hokas for the past 4 years but my toes have been taking a beating; my second and third toe nails have been changing colors and the nail beds do not look good. These Altra Lone Peak's are flat with a wider toe box and a comfortable heel pad. I have only been wearing them for 5 days so I cannot predict how they will wear. The red/orange color is very nice too.

Oh, Altra. Why U try to fix the Not Broken? This shoe used to be comfortable out of the box, a neutral footbed. I just bought a replacement for a previous incarnation and now the footbed is weird and awkward, with a lift along the outside edge. Within moments my shins ached from trying to counteract it. Sigh. Shoes returned, search for new Old Reliable to commence.

I have owned the male versions of these for the last six months and loved them. Therefore, I bought these for my wife prior to a trip to the Grand Teton National Park. After a week of hiking in these, they began to fail. Where the outsole meets the upper at the toe, the outsoles began to peel off the upper on both shoes. The something happened on my pair, but this was somewhat expected as I had logged a few hundred miles prior. My wife's pair on the hand were brand new, fresh out of the box, and failed at less than forty miles. Comfort wise, my and I both agree that they are superior. They are comfortable for walking around town and for trail running. But their durability on mountain trails is an absolute joke. Unless you are sponsored trail runner, you can't afford to have your shoes fail you on the trails at just forty miles of wear.

I bought these shoes because my doctor recommended them for capsulitis of the second toe. These shoes are extremely comfortable and definitely an improvement over the Nikes I was wearing before. I actually think they might help me heal from my overuse injury. That being said, I was surprised that they started to show serious signs of wear WITHIN THE FIRST DAY -- the fabric on the inner collar is already seriously showing signs of wear. I was extremely suprised by this, since they appear to be good quality shoes and should not look like this after 1-2 days of wear. Not sure if I would buy these again for this reason.

These are awesome! I need a wide toe box but not necessarily a wide shoe. They are perfect for trail/gravel road running/hiking and honestly just wearing around. I think I've finally found the right brand for my foot! Could NOT be happier!!!

I first tried the Altra Lone Peak at the recommendation of my podiatrist. I have a bunion and one foot is fused. My feet hurt! These are much softer in the sole than what I usually wear. I’ve gotten used to the springiness and can wear them all day with no pain. The wide toe box goes me plenty of room. I use Orange Superfeet insoles so can’t comment on the arch support. I haven’t worn them for hiking or long walks but usually wear them inside and out all day.

I was just diagnosed with a plantar fibroma so needed to find a shoe that would help ease the discomfort of my daily walks. I do have to put a little donut under the insole in whatever shoe I wear so bye bye to my favorite birkenstocks. My son, who is a super dedicated trail runner, told me I had to try Altra. I ordered a half size up per his instructions and have been very very pleased. It was very easy to adjust the inner sole and the shoes are so nice and wide and I am almost back up to my three miles. I was worried it was overkill to be buying a shoe designed for trial running for my little walks, but I was wrong.
