With about 50 miles into them, I still cant seem to get the heal to lock. They have a bit of a minimalist feel to them as there isnt much for support. They are pretty well constructed however not the best Altra shoe I have by far.

These would be great shoes, but my left one has a quality issues. The inner of the left shoe's tongue isn't sewed correctly to the shoe which causes the edge to bunch-up right where the shoe lace enters the top, and presses uncomfortably on the top of my foot. At first I thought it was shoe lace issues, but looking more closely (removing laces and looking on the inside) I can see that there are big differences in the way the left and right shoe were made. The right shoe feels great though.

So far I only have 20 miles on them. Yes, the upper around the toe box is too tight with the soles. "Luckily" I have the Vanish R which had two soles and I inserted the skinnier ones in here and the fit is much nicer. My feet seem to not enjoy the upper as much because I had blisters on both my pinkie toes ( maybe I was wearing the wrong socks but, I never had this issue with the Vanish R's). I'll keep running in them to see if they'll break in. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend these for the wider footed persons.

This was supposed to replace the neutral Instinct. I'll start with the positive. I like the upper. And that is all.
As noted by anther review these cause you to roll to the outside of your foot. Add to the fact that these are a little narrower at the toe, and there is less volume in the midfoot to forefoot area. If you get them and they are too tight remove the insole and you'll find exactly what I did. That's a loss of volume answered by making more room by removing the insole. I tried a few 5ks and noticed my feet hurt and my right knee is sore.
I'll lead into this by saying I finished the final 100 days of 2019 with 100 straight days of at least a 5k. All that in my Instincts with zero pain in my feet, or knees. I glad I can return these back into the realm of the Escalantes, and HIIT XTs.
Please Altra go back to the Instinct line. I know I'm not the only person that wants that to happen. More room in the feet. Maybe offer two insoles. One a little thicker to take up the volume, because you can't add anymore, but you can take some up. Adding layers in the cold, and shedding them in the heat. You can only take so much clothing off.

I developed blisters in short runs. I walked in the shoes for a few days to break them in further to no avail. Very little support.

Purchased these shoes to replace my instincts, which I had worn religiously since the 1.5's. These have a much narrower toe box, and no height in the toe box. Bought a 1/2 size larger to try to adapt, but they didn't stretch out in the toe, instead my foot just slid further into the shoe. Please either bring back the Instinct line, or provide much more room in the toe box.

Originally, I LOVED these shoes! The Altra platform is amazing; wide toe box, zero drop, durable-feeling materials, until i actually ran in them. I am a neutral runner, and put in about 40 miles and the outside heal of one of my shoes was worn down almost completley. I am not THAT much of a heel striker to warrant THAT much wear in THAT short of time. I had such high-hopes.

I am a bigger trail running who runs Ultra marathons. When I train on the street I use road shoes. I wanted to try the new VIHO. I wanted a long lasting rubber sole that is lite. However, it is so narrow that it hurts the top of my foot. If you wear a thick sock they are unwearable. I have a D width foot so that is standard. The shoe was made for a skinny, little road runners. Large frame guys do not buy. I have bought Altra for many years and love them, but you guys really messed this one up.
Shoe strings too short. I had to use elastic laces just to wear them. See attached photo. That is as tight as I can get them and it still kills my feet. Buy another model.

Terrible shoe. As mentioned in another review, the base of the tongue is extremely tight and cuts into the top of my foot. Feels like there is a rubber band around my forefoot. Otherwise, the shoe would be very comfortable. I will be returning these and do not recommend any one purcahse.

I own and love three pair of altras, but this was a disappointment. The material at the base of the tongue is too thick and presses against the top of my foot. Incredibly uncomfortable. I couldn't see how these can be worn for any length of time.

I have been an Altra customer for years. Unfortunately they peaked with the initial designs and have gotten worse with each successive generation. Most of that had to do with a progressively flimsy padding material behind the heel that deteriorated quickly. However, until recently they had at least maintained that roomy foot shaped toe box so I kept buying new versions even though they fell apart quickly. With this most recent purchase I echo the statements of many of the other reviewers; Altra has lost its way and created a shoe that is entirely too narrow across the bottom of the laces and quite painful. Now they are just another narrow foot shoe company among the dozens of others. Maybe they will listen to their loyal customers and correct this issue, but it doesn't look like it is happening any time soon. Time to find a new brand and hope that my original lone peaks from 6 years ago hang in there another year or two in the meantime.

It's a foot blisterer for me. Extremely uncomfortable even after 30+ miles, not even a sign that "break in" will fix the narrow issue at the apex of my foot. Long time altra wearer, disappointed by liho.

This is the second pair of Altras I've had to return due to uneven sole issues. The second you put them on you notice that your feet are pushed to the outside edges of the shoe and you'll be walking more on the outsides of your feet, which is when you'd typically replace your shoes. Even had my husband try them on and he noticed the same thing. Bad for your feet and knees. I've been a die hard Altra fan for years. No more.
