I absolutely love my Challenger ATR 5s. More importantly, my feet and my knees love them. Seriously, great shoe. Fits as expected. Nice wide toe box but doesn't slip up the heel. Love the all black color.

Comfortable out of the box. Walked over 5 miles every day in Sicily in February.

Good for walking in wet conditions. I prefer the Stinson ASR for running with the late rocker feature. Wish those came in GoreTex

I work for the Usps and I needed more comfort for walking long hours and shoes that are waterproof! These exceeded my expectations! Very comfy and keep my feet dry and doesn't make them sweat!! I do wish I could have downsized a little bit but they'll be ok.

I was looking for comfortable walking shoes for a while. I tried some of the major brands but I was not satisfied. I decided to give it a try and I fell in love. Now I am shopping for another pair for my friend's Christmas present and another pair for myself. Thumbs up Hoka one one.

These shoes are very comfortable and I love that they are goretex for the rain and snow. The only thing that I would change is to have them in a wide. The toe box is not quite wide and deep enough

This is my 3rd pair of Hoka's and find the ATR 5 a different fit than my first 2. They are not as form fitting, so a little sloppy feeling. However, they are very lightweight and have a nice grippy sole. Have yet to try the GoreTex capability.

I gave it 4 stars, not 5 as not sure the left shoe is waterproof. I wore them running a few days ago and the left when git soaked inside while the right shoe was completely dry. Will have to test again as may be a manufacturing defect.

I wore these brand new for 5 days backpacking on rocky, loose packed trails in Colorado. VERY comfortable but not at all waterproof---dunked my toe in the river accidentally and got completely soaked. Dried fairly quickly so I still recommend these. Also, they seem to run a half size long. The tread is great on dry, loose, steep trails.

Typically wear a 7-1/2 and this fits perfect. Have an older Hoka trail shoe with a lower profile heel and was hoping this would be similar but it is a little thicker than I was hoping for but have decided to go ahead and keep

I've been wearing Hokas since they came out. I've tried many but like the Stinsons the best for running (the speedgoat and mufate have far better treads but are just too dang narrow, even if I buy the men's). I'm an ultra distance runner who lives at 11,000'. I have been looking for a winter trail running shoe forever. I've tried them all. My runs are always trail and always in fresh powder which is rarely less than 6". Though I don't like the non WP Challenger (not cushy, beefy, or solid enough), this almost fits the bill for winter running.
Pros:
- It's wide enough in the toe box. YEAH!!
- It's actually waterproof. I don't need it for water, so I can't say anything about that, but in the snow it works pretty well. I must wear heated socks as these aren't warm at all, but it's doable. Last weekend, we got about 4' (yes, feet) of snow. I broke trail for over 10 miles 3 days in a row, in knee to thigh deep snow, in below 0 temps... I went out to run but nope, that was all walking. They worked great.
Cons (for me in the snow):
- The treads are somewhat worthless. They are slick and don't grab anything. (But I'm used to far more aggressive lugs.) Since I'm using them in the winter, it's not a huge deal because I wear spikes. But it'd be nice to get better tread.
- A serious almost deal changer for me is the treads are solid across the bottom of the shoe. What I mean is, I must wear gaiters. Period. There is not even 3/4" space on the shoe tread (between lugs) under the arch to put a gaiter strap. I've made due but not sure I can much longer.
- I don't think I could wear these say on rainy days (though it doesn't rain much here). Not cushy or stable enough.
Overall:
A great shoe. It has already saved my feet. Winter is long up here so these will help get me through (that is if can figure out the gaiter issue).

I've been on the trails in the Challenger ATR 5 for 6 months and love the shoe! It has taken care of the severe pain from the significant arthritis I have mid-foot. But now it's the mud/rain season in the Pacific NW and I need waterproof shoes. So I ordered up the Challenger ATR 5 Goretex in a women's 7.5. The shoe is warm and waterproof, but unfortunately Hoka doesn't make the Gortex version in a wide width (nor does the men's version go down to a size 6.5). And because of the Gortex, the sides of the shoe are less forgiving then the regular Challenger. At first, the regular width seemed to fit okay. But by my fourth outing, my left foot was in agony. So sadly, I'm packing up the shoes and sending them back. If you don't have wide feet then I would strongly recommend this shoe. But if width is a requirement, you'll not be able to fudge it with this shoe.
I really appreciate Hoka's 30 Day Guarantee. And I would REALLY appreciate it if they would offer a rocker shoe that is both waterproof AND wide.

Very comfortable foot bed. Too narrow though. Ordered the men’s version and those are too narrow as well.

These shoes don't seen to have the cushy sole like my other Hokas Also, I don't think my feet will stay warm in the shoes during our Oregon cooler Weather

Does she doesn't have any support and it seems to be allowing my foot to pronate. I don't want to give up on it because it fits well and I'm still trying to figure out what kind of foot bed to use.

I purchased these for two reasons: I have foot issues that mean I need a stiff sole, and wanted waterproof for spring weather walking. I had a pair of Hoka shoes prior that I loved but it was time for a new pair so I went with these. THE SOLE IS VERY STIFF, and surprisingly, too stiff for my feet. I have stopped wearing these as they HURT. I will still purchase Hoka shoes, but these are going back!

I've owned Hoka's before, but this pair made my Achilles ache. My PT said they were probably rolling my foot inward. I have super high arches so I am not prone to that. I returned them.

Honestly these shoes are too stiff and hard for me. My heel hurts with every step I take. Unfortunately I wore them outside so am not able to return them but won't be wearing them anymore.
