I'm a long time Hoka lover (Bondi, Akasa, Tor Summit). Looking for a lightweight waterproof hiking/trail running shoe for my not-wide foot, I tried these Speedgoat 4's. Please, please, pay attention to the reviews that mention chafing from the thin, stiff tongue on this shoe. For me, it was unbearable, so they're going back. Otherwise, the shoe seemed great. The perfect width and flexibility, nice and light. Too bad. Please fix the tongue, Hoka.

I'm a big Stinson fan and I run in any and all weather. Running in wet, sloshy socks got really old so I thought I'd give the speedgoat goretex a whirl since Stinsons didn't have a waterproof version. Speedgoat goretex did not only keep my feet dry during rainy days, it gave me a much better feel for my terrain. Mind you, I also ran it on pavement as well as trails and it's held up quite nicely. Overall a fantastic shoe! Getting a 2nd pair soon!

Just bought these yesterday and did seven miles in them immediately. The soles have wonderful stickiness on rocks, roots and mud. They are responsive and just right cushy. Plenty of support, but light. They even feel springy! I wore them walking around the store waiting for the tongue to bother me, but it didn't then and still didn't over seven pretty quick hilly trail miles. (Top laces through the inside eyelets) These will be my go to shoes for trail running, day hiking and maybe for dirt road running. I might even consider them for short light backpacking trips, but probably not for longer trips with a heavier pack. I'm building my strength back after major surgeries on both feet this winter and these shoes let me fly! My foot surgeon gave me good advice when he recommended Hokas. Thank you, Hoka.

I got these shoes for a recent hiking trip to the black hills in South Dakota & the U.P. in Michigan! They worked perfectly for the 30 plus miles of hiking we did. My feet even stayed dry through some muddy/wet areas! I would definitely recommend these shoes!

Bought these for some extra cushion on my long runs and they work great! No blisters. No break in period. Supportive. Great tread. Light weight. Super happy with my purchase. Oh and the Gore-Tex will come in handy for wet, snowy days.

The sole has an amazing effect on the pressure points on the bottom of my foot and it love walking/jogging trails in them. Great stability and support!

I use these shoes for my outdoor walks in the winter. They keep my feet warm and dry, and help keep me from slipping in the snow. At first, the tongues rubbed the fronts of my ankles raw, but once I broke them in, the irritation stopped. These aren't the most attractive shoes (a little Frankenstein-esque), but they work as promised and I would definitely purchase them again.

I like the comfort but the tongue just digs in with no show socks and that is all I own.

This is a horrible shoe for the price. Tongue cuts into the front my ankle. I had to trim it down with scissors so I could wear it w/o tearing into my skin- skin was almost bleeding at the end my short run. The toebox is narrow for a M or for Hoka. The sole is boat-like (super wide) but the actual shoe’s toebox is narrow. Soft inner sole. Light-weight for its bulkiness.

I wear Hoka Cliftons for walking but needed a water resistant shoe for an upcoming trip. The Speedgoats were perfectly comfortable at first wear, and I had no issues with the tongue being uncomfortable (as some reviewers had mentioned). I use the top eyelet in the Clifton to make it tight enough to prevent it from being too loose (and sliding up and down on my heel), but I don’t need to do this for the Speedgoat. I don’t know if this is due to a width difference or a style difference. I prefer the look of the Clifton because the Speedgoat appears wider than the Clifton at the front so has a chunkier, clunkier look, making my feet look bigger on my short body. Even so, I love the comfort of Hoka shoes for walking, and I was happy to find a pair to use in wet weather.

Purchased the Speedgoat trail shoe with GoreTex. They performed amazingly right out of the box; went on 3 separate hikes, up and down hills mostly. Splashed thru a small stream as well. The comfort was awesome with no "break in period" (never with Hoka!) and the GoreTex kept my feet dry and therefore warm. Thanks Hoka!

I love these shoes. I needed a waterproof sneaker for rain and sleet in Vermont. Tried Sorels, but the fit and lacing were off. Even though they seemed pricey, I decided to try the Hoka gortex. I read that some people didn't like the tongue--yes, the fixed tongue makes it a little harder to get the sneaker on, but on the other hand, the tongue never shifts around. I have a borderline wide foot, and my usual size 9 fit perfectly both width and length. The arch support is even better than my Brooks sneakers. Bring on the rain!

Hoka’s reputation does not fail you here. I have not tried out the gortex aspect of the shoe yet so can’t comment. The shoe fits as expected from the brand. I usually buy a size 6 1/2 in this brand and the 6 1/2 in the speed goat fit perfectly.

I've always been a 9 in HOka even thought I'm normally a 9.5. I backpacked the Grand Canyon in these last week. 5,000 vert loss and gain and no blisters. I will concur that it took a few days for the stiff tongue to break in. I just tied the tongue half bent with the laces and used elastics around the mouth of shoe at night to break them in quickly.

I have an old pair of Hoka’s that are sz. 7.5 that fit fine so I ordered that size... they were too tight to even consider wearing! I returned them and decided to go to a local store that carries several styles of Hoka’s so I could get the right fit without shipping back and forth. I will add the shipping was extremely fast!

I have the EVO SPEEDGOAT and love them but needed something waterproof for rainy days delivering the mail. These are great and feel just as comfortable but like other reviews mentioned, you MUST wear crew socks or longer because the tongue on this shoe will cut into your ankles! I would've given them 5 stars if it weren't for this flaw. I really hope they fix it. I still have red patches on my ankles from when I wore them with short socks a week ago. Other than that they are durable, great tread, waterproof, and nice fit. I wear an 8.5 in normal shoes but normally order a size up for running. Hoka's run slightly large to me so I bought a size 9 in these which fits great and provides a bit of extra room to accommodate for swelling during longer runs. I walk anywhere from 5-10+ miles per day. Feet are: medium width, medium arch.

Super comfy footbed. Really wanted to keep these. But the tongue! I've heard of sharp-tongued humans, but not shoes. Ouch. Maybe it would get more comfortable, but I'm just not willing to risk it. I'm returning them.

Very lightweight and plush amazing bounce and cushion and love that it’s waterproof with amazing traction too. Too bad it cut into my leg during a 5K run. Returning it because there’s nothing to do to correct a poorly thought out product. The tongue is a sharp, raw edge with no padding as other shoes have so the raw edge cut into my leg with each stride. Bleeding by the end of the 5K but I had no choice but to continue

The tongue is hard and rough, it dug into my ankle. Even with longer socks, it is so stiff it digs in. I loved the way the shoes fit (ordered half size up from usual size) and how comfortable they are on my painful neuroma and thought about whether I could cut the tongue out. But for the cost, I decided to return.
