I usually wear a max size of 10 in athletic shoes so I was surprised that the 10 was short. If you have a Tailor's Bunion (bump on the pinkie toe side of the foot), the shape of this shoe/toe area looks perfect. I have a big bunion on the big toe side and the shoe was rather straight there. Not as comfy as I hoped for so I’ll be returning these. My podiatrist recommended this brand so I may still try a size 10.5 but I’m a little nervous it may not work out either.

I've owned 3 pairs of the Altra Lone Peak and the Escalante runs very long compared with those, at least 1/2 size too big. They are stretchy and don't offer a lot of support. I returned them.

I like the large toe box but my foot is not shaped the way the shoe is. My second and third toes are longer than my big toe so they hit the curve. I guess I’ll have to go back to the traditional shoe shape

Ouch -- waaaay too tight across the ball of the foot; I couldn't even get my foot into the shoe without removing the insole. On the plus side: toe room was good, as expected for Altra.

My foot doctor told me to try these but I did not realize they were so flat and wide so I'm not sure what I'm going to do but these just don't work.

Altra, I love you so much, but I'm not loving these shoes. They are just okay. I loved the Escalante 1 and 1.5. This model feels stiff and rigid, and as others have said, the tongue is too short. That said, they did loosen up a bit and feel better once I had about 50 miles on them, and I ran a marathon in them a couple weeks ago with no ill effects. But - I miss the the springiness of the previous model. Bring them back, please!!!

These shoes fit fairly well and are mostly comfortable. Unfortunately I think the toe box area arches inward more than my foot does, so they are not a good match for my particular food configuration.

The heel box on these is really stiff- these shoes gave me blisters on my ankle bone and back of ankle. I ran about 10 miles in them and also got blisters on the ball of my foot from them sliding. I've run in the Escalante runner and solstice most recently (Ones and Superior as well). I've been struggling to find a good shoe from altra lately tho.

I broke an ankle and now have hardware in that same ankle. The original shoe I purchased roughly 2 maybe 3 years ago was "perfect" - the 'collar' of the shoe didn't bother the ankle - but the new design is too stiff and high; makes the ankle ache/hurt. I agree with other reviewers - why did you disturb or mess with perfection. So many shoe designs are either too high OR too stiff/hard for me to wear walking/running shoes comfortably.

I fell head over heels for the 1.5, ditching a shoe I had been running in for 10 plus years. The 1.5 wore out and I ordered a 2.0.... such a letdown! Stiffer upper and my foot hurt after only a mile. I immediately went to my local running store and bought out the remaining 1.5s. Please bring them back!

I have a pair of Altra trail running shoes that are terrific, love the wide toe box. These have a more exaggerated shape, with a deep curve on the inside edge at the ball of my foot. Uncomfortable. I don't think they will fit anyone correctly, as no one's foot curves that way.

Awful. The last model of these were awesome and I was looking for all black so I could wear them to work (that's the 2 stars). Luckily the Escalante came in all black, but these are not like the last model. They are too stiff, the back of the shoe digs in my ankle and creates blisters.

I was initially concerned that these felt narrower than the Escalante 1.5, and I was right should have sent them back within the 30 days. But what I appreciated so much when I switched from Brooks to Altra in the 1.5's is lacking in the 2. With the 1.5's, my neuroma was unbothered and my calluses disappeared. Both of these issues have resurfaced with the 2's. Very disappointed and hoping that switching to another Altra road shoe will give me back my foot comfort. PLEASE WIDEN THE TOE BOX AGAIN with the next model!

This is my 4th pair of Escalantes (and 8th pair of Altras) and the first time I've been disappointed. I am accustomed to putting a pair on and being able to run 10+ miles with zero discomfort out of the box, but not now! The upper, especially around the tongue of the shoe caused notable pain. I was able to correct this with some creative lacing. The change in the overall stiffness of the shoe caused some numbness in my toes. I sincerely hope Altra reads these reviews, makes corrections and releases a better 2.5 model soon.

I went through 3 pairs of the 1 they were my go to shoe. Was excited to try the 2 and was so disappointed. Not one comfortable run. They were so hard and no spring at all.

I ordered these shoes because I have a pair of Altra boots and love them. I use Superfeet inserts in all of my shoes so the "barefoot" effect of Altra shoes is offset somewhat due to the fact that I use those inserts. I also have a bone spur on the top of one of my feet and in most shoes with an open toe box (no seams) my feet do fine. But this shoe has a seam that was right on top of the bone spur and while I might have been able to live with that, after a day of wearing them indoors, my knee was killing me which was not true in the moring when I put them on. So I returned them. They might do fine for someone else.

Anything with a large toe box, but Zappos doesn't provide a search for that!

I own these shoes in a different color so I assumed these would be the same, since it's the same model, same size. I wore them for a day or two and realize the are too snug. The first pair, from Oct 2019 were made in China, these, Jan 2020 were made in Vietnam. Clearly a quality control problem. And I tossed all the packaging as I assumed they'd be the same!

I was in love with the Escalate 1.0 when it was first released. The upper material was soft and flexible, and the toe box was nice and roomy--which is why I love Altra shoes to begin with. Each version of the shoe gets progressively worse - more narrow and more stiff. I'm hoping Altra can get back to the original design in future iterations, because I'm running out of comfortable zero-drop options.

Please bring back the cushiony bottom of the Escalante 1.5 and earlier models. The fit of these is the best yet in my opinion. I had to return them because the sole is too hard and stiff. There was no spring to my run. They even hurt my feet to walk in. They were like walking on wood. For now I will buy every 1.5 model I can find in my size.

Ahhhh :(
I have been a loyal escalante lover, both the 1 and 1.5, and I am sad to say I cannot share the same positive vibes about the 2...
They actually physically hurt the top of my feet. The structured parts of the vamp are very stiff and puts pressure on my feet really oddly-- the worst offender for me is the bottom of the tongue. It is stitched so tightly and the bonded material is SO hard-- it makes the tops of my feet hurt terribly and I actually start to go numb regardless of how I have the laces. (For what its worth, I do not have a wide foot but do have high arches)
The shoe itself feels very different to run in as well. It is not as flexible as the 1 or 1.5 and for some reason I cannot land softly to save my soul/soles. I'm a reliable mid-foot striker and am landing almost flatfooted in these.
Super sad about these.

They're just okay. Seems like a downgrade from the 1.5. I've tried really hard to like them and have run 100+ miles in this pair but I can't get used to the stiffness of this shoe. The soles are inflexible and heels dig into my skin. They're alright for short runs (or walks) but I wasn't a fan of these for longer runs. The laces are also too short but that would be an easy fix. I'm just bummed about the changes to my favorite model of Altras.

Went to running store because I wore out my second pair of Escalantes. New upper was stiffer and fit differently, digging into ankle. After a lap or two around the store, the tongue consistently slid down under the laces. Fortunately they had a pair of 1.5 in my size (9.5) on clearance - perfect. I love my Altra Escalantes and worry about what I'll get when 1.5 is no longer available.

I love Altra shoes, including the Escalante....but not this version. Four runs in, and I can tell these are t the same. Stiff/ inflexible, and the tongue bunches up. I feel like my feet are heavy. Very disappointed. Toe box is still great. I will still only run in Altras, but not this shoe.

I loved the 1.5 and I am sad. This version feels stiff and not as soft in the cushion department. Less eyelets make it difficult to lock down my foot.

The original escalante was the best running shoe I have ever found. This new one is so stiff and uncomfortable it destroyed my calves and my feet after only a few runs. I stopped using them over a month ago and I'm still trying to get my legs and feet back to 100%. Please please please go back to the original!!
