This bag is the bomb.com- I searched for a convertible tote for a long time and finally landed on this one.
Pros- very stylish and sleek (especially compared to other convertible totes), fabric is very nice and durable, in backpack mode it sits comfortably on the back, the black lug color is awesome! I also love how the backpack straps can be tucked into their own pouch and are not hanging out all the time when not in use. I spilled hot coffee on the bag recently and it slid right off!
Cons- would be cool with an inside water bottle sleeve!

I've waited until after using the Convertible Backpack Tote for 3 months to write my review and I can say that this is an awesome bag! I liked both the Army and Shade colors but ended up buying the Shade version. It is a nice dark grape hue. The fabric has a satin-feel to it but has stood up to daily use and travel like a champ. Dirt and scuffs wipe right off. The fabric makes the bag look nicer than the typical sporty looking messenger or backpack and easily transforms into looking like a large purse. I use it as my daily bag to carry my laptop and an Arc notebook + way too many pens to work. I also fit items like lotion, pack of tissues, small notebook, and charging cables but still have room if I needed to throw in glasses, my phone and wallet if needed. I find that the # of compartments is fine, I didn't need a ton of extra pockets. The ones included with the bag work for me.
For travel I used it as my personal bag in tote bag mode and carried headphones, my 12.9" ipad pro, cables, wallet, snacks, blanket scarf and a cosmetics bag. When I got to my destination, I switched the bag back to backpack mode and used it to carry my laptop to a conference.
Bonus! My 15.4" Dell Latitude actually fit in the built in laptop sleeve - barely but it fits. I expected to have to put my laptop loose in the main compartment but it actually fit in the padded laptop sleeve.

I never write reviews but this bag deserves it. I bought the black one with gold hardware. I had a week long conference for work so there would be airports and also big meetings to attend. The backpack part was great for the airport portion of the trip and the tote bag part of the bag was great for all my work meetings. I didn't look like I was in college walking in with my backpack. Also the material looks sort of satiny which makes the bag look more premium and not casual.
Thinking about also getting the green one too!
If there's anything I could change about it, I'd add more zippered compartments on the inside.

I am a consultant turned PA student, and found myself much in need of a practical backpack that I could bring to clinic. I wish I found this bag earlier. I hesitated to purchase, especially because I wanted the maroon color so it sat in my closet for a few days. Now that I have started using it, its great. Super practical and adaptable to what you need. Nice enough to get away with it as a work bag, conference bag, etc. I was worried it wouldn't be big enough, but I can comfortably fit my laptop, change of clothes, and other things in there. Highly recommend!

This bag is perfect! It is big enough to fit my laptop, a few notebooks, day planner, an umbrella, and an extra sweater and still has a bit of space. Even stuffed to the brim the weight is distributed very well as a backpack and is extremely comfortable. Could not have asked for a better bag!

I bought this bag for work. It is great quality and well made. Plenty of space and pockets for my keys, supplies, clip boards and my lap top without being too big and bulky. I love that it converts from tote to backpack and zips closed. Very secure.

I bought this bag with the intention of using it for work - it's casual enough for our low key office vibe but also professional enough to take with me when I go to meetings. I also go to a lot of construction sites and the convertible backpack lets me have my hands free for drawing, photography, and taking notes.
I was also pleasantly surprised that my 17" lap top could fit in the bag! (The interior protective sleeve is less than 17" but the bag can still be fully zipped).

I love everything about this bag - the color (army), the shape, the quality of the metal fasteners, and the ease with which I can go from a shoulder tote to a backpack. After viewing product photos online, I was afraid the tote would be too long for my 5'3" height, but it's not at all. Zippers are a bit stiff when you first start using it, but loosen up nicely. Easy access side pocket and square front pocket great for storing small umbrella, extra nylon bag and office pass. Doesn't really accommodate water bottle or thermos, but not meant to - great for lugging tablet and papers back and forth from work. Highly recommend - tempted to buy in another color in case Timbuk2 ever discontinues.

I love it as my work bag that can also contain all my personal items - no more multiple bags to carry around! The size and the capacity and the length of the straps are perfect, the multiple pockets help keep everything easy to find. I personally could live without the backpack option, and I'm actually considering removing the backpack straps to minimize any extra bulk and weight, and gaining yet another pocket! Overall, a great bag!

Been spending weeks looking for a water resistant, convertible, backpack tote bag. Boom, found it. Design-wise,it was everything I wanted. The only thing missing was a trolley sleeve so I can slide this over a luggage handle. Here's a pro tip, just tighten the backpack straps and criss-cross the hooks. That does the trick. Tested it with water and it rolled right off the sailcloth. It could do with more pockets like another one below the pocket for the backpack straps for valuable items. Favorite thing is the neon orange key holder so you can locate your keys in the dark pocket. Very stylish, love the versatility and I look forward to using this everyday for work and travel, rain AND shine.

I worried about ordering this bag because of the price, but it's great. It's the right size to hold all of the stuff I carry to work--laptop, books & papers, water bottle, lunch, sometimes other stuff like workout clothes. It's even bigger than I expected inside and *this is key* doesn't look completely ridiculous on a petite frame. The functionality means I can commute with backpack straps and use it as a tote for meetings, classes, and errands. I'm not switching bags on weekends for something lighter weight or less campus-y. Bonus: the key strap is long enough to actually unlock my bike or door without unhooking the keys. My only quibble would be that the front pocket doesn't love zipping around that first corner, but I use the front side pocket a lot more often for grab and go. Overall, the bag I've been looking for for years, and my favorite Timbuk2 product so far.

I've bought other tote/backpack combos in the past and returned them because if they look good as a tote, they don't as a backpack or vice versa. Many bags like this also lay funny when filled up and used as a backpack- sometimes they don't lay flat on your back. This bag doesn't at all- it's perfect as either style. I also love how the straps can be totally hidden so it won't look like a backpack at all if you are in a more formal work setting or just don't want them to annoy you when wearing it as a tote. There are just enough pockets to store things with easy access. I also love the adjustable tote straps and extender at the top of the bag for when I'm carrying more things. I got the jet black with the gold zippers and it has a really stylish look, while still being a durable and useful bag. I'm super excited to use this for daily work and travel.

I wanted a backpack that was convertible for an upcoming trip to Ireland. It has to also be water resistant, light weight and LOOK GOOD. This bag checks all the boxes. Not too big but big enough for essentials for a carry on flight or walking around. Straps are strangely long but adjustable. I got the army green. It's beautiful. Seems high quality. I wish the zippers were a big smoother and locked but those are my only cons.

This is my 4th Timbuk2 purchase, and I purchased this when it came up under new products - taking a chance on it, since there were very few pictures up, and no reviews at the time. So glad I did! I adore this bag. I walk/bike to work, and am a college teacher. I have been looking forever for a non-monster-size bag that can transition from a comfortable commuting backpack to a stylish tote while I'm moving around campus. This bag is the perfect size - I can get my laptop, ipad, some books, my water bottle, and my lunch in there with no trouble, and I don't feel like I'm carrying around a giant pack all day. It's long (but not too long) and narrow, and is wider at the bottom, so it feels compact even when full and is comfortable to carry either with the tote straps or as a backpack. The shape also means it sits up vertically when you have to set it down. The outer material (I have it in black) is quite water resistant and has a nice soft feel to it. I was a bit worried about the sturdiness of the stitching around the backpack straps, but having used it for two weeks, it feels really solid. The zippers seem strong too. A neoprene water bottle pocket on the interior would be nice, but I can live. I also wouldn't mind slightly longer tote straps - even at their most extended they were a bit snug over my bulky winter coat (but who cares, it's Spring!). But despite these minor things, I'm super happy with this purchase, and if there more colours in the future, I'd be tempted to buy another....

I've been looking for a bag that is good for the office, fits my computer, but doesn't feel overwhelming when I don't have my computer and I'm just going out for lunch. I'm two days in and I couldn't be happier (and I usually hate new things for at least a few days while adjusting to the new thing).

PROS: I really enjoy how light this bag feels on my shoulders. I can pack a lot of stuff in it too; laptop 15", makeup bag, keys, wallet, scrubs set, phone, water bottle, snacks and metro card/work ID (I hang this from the lanyard provided on the side pocket). I love the way it looks on me; it is a backpack but it looks like an elegant backpack? lol. I've gotten many compliments... Now, my mom wants one!
CONS: I wish there was a water bottle compartment and more interior pockets.

This is a very well made backpack. I purchased it for commuting to and from work and for traveling for work. I wanted a stylish bag I could carry on an airplane, get my essentials into, and then walk into a boardroom meeting and feel confident. This bag does the trick. There is enough space for my laptop, iPad, headphones, tech accessories (chargers, etc.) cosmetics bag, and planner. The outside pocket is amazing - I can get so much stuff in there, and the side zip compartment is perfect for office badge and keys. Comfortable shoulder straps and easy to hide if going into a meeting and wanting to use a as a tote.
If I could recommend to Timbuk2 ideas for the next generation - add a sleeve for the iPad. and 1 additional internal zip pocket or bottle sleeve, would be nice. And make the straps so they don't slide down when put into place. I tied the end of my strap into a knot, and that is working to keep it from slipping.

Received this bag days before a trip out of the country so didn't have much time to use it before the trip. But it was the perfect bag to take on the plane (rest of bags were checked). I was flying from cold to warm climates and it easily fit the several layers I stowed as I made my way to warmth. Also fit in several books, a knitting project and snacks. The tote handles and the backpack straps made it VERY easy to move back and forth depending on the situation.
The front pockets are roomy and make it easy to access the critical items like hand sanitizer. I agree with other reviews that a way to secure a water bottle would be ideal. I ended up using a caribiner to secure my bottle to the bag which worked just fine.
The fabric got dirty during my travels but cleaned up and looks good as new!
I plan to use as my work bag and will carry my laptop in it plus extra shoes, book etc....

I generally like this bag. The color is great (grayish-blue) and it held up in a recent rain storm. The only thing that needs improved are the backpack straps. every designer by now should know that when you make straps out of nylon, they're not going to hold in place. The heavier the bag, the more likely the straps will loosen.

I love this bag! I like that it can be a backpack or tote so I can be casual or professional. My only issue is with the lack of inside pockets and or pen/pencil slots.

I love it! I use it as a backpack mostly, but enjoy that the tote option comes handy when I move around fast.
One thought for improvement is that backpack straps are not padded. It's not a problem now that is winter, but I am worried I will get annoyed when I wear it on bare skin. Aside from this it is an excellent bag. Looks slim yet it is very roomy inside. Many many pockets and zippers.
