This is my second pair and I am very happy with this shoe. However, I always buy a full size larger so the tip of my toe doesn’t touch the front of the shoe. While I am not a runner, I walk on very wet, muddy trails and these shoes keep my feet dry while offering excellent traction. I also wear these shoes when walking on streets in heavy rain because they are so water proof.

These are my very first pair of Altra's and I'm HOOKED! A friend of mine told me about them after she hiked the Appalachian trail and ran a full marathon. I was nervous buying a new brand of trail runners without trying them on first. I have small feet with a huge arch. The reviews I saw said not to buy a half size up, there wasn't a need and now I'm stoked I listened! Because these babies fit perfect

I bought 9.5 in this and the Lone Peak 4.5. The LP 4.5 was a half size too short, and THIS was a half size too long and broke uncomfortably across the forefoot. Since the other shoe felt great, even when too short, I ended up buying it in a 10.

I absolutely love this shoe. I hesitated because someone wrote a review about the material peeling. It's a shoe made for rugged, wet, muddy, tough conditions so it will not remain perfect forever... mine have slight peeling but does not affect the performance of the shoe. I dont buy shoes for how they look, but how they perform.. not to mention I had to study the shoe to even notice it. My feet stay dry when I step in water puddles, they aren't slick on wet floors, and they even survived a chew attack by my dog... not many shoes are that tough. I do run in these, but primarily use them as an everyday work shoe. They repel dirt, grease and grime which is perfect for me. Hands down, my favorite shoe and i will continue to purchase.

Everyday I love wearing this shoe especially for walking climbing, running it's amazing really it is. I wear orthotic insole custom made for me and this shoe is the best so far after 3 year looking for that perfect fit for me. I especially love that it's water proof Has a barefoot feeling My foot does not slide forward or going downwards Going up hill is very easy especially on different surfaces or terrains The only problem was the back flap I wish it kept from pulling apart As they say nothings perfect but I will say this shoe for me almost is. Thanks for making such a awesome feeling shoe

I'm a 9.5 for most shoes and have bought Altras in the past and had to go up half a size. I bought a 10 in these and they are true to size - which means for me, they're 1/2 a size too big, even with thicker socks. Still very comfortable and not floppy, so I kept them with a bit more wiggle room for my toes. I love the light weight and strong grip of these shoes for everyday walking.

After trying on perhaps dozens of waterproof shoes, I was lucky enough to give these a try. Went with my usual 9.5 at first only to size up. I have a bunion, a hammer toes and wide feet. The toe box is perfect. There is enough lacing to that I can get them snug around the middle and still have roof to wiggle my toes. The material is lightweight and doesn't bother the bunion or the hammer toes. I will be wearing with heavier socks for warmth as these do not look warm. I am not a good person to write about style, but these feel great and no one has commented that they look weird. The wide toe box is only really noticeable from the point of view of the wearer. I got the grey/turq. color. Nice. You can change the insoles, and I did this with some orthotics that have more arch support ( the Journey by Powerstep .. wool full length insole. NICE!). I got this same style (Lone Peak 4) in the non waterproof shoe as well. Happy trail to you all! And as always, thanks to Zappos for letting me try on so many pairs of shoes. What a great service.

I had a lot of trouble finding waterproof shoes. These fill the bill nicely. I am used to going barefoot or wearing flip flops, so the zero drop was perfect. I started out trying the 9.5 but they were a bit tight so sized up to the tens. Perfect. Oddly, they don't look that large. These also leave enough room for some warm socks since I am going to a cold rainy place. I got the grey color with the nice blue laces. I loved the feel of these so much I also got a pair of Torin 4 ( the 9.5 fit well in this style) . And my husband got a pair of olympus which he loves. New to this brand, but will continue to explore it. Thanks to Zappos for letting us try on dozens of shoes!

Yeah, amazeballs. Love them. Did have to order an 8 (normally wear a 7.5), but beyond that - they are awesome. I wore them all winter in VT to keep my toes dry and toasty. The shoes had great grip in the snow and on the icy dirt roads. Ran them all winter and they have held up well, did everything they are supposed to do. I run Lone peak 3.0 for warmer weather (and all winter of 2017-18), it was an easy transition to these for the colder season. Love the windproof, waterproof body. Kept my feet toasty while allowing them to breathe.

Despite the guide's advice I stuck with these shoes to hike and could not have had a better experience shoe wise. We trekked through rain, sleet, and snow and my feet stayed dry. I did wear 2 layers of socks as a precaution. Never slipped on the rocky terrain, the wet grass or the mud throughout the 7 days of hiking. I can't wear traditional hiking boots and I so happy to have found these .

If you like a wide toe box, this shoe really fits your desire. I dont think they are the best looking shoe around but I use mine for my daily walk and my toes have all of the room they need to not feel squished. This is my 2nd pair and I'm glad they offerred a lighter color for summer.

Love these shoes. The wide toe box is perfect. The foot shaped shoe style is perfect. The arch support is perfect. The sole is fantastic. The fabric is waterproof. They're well made. I take an 8 in the ones with a higher ankle to accommodate thicker socks, and a 7.5 in the low ones. Super stable, foot-friendly, anatomically correct shoe for walking, hiking, running on trails. Lone Peak 4 is a winner.

I had a problem with running in the cold and snow because most running shoes have mesh uppers and the snow just sticks in them and my feet were always cold. I happened to see these on sale a few weeks ago and bought them and I could not be happier. I wear these for hiking also unless there is more than an inch of snow. Right now I have four different styles of Altras and I love them all.

These shoes fit true to size. That said, I always go up a full size in trail shoes, so I don't have to worry about my toes sliding down to hit the front of the shoe when running downhill. These are comfortable and the traction is fantastic. I never feel like I'm sliding on the trail, even when it's raining and muddy. These do a really good job of keeping my feet dry. Only once were my feet a bit damp after wearing these, but that was a very wet 6 miles in a downpour. I expect a bit of that moisture got in from the rain pounding down on top of the shoe (near the laces). These handle mud, puddles, and light precip with ease. Definitely recommend.

This is my first pair of Altras and I really like them. I usually wear an 8 but this fit better in a 7.5. It took a while to get used to the zero drop but now I find them very comfortable all day long. They keep my feet warm and dry, without overheating. I took out the standard insole and replaced it with a felted wool insole for the winter.

The Lone Peak RSM 4 is comfortable and roomy in the toes and feels secure. My feet never felt sore at all, even after 20 hour days. Best part about the shoes is the grip (on rock)--better than any other running shoe or hiking boot I've tried, and with the slimmer profile it can handle well on 4th class terrain. Ideal for off trail and scrambling in mountain environments, but also perfect for trail runs. Durability is not great--the coating around the toebox peels and punctures rather easily, but what does it matter? The shoe is not waterproof anyway. It has worked well for walking on snow/ice and running through mud, but forget about light rain. Nonetheless I ordered my second pair, this time half a size up for a slightly looser feel (my regular size also fits fine).

I recently transitioned to trail running after being devoted road runner for years. What I LOVE about the shoes: they are incredibly grippy on the mixed surfaces here which include grass, loose gravel, dirt or mud trails with nice flat rocks to slip on, both uphill and downhill. And they perform really well on all wet surfaces. What I HATE about the shoes: they do not keep my feet dry in the wet grass - my socks are soaked within 20 minutes. I've been running in Altras for years and my feet don't sweat like that in the road shoes or in other 'waterproof' shoes. Did I misunderstand what RSM really means? I can't see me wearing these in snow.

I keep hoping someone will stop me and ask about my news Altra Lone Peaks because I feel so clever for knowing enough to buy them. I have had food problems for years that curbed how much I could get out on the trail or just walk for a few miles on pavement. A podiatrist and a runner both told me about the problem caused for me from the tilted heal of almost all shoes and the runner got me into a pair of Altra's 3 years ago. At age 76 I was back on the trail and pathways with an energetic dog feeling like I could walk all day. I have orthotics that solves my arch support problem, the Zero Gravity plus the built in cushioning in the foot bed make for the best walking comfort I have ever enjoyed. The Torin Plush model has even more cushioning and these two are what wear most days. Be sure to read "FIT4HER -- Altra's women specific shoe design. I so want Altra to translate all of the good features into a few casual styles and keep the cushioning.

I found Hoka's very cushiony, but eventually too much like walking on marshmallows

I love these for walking in wet grass or puddles on trails, but not so much when it's raining since the water comes in the top of the shoe.

I happened into a shoe store while my feet were hurting from the show I was wearing. I asked the salesperson for a waterproof shoe. He brought out several pairs of shoes. I ended up buying these because, surprisingly, they felt pretty good. I'm very glad I bought them. I wear them to walk my dog, mostly on the sidewalk. I just bought a second pair to take on a trip to UK for when we go to view sacred stone circles . I wish they would make them in a solid black color as well, which would be less casual looking, so I wouldn't have to pack other shoes wear to go out.

Eh...still deciding. Good points- it is very lightweight, particularly for a waterproof shoe. I have wide feet so this shoe was attractive...but it's wide in the toe box more than the actual width of the shoe (side to side of my foot) so it feels a little weird when I walk..like it's too big at the end. I went down a half size (which I never do) and it's better though still a bit awkward and now feels slightly small on the width. I've tried the brand on a non-waterproof, different version and was true to size, felt great, etc. For waterproof it's the best I've found...

Very comfortable with good arch support. Unfortunately I will not be keeping them because they look huge on my feet. I’m only 5’3” and I wear a 9.5 in hiking shoes/boots so my feet are big to begin with. These, because of the very wide forefoot and odd shape just make me look like Bigfoot while wearing them. I tried these in the boot version in two colors to the same effect. I had hoped maybe the short version would look better but no, it did not. I’m really sorry to have to return these and the boots because they’re so comfortable but I just can’t wear them in public. Even my husband said they look awful on me. Thank you Zappos for your amazing return policy. I actually feel really bad because I ordered so many hiking shoes and I’m returning all of them for one reason or another. The search continues for a comfortable hiking shoe for me.

I bought these shoes on the advice of my physical therapist. I have pain in the ball of my foot that is worse in shoes that are too tight across the front/top of my foot. My size 8 Brooks had gotten too painful to wear. I purchased these in the grey/purple in a size 8 and just love them! Normally I need to have inserts in my shoes for arch support, but not with these. The interior sole is soft but supportive and very comfortable. The fit in the heel is good, not too snug, not loose. There is plenty of room across the width in the front, but I never feel like my foot is swimming around. My foot pain has definitely improved. The laces are nice and stay tied. As others have commented in their reviews, the shoes do make noise. I would liken it to the sound of a "muffled" flip-flop. It really doesn't bother me. I would definitely buy them again.

I have a pair of Altra road running shoes (Escalante 1.5) that I love, but wanted a trail shoe. In regular shoes I wear an 7.5 but my Escalantes are a 9, so I ordered both an 8.5 and 9 in the Lone Peak. The 9 was definitely a better fit, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near as wide as my Escalantes, and since I have really wide feet (E), the wider the better for me. The major issue, though, was that the waterproof RSM material that makes up the tops of the shoes was really stiff; so instead of bending and flexing with my foot, it would create sharp creases and then sort of snap back into position - super uncomfortable. I returned both sizes of the Lone Peak 4 Low RSM and ended up getting a pair of regular Lone Peak 4s. I really like them. I wore them in a 5K trail race after having only worn them one other time and had no issues. They are a little narrow, but wider than any other brand of shoe I tried.
