Sizing: I usually wear a 10 or 10.5, ordered 10 because some reviews said they were true to size or even ran large. But I knew immediately my toes would jam the end of the shoe on downhills. So I returned them for a 1/2 size up. The 10.5 is better, though the big toe of my 'bigger foot' might take a bit of beating on longer sessions, or lots of downhills. I'm not sure if I'd go up to an 11 though. The interesting thing about the fit is that the heel fits great (narrower than most hiking shoes), and there's so much room in the toebox for my feet to spread out in what feels like a very natural way. The arch support is at least average and as the description says, it is built for a longer arch common to women's feet (who knew?!) I like the zero rise heel (reminds me of the old Earth Shoes!) and it does seem to allow me to have a more natural stride, striking more mid-foot than on the back of my heels like other hiking shoes. I don't feel my (artificial) knee locking out like I do in higher heel rise shoes. Also you don't roll down into your toes with this design. But rather I feel I am naturally rolling to a push off from the ball of my foot and toes. Engaging way more of the muscles and tendons in my feet. I do feel quite stable in them - I often stumble in regular hiking shoes/boots. The entire shoe feels very soft, but my foot still feels supported. I've walked on pavement with comfort, soft trails, grassy trails, a bit rocky trails, and crushed rock trails and all have been much more comfortable than I would have thought. The sole is really amazing and grips everything comfortably. I was afraid I would feel sharp rocks through the soles, but no! The shoe seems to just sort of mold around whatever surface it encounters. The step feels cushiony without feeling mushy, like your favorite pillow. I've walked 5.5 miles in them, and was delighted that my step felt springy even in the last mile. In fact, I found myself really enjoying the feel of my foot on the path as I let my eyes feast on the green woodlands. The high cut hugs my ankle nicely without feeling bulky. They don't feel hot either! I'm looking for the shoe that I will take on a walking tour of The Cotswold district in England this summer. If this shoe can push me up into the mid teens in mileage they will be it! Other shoes leave my legs feeling heavy and my feet tired by about the 5th or 6th mile. I'm encouraged that these might do the trick, given how my legs and feet felt after today's 5.5 miler. I didn't want the waterproof version and am happy to read these dry quickly. I am expecting it could rain in England and even if it doesn't we could be walking through some morning dew and crossing streams. Fingers crossed!! I can't speak yet to how they wear. And I haven't tried them yet with my SuperFeet inserts. I rated down on Style because they do look pretty funky, especially the turquoise which is what I purchased. But it's not a fashion show so what do I care!

Holy cow! These are so comfortable! I had a pair of the 3.5 lone peaks (low), but could do not a lot of hiking in them because they were a bit sloshy on my feet. But these stay solidly put on my feet and still allow so much room for my toes. They are light, have good traction not he rocks and dry easily. Kudos!

I LOVE these shoes...Thank you Altra for keeping & improving this style...this year (& each going forward), I chose 1/2 size larger since I wear warm socks and need wiggle room...very good decision for comfort and care.

These shoes fit great right out of the box, and I wore them for a 6 mile hike with no issues. Unlike some of the other Altra models, these fit me true to size. I love the space for my toes to spread out. As others have mentioned, you will need to loosen the laces a little in order to pull the boots over your foot. When i first put them on, I wondered if the ankle padding would rub, but it did not. These are great shoes for hiking, as long as you aren't in extremely cold and wet conditions.

I've been searching for a wide hiking boot with a lot of cushion, (bunion, darn it!) and this one was the winner. I love Hokas, but their hiking boots are not wide enough for me. These don't have quite the amount of support and cushion as Hokas do, but they're really wide and pretty cushioned. I haven't hiked in them yet, so the test will be to see if they have enough support for 7 hours of hiking over rocks and such. I'm hopeful. If your feet aren't so wide as mine, Sportiva are awesome for support and cushion, and Hokaa are probably wide enough for many people.

Oh my gosh! I just got these and I think I am in love. I have pretty bad bunions and struggle with seams and tight fit in that area. Altras are wonderful for my feet in this regard. These boots are perfect across the toe box for me - no seam and a comfy fit. I can't wait to get out for my next hike!! I will say, as have some other reviewers, they do have a strong smell (not entirely unpleasant, just strong) when you open the box. I'm sure a few hours outside will take care of it. Also, they lace all the way up, so in order to get them on and off, they must be loosened significantly. Many hiking boots have the hooks for the top three lace positions which is easier, in my opinion.

I was satisfied with fit and support, but disappointed that these shoes did not have the waterproofing tops that my first pair of Altra shoes have. I live in a temperate rainforest and hike a lot. My feet get wet too easily so I have often had to rely on my old pair of Altras when it's wet and forego the needed ankle support this pair offers.

This shoe is hard to get in and off (and I have skinny feet) but once on, they feel amazing. If you love Birkenstock sandals... you will most likely find these as amazing as your favorite Birks.

Once I figured out what it was and how to use it, I liked the little strap that allows the boot to be tightened well over the instep. Before that I couldn't figure out why my foot wouldn't go into the boot! A change that would improve the boot greatly is hooks rather than leather tunnels for lacing--especially above the "little strap". I hate struggling to re-lace my shoes--yet with boots, the it's vital to be able to re-lace easily when going downhill.

Have hiked four of "the 46" already in these Altras and they are incredible. Almost like wearing slippers while hiking. They grip rocks especially well. No blisters or wearing-in phase. Highly recommend.

I really love this style hiking boots and zero drop. Thank you Altra for keeping them current. I ordered a half size larger in past year to accommodate socks, age, comfort...and am very pleased.

I was referred to the Altra Lone Peak by a customer service representative in footwear at REI. I am looking to replace my Hoka One One Tor Summit Mids to no avail. I need the mid height as I have stress fractures I need to protect and the comfort, padding, and support of the Tor Summit foot bed due to Dupuytren's. The foot bed on the Altra is very comfortable with an extra-wide toe box and extra support in the heel, which stabilized the heel and had no slippage. They are difficult to get into without unlacing quite a distance. I definitely prefer the Mesh version of this shoe as opposed to the material used in the RSM. Unfortunately, I had to immediately return for a larger size. I generally wear size 6.5, but I went with a 7 due to feedback stating they run small. My toes were still squeezed into the top. Next up, 7.5!

I love Altra Footwear and these go great with my tights. I find they aren't the best for hiking. Since I no longer run I can't say how they are on the road. More of all around everyday footwear for me. Fit is awesome with my orthotics and there is a good amount of toe room which is why Altra is the BEST.

Very comfortable right out of the box. These are lightweight but support ankles very well. The sturdy dole is great on rocky terrain. I like the extra room in the toebox. The only drawback is the insole, The insole, no arch support and not cushioned well.

I need the mid height as I have stress fractures I need to protect and the comfort, padding, and support of the Tor Summit foot bed due to Dupuytren's. The foot bed on the Altra is very comfortable with an extra-wide toe box and extra support in the heel, which stabilized the heel and prevented slippage. I wear a size 6.5; however, after reading feedback, I bumped up to a size 7 - my toes were still squished at the top - so I ordered in a 7.5. Although my toes were not rubbing the top, the entire top of the toe box had an inordinate amount of material remaining, and as I stepped, they bubbled and creased in odd ways. Although the heel felt stable, with so much extra area in the toe-box with no barrier, I slipped forward squishing toes again on a down slope. Also, I noted an area in the back, bottom of the heel that appeared to be peeling. It is actually velcro, and I realized it was a gaiter anchor for a strap to accommodate over the ankle gaiters sold separately. I have a feeling this velcro would be flapping in the breeze as I am a bit rough on my shoes in rocky areas. Overall, a very comfortable shoe, but not for me. I miss my Hoka One One Tor Summit Mids!

I have plantars fasciitis , and these shoes seemed to aggravate the condition. I was in quite a bit of pain after wearing them on a hike. They are super light weight and would probably dry very quickly, which is what I was looking for.

I was disappointed that there was no support in the shoe and it even felt flat footed. I wanted to like them because they fit but if I added a new inner sole they would not fit. Very disappointed.

It took me a few returns to get these in the perfect size for me, but I'm so glad I did! These are extremely comfortable. I wear them with a thin wool liner sock and thicker wool sock, so had to size up a bit (I normally wear 8 1/2 or 9 but 10s work for me in this boot). I wore these boots 3 times hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back and had not a single sore spot or blister. Love these boots!

I use this shoe for hiking/backpacking and love it!!! Every other pair of shoes has caused me to lose my toenails but with this shoe I can hike and hike and never get blisters and, best of all, my toenails don't fall off! I am trying to buy another pair but can't find them anywhere... will they still be making them???

I'm a 9.5 and I ordered a size 10. These are probably the comfiest boots I've ever worn. There wasn't ever an uncomfortable "breaking the shoe in" period. They've been super comfy since day 1. Also I love how they look. Very happy with this boot! :)

Best sneaker I have ever owned. I have bunions, and the wide toe box is absolutely perfect. Also a great tread. Grips really well. My only drawback is seasonal. Our winters are cold, and the thinness of the material over the foot is a bit thin for me. Cold goes right through. Would love a winter version.

I use this shoe all the time when I leave the house - granted that isn't often these days. I take a walk outside for 30 minutes most days. The front of the shoe is roomy enough for my spreading senior toes. I replaced the insoles with my special orthopedic insoles and my arches are fully supported and don't ache. The construction of the shoe gives me a smooth glide when I take a step. Maybe it's because my high arches were never fully supported before, but when I put my heel down the shoe takes over and rolls my foot forward without any effort. It's odd but very comfortable and my stride feels very stable. It like I'm not fighting the shoe to complete the step. The Peak 4 mid mesh is cool in the summer and allows air to flow in to my feet. That's not so good in sub-freezing weather. But I wear thick wool socks and get by OK. Maybe there's another style I should try. I'm so very happy that I found this shoe.

Love this trail shoe. Great ankle support. Toe box is not too wide. It is just right - perhaps my feet are wider than those who have commented that this Lone Peak 4 mid mesh was too wide for them. The only glitch is: This design seems to run just a tiny bit smaller than other Altra styles. I am not even ready to say that it is 1/2 size smaller - my toe is not all the way pushed up against the front, as I can place the tip of one finger in the heel. But, I certainly can use just a little bit extra space length wise. Tips: If you have options, perhaps you want to order both sizes (A lot of sizes are sold out already) . Thank you, Altra, for giving me another great pair of sneakers.
