Merrel makes great leather boots, but I was a bit bummed with these after the last pair of Merrels I had. Not only do they not make anything taller than this anymore, the calf area is huge! It makes me look like I'm wearing galoshes. Also I had to exchange for a half-size bigger which is strange that they changed their sizing since I bought my other pair 3 years ago. It may not be fair to compare, but that's my experience. These could be perfect for somebody who has thick calves. (I'm definitely not a small gal either, but these are just crazy wide) I will say clarify that I am keeping them just out of necessity of a waterproof boot for hiking around the woods. They may not be exactly the style I was hoping for, but they are durable and good quality.

Fit was narrow for me, squeezed the toes together a bit. I like a wider fitting shoe/boot in the toe box. Some Medium width shoes/boots work for me, some don't.

Every season I look for an update to the Merrell Plaza Peaks that were around in 2007 (which lasted me about 7 years and could be dressed up or down and never slipped in the rain, snow, or ice), and these ALMOST could have replaced them because the bottom of the shoe has a similar sleek design, but they aren't really that "tall" and didn't work in the way I was hoping that could be used to wear with business casual skirts/dresses as the Plaza Peaks used to. Fingers crossed next season they could up with something taller :)

I really liked these boots, but they were too big in the calf. So, unfortunately, I had to return them. They were very comfortable otherwise, and I was especially excited that they were waterproof without being so heavy looking. I am trying a pair of the Encore Kassie Mid Waterproof in the hope that they will work for me.

Oh how I wanted to love these! The style is exactly what I am looking for - casual boot with good support and no heel that is versatile enough to be worn with leggings, jeans, and even skirts and dresses. Bonus for being water proof! Merrell has been a solid go-to brand for comfort and durability (I have some Merrel hiking boots I still wear today that I bought new over 10 years ago). However, I am about 1 year out from foot reconstruction surgery on my left foot and these just did not have the support I needed in my ankle. I tried them on the night I got them and again the next morning, and although they felt great to just stand in them, my foot and ankle immediately hurt upon taking any steps. So sadly I had to return and the search will continue.

I usually wear a size 9. Because of the reviews I decided to order 8.5 and 9. I kept size 8.5. Perfect. The look very casual and comfortable.

I ordered these in an 8.5, since I work in retail and my feet have grown a half size in the last couple years. My hope was that they would be comfortable all day. After wearing them a couple times to work I feel they fit the bill. They are lightweight for a winter boot, comfy, and don’t make my feet too warm. Soles are flexible and seem to be pretty grippy. I walked in snow and on ice and they were indeed waterproof! So hard to find attractive boots that have waterproof leather so I am very happy with that. They are roomy though so I do have to wear thick socks to minimize heel slippage - this works fine for me since I wanted them for the coldest, snowiest days. But I still wonder if a half size down would have been better. They are quite wide in the shaft I have average calves and I can fit all of my fingers inside after zipping them up. I decided to work with that and fill in the space with boot toppers. They only come halfway up my calves and I’m 5’4”, so they really aren’t “tall”. They do lack a certain something when it comes to style, but since they are fairly neutral they will work for me. I wear them over skinny jeans, and did try them on with bootcut jeans, which looked a bit weird since the width of the boot pushes the “bell” of the jeans out even farther. So, best for skinny jeans and perhaps tights with leg warmers. They have removable insoles by the way. Overall they meet my needs to keep my feet dry, be lightweight, somewhat stylish, and comfy enough to be able to be worn standing all day.

This is a nice boot, easy to slip on and fits well around the foot, but the top of the boot is much too wide for my calf. I would consider these much wider than average. I must return these boots but will not stop loving Merrells!

My last pair of black Merrell boots looked so similar to these and I've worn them for the last 8 years. I loved the waterproof leather as I could wear them for recess duty without changing into winter boots on warmer winter days. I LOVED them. The zipper gave out last spring and I decided to get another pair. I was very disappointed that these are not as tall as my last pair, the calf is way too wide/sloppy (and I have wide calves) and the size 10 fit larger than the 10 I have in the previous pair. Sadly, these are going back. I'll be looking for another pair of taller. I am giving them a good rating, because the quality of Merrell boots is superb and they feel incredibly comfortable out of the box. They are even quite cute. It was more the fit I was unhappy with.

That these Encore Kassie Tall boots are waterproof with a grippy sole, a low heel, mid-calf height, and non-fussy styling made me sure that they would be perfect for me this winter. I have a narrow heel and wide toes, and these boots fit wonderfully in the foot, and the removeable footbed accommodates my Aetrex insoles. Unfortunately these boots are too wide in the calf, so I am sending them back.

Love these boots but they are not as high as I thought they would be. I am sorry to have to return such comfortable, well-made boots.

I’m a huge fan of Merrell boots. I have two different versions in brown and was looking for a black version. I wanted to love them but these just were not the quality of my other two pair. I wear an 8 in all shoes and these were about 1/2 size too small. The leather was nice and I’m sure they would be waterproof . I’m still on the hunt for a black pair of waterproof boots and I will keep looking to Merrell as my other two pair are extremely comfortable and a stylish alternative to rubber rain boots

Didn’t love these and am returning. Ordered them to replace the merrell captiva. Too wide in calf area and I even have larger calves! Footbed was snug on my wide foot too but loose in the heel. Trying some Keens next.

I really wanted to love these boots! I have a pair of waterproof Merrell boots that I bought in December 2005, which I really like, but they are starting to wear out. I was hoping these could replace them. I liked the darker brown color, which meant that the boot could be worn with tights and a dress/skirt without standing out too much as a snow boot. My previous Merrell boots are size 8 and fit beautifully. I ordered these in a size 8, and they were the right length, but there wasn't enough room above my toes (no wiggle room), and when I walked, my feet felt like they were sliding forward to the end of the shoe.

These were too tight; if I had exchanged them for 1/2 size up I think they would have been comfortable walking boots. However, I just couldn't get over how ugly they were in person. Zero style. I was looking for something that would look decent with jeans and a cute, casual top. These look like farming boots.

The fit is good and feels true to size. However they are very stiff....so upon breaking in a little the are rubbing my ankles where the creases formed...I hope they will soften up a bit but so far they are hurting me so I can't wear them very long...too bad....I was hoping for a more comfortable boot in this price range.

They were very wide in the calf on me. Otherwise they seemed comfortable. The leather seemed a little too easy to scratch as well but was soft so didn't cause any terrible rubbing. Sadly, due to the width of the calf, I'll be returning these.

These are kind of cute but on me they just felt clunky, stiff and ill-fitting (I tried two different sizes) -- rubbed against the back of my ankle and my foot slid around too much while walking. The circumference of these is larger than the norm for regular boots -- 15 inches -- but the top portion was still too tight for this fat-calved woman--my defect, not Merrell's! On the plus side, they appear to be very well-made and were easy to get on and off.

After 15 years, my merrell boots of a similar make died. I bought these w great expectations. The calf area was extra large, there is no ankle support, and the foot bed was uncomfortable. I returned these and tried a different style merrell boot and am very pleased. These felt like factory cut outs w no actual design.

I liked the style of this boot but when it arrived, it was so small that I could not get my foot in. I have several other Merrell shoes and have not had an issue with size before. in order to post a review, the site requires me to review comfort and style but since I couldn't get the boots on, my ratings for those areas are not actual.

The footbed felt fairly accurate in terms of size and width and I like the shank height and width which is great for larger calves. But, around the ankles this boot is super sloppy, with a lot of extra room, making them feel and look like a pair of galoshes. For the money, I want a little more structured boot that looks sharp with either dresses or slacks. These just didn't work for me.

I have these in the Mid height and love them so I thought these would be great as well, but the calf was so wide they did not look good on and I returned them. They are exceptionally comfortable, as I've found all Merrells to be.

While these boots are attractive, they are significantly wider in the shaft of the boot than the previous model of Merrells I own. They are so much wider, in fact, that I will be returning them. If worn with skinny jeans or tights, I have more than enough room to stick my big iphone into the boot shaft. This gaping causes them to look too sloppy unfortunately. They would be fabulous for someone with bigger calves, I am simply not built that way. Love that Zappos makes it easy when a shoe or boot simply doesn't work for me.

I’ve owned a pair of the old style Merrill boots for 5 years and loved them so much, I’ve worn them out. I bought these thinking they would be the same since they didn’t have the old style anymore. These were more bulky and looked more like Uggs on my feet. I’m not a fan of Uggs and I just couldn’t get past the look of them so I sent them back. They were just too casual for my needs. The comfort was great as usual, but the style not so much.
