My 6 year old loves these shoes. He has fairly wide feet and of all the shoes of this type (day hikers) that we tried on, these were the only ones that he didn't complain that his feet felt squished on the sides.
They've held up well to the typical abuse a kid puts their shoes through. I ended up replacing the shoelaces with bungee laces since he hasn't mastered tying his shoes yet.

they showed up in a search for waterproof hiking shoes, but upon closer inspection, they are not waterproof. Merrell makes a waterproof Moab 2.

Looks good, fits right, and feels good, but began to fall apart within weeks. Bad sewing around margins opened up holes at flex points. Laces unraveled promptly and needed replacement. Soles are beginning to separate. Not six weeks after receipt I have to buy a new pair of shoes: that's over a dollar a day for the privilege of wearing these (since he didn't wear them every day since purchase). OK, so these were worn by an active boy who walks, hikes trails, and skateboards, but from Merrell one expects better; his previous pair of Merrells, different model but subjected to the same activity regime, lasted nearly a year before he wore a hole in the sole (at which point he had crossed well over 500 miles in them). So maybe these would be great shoes for someone who just has to get from the front door to a minivan on the way to the next bout of screen time, but not for anyone who actually uses their feet.

These are a nice hiking shoe, though I'm confused about Merrell's sizing. We ordered a different style of Merrell in an 11 for my son, and they were about 2 sizes too big and didn't have the smaller size he would need. I decided to try this style, despite the lace-up design that my kid can't do by himself (don't love that). I ordered these in a 10.5, which I think is his actual size, and they were too small. We just received 11s in this shoe and I think it's just about right, but not much room to grow. I would order a full size larger than you think you need. So grateful for Zappos making it easy to exchange with free shipping. I love Merrell's quality (my kids are hard on shoes), but I'm not sure why there would be such a size discrepancy between styles!

my 5 yr old son has very wide feet, so we usually buy New Balance. We bought our first pair of Merrell's for a trip to iceland, which worked out, but he grew out of them very fast. They kept the waterfall spray off his socks. If you need truly waterproof hiking shoe, I would buy a boot if you know your kid will go in puddles. I reordered again in his current NB size and he could barely get his foot in. I would order 1-1.5 sizes larger.
I'd also recommend:

Very sturdy shoe. Well constructed. Merrell a seem to Run a little bit small, so we had to return and size up.

Our family has been wearing Merrell's for years. The smallest human in our family has SUPER wide feet, a ridiculously fat instep and Autism to boot. This combination makes it really hard to find him shoes. He has been wearing these shoes since he was 3 as these are one of the only shoes that he will wear.

These boots are so comfortable and are definitely made for the outdoors lifestyle. Took them hiking for miles, all weather experiences. It rained on us and also got extremely hot. These boots were made for this. These boots need dirt, rocks, water, mud, sand, concrete, grass, you name it!

Best all around hiker/shoe and great quality!! I have ordered many pairs of these Moab hikers over the years for my family and have never been disappointed. I've tried other hikers but these are, by far, the best I've ever put on my feet. We live in the mountains of Western Maine and a good all around shoe is necessary for living here. These shoes give great support, stability, and traction when walking or hiking outdoors. Well worth the money!

Bought these for my active 8 year old daughter for her first hiking shoes. She says they're comfortable and loves wearing them! They've done well on the Texas trails she's worn them on so far and we're hoping they will fare well in the Rockies this summer!

My 16 year old son really likes his new shoes. Merrells are great for people with sensory processing disorder necessary of their width and comfort. I know they are a nice looking, well made shoe and don't mind paying for their quality. Zappos pricing helps with that though.

My twelve-year-old picked this for more heavy hikes and outdoor camping. I like that the toe area is more protected. We added our own insole to provide more cushioning.

I'm a woman with smallish feet with bunions, so I need a very wide shoe. Big kid sizes seem to work best for me. Been wearing these shoes for a couple of weeks now to pick up groceries, walking during the day - very comfortable with good support.

Bought these shoes for my 6 year old grandson, and he loves them. Haven't had them long enough to test the durability, but the Merrell shoes we've purchased in the past have worn well. Also, my grandson has wider feet, so I bought the shoe in a wide size, and they fit great. Very happy with the purchase.
