Just like the title states it rained during my entire 18 mile run. I stayed totally dry. I did not find that the zipper leaked at all even though some reviewers have found that. This is the lightest and most breathable Gortex product that I have ever owned/used. Thanks to Arcteryx for creating this bad gnarly trail running jacket. It even looks good for wearing after a run to the local craft brewery...that is if you wash it occasionally.

This jacket is a great investment. It's so light yet so durable. It kept me dry and running on the days I would normally call it quits.

This thing is great. I use it all the time. Not just when running. Seems to be holding up well. I bought one for my son. He loves it.

I use this for running and mountain biking in the wet, cool (sometimes cold) weather of Victoria BC.
This is by far the best jacket I have worn for these sports.
I can't comment on durability since I have only used it for a month.
I can would bet that a crash on the mountain bike would shred the fabric easily. If that happens I'll go to MEC and paste on a patch. The risk of shredding the jacket out weights the benefit of being dry and enjoying my ride.
Not cheap but if you like to be dry and not sweat this is your jacket!

I sweat... a lot! This is seriously my favorite piece for any cardio-type activity. I actually like it better than my soft shell. It packs down so tiny I always take it on longer runs in the mtns, even if rain isn't in the forecast. Its saved me on some nicer days when i'd hit ridge lines when the wind was strong and cold. If I'm doing lower intensity exercise, this breaths enough that I don't build up any moisture underneath. In fact, I can even see it condensing on the outside! Mostly used for trail running this summer and fall, but I will probably use it for some quick winter ski tours where I'm not going to be wearing a pack or a spring tours where I don't expect to need a shell unless weather rolls in. I'd be hesitant to put much wear on the shoulders under a pack. IMO, the only thing that could make this even better is a small pocket or two. This would add a small amount of weight, but would be worth it to stuff some gloves in, or hat, or ipod, etc. I'm 6ft 3in, 220 and the xl fits me great. slim, but I can put a layer or two under it no problem. I think another great piece would be a combo of this material in low wear areas and slightly heavier areas in shoulders and such so it could be worn under a light pack. I love this jacket!

vivement qu'il y est un pantalon qui aille avec, en plus robuste (se serait la son seul point faible).
merci ARC'TERYX

This jacket changes all your preconceptions about what a fully waterproof jacket should be. The material is so light that it feels you are not wearing it yet you are fully protected from the elements.
Be aware that this cutting-edge lightness comes at the cost of durability and the cost means this is not exactly a disposable item.

Simply awesome.
The elastics in the arms works greate!
A small pocket for keys would have been nice, but usually other clothes have it so it's not really an issue.

Is waterproof really waterproof? Well this jacket certainly kept itself dry during the TDS one of the sister races in the UTMB. Yes you'll get a little moisture on the inside due to wearing a race pack but over all I was dry and warm throughout the night in torrential rain. I would highly recommend this Running jacket over the competition.

Arcteryx really nailed it with this one!
I live and train in the area that the NorVan is named after....we get more rain than almost anywhere else in North America; we have miles of undulating, technical trails that heat you up fast.
While staying perfectly dry might be an impossible task, keeping cold water at bay while feeling comfortable, is a must.
I started wearing this jacket in the early spring and it has been a constant companion whenever I head onto the trail.
The ability of the material to shed water is like none I have used before....water will bead off no matter how long you've been out in a torrential downpour. The fit is slightly slim, but the L fits my 6'-0" 185lb frame quite well (athletic build).
The material is very effective and packs down to a small ball...but it is a bit delicate. I would not use this for bush whacking or spring skiing....so be somewhat cautious.

This jacket is amazing. Incredibly light, super comfortable, looks great - works like a charm. I wouldn't bushwhack in it, but I was also pleasantly surprised at how nice and solid it actually does feel for the weight. Rad! Regarding sizing: I normally wear a medium in Arc'teryx gear - I have a medium Alpha AR, Squamish hoodie, Delta LT, Atom AR, etc. - but after reading the comments on this piece and the vanilla Norvan, I went for a large and I'm really glad I did. The large fits me beautifully. I'm 178cm and 82kg.

The Norvan SL lives up to its billing as the lightest gore tex jacket out there. It is almost laughable how light it is. I've run in it in solid rain and snow, and it is genuinely waterproof. Paired with a t-shirt or zip-t (like the Accelerator) it is also remarkably breathable, so much so that I'll forget I have it on after a 10K despite 1000' or more of elevation gain. Although marketed as a running piece, I have found it useful in other situations too. It makes a great emergency waterproof for hiking in the mountains, where even a bluebird day can turn ugly unexpectedly. It's so light and compact (complete with its own tiny stuff sack) that there's no excuse not to have it in the bottom of the pack. And unlike a windshirt that might get used in a similar scenario (eg. Patagonia Houdini) it is truly waterproof, not merely "water resistant". Obviously as just a single layer of fabric, it's not going to survive any bush whacking, but I've found it useful for trail-based hikes. Regarding sizing, I'm a lean athletic 6'4" and 175lb, and the large fits great, including my long arms. The hood has worked fine for me, but don't expect it to cinch down perfectly like a hard shell hood.

Large fits great on me. I'm 5'10" - 170lbs = 40in chest, 34in waist. Sleeve 32 in from back of neck to cuff.
Ran a Trail Race in the Rain and it did as advertised, the water beaded off no problem. I couldn't tell if it kept me dry as I was already wet from running in humid weather for 6 hrs at that point. I wasn't getting rain in though. It was quite breathable, but it was a humid day. It packs small and very light weight. I carried it in my Hydration pack without issues.
Seems like a very good product - but I've only had it for 2 weeks so far.

I am 186 cm, 75kg and bought the Norvan SL in M. the jacket fits perfect, and I would probably be able to put a thin mid layer underneath it. I use the jacket mainly for trail running and bike commuting and with a thin phase base layer it works fine in a temperature range from 0 - 15 degC. I have tested the Norvan SL in pouring rain lately and it did exactly what it claims it would do. It kept me completely dry and with every shake, all water droplets just bounced off. Truly amazing technology! I have used the jacket also with light running vests and packages, both of which dont do any harm to the fabric. However, I fell on a trail the other day and got a small 1 cm 'stretchmark', so one needs to be really careful with the jacket. In any case, I highly recommend this amazing peace of garmin to every runner in maritime climates.

If you combine this with super thin merino wool underwear you basically feel 100% dry with no added weight during a hard run even in a downpour.
I would love some matching pants/tights or shorts in this material!

This jacket is so perfect for running / hiking in the rain, it's almost unbelievable. I ran the Knee Knacker on July 9th, 2016 in "The Year of the Squall". The rain was coming down in sheets for hours.
I sweat an enormous amount when I run and this jacket didn't make me feel like I was wearing a garbage bag like most do. I didn't even feel it. I wore a t-shirt underneath and was warm and didn't ever have that "my jacket is soaked through" feeling. Especially on the arms as most light jackets you would have bought before always do.
This jacket never wet through, not even close. The beading ability is crazy good.
Simply put, this as good as they say and as good as you can get.
Sure the price is high, but do you want to be wet and cold? You don't. Do you want a jacket you can stuff into a bag without even thinking about the weight? You do.
100% recommended.

Like the other reviews already state; the Norvan SL is perfect for its intended use.
Very light, thus easy to take with you on longer runs were rain can be expected.
Just love this jacket, great waterproof protection but very breathable and comfortable, even on those warmer but rainy day's and on intensive runs. Best running jacket i've ever owned.

Nothing but the best from Arcteryx. I just completed my first 100 mile trail run yesterday. It rained on me, on and off for approximately 12 hours of the time I was running. At first I didn't put my Norvan SL jacket on for fear that I would over heat or that it would get clammy as the temperatures outside we're still somewhat moderate. At one point the rain picked up substantially and I put this jacket on thinking I would take it off once the rain eased. To my surprise it never came off for the rest of the race. I ended up running in the jacket for approximately eight hours. It held off the moisture with ease, and much to my surprise not once did I feel excess moisture vapor building up underneath the shell. The only moisture that came in was through the hood and cuffs when the rain was blowing directly into my face. Because this jacket has a very simple hood and cuff closures there are limits as to how tight you can cinch the jacket around those parts of your body. But what do you expect from a 4 ounce Gore-Tex jacket.
Despite this even when moisture came inside, the jacket did a great job of dissipating it quickly. Because this was a longer race I definitely wasn't running at full intensity and sweating like I might during shorter runs. It will be interesting to see how well the jacket does at dissipating moisture with higher intensity; but it easily exceeded my expectations and breathed better than any waterproof jacket I have tried to date. Like the other review said this jacket is perfect for what it is designed for and will be a staple on any runs where I expect moisture.
