I graduated from university 1.5 months ago and am currently packing up my hometown room to move to NYC. I just emptied out this backpack and I'm not embarrassed to say I got a bit emotional. For the past four years this backpack and a white baseball hat with my university's symbol on it followed me everywhere around campus and the world. Both possessions were beaten and battered but took it like a champ. If you're looking for a slim-profile backpack that can carry your laptop to class and (to the horror of your mother) the bare necessities for a winter break backpacking trip through Africa, look no further. My only regret is that I didn't order it in white so that the kids in my classes couldn't more clearly read its story.
A bit of advice as you start college:
1) major in what interests you. Google, Goldman, and McKinsey are looking for smart, passionate kids, and that does not necessitate an economics or finance major
2) Get involved in what interests you, not what you think will boost a resume. No one really cares about your involvement unless (maybe) you're the president, and I can promise you won't be named president unless you actually care about the organization. Any time you spend on an organization you don't care about would be much better spent on...
3) GPA GPA GPA GPA GPA GPA. Anyone who tells you it doesn't matter graduated from college 30 years ago or went down a career path you don't want to follow. Get a 4.0, or at least a 3.70, and understand your GPA will probably slip about 0.10 points from freshman to senior year
4) have fun, but try to take a long-term view on what you do for fun. Day drinking and bottle service are great, but after awhile it starts to feel like you're trying to fill a void with a black hole (trippy!). My favorite memories and most enjoyable moments were spent exploring the outdoors and traveling in S America, Africa, and the Middle East. Maybe that's not your cup of tea, but try to be more creative than frat parties;)

I've had this backpack for the past 3 years and it looks nice but it does not hold enough. When you put too much in it, it looks very bulky and feels heavy on your shoulders. One of my friends has the Borealis backpack which does not have this issue and she puts more things than me in my bag. I would recommend this for light use but not if you have too many textbooks.

I have bought several of these over the years for my children. They are grown now but still use them when traveling. This is a very durable backpack that can last for years. I don’t buy any other brand of backpack.

This backpack is the perfect size and has great features for a college student. The specially designed back panel and shoulder straps make it easy to carry textbooks around campus. The special laptop compartment and other compartments make it easy to organize your supplies and protect your tech. I bought this as a gift for my fiance as a back-to-school gift, and he never goes anywhere without it!

The backpack is great. I love how natural it feels. The comfort couldn't be higher. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a backpack for anything from hiking/mountain biking, to someone looking for a computer bag for their commute to work.

I bought this bag because I my previous book bag, of a much lower quality broke. I've been using the North Face Jester backpack for half a year and it has been absolutely perfect for classes, daily commuting, and traveling. It is multi purpose and serves as a great carry- on bag for short, low necessity trips. The only con of the is that it has slightly limited space. A simple fix to this issue would be to buy the Borealis backpack. But if you're a student, or just looking for a bag to hold a lot of your stuff for daily commutes, the North Face Jester back is a great option that doesn't break the bank either! ;)

This backpack has many pockets and is extremely durable. The straps are very comfortable and I love that there are pockets on the sides to hold my water bottles. The laptop pocket keeps my Mac safe and protected. 10/10 would recommend.

I use this back pack for my every day adventures. Whether it's a change of clothes, portable speakers, lightweight photo equipment, or binders and folders for work, the Jester handles it all. It's perfectly spacious and my favorite feature are the extra durable zippers. My professional camera bags have extra heavy duty zippers that you can always rely on, and that carries over to this bag as well.

Great-looking, lightweight, midsize backpack for occasional use. We bought it to use when we go off for day trips with the kids to carry snacks, rain jackets, water bottles, etc. Our other backpack had more space and pockets but was heavy and bulky. This looks like the perfect size!

Stylish, Rugged, Comfortable, and Affordable: These are words synonymous with the Jester backpack. I am a freshman college student at a campus where biking and walking are going to be a mode of transportation for EVERYONE regardless of whether they have a car. on top of that, intense heat and mighty rain is common in this neck of the woods. I knew i had to have a backpack capable of surviving the commute and the weight. The Jester backpack offers a 15" Laptop sleeve that can comfortably fit my 15.6" HP (16" might fit but that's pushing it.). The main pocket is roomy and allows for books, clothing, and pretty much anything you might need to fit comfortably. The second bag is a little smaller than expected but so neatly compartmentalized that I couldn't complain. The zippers are of excellent quality and are not prone to jamming. The straps are a little itchy on your neck but that can be fixed with some strap adjustment. The straps themselves are heavily padded which is particularly great for bike riders/pedestrians like myself that still have to enter a building and listen for almost an hour. The backplate of the back pack has heavy padding as well that seems to be strategically placed to increase comfort on the wearer. The best feature is definitely the lumbar pad that improves posture and molds seamlessly into the arch of your back. The neat chest clip amplifies this effect. The whole backpack has a very rugged feel that makes it clear how durable the pack is. I have gone to three pool parties with it so far and not one soaked-backpack story yet. Luckily, there is a maroon variant that matches my school colors (and most of my clothes) that warrants compliments and massive style points to any student. This is definitely the best backpack I have ever owned so far and I would recommend this backpack to any college student. For female students, a similar pack to this is the Borealis (also by The North Face) ((in case you don't like the colors/patterns on the jester))

I use my backpack everyday at school, it is the perfect size, easy to carry and doesn't get in the way. I take it with me when I travel or stay out it still looks brand new even though I use it everyday for all different things.

I had a jester backpack for 10 years and it held up tremendously!! Unfortunately, the lining started peeling a few months ago and would stick to everything. I brought it to the north face store, and they helped me send it in for warranty repairs/replacement. I didn't need my receipt or proof of purchase, it was so easy. Since I had bought my jester so many years ago, they didn't have the style/color combo to replace the backpack, so instead they sent me a gift card for the value of the backpack. So awesome!! After 10 years of owning this backpack and using it every day through high school, college, and now my job, this company still stands by their "lifetime warranty". I will never buy a backpack from anywhere else!!

I bought a Borealis backpack for my daughter about 5 years ago. It has lasted though 5 years of college. She takes it everywhere. She travels with the soccer team and uses as an overnight bag and carries her laptop in it. Still uses it to this day.
I bought a Jester for my 2nd daughter about 3 years ago. Same thing , used in college, carries laptop and loves it. 2nd daughter said the best thing she likes is the straps. They are nice and thick and don't hurt her back.
Onto child #3 , I just bought a Jester for my son who will be starting 10th grade in the Fall. Hopefully, he can make his last just as long.
All the backpacks are holding up well.

I originally bought this backpack for college because I knew I needed a durable pack back to lug all of my textbooks from class to class. I was surprised at how lightweight and comfortable the bag was and found myself using it for way more than just school. My backpack has gone with me on every adventure from flights across the US to hikes right here where I live.

I use this backpack everyday for college and I have to say it's the best backpack I have every bought. My older backpacks used to wear out quickly and become a burden on my back. This is the perfect product for someone who needs something comfortable for everyday use.

Bought the for college, and I looooove it! It's very roomy and comfortable, which is such a plus considering I have to walk miles across campus everyday wearing this. You could definitely use this as a camping backpack as well - it is a very versatile backpack.

I use this backpack for literally everything. I've used it for travel and it has so much room to it. I've also used it for bringing gear with me to an interview, hiking, work and for school. I love the laptop sleeve and how big the side pockets are to fit my hydro flask. Awsome backpack.

I wish I could give this bag more than 5 stars, the perfect college backpack. I have taken my mom and friends through the pocket tour of this bag - it is so practical but still really sleek and attractive. I really pack this bag full of stuff while I'm school and the straps and design make it comfortable no matter how full it is. I also plan to use it when I go on a bunch of long-haul flights over the summer and I'm excited for how organised my stuff will stay in my bag with all the handy pockets. I'm so obsessed with this bag that everyone I know is sick of hearing about it!

This thing is like another appendage to me, I never leave my dorm without it. It seems small but can actually hold quite a bit. I like it even more because it has a sleeker profile on the back instead of a large protrusion like most bags. The outside material is really durable and the straps are very sturdy, I beat it to hell on a daily basis and it takes it like a champ. There are a few cons I must say: The inner liner is not as strong as i hoped it would be, and feels cheap. The water bottle holsters are wack, as well, and can't accommodate larger bottles.
