Great casual/dress shoe! Would love to have another pair of Brown and a pair of Black. Do you know where I could find a store that might have in stock?

I absolutely love my Smith boots as a casual shoe, but don't recommend them for work or recreation. I have been wearing them for 2 years now and they continue to garner compliments wherever I go. They initially felt very stiff, but after some break in time the sole became less rigid and more comfortable for walking long distances and the uppers molded well to my feet. If you are looking for something with the fit and feel of running shoes, you will be disappointed in these. If you like boots but don't want something especially heavy and clunky like most work boots are, these are great. If you need non slip shoes for work, I would look elsewhere. While wearing these on a tile surface, I slipped and tore a ligament in my ankle. For reference, I've run and hiked several thousand miles of trails in the last few years with no ankle injuries. To surmise: Pros: Look great, super comfortable once broken in, durable. Cons: Have to be broken in, laces broke quickly, not the best traction.

After wearing them for a week, including casual but also speed walk & running I found out: 1. They did need some breaking in. First wear, the insole got taken out. But after a few more, stuck 'em back in - and to my surprise they were ok. Wearing them with thicker than usual socks helped, then backing off to regular thinner socks was quite comfortable. Paying attention to lacing helped - tighter when very active, looser for casual, especially the bottom lace because they are a bit tight across the top of the foot (with insole in). What I didn't do was soak them in the bathtub with my feet in them and wear them until dry. That's the best way to get them just right. But these didn't need it, may do that later though.. 2. What are they good for? a) Extreme comfort - and yes I've got the usual narrow heel and wide front foot. b) Casual. c) Working. Love the zero drop, love the wide toebox. Nice thing about leather - it stretches where needed. 4) Sizing? I usually buy size 10 shoes. I did buy a size 10 "Smith Boot". They fit better than most, once broken in which did not take more than 1/2 week or so with some miles of walk/run and general daily wear. The longer they were worn the better they got.. 3) Next steps? I ordered a second pair, one brown for casual, one black for working. Thanks, Altra.

Please don't discontinue! They aren't perfect, but they are close, and I mean that literally. Such a great shoe/boot. If more people knew that 'Altra Running' makes amazing lifestyle shoes like the Smith boot.... I think ppl would be knocking your door down.

I work in retail so I'm on my feet most all day, in Fitbit terms I'm 12 to 17K steps per day depending. I bought these boots on a whim from a local running store and they really paid off. They're wide on me so I wear thick socks and sometimes 2 pair of regular socks because I have sort of a narrow foot but not so narrow I buy narrow shoes in other brands. I don't like the two sock situation but they're so comfortable I deal with it. The only cons for me is that the toe box wrinkled not long after I got them but I dealt with it because the shoes were so comfortable. Also the shoe strings didn't last very long but that could of been my use. I love the shoes because she my day is over my feet feel great. Thanks for a great product.

I suspect that many of the negative reviews on this shoe are coming from people not used to wearing leather boots. They are not like running shoes - you do have to break them in. But, once you've given them time to conform to your feet (as you must do with any leather boot) they are comfortable in a way no other shoe is. Add in Altra's foot shaped toe box, and zero drop and you have 'out-on-the-town-shoe' magic. I have arthritis in my large toe and issues with plantar fasciitis, and I absolutely love these boots. Only tweak I'd make is a higher quality rubber sole and make it black. But, that gets them to 4.5 stars which rounds up to 5.

Fit and size is great and these are really nice looking for being barefoot. They're professional enough that my boyfriend can wear to work with chinos.

I bought these as an alternative to the Borne boots I have enjoyed but have come to question their durability. If you are looking for a wide boot alternative to these then look at Borne. As for these boots, I love them so much I bought a second pair in black. They are comfy, they look good, and go with most everything. It’s a full leather upper so if you think that’s gonna fit like or have as much give as a sneaker upper then you’ll be disappointed. They aren’t as roomy in the toe box as the Altra sneakers I have but they are still wide enough for my fat feet; and they aren’t a shoe for running in. I bought a half size up from my normal shoe but it’s about a half size down from my Altra running shoes.

These are some of the most comfortable chukka boots I’ve ever put on. The width of this brand is perfect for those struggling to find a naturally wide shoe. I needed a half size bigger as the first pair was too small. So size up on these bad boys.

First few days wore them to work and feet hurt. Realized I needed to lace them looser than other shoes and with break in I am very happy with them. I wear Lone Peak and Timp for up to 100 mile trail runs and it's great to have the same wide toe box and zero-drop in a shoe that looks great for the office. I have even hiked up to 5 miles and bucked hay bales in this shoe. Highly recommend, just give it a few days.

I absolutely love these boots. I'm so glad that Altra had the balls to make a boot. I am not a runner, so having the zero-drop and wide footbed design in a normal leather boot is fkcing excellent. As soon as I got these, i sold every pair of shoea I had. I would love to see them continue in this vein with a 6" or 8" boot out of this design. The chukka style is practical, casual, and refined ( a good way to enter this market), but if they made a taller boot, it would be the perfect. The leather has the perfect balance of strengh and softness. They are so easy to take off and on - which sounds like an arbitrary point, but it is isnt. My redwings required delacing half the shoe and relacing everytime I put them on. The footbed is excellent. Truly, i dont think there is another product like this. I really look forward to seeing Altra increase its offerings in the realm of simple, unassuming, non-athletic shoes. They absolutely killed it with these.

I have had these for a while now. Going on 9 months. I wear them to work normally 2 days a week. I stand for almost my entire shift on a concrete floor. I sell shoes for a living and I have no problems recommending these or any other Altra to my customers. These shoes are just great in every way. The cushioning is substantial enough to protect from the concrete floor. The heel of the boot is not cut in a way that doesn't dig into my foot or leg like most shoes in this style do. The laces and the upper work together really well to create a good fit at the top. And as usual the toe box has room for my toes to breath and the zero drop doesn't mess this my natural stride. I only with that they came in a black on black option. Pleased to see the Cayd does now.

I love these boots. I have been a fan of Altra running shoes for years now and when I needed a new pair of casual shoes I decided to give these a try. They did fit a bit too tight on the top of my foot initially, but after a week or so they were broken in and feel great. I like the way these boots look and feel. Even after being in them for 12+ hours they still feel comfortable. The only downside I can see right now is once summer hits down here in the south, I'm afraid they may be too hot. So Altra folks, if you read this, please come out with a version of these boots that feature a more breathable material.

Very happy with the first impression. I wear 10.5 in the Escalante, Superior and Timp. I downsized to 10.0 to wear these with dress socks and the fit is perfect. I have an average arch (not flat, not high arch) and I don't have any complaints about fit. Usual space for toes and nice mid-foot lockdown. The upper feels great and I am expecting it to only get better with a little break-in. I plan to wear these with jeans and business casual work clothes.

I switched to these shoes from my other work shoes (which were made by a very good footwear company that shall not be named) and my plantar fasciitis completely went away. I have loved these shoes. I work as a physical therapist and am on my feet all day, so it is important for me to be pain free and wear shoes I can rely on. These have done the trick. I have gotten a good, long life out of them as well. There aren't many good shoes out there like this that are also stylish enough to wear to work.

My Chiropractor recommendation for this shoe proved to be great for bunions and flat feet. It feels like that I'm walking barefoot. I've worn Mephisto's for years however, the Altra is half the price and by far the best walking shoe that I have ever worn.

This shoe is great, I purchased a pair of the Brown Smith Boots, I have been wearing them casually at work and out, I would not say it is a formal shoe. I was originally worried they would look a little goofy because of the wider toe box but they don't at all. I usually wear a size 9 in altra's but had to return them and go up to a 9.5, they were great on getting them exchanged. Overall the shoe fit is a little tighter and stiffer than the rest of the running shoes lines but that is because the material is different, so just be aware it's not a sneaker. Overall very happy, thank you.

I really dig these boots. Zero drop, flexible but substantial, room for human toes, good looking (though lose the white mid sole in the next gen!). I wear these with jeans, sometimes for a little yard work, and at school as a teacher. I could go for a run I them easily if I had to. I own three pair.

I typically hate wearing dress shoes because they're all so uncomfortable. Bought these and now look forward to wearing them. Great shoes for church special occasions. My feet sweat like a beast, so I don't wear them everyday. Not super breathable. But, they did keep my feet dry during a Mississippi flash flood... I was surprised to be standing in 3" deep water for 5 mins without penetration.

Was super excited for these to come out and they're living up to the hype. The first week or so, they were a little more snug than I would have liked - not a lot of vertical wiggle room for the toes. But walking around, they were incredibly comfortable. Took them on a two week vacation in Italy where I wore them every single day for hours of walking tours and they held up beautifully. That was enough time to get them broken in, too, so they're more comfortable now than when I first got them. As for the "clown shoe" look - it's really only noticeable looking straight down, and it only looks odd for the first day or so. Otherwise, they look like a nice, stylish pair of premium leather boots. Already got two of my friends to get a pair and they love them too.

Looks like a boot, feels like a running shoe. Not much more to say. I wear them to the office, but I have a more casual work environment. Had about a two-day break in period, but they are super comfortable now.
