i have used Solomon's shoe for years for trail running, and competitions. i am retired military so i just sorta got used to pain when running. i was at REI and the shoe person heard my complaints and recommended this shoe. i gave them a try for the weekend. i am completely blow away by the feel of these shoes. i have no pain when wearing them. i had a 3 day travel/run event in La over new years. No pain. i am finding myself wearing these now, in and around the house because my feet hurt after i take them off and walk barefoot. amazed went back before leaving la; for another pair of these so i know have two. probably going to get the tan boot for mexico travels after trying these. they feel like a medical device for pain; more then a shoe, light, bouncy, and fast.

The Altra Lone Peak series continues to improve with every new iteration. I was skeptical that the 3.5 could improve over the 3.0, of which I ran through 5 separate pairs of shoes this past year, but Altra came through with another great shoe. The toe box shape continues to be more streamlined then prior models, but still maintains the wide roomy toebox that wearers have come to love. The midsole fits snugly to the foot and the shoe does not slip during running down steep descents. The Altra Lone Peak is my go to ultra running shoe!!

Big props on the improvements to the Lone Peak 3.5's. I've been wearing the Lone Peak model since the 1.5's. I'd heard about problems switching from the 2.5's to the 3.0's so I stocked up on the 2.5's and finally ran out. I got my first pair of 3.5's and wore them in varied conditions this weekend. The improvements in the traction are remarkable. They performed 10x better than my old ones in snow, ice and mud. The fabric in the uppers is much better at keeping debris out. Of course it's cold so I appreciated less airiness. We'll see how I feel about that in the summer. As to fit, yes it's slightly more snug in the toes but it didn't bother me. I had to size up though. Thanks again for taking hiker concerns seriously and improving traction. This has been a major complaint about this shoe previously.

Shoe is a great fit, true to size. Comfortable fit throughout with nice room as expected in toe box. Just snug enough in mid foot which gives you a secure feeling without a claustrophobic feeling. The cushioning is just right for me. More like these please Altra!

I am an avid runner, both road and trail. I also have an addiction to golf. I know the Lone Peak is an awesome trail shoe but let me tell you.....this is the best golf shoe you can find. Perfect stability throughout the golf swing due to Zero drop and tons and tons of grip. I even use the Lone Peak Mid top for cold and/or wet days. Great golf shoe!!!!!!

My son has the and for his wide forefoot with a very high arch, they are great. Whether in the woods or as climbing approach shoes, it’s his best fit yet. He likes how the heel is supported and held in place. The sole is aggressive which is great on trail or rocks, but does drag more leaves and mud inside. Actually pretty cool looking for his taste I don’t feel as strongly but for black trail runners they look as good as most. Gaiter attachment looks very cool but as yet unused.

Finally tried Altra. Decided the best shoe was the Lone Peak 3.5 They have a great fit and are great on the trail! Plenty of cushion but very responsive!

Purchased this shoe as an experimental alternative to traditional backpacking boots that I've been wearing for the past twenty years. I had read many reviews by thru - hikers saying that they were wonderful. I just hiked three days in Colorado by the collegiate peaks and found I had no foot pain, blisters or hot spots. At the end of a long hike my feet simply felt tired, not beat up from being in a heavy compressed toe box from a traditional boot. That being said, I do not know how well they would hold up to weights over 30 lbs, since I
am set up for an ultralight load. It also took a little while to adjust to walking on rocky trails without the stiff ankle support I was used to. But I suffered no ankle rolling or injury from stepping on rocks. So I will be wearing these shoes from now on

Have been through LP's since 2.0, the 3.5 is much improved over the 3.0. Stitching as reinforcement around and over toe box vs. plastic(TPU on 3.0) is way more comfortable. New finer mesh fabric prevents small rocks and majority of dirt & dust from getting in shoe, huge upgrade over 3.0. Tongue is 1/2 as long (shortened) compared to 3.0 and cut/pattern of upper material fits my foot better now, less heel & foot slippage! Have had this pair of 3.5's since mid May, will get a few more because it has worked so well in the rocks of North AZ.
Excellent job Altra on getting back to what works!

I tend to choose trail runners as a backpacking shoe and these were recommended to me. I took them and did the 4-pass loop in Colorado this year.
Holy cow are they comfortable. I still wear them for work as well walking on concrete floors all day. The cushion is amazing and the shoes are still light and supportive.
Only downside is they run small. I usually wear an 11.5 and I have these in 12 and I still need to go up to 12.5...
I'd definitely buy my next shoe as these whenever these decide to wear out.
Finally, I usually go for a waterproof shoe, but the mesh up top is so light and breathable that your feet will actually dry out just hiking. I seriously like these shoes.

Size is so off that I don't think they should even call this Lone Peak. After 10 miles my toes started hurting to the point that I couldn't run anymore.. even walking hurt. I will not run in these shoes again. If you are reading this people at Altra, I basically burned away $120.00 + tax and shipping. Do they even test this shoe out for sizing? I've bought Lone Peak 3.0 and Timp and they fit fine. I've lost value with Altra.

While the show itself was amazingly comfortable and fit well (I ordered 1/2 size larger and it was perfect), it was wildly inadequate for hiking up mountains in the Adirondacks. I had been reading how many people prefer to hike in trail running shoes (like these) because they're more comfortable, but with all the rocks and on these trails my arches were arching within the first 20 minutes, with 7 hours of hiking to go. I rolled my ankle twice, and at the end of the day I was limping. And this was a relatively "easy" hike (Cascade/Porter mountains).
I would definitely recommend these for moderate elevation changes on packed dirt trails, but nothing more than that.

I've been wearing altras sinse all there was was the instinct, which I loved for the two reasons altra is best known for; width, and promotion of strong feet by taking away unneeded support. While the durability of the upper and the grip aren't bad, I found the LP3.5 to have too much arch, and be way to narrow. Hope altra can get back to their original geometry while keeping their added durability.

3 stars, because it's a sizing problem. The 3.0s's fit my foot perfectly, and I never had any problems hiking longs days. When the time came that I needed new ones, I couldn't find the 3.0' in my size and reluctantly purchased the 3.5's. Tried them on in the same size (13's), and my toes hit the front. Hiked a day in some 14's, and came away with sore achilles on both feet. No half sizes available. The shoes search begins!

Comfortable shoe for the cushioning, breathes well, and good grip on a variety of terrain. Easy break in period. Rock protection could be better in the sole and after only a 100 or so miles, the padding in the heel has started to bunch up at the bottom of the heel, which is aggravating to no end. I'm usually a 10.5 or 11 in US shoes, so was glad I tried them on in the store to find out a 12 was the correct length.

Glad I read reviews on the web before buying these as they did run a full size shorter. I bought a size up and still would like that extra 1/16 inch length but altra does not offer half sizes above 13. Some reviews said they run narrow compared to other Altras which is weird as I found these to feel like an E width with EE to EEE width in the toe box compared to many other trail runner manufacturers I have tried.
I am a typical D width size but my big toe splays out some so I typically have big toe issues with running/ athletic type shoes.
Heel slips up a little but not terrible and can make heel slide very slightly left to right, but again not terrible. Seems like sides of heel area bow outward more than other shoes.
Love the extra toe room and have been looking forward to using low drop shoes as I feel the higher drop shoes weaken my calves and bother my knees.
Pretty comfortable shoes and am trying to get used to the huge vertical forefoot volume. Also my feet can slide slightly side to side in the forefoot but not bad and again, I love the big toe room.
Noticed several quality control flaws. Upper white stiching did not match up well location wise comparing left and right shoe. Would also have preferred a gray, dark gray or black stitching.
Top backsection of one heel easily bent backwards. Should be firmer.
One heel was visibly crooked leaning to right from bottom to top.
Toe protection was pretty weak except where sole wrap at front was located. With such a high vertical volume open toe area, top of toe protection might work well too without affecting the toes.
Offering 13.5 and 14.5 sizes so people can fine tune their fit would be great.
My understanding is this is supposed to be a medium width shoe with wider toe area so make these more of a true medium width heel and mid with slightly more snug heel and a little better comfort mid foot like the Brooks, and improve size and quality consistency, and this shoe could be the best in the market.

I am an Altra fan. They eliminated my plantar fasciitis, so I've bought several pairs over the years. These fit as well as the others, providing the expected level support and smart space. But they have disappointed. I bought them for hiking and the soles could not be slipperier. My feet on level but wet surfaces have twice gone out from beneath me. I consider these shoes dangerous and would have returned them if I had not bought them moments before heading off to Alaska unaware that I'd be wearing slippery shoes in a wet place. Trusting Altra's dependability, I decided to take one pair of shoes on the trip, so have been wearing these for more than a week and they are beyond returnable condition. If not for the dangerous slipping, these shoes would have served the purposes--knocking around towns and in the woods and on rock hills--for which I bought them. If you purchase a pair, please beware on wet surfaces.

I really wanted to love these shoes. With moderate cushioning, my feet could still feel the trail, while being protected from rocks and pebbles. However, on a recent run, the midfoot cushioning suddenly gave out. Even with a rockplate inserted, I could feel every little rock and pebble. Very painful. Felt like I was walking barefoot back home. When they're in newish condition, they're great. But don't expect them to last > 200 miles.

I tried on a pair at a local store then saw this sale. I bought them here and when they arrived they fit a full size too small. I've heard this is an issue with Altra but didn't think it was true.

Well I've been a fan of altras for a couple of years, after really enjoying the comfort and cushion of their first two Olympus models. In fact, no other brand could come close to fitting my foot throughout and remaining comfortable throughout the day.
I'm here to tell you it's BAD NEWS for Altra fans. The newer models are built in a much more flimsy manner, and the Sizing is WAY OFF, the comfort is GONE GONE.
First off, if you are brave enough to give them a try anyways, go a FULL size and a half larger than your normal size.
I finally figured this out on the newer altras.
WARNING: that doesn't work.... the entire uppers are at least 3/4 inch smaller than the good old days, the ball of your foot will be pinched, as well as the entire mid section of your foot...cramped in both height and width....and the laces will be useless (too short).
Hopefully someone will read this review and save themselves a lot of wasted time, I have to go elsewhere for a comfortable running shoe, others have their own issues... New Balance are terrible these days, and brooks way overpriced. I'm not happy with all my time wasted.

Being an Altra wearer, 4 pairs of Superiors I was excited about the new Lone Peak 3.5. However after wearing 5 times in an offcie sitting, I noticed the inside heel padding starting to slip downward. It just seemed to get worse, so I contacted Zappos and they promptly refunded the pair and sent me another pair to try, no questions asked by Zappos But after the heel issue became worse in the defective pair and reading other Altra and Zappos reviews on this same model, I decided not to try them 2nd time. By far the worst Altra model yet and lacks quality workmanship. Maybe if it was made in USA it could be come a better model? Thanks Zappos for your great service and I have decided to purchase another company on a trail runner shoe. Maybe someday I will retry Altra.

This was the second pair of this shoe I've returned as defective. Both pair, size 14, developed a bunching of foam and fabric in the right heel cup that became uncomfortable with chaffing and blisters. I wore this pair for about a month before it occurred, the other pair took about a week. After a month of walking and light hiking this pair also showed signs of wear and tear in the fabric upper that makes me question the shoe's long term durability. Will not be trying these shoes again.
