Daily use to carry my work laptop, my iPad, and other essentials in place of a briefcase. Will also be used as a carry-on for travel. Lots of room for books, gear, clothing, tech

A present for my granddaughter who is a junior in college. A replacement for her previous North Face backpack of 7 years which is still serviceable but she needs more room. Great product and great company.

My last North Face pack, a Jester, withstood multiple cross-country backpacking trips, countless hiking excursions, and near everyday use for the better part of a decade. Naturally, that degree of quality encourages lifelong customers, so I naturally opted for another North Face pack when the occasion arose to choose a new bag that would double as a travel pack and day pack. The Surge, particularly this new, redesigned model, perfectly met my criteria. And how good-looking, to boot. Another classic. Thanks, North Face.

This backpack is a great one. My 15 year old got his when he was in 6th grade. he is now in 10th. He has an average of 25 lbs of books every year and it still looks great. My second son got his in 6th grade. He is in 8th now he did have a minor problem with the handle seems coming apart. I sent it back to Northface and they replaced it with no problems. I will always by the surge back back because it just works out great.

I bought this bag to replace a leather briefcase that had finally worn out after more than a decade of daily commutes and I couldn't be happier with it. It has well designed compartments for my laptop, phone, sunglasses, files, keys, both coffee mug/water bottle and plenty of room in the center compartment for my Bose 35 II headphones, lunch and if needed a coat/hat/umbrella. What I like best is that all of this can be comfortably slung over my shoulder leaving my hands free to open doors etc.

I have been using an older North Face 40L backpack for a while and it's still going good, but I needed one in emergency. I flipped through the list and found this. This has the perfect space for my laptop and table, lets me put in my books and accessories in it and the side pockets with buckles are a godsend. I read in reviews that his has trouble staying up straight on its own. I second that but with all the features I don't care. It's still one of the finest backpacks I own.

I use it to transport medicine, tablets, and documents. It is very well made. Awesome colors. I love the fact that it has small pockets also.

I love this backpack! I had a Surge II that I got in high school which lasted me the entirety of college (5 years) plus my two-year nursing program (10+ years). I had to order a new backpack after one of my compartment's zippers finally broke and was originally looking for something a little more stylish/compact, but no other backpack compares in terms of function. I have a ton of pens, binders, two different calculators, I like hand sanitizer/lotion in my bag, water bottle, laptop, pens, planner... Basically, I need a lot of space. This model has enough pockets for me to keep all of my stuff organized! The water bottle holder has improved since the Surge II to be deeper of a side pocket which is awesome for my HydroFlask 32 oz. (it used to fall out of the old pockets). I also love front Napoleon pockets, which is another huge reason why I chose to buy another North Face backpack. It makes storing keys, phone, earphones, wallet super easy... I love that this newer model has both a felt and a nylon inner pocket as well as the felt on the top pocket and the laptop sleeve. If you're looking for something to withstand daily wear for 10 years, get a North Face! They really do last, and are second to none. My only complaint about this backpack so far is I can't seem to get it to sit up straight with all of my binders and such. The part that touches your back is stiff for support/durability but it's a thin piece (think cardboard thickness) and so it has trouble balancing even when fully packed. Otherwise, I love it!

I actually received this new one as my old Surge started to rip at the shoulder straps and one of the zippers fell off. The North Face credited me with an e-gift card of the value of my old Surge. I bought this new one as a replacement. It is very new, so we'll have to see how the material holds up in the coming months/years. I use this backpack as an every day and travel pack. I carry around my laptop, Bible, pens, pencils, etc. everywhere I go. It's straps are nice and the backpack feels good on my back/shoulders. The front pockets do tend to be "lumpy" and fill up fast; however, I have not found this to be an issue. There is enough space for everything you need, but obviously, the more you have the heavier the pack will be.

This was purchased to upgrade a seven year old Surge that was beginning to show signs of wear. The newer model has better padding and is more comfortable than the older model (not that the older model was bad, the new one is just better). There are padded sleeve dividers in the "tech" compartment that allow you to securely carry a combination of multiple laptops or tablets without them touching one another. The only complaint I have is the lack of smaller compartments for separating small items like flash drives, medicine, eye drops, etc. It is a minor issue when comparing the new model to the older one and is more of a personal preference than a shortcoming with the design. Our company only trusts The North Face backpacks to protect our technicians computers due to the comfort and durability of their products. After seven years of daily use, my original pack is only now beginning to show signs of wear and is a testament to the quality of TNF.

This backpack has been a game changer for me. I have been through many backpacks over the past few years never quite finding myself satisfied with any until now. The separate laptop/tablet compartment on the back holds two devices and is super convenient and provides ample protection to devices stored in it. The large compartment could do with one or two zipper pockets on one of the large faces, but overall it is super convenient. Large enough for a trip or holding books for school or work! The nicest feature might be that when not filled it folds and rests slimly so as not to bulge and be a nuisance. The pencil and small pocket pouch is ideally located on top of the front of the backpack. Thus allowing for easy access for frequently retrieved items. The two front small pockets at the bottom are a bonus and can hold your cables and chargers and such.

I had the old surge and while it is being serviced for warranty decided to go ahead and get another one because I travel a lot and couldn't live with out my sturdy backpack. I really like the updated version - it is sleeker and has better pockets and compartments.

I bought this for my teenage son for school. I haven't seen him smile that much in awhile! He found a perfect pocket for everything - computer, water bottle, notebooks, phone etc. I even caught him taking pictures of the full backpack. He has had back problems carrying his heavy textbooks and computer around all day so I wanted a backpack that would distribute the weight properly and hold up for the next three years. I am very pleased.

Bag works great. The description says it will hole a 15 in monitor computer. It will fit a larger computer. Mine is a 22 in computer (15 in access) and fits perfectly.

Bought this for my daughter for school because her previous back pack would not hold all of her books and school supplies. This one doesn't appear to be bigger, but it is because it holds all of her stuff comfortably and with STYLE...I would highly recommend this backpack for any high school student that wants to look good while being able to hold lots of "stuff"!
