These fit the shoe-size that I normally wear. If anything they run a little big. While wearing the shoe; I can very easily slip my index-finger down behind my heel. I can do this in my other shoes, but in my other shoes it is more of a squeeze on my finger. The tongue is waterproofed in this new, 3.0-version. The sole of the shoe is flexible along its entire length, which I like. The only problem I am having is the stitching inside the shoe along the base of the tongue and along the sides of the tongue is uneven and bumpy and not padded, and presses upon the top of my foot in spots; especially where my foot flexes, and is uncomfortable; eventually painful in spots. The bumps are 1/4-inch high. The reason for this is outside the shoe; at the base of the laces; there is a hook attachment for a gaiter; and there is a thick leather overlay on top of the lace-holes. When these are all stitched together with the tongue; they create an uneven thickness, and the result is bumps inside the top of the shoe. Apparently the person at Altra who designed the shoe never tried them on, because this discomfort becomes apparent immediately when walking in the shoes. This inner stitching was not bumpy in the original 1.0-version of this Neo Polartec, because that version did not have a hook for a gaiter; you just hooked to the laces, also the laces went through loops, rather than holes; requiring a thinner reinforcement. This is the second pair I have tried; so it is not just a bad pair. I am sending them back for this reason alone. Altra needs to either put a pad inside the shoe over these bumps; or better yet, remove the gaiter hook at the base of the tongue and go back to the sewn-on loops for the laces rather than holes with thinner reinforcement, which will eliminate the bumps when attaching the tongue. Having bumps inside the shoe is a cardinal sin in shoe design. I know the guy who did this is the same guy who failed to waterproof the tongue in the original version. All he had to do was waterproof the tongue and not mess with anything else structurally. If ain't broke don't fix it. I own five different models of Altra shoes. I had high hopes for this model, but was disappointed again.

I have had these for several months. I hike/walk about 25 miles a week. plus-very comfortable but a bit bigger than my other Altra's in the same size. I put orthotics in them so helped a lot. Waterproof not so much. even with good outdoor research gators my feet got wet. The top of the shoe is starting to crack making them even less waterproof. A bit spendy for shoes that are starting to show wear already. The tread on bottom is surprisingly slippery on wet surfaces. I have slipped and fell on wet pavement twice.

This is my first pair of Altra shoes (I've been running for a few years in Adidas Terex series). If you have a wide foot or just love a wide toe box (like the fit of Keens, Olukai for example), these shoes are worth a try. Running over pounded dry fall leaves where you can't see the rocks underneath, these shoes have excellent grip. The thick light padded upper clinches down perfectly to give you better ankle position sense. These are not copy cat shoes. The company has a different theory about fit, as different from other shoes as vibram 5 toes are. I'm a believer.

Lone Peak 3 Mid – These are great shoes. I’ve waited a long time for an off-road, high-top Altra. A bit of history: I first ditched hiking boots for running shoes a few years back. My legs have been very pleased with the decision. It’s the Lone Peaks that have filled the bill for me nicely …and the new high-tops are a welcomed addition. They are way lighter than any pair of light-weight hiking boots that I have owned. Granted, they are not going to offer the ankle support of a heavy-duty pair of leather clod-hoppers. So, just watch where you step. (That has other benefits, as well.) Waterproofing: If a choice were offered I would have skipped the water proofing and opted for more breathability. That mentioned, they do breathe well for a waterproof (resistant?) boot …or shoe. I believe that comes from the approach Altra uses for waterproofing which is different from the norm. (Waterproofing is handy I suppose if you are the first one down a frosty grass-laden trail.) For sizing …the Lone Peak Mid fits the same as my original Lone Peaks - I go a full size larger than my regular shoe size. Comfort? Mine lack the “1/4 inch bumps” mentioned in another review. (I’m still trying to determine if I got ripped off.) They actually are quite comfortable on the trail. On hard surfaces, however, the feel of the off-road traction-treads transfers up through the soles to my tender feet; this is not a show-stopper, though. (To put it in proper perspective, I have a hard time walking barefoot across carpet.) Zero Drop: For those new to Altra, Zero Drop means that the front of your foot is on the same plane as your heel. As I noted in another review, zero drop is not for everyone …including me. I slip a pair of Dr. Scholl’s P.R.O. ¾ length heel pads under the removable footbeds. They provide about 5mm heel lift. Perfect. Gaiter-Traps: This outstanding feature is on all Lone Peaks. It allows gaiters to be attached without passing a strap under the shoe. Gaiters keep little annoying pebbles out of the shoes. I use gaiters from Dirty Girl. (Yes, I swear …there really is a company called Dirty Girl and they make really good, light-weight gaiters that fit PERFECTLY on the Lone Peaks.) Then finally, there’s the feature that makes an Altra, an Altra …and that’s the wide toe-box. It’s nothing short of God sent. I have a few miles on these shoes, now. All-n-all, I like the new hi-tops and I’m glad Altra finally came through with them. Oh, and Zappos? …nobody, no way, no how beats Zappos!

I'm obsessed with the normal Lone Peaks so I had to give these a try for my longer day hikes. I personally wouldn't wear these shoes for running, because I have the normal version for that, but for long hikes, these are exactly what I was hoping for. They have the same great fit and comfort, are lighter than all hiking boots and are flexible without sacrificing the stability that everyone looks for in a hiking shoe. I love the waterproofing, but I wish they also had a version without Polartec. I guess that'll be my next Altra shoe!

I bought these for hiking and backpacking. They have the wide toe box and zero drop characteristics common to all Altras. They're wonderfully light, but of course not as supportive as a full-on hiking book. I beg to differ with the reviewer who said these breathe well for a waterproof boot. I've worn these on a few ten-mile hikes in moderate temperatures (40s-70s). After each hike, my socks have been soaked with sweat and a "puddle" of sweat has collected on the bottom of the perforated insole. I've never had this problem with my waterproof (and much heavier) Vasque Breeze 2s.

I've just bought my 3rd pair and have to say these shoes are awesome. I've been through soggy trails in the Pacific NW and up and down rocky volcanic trails in S Nevada. The durable toe cap and the built-in rock shield provide great protection against sharp rocks, sticks, and stubs. The mid height keeps the foot from sliding to the front of the shoe on descents. I like the firm feel of the footbed and the confidence it inspires; no vague and springy feeling here (unlike the LP4 mid). The neo shell keeps the dust and grit out and my socks and feet clean, and the shoe wipes clean with a damp cloth. There is no "toe ramp" at the front of the shoe, so your toes actually get to do their job of pulling and pushing instead of just falling over the miniature built-in cliff on toe-off. And I don't miss the trail rudder either. Maybe 1 more pair before they run out of my size...

I have now owned these shoes for over a year and have put many walking miles on them through mud/grass/snow. They have been comfortable from the start and keep my feet warm and dry when out walking the dogs on the trails or in the snow. I plan on doing a 10 day hike in Philmont with my son next year and will be buying another pair of these for the trip. The traction is great and they seem to shed the mud and snow pretty well. It's like a 4 wheel drive running shoe.

These are the most comfortable hiking boots I've owned -- they performed brilliantly on a 3 day trek of the Bigelow Range in Maine. The wide toe box is what sets them apart, as my pinkie toe often gets scrunched in other hiking boots. My only complaint is that the style is a bit garish, but that quickly becomes less of an issue when they're covered with mud.

This brand is great for folks with wide, flat feet and wide toe boxes. I buy these shoes for my husband because they fit him really comfortably. He even wore these to Disneyworld and walked all day.

Big fan of the Hiit xt, wear them everywhere but needed something warmer and dryer for the cold days. Unlike some reviews these have kept my feet dry on cold frosty, wet mornings. So far so good. I Recommend if you're an outdoors kinda person. I haven't run more than 2 miles in these so far and not too clunky and no blisters yet. Great play shoe for wet, muddy or cold conditions. Just wish they were a little less pricey....if they hold up as well as my Hiit xt's have they will be worth it. Owned for 4 months.

I am a big fan of the normal Lone Peaks for ultra running, but wanted to try out the mid to use as mountaineering approach shoes so I had some ankle support for heavy pack. They are the perfect shoe for this use; good support for pack, excellent traction on technical rock. Now I feel like I can crush any approach, no matter how long or bushy :) I did some experiments with these shoes I want to share. Experiment 1 - durability: My buddy and I took brand new shoes out for a burly scramble trip in N. Cascades to test durability. I took Lone Peaks my buddy took Asics. On day 3 the Lone peaks were dirty but still looked new, but the Asics were totally trashed (sole flapping off, rips in the upper). This is what I love about Altras, as durable as you can get without wearing an actual boot Experiment 2 - waterproof: I was curious how well the NeoShell would work in snow, so did an all day snow climb with Lone Peaks + snow gaiters. The NeoShell kept waterproof for ~3 hours, then started soaking thru. I think this is as best as you can expect from these lightweight shells My only critique is that the mid is awkward to put on. Really have to yank on the heel flap and hard to do sitting in a tent! Thanks Altra for designing superior product to allow us to crush it

Having worn both the Teva Links for MTB and the Teva eVent Mids - no longer available! I was fortunate to buy a pair through Amazon UK. Unfortunately they finally gave out. After searching for a quality boot I found a great replacement namely, Altria Lone Peak 3 Mid Neoshell from Zappos. Excellent fit, extremely lightweight, great looking. No doubt this boot will be my go to from now on.

I am a long-time fan of Altra running shoes, having owned 10+ pair over the last five years. In fact, Altra is the only shoe that I wear 95% of the time...24/7/365. About the only time I wear something else is to weddings and funerals. I started with the Instinct 1.5 and loved it; this was shortly after having torn my right plantar fascia when "heading for home" on opening day of our local Senior Softball league while wearing traditional cleats...could barely walk and not run at all for three months after. The zero drop and wide toe box of the Instinct were great during rehab...I especially liked the fact that I had good, solid contact across the full breadth of my foot with the ground. As an interesting aside, I have suffered zero...0...ankle sprains since then as well, because the foot/ankle are not forced into an unnatural position caused by traditional running shoes with built-up heel stacks. I briefly tried the Torin but didn't like it. Then I experimented with the Lone Peak 1.5 for use on the ball diamond and found that it performed beyond my expectations, both infield/outfield and running the bases. I have worn the Lone Peak 24/7 almost exclusively since then...though I did try the Mountain King once...and am now in the Timp which pretty much feels like a cushier version of the Lone Peak. With the Timp, I actually forgot to replace the OEM inserts with my pricey custom orthotics for the first month, including going on several local hikes of 5.5 miles with a 1700 foot gain and 35 lbs. pack...no foot, leg, or back discomfort at all! This particular hike gets pretty messy during the rainy season (and when isn't it rainy in Seattle), and so I decided to try the Altra Lone Peak 3.0 Mid Neo as a hybrid hiking shoe...again, big success. The LP Mid Neo is stiffer on top and bottom than the traditional LP, and it handles the slog up messy trails better than my old Lone Peaks or current Timps. The outer shell is stiffer as well, so it resists road rash a little better, and is supposed to offer some waterproofing protection. I've not immersed them in water yet, but my guess is they are more water-resistant than waterproof. All in all, they are the perfect light-weight hybrid option to heavier, clunkier hiking shoes. The lighter weight and greater flexibility allow me to use a skip-step or gallop when descending, making it easier on the knees. When using this technique, keep in mind to use your back or "drag leg" as a break, keep your toes up so as not to snag on roots or rocks, and always keep your pace or rate of descent under control. If comfortable with the technique, your knees will thank you come 10, 20, 30, or 40 years from now.

Having had high arches all my life I have sustained chronic trauma to my meta-tarsal joints on both feet. The Altra Peak 3.0 roomy toe box and Zero Drop evenly distributes weight and force throughout my feet and away from the balls of the feet. I have used them continuously for over a month now with frequent walks in the snow here in West Yellowstone, Montana. So far they have proven dry, durable, and sure-footed. I can not comment on running aspects since I no longer do so. The 5 star rating is given as a walking shoe.

I'm 100 happy miles into my second pair of low-top LP 3.0s, and decided to get a pair of Neoshell high-tops for winter. I'm 80% hiker, 20% slow runner. 30 miles a week. 65 years old. Anyway, after just 2 days, 10.4 miles, I love these shoes. Much more stable on the rough trails I hike/run in western Colorado than the low-top. Not sure if it's the high-top, the Neoshell (the Neoshell does seem to add stiffness in the upper), or a combination of the two, but this shoe keeps my foot centered on the footbed far better on sidehills. Much warmer too. My 5-miler this morning was at 23 F, and my toes were toasty.

I spent 30 consecutive days hiking and scrambling in the Canadian Rockies. It was not only going to be a test of endurance for me but also for the footwear I chose. I normally would have had problems with shin splints and my knees, given what I was doing. It was the best decision I could have made because my legs just got stronger every day with no injuries at all. First time ever! I'm sold.

I literally cannot have any complaints of this boot! Just hiked 9 miles on mount Elbert THE DAY I got them! No breaking in whatsoever. Toe box allowed no blisters because of better distribution and the zero drop gives you a better mid to front strike. Grip is great and toe box gives you better balance. At the end of the hike I stepped in two to three inches of water to clean them off and was totally water proof. Tennis shoes are next!

These are a bit heavy and bulky for straight trail running(keep in mind for a mid hiking boot they are insanely lite) but are great for long days of steep climbing and rough terrain when you want to keep moving fast. Super comfy right out of the box. They are just as water resistant as advertised. As far as I've experienced, if you getting your feet wet for prolonged periods nothing is going to stop the water from getting in eventually. These hold up just fine, and they dry very quick. I'll stick to my superiors for straight runs, but these are best all around hiking boots I've come across. Well done.

I took these as a backup to the Bataan Memorial Death March in March of 2017. SO GLAD I DID! We were in the heavy category(35lb pack) and these boots performed beyond what I previously thought possible for my feet. NO BLISTERS! Not even a hot-spot. Temps were in the low 90's when we finished and my feet felt like I had another 10 miles easy! I can't say enough about these boots. I am in Montana and I am eagerly awaiting hiking in all of the wilderness areas in these boots!!!

Took the boots on a 5 mile hike at a local state forest. It was a wet hike with a light mist all morning. They are super comfortable right out of the box. No break in needed. The trail was wet and muddy, great traction on the hills. Feet stayed dry too. Loved that they don't have the "high heel feel" that other hiking boots have. So I highly recommend them!! Best part is the no break in period needed!
