I used this backpack this summer while backpacking through Europe. This was the only bag that I brought with me and I do not pack light, but this bag gave me ample room for everything I needed during those three weeks. I was able to carry this on for my flight out of Chicago, and on all of my international flights from Dublin, to London, to Italy, and Sweden. This backpack had great back support, and I loved the detachable day-pack. Would definitely recommend this item to anyone!

I don't usually write comments/reviews, but I couldn't not tell the world how I LOVE my Fairpoint 55. I bought it more than 2 years ago when I've decided to embrace uncertainty and see where the wind would take me - and for how long. Over the past 2.5 years, I have backpacked through SE Asia, traveled to work conferences in Europe, weddings in Germany and South Africa (meaning: fancy clothes packed), conducted field work in Africa, and lived in urban centers like Sao Paulo. And this backpack has been the best packing companion in all of these situations. It's light, it's the size of a carry on, it's resistant. It's just perfect! The only challenge is to keep the weight down so to have it as a carry on, because if you organize your things well, it can fit quite a lot (17 kilos was my personal record - not that someone that likes to travel light would be proud of it, but still impressive). To be fair, and not all loving about it, I do think that the daily pack could use some improvement. I had an issue with the connecting zipper and had the daily pack exchanged by Osprey; they gave me an earlier version of it and I really missed the cushioned computer pocket (I guess they wanted to make it lighter... but it doesn't really help if instead you need a thicker computer case) and the key chain link in the front pocket. Also, the inside pocket is kind of useless as it "blocks" you from getting the things at the bottom. Anyway, if in doubt, go for it! It is indeed one of, if not THE, best backpacks out there.

I'm returning this one, but not because I don't love it. This backpack took my son through his post-grad trip in Europe in fine style; he carried it on airplanes, used the daypack, and then took it off to college. I thought the same one would work for me, but it is just not right for my needs. I need the wheels and I don't need the day pack attached. But this is a great piece of equipment.

I have used this bag on 3 medical mission trips and it has been flawless. The material is extremely durable and the backpack is comfortable in the airport. The ability to hide the straps comes in handy for carry on or checking the bag. The ability to separate the bags and reattached them in under a minute saves so much time and is very convenient. The main attraction to the bag is that it is carry-on compliant in the US. I tend to use the smaller bag as my personal item and day pack and have the main bag as a duffle once I get to my gate. The versatility to leave your main bag at the hotel and just go explore or do work with the smaller bag works amazingly well. I tend to carabiner my water bottle to the personal bag inside the water bottle sleeve cause it is tight. Overall this bag excels in the airport and once you reach your destination the personal bag attached is all you need for your day to day travel.

I think this pack is the ideal travel backpacking pack. You get a large main pack, with lots of storage space and an easy to access front zip (like a traditional piece of luggage). The main pack also has strap covers so no conveyor belt rips them off, outside strapping for gear, and internal compression straps to keep everything tidy and compact. The day pack is perfectly sized for everything you need. I often had a laptop, camera and gear, water, snacks, and misc. gear in it and had plenty of room left over. The daypack also attaches to the back or front, allowing you to distribute weight and carry the pack more comfortably. I've currently done over 9mo+ of travel with this pack and plan to do years more.

I initially bought this pack for a month long trip to Africa with overnight stops in Istanbul for a friends wedding. After an overkill of research, I went with this pack because it's size fit within enough airline carry-on sizes in length, width, and weight on its own and I was able to max it out with no trouble at the airports thus far in the US, South Africa, or Turkey. I use the smaller pack as carryon personal item and the larger gets stowed away in the upper cabinets. Knowing I'd be staying in multiple locations throughout the trip, but also needing to bring along formal heels, multiple dresses for wedding events but also gear for exploring and other normal things I'd need for the trip, I wanted a pack that can give me the space of a black hole without structured poles or bars holding me back from (always) overpacking- but assist me in keeping things orderly and accessible. This pack was amazing at achieving this! I hate packs with tons of straps hanging all over the place and this was as minimal as I could get while still including an adjustable hip belt. The hip belt adjusted super nicely and that was also important because my husband carried it sometimes and he's 6'5.5 and I'm 5'4 and we were both really impressed with how we could carry it with ease. The daypack is something I use close to every single day at this point. It's the perfect size for everyday use and is also very comfortable to carry. It's more substantial then some "breakaway day packs" other brands offer and there is ample space to stay organized within the multi pockets inside. Would buy this pack over and over again.

Most of the reviews have been positive and I agree that this is a great bag for travel. The greatest selling point of this bag is the detachable daypack. Once you arrive at your destination, the main pack can be left somewhere and the daypack can be used when exploring a city. Separating the main pack and the daypack is also great when flying in Asia where passengers are allowed to carry two carry on items - a bag and a personal item. By splitting the two bags, you may be able to bypass the carry on size restrictions. A few things that I think that could be better with this bag. While the large pack's straps are thick, I find that walking around for a few hours with just 10kg of weight quickly becomes uncomfortable. While I also use compression bags, the main pack and day pack could use a few more built-in compartments. Lastly, something that annoys me (it may just be my bag), but the zipper to re-attach the day pack to the main pack often gets stuck when trying to attach the two bags, and I often need to spend a few minutes trying to get the zipper to work. Something that would be great is if the main pack had an additional zipper to compress the size of the bag. Even when I pack the bag to half capacity and use the straps to tie down the daypack and the main pack, the bag looks really bulk. Another thing that would be useful is to be able to attach a shoulder strap to the main pack to carry it as a duffel. From my experience, this would be useful at airports.

I bought this pack 4 years ago for a 5-week trip across Europe. It was the best bag I could have asked for, super functional holding everything I needed (with packing cubes) and easy to bring along on the plane, trains, etc. The day pack isn't the best (needs larger exterior pockets!) but it was functional for my needs. Since then, I've used it for week-long camping trips and 10+ day vacations- I haven't used a regular suitcase since purchasing it! The ability to zip away the straps and use the side handle is extremely convenient, i just wish there were more exterior pockets. If the daypack is attached and both are full, it's a bit top heavy and awkward looking, but this can be fixed by either NOT stuffing the bag to capacity, or strapping the day pack in front, so overall it wasn't an issue. LOVE this bag, and will hopefully use it for years to come :)

Spent 38 days on the road in Europe with this bag traveling by car, train, uber, ship and air. Great bag. Made the mistake of loaning it to my wife. She fell in love with it. Will be buying another.

Positives: I'm always nervous at check-in. but thus far, every airline I've rode on has accepted the bag as check in--WOW air(france to iceland), Asiana(philippines to usa) , Philippine Airlines (philippines to usa), Cebu Pacific (manila to cebu), Norwegian (iceland to madrid). However, i always separate the 2 bags and try not to fill the main bag to its limit! The mini backpack does its job well-- a bit of a tight fit, but it was able to carry my sony a6, dji spark case, water bottle, and a puffy jacket, i climbed all the way to the top of mont sainte michel without any problems! Negatives: maybe it's just the way I pack my stuff, but after a while, the main bag straps started digging into my shoulders...

I traveled to 13 countries on trips ranging from 3 to 12 days using this bag and have no complaints. I packed it wayyy too full many times, but the zippers held up and the back support was sufficient for me (130 pound female) to carry it for miles with little discomfort. I was nervous about budget airlines with their strict carry on rules, but was able to carry this pack on (with the day pack zipped off and taken as my second item) on Vueling, RyanAir, EasyJet, and Belgian Air. The zip off daypack (which has a laptop compartment, though unpadded) was a lifesaver. This is the easiest bag to pack and live out of in hostel/hotel situations. Highly recommend for air travel and light to medium hiking days. The only thing I'd change would be to add pockets to the hip belt so you can pull out money/tickets/phone without taking the whole pack off.

My wife and I read hundreds of reviews on many different brands before settling on this pack. After trips to France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and even a trip home for thanksgiving, we can't recommend this bag enough. Its perfect. The separable day pack is great for excursions or a plane carry on. The build quality is obvious. One thing that is not noted, is that this pack is easily lockable with 1 single TSA approved lock that can be hidden easily. The only way someone could get into this pack while we are on the train is by slashing it open. We love this pack. it was our first Osprey purchase and we are hooked.

Purchased this bag (and 3 other Osprey bags for the rest of the family) for a week+ trip to Ireland. Bag fit airline carryon and packed fantastic. Compression straps (on the bag) and packing cubes did wonders. Fit a weeks worth of clothes (I'm a 6'4" guy so clothes are big). Everything fit great and was easy to access. Bag stood up to banging, dropping, and tossing around with no signs of wear. Love my Osprey bags and will be buying a backpack hiking bag soon.

Bought two of these 2 years ago for a trip to Ireland. My husband and I carried everything we needed for 10 days with two small children (including diapers!) and still had room to spare! We have since used them for air travel, car camping, and a host of day adventures. Favorite features- detachable daypack, full zipper (so easy to pack!), and the ability to hide the harness for flying. When flying we always carry-on and have never had any issue. The best part is being hands free to handle papers (boarding passes, maps, etc.) and hold our children's hands as we maneuver through airports or traffic. I'm actually eager for our girls to be old enough to have their own. Fantastic bag Osprey!

this has been my main go to bag for the past 2 years. and it fits all my needs. i've taken it to europe 3 times in the past 2 years for extended time and soon to be a 4th time. you dont have to check this bag on flights. it fits in all over head compartments domestic or international flights.the only planes this bag wont fit on is the little small crop dusters lol. daypack that comes with the bag is deceptively spacious. when walking europe it can store hat, gloves, jacket, camera, water bottle and its still have room. if your a minimalist then this bag is for you. for a 2 week trip to europe i use this bag and the daypack. versatility of changing it from a backpack to a duffle bag is really quick. and you can use the area where straps are located on the bag as additional storage for jacket before boarding the plane. hopes this helps and happy traveling

So after a lot of research I bought this bag for my backpacking trips and I do not regret my choice at all. I've used this backpack in two trips so far, one to Peru in June 2015 and my last trip of 10 months through Central/Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The pack can fit all that you need easily, the materials are top quality and the organisation is perfect. The only con I can mention is that it's a little bigger than what RyanAir and WizzAir consider as carry-on size, at least on paper (8 cm longer and 5 cm deeper) ; I actually managed to get it into one of those "measuring" thingies at the airport but never really risked trying to pass it as carry on. So, if you want to fly with low cost airlines take that into consideration, I'm sure you can pass it as carry on but there's always that "danger" of being caught and made to pay to check the bag.

I'm a digital nomad. I carry this and a purse (55L/S/M). Traveled with it in Mexico for four months. I camped, stayed in hostels, airbnb's, and hotels. Works great and looks great in all situations. Now packing it for a seven month trip. Would buy again. Recommended.

I went for 21 days tours waking aroud thailand and 21 days treking in nepal and this bag is just the perfect for me . I can put anything i need and have it acces quick, just unzip the main bag and you can see all your stuff. When you get to a place where you are going to be for a couple days just unzip the caryon bag and you got your day pack. The only thing it dos'nt have is a rain cover, and you will defenitively need one, i dont care about walking in a mountain under the rain for a day long, but you need your stuff to be dry when you finaly reach your destination ....

Let me just start off and say that Osprey backpacks are amazing! Since my last trip abroad, I realized I needed a smaller backpack that is carry-on size. I had 11 flights my last trip and not once was I asked to check it in. It helps to unzip the daypack so it doesn't appear as bulky. I loved that the Farpoint zips all around. It was easy to reach in and grab whatever I needed. Because it's just one big storage compartment, it helps to have traveling cubes to stay organized. This pack is very comfortable. There is plenty of padding on the shoulders and hipbelt. Overall, a very good backpack! I recommend this one to all my friends.

I've used this bag on several 2 -4 week trips to Central America. I travel light, and it was perfect - especially for warmer weather packing. To illustrate how much you can actually fit into this, I use it with 3 slim packing cubes of clothes, a small cosmetic bag, a quart size ziplock for liquids, 1 shoe bag with 2 pairs of shoes in it, a sun hat, sarong, 2 bathing suits, and then in the daypack: electronics, small camera, guide book, scarf, light wrap, snacks, flat water bottle, few extras, and voila - ready to go! I pack enough clothing for about 6 days and then wash. The packing cubes work as compression bags and really maximize the space and help keep it organized. I LOVE how easy it is to open and unpack this bag and how well made, yet very lightweight it is. Handy that the straps fold inside, too. It's comfortable and stable for travel but I don't think I'd use it to trek or hike. I have the s/m size and always take it carry-on with no issues. I wish I'd had this when I spent 2 months in SE Asia several years ago. I look a top loading bag and it was such a pain to find things and not comfortable. I use the daypack by itself, too. I wish the water bottle holders were a little roomier, but other than that it's fine.

I took this on a 6 week travel through Europe right before Covid. Love the versatility of day pack and the roomy main pack. Some say it is too heavy as a combo? I think it is the perfect pack if you pack with lightweight contents in mind. The daypack can snap to your front in airport or train station and it distributes the weight well if waiting in line. Having some organizational pockets and zippers would make it better. Solution? Pack into small zip bags. Having a gusseted waterbottle mesh pocket on both bags would be good. The flat mesh pocket on the daypack is suitable for a 16 oz bottle.

Best pack ever. I travel a lot and I've used duffel bags and those Ironman bags they give to participants. Really great for keeping your things organized since it's top loaded. I also appreciate how it lets me utilize the day pack since most of the time i have to stash one inside my check-in luggage. I just wish they could've made the S/M pack short enough to fit into international carry-on standards because I get nervous bringing it as a carry-on on flights.

This is an awesome pack, I absolutely love it. I've used it to backpack Asia and Cuba where the majority of the time was spent in the city, and I've also used it on a 53 km hike in the New Zealand wilderness. The pack has fared great on every occasion. It is a true "all purpose" backpack. However, if I had to pick one "best-use", this pack is better for travel backpacking as opposed to long distance hiking trips. It should be noted that this is not a high-tech hiking pack, so this should be expected. It is definitely manageable for extended difficult hikes, but I can see how a more expensive backpacking trail pack would be more comfortable. Finally, the best feature of this pack is that it is able to be taken as a carry-on!! Just detach the daypack and where it as your personal backpack, then hand-carry the main pack onto the plane. I have never been told it was too large. PS - My zipper broke after a few years of use and Osprey sent me a brand new pack. Great company.
