I just returned from a 10 day trip in China, Cambodia and Vietnam. This was the only bag I took and it had pleanty of room. I was even able to carry in on the plane by detaching the daypack.

My family of three was headed out for a year-long adventure, so I bought one for both my husband and me. Our eight year-old daughter wanted one so badly, but she has to settle for a kids' Osprey pack until she's big enough to carry all her things. Maybe next time! This pack was great because we could each carry our backpack and pull a carry-on sized rolling suitcase. This made going up and down stairs and in and out of subways doable--not easy, but we could manage. Our first stop was a month of traveling in Thailand. We ditched the rolling suitcases and just carried all our stuff in the two far points. The zipper design makes access super easy and the mesh pockets inside help with organization. I also liked the interior compression straps that helped hold our clothing in place. By the end of our time the packs were heavy and I wouldn't do a long backpacking trip carrying this pack. The kangaroo carry option with the two packs is great! We did go trekking in Nepal and our porter claimed she was comfortable carrying the pack (not too heavy) since we all carried 1/2 of our own stuff and brought very little with us. Our porter used the external straps to attach her own personal bag as well. During our time in Kathmandu, my only daypack was the small one that's part of this pack. The mesh on it pilled EVERY piece of clothing it came in contact with. I contacted Osprey and they said they knew about this problem. Because I was in Nepal for the year, I didn't have a way to return it and therefore used the resources of Nepal and had a tailor take the small pack apart and cover the mesh with a different fabric. (I definitely held my breath when I gave him permission to take my backpack apart!) Now it's fine, but I hope Osprey fixes this problem. After Nepal, we traveled in Europe and taking these bags on small airplanes was no problem. We also could carry a lot and navigate our way through cities. I look forward to years of travel with my Farpoint!

I bought this pack for traveling overseas and have used it to go to Japan and Canada. My absolute favorite part is the detachable day pack and I have used that thing countless times, even when I decided not to use the main pack for one trip. The main pack is comfortable to wear and fits a surprising amount of stuff, but there is one thing that I found is a detractor and that is it is above most airline's carry on size restrictions. If you prefer carrying your bag on the plane to skip costs or for peace of mind, then this may not be the pack for you. Of course the thing looks small enough that I'm sure most airlines aren't going to stop you to ask to measure it - but if you get stuck in a full flight it's possible you may not be able to fit it in one of the overhead bins. It's a small issue, but could potentially be major for some. I do wish that there were more straps available on the outside of the pack - it would be nice to be able to strap a tent and sleeping pad on the outside, but if you're crafty I'm sure there's a way to do it.

Agree with previous reviewer. It will be perfect if there is a shoulder strap and some pockets. But still I love my Fairpoint 55. I survived 2 weeks of winter in Morocco with my winter gears, and it is just perfect. May be because I travel light, I only bring necessities, to me this is more than just weekend hike, I use it for travelling.

I bought this pack for a 4 week hiking trip in South America based on positive reviews on the net. During the trip, I discovered so many little things that can be improved to make this bag truly great but in it's current form it just misses the mark: - The bag is just a tad too tall to be carry on compatible. The main compartment is about 5-7cm taller than then general carry on luggage restriction. - Conversely the day pack is a bit too small and flat. It can't even hold a 750ml standard sized drink bottle without it popping out. - There are hardly any exterior carrying pockets for small items. - I was fairly careful with my gear but after the trip I discovered 3 holes on the day pack mesh pockets and some scruff marks on the main compartment. Compared to my partner, who picked a bag from a competing brand, the Farpoint feels really old fashioned. What I do like about the bag: - Very comfortable. The maximum load I carried was 10kg and the terrain was rocky and hilly, the loaded bag didn't bother me at all. - Love the belt stowaway cover. - Inconspicuous in color and look (after belt gets stowed away), useful for crowded and unsafe places. I just wish Osprey can reduce the main compartment size and increase the day pack volume, and add some mod con such as multiple outside carrying pockets (it's not hard to do, the competitor's bag did it). I look forward to any future improvements.

I love the bag, but the day pack needs work. When I get to my destination, I rely on the day pack and it is not great. you cannot fit a water bottle or anything in the exterior pockets. Osprey should raise the price a little and include a good day pack.

I bought this as a travel backpack to use around Europe etc. but I ended up having to return this. It's too tall to be considered a carry on. MAYBE you can get away with the S/M, but tall people travel too! Please, please please Osprey figure out a way to make both the S/M and the M/L size fit carry on guidelines. Have the straps connected closer to the top of the pack or something. This is such a comfortable backpack that's lightweight and lockable and easy to open up and close and organize. I love the detachable daypack and the size is perfect. It just defeats the purpose if I have to pay to check this bag on every flight I take. I would absolutely recommend this pack if the height issue can somehow be resolved.

Osprey..... You almost made the perfect pack, and seeing as how no one else is getting it right here is your chance to tap into a good market. There are two things missing on this pack to make it a true weekend warrior/ bussiness travelers dream bag. 1- more tech/ bussiness oriented pouches and pockets in the day pack. Currently there is a laptop/ tablet sleeve (good start), and a large zipper pouch. The reality is that it's a mess. Pens, hard drives, usb charging cords, cell phone, wallet, etc all end up in a huge tangled mess. Help us travelers out to get organized. Take a cue from many of the techie day packs out there like north face surge, etc.. Doesn't have to be fancy, but ditch the deep zipper pouch and add some smaller compartments that we can work with 2- add a shoulder strap. The design of the far point 55 is brilliant, it's big enough to travel for at least 3-4 days depending on the climate, work, etc, but small enough to take as carry on with most domestic us airlines. It's not marketed this was, but if you take off the daypack portion, the main pack is carry on size. It looks the part when you stow the backpack straps, looking more like a modest duffle bag. The problem is you have to carry it by the side handle because there is no optional shoulder strap or attachment. I don't get it, the far point 40 has this feature but not this one? For my work, I need to travel fast and light through Washington and Alaska for days at a time. I'm really happy with the pack besides these two points. It is rugged and reliable, and when I suit up for office work in my travels it fits in as a sleek addition. It truly would be perfect if you would consider these two issues. Until then I'll be keeping my eye out for someone to get it right.

I liked this backpack over the 40 because of the detachable day bag. I bought it for a long trip and when it was fully packed, it was too heavy with the smaller bag attached. I ended up having to carry the small bag around separately which wasn't at all what I wanted. I had previously recommended it to my brother and sister in law and noticed that they were doing the same thing. It does fit in the overhead on larger airplanes (something 6 seats wide or more) but would be questionable on smaller ones. I have seen people in airports with the 55 and they are always carrying the smaller pack in their hands. I have never seen anyone with the day pack on their back. I ended up buying the 40 and am much happier with it. It's smaller but is 100% guaranteed to be a carry on. I wish osprey would build a space for the laptop along the back and fix the water bottle holders which are practically non-functioning.

I wish folks would stop saying that it is. You may be able to get away with it on many airlines, but it does not fit within the maximum dimensions for carry-on bags, even if you've unzipped the day pack. It's too tall.

Generally good design but somehow lacks a shoulder strap or attachment points for a shoulder strap which severely limits the utility of this bag.

This backpack showed some wear after my first 1 month travel abroad. On the back mesh of the large pack and the day pack to. From rubbing on my clothes the mesh created some fabric lumps on the pack which then created some distress and lumps on the fabric where my pack rested on my clothing. Super disappointed, definitely would not recommend..
