Why can't shoe companies leave well enough alone? The 1005 was my favorite tennis shoe in a very long time. Roomy toe box, good fit in the heel, lots of cushioning. Of course, 2 months after getting my first pair I tried to get a second and they were discontinued, replaced by the 1006. This shoe is so narrow I can barely get my foot in it without a sock on. The toe box is very shallow, leaving little room for your toes and the shoe is much shorter than the 1005. Can't tell about the cushioning because I am so distracted by how much they squeeze my feet that I can't wear them long enough to tell if they are cushioned. I guess I have to search for a shoe again.

At least a half sizer smaller and more narrow than the 1005. I bought the same size and D (wide) width as I wore in the previous incarnation of this shoe and after wearing them two times realize there's no way I can fit into these shoes and play tennis. The padding around the ankle is overdone, too. Darn. The 1005 was great.

These were a disappointment. I have a huge bunion from a toe injury & New Balance 1005 has always worked for me, but is no longer available. I had hoped this 1006 would take its place, but alas! Could hardly get my damaged foot in, so I will return them. Ordered the NB 806 to try at the same time, & this style is roomier, so will give it a try, even though one of the shoes was slightly unsown.
I'd also recommend:
Only New Balance for me. More stable than any other.

I have worn the NB 1005 for years, size 8N. I loved them....I play lots of tennis, needing a new pair every 3-4 months. I was heartbroken to discover they were discontinued. I decided to give the 1006 a try even though the reviews were so-so. They are terrible. My toes were crammed and the heel slid. They were sooo uncomfortable! I would never recommend these.
