I purchased these pants at SAIL two weeks ago and they are awesome. I worn it for snowshoeing and hiking. I even experienced light rain with it and they are really waterproof and windproof. Keep you warm and confortable with a good base layer underneath. You can feel they are well made and strong. Very compactable too.
However, be carefull with the sizes. I was planning to order the pants online but finally went in store to try them due to the previous reviews mentionning issues regarding the sizes. I usually wear medium on Arc'teryx gear but after trying them, i bought a small, medium was way too big. I'm 5'11, 175lbs.
Beside the size issue, they are bombproof pants.

"Small short" pants are a very good fit for me - 5ft 4in, 135 lb, 29in inside leg.
Good product, but very expensive. Just abpout worth if for me, as it's almost impossible to buy an equivalent product #with a choice of leg length# from anyone else.

I have worn these from Glencoe to rock hopping around the North East Coast Line.Bought as an upgrade from the old Berghaus Paclite, and the difference is night and day,and you soon realise why the price is high as performance wise they are extremely tough yet surprisingly light and breath very well over a pair of 3 season pants in winter, they also seem to perform well in keeping the wind at bay.The only reason a 5* was not achieved was the overall fit, which is rather on the baggy side, even with a substantial pair of trousers under them. All in all do not think about purchasing these just buy them, like me you will not regret it and it soon becomes obvious why they are expensive.

I bought these pants to replace my Arc'teryx bibs that have worn out. I am 5'11" and 175lbs. Every pair of pants I own is a medium size and my waist is 33". These medium sized pants were too small at the waist and very tight in the mid section. Also the pocket config is bid weird. Just one pocket on the leg.

Fit: As a tall lanky man (6"2"- 175 lbs), Arc'teryx medium (regular fit) fits pretty darn well, just a little short, but since I'm mostly climb in these I don't mind. I now have a medium (tall fit) and it's almost too long, but I guess the longer pant will protect my footwear from pointy things a bit better than the regular fit, and as it's easier to patch the pant than boots, I suppose that's a positive.
If you're used to the previous version of this pant, a few things you need to know before replacing them with these newer ones.
Feel: the shell material on the newer ones feel more supple than the previous ones.
Pocket: the pocket now has down-facing zipper cover and is now over the thigh and a bit lower instead of being higher up and closer to the hip -> this eliminates friction/wear on the pocket part of the pants if you have things (i.e., phone) in your pocket. But now if you have things in your pocket, the whole pocket tends to bobble a bit more against your leg when your moving fast.
Side-zip: Previous version were excellent alpine pants and had a nice 3/4 zip so I could take them on and off with boots on. These new ones have two separate side-zips on each leg that don't connect (i.e., can't take them on and off with boots on). I just don't understand why Arc'teryx had to go and ruin a great alpine pant.

Height inclusivity is a topic that doesn't get talked about... I hate it when I'm forced to say "I'm too short so this item is not for me, I'm too short so this sport is not for me, Im too short so this career is not for me, blah blah I'm too short to exist in this world" when in reality the opportunities are just not quite there yet. Anyways onto the review, a whole lot of the pants are not petite friendly, the knees and the crotch are not positioned at the right spots and etc. When there is is a 'short' option there's almost always no stock...the shirts and jacket are like dresses for me so I end up rolling the sleeves or the bottom of the pants. For someone who sports femininity & performance together, it doesn't really show with any of my arc outfits. No sane person would try to get goretex pants or jackets tailored.

I've had the Beta AR Pant for a couple of years, used in in rough alpine terrains all-year incl. skiing, icecliming, mountaineering and city biking to work.
Now it's time to replace the pant. But what do I see now?! NO LONG SIDE ZIPPERS any more! No, no, no!
The biggest advantage of the pant was the possibility to put it on/off without putting on/off (ski/hiking) boots. And of course the full ventilation. This is a huge disappointment since Arcteryx ist one of the few manufacturers that produces a wide product range in short/tall versions.
Besides that: great pant!

I so wanted to love these pants because I get cold in the winter and I also wanted a pant to accompany my Arc'teryx Alpha AR Jacket for winter snow backpacking.
I am a slim backpacker who hikes in all kinds of conditions (5'5" 95#). Arc'teryx is one of the remaining brands that carried sizes small enough for me. I usually can wear the smallest size and have it be a little big. Unfortunately these xs pants are so big, when I tighten the waist as tight as possible, they fall off and both legs can easily fit in each pant leg with room to spare (I tried them on with double baselayer pants on).
I wish the sizing were more consistent throughout Arc'teryx clothing. I don't care what size it says on my clothes, I just want to be able to find clothes that (somewhat) fit. Unfortunately, I have also contacted Arc'teryx and they are discontinuing many of their smallest sizes.
Yes I would recommend these pants to someone ... just beware of sizing and do not get stuck on what size you should be. They are, like all Arc'teryx items, extremely well made.

I purchased the Beta AR Pant to complete a performer system capable of dealing with various conditions. A Large Short is almost the right fit, however, the GORE-TEX Pro material is unforgiving and can at times restrict movement. Given more room in the crotch area would significant improve comfort and allow a greater range of motion. I purchased a decent pair of suspenders and feel the system works better with slack in the belt.

I am 5"2, 115 lbs. I can usually get by with XS, but these are way to long, even with ski boots. It is really disappointing not to have the option of short, given these are high-end pants. At that price ( 550CAD) I expect a much better fit, especially that its not possible to get them tailored (with the side zip + warranty will not apply if item is modified I was told in store). Browsing through the comments I can see that this issue was raised already 2 years ago but unfortunately is not resolved.

Bought two weeks ago and tried them out during a week hiking in Wales and going caving. Couldn't believe I couldn't put them on without taking my boots off. I wouldn't have bought them for this reason alone and feel a bit silly for not reading the reviews in more detail before buying. Great when wearing but the designers must have either had a good reason for doing this or been asleep at the wheel. I wouldn't buy these again.

I purchased the previous design of beta ar pants because it had a 3/4 leg zipper. It was very convenient for hiking because you did not have to remove your foot wear to put on the pants or remove the pants. If the weather turned bad it was easy to put on your pants quickly and efficiently without taking your boots off. Unfortunately I had a warranty issue with my pants and I sent them in for repair and it was defective so arcteryks sent me the new model which fit really well. The only down side was that now the zipper does not unzip all the way making it hard to put the pants on in bad weather without removing foot wear. And same when weather gets better you have to stop sit down and remove footwear to take beta pants off. It would be nice to see a full zip again to make the versatility of the pants better.

I recently used these trousers on a mountain climbing expedition. For three days I struggled keeping these trousers up. They kept falling down, well past my waist, exposing the my skin to the elements. For the price I paid, I'd expect this pair of trousers to stay up.

Just bought these trousers and feels hard wearing - first impressions is that its a good design overall. However, when I tried them on they were a terrible fit. I got these in the 'SS' (Short/ Small) and the inseams are long. The short inseam is 30.5 inches which is long for a 'short'!! Petite leg lengths are usually 28 inches so this is not 'short' unless you are 5'4" and taller. Also, my waist is 27 inches so I wasn't able to order XS in Short as the only size for Short is Small, which means the hips are far too big for me.
I am 5'2" and have tried these trousers with various boots/ shoes for walking and hiking... and they sit too long, buckling and gathering around the ankles. For the price of these trousers I would prefer a nice fit, not sitting wide around my hips and gathering around my ankles.
Please can someone in Arcteryx come up with a better design for the small and petite climbers/ hikers out there.

Just rode my bike in pouring rain and 39 degrees which is great for testing waterproofing since you don't sweat when it's that cold. The pants I was wearing underneath were quite wet, mainly at the knees, which indicates that the membrane failed to keep the water out. I've had these for one season, so they should still be good. My jacket which is gore-tex pro from another brand stayed completely dry. I'm very disappointed as everything else about these is great.

I purchased a men's small-short online after trying on a small-regular length in store. I was initially impressed by the lightness and choice of material and fit in the seat and knees. However once I put these on for a backcountry trip, I was surprised how limited the freedom of movement was in the crotch. Long strides both hiking and ski touring were held up by a lack of movement in the material in the inseams and crotch. No matter how I adjusted the pant (up or down at the waist) they never quite felt that I could move freely! I will unfortunately be seeking a buyer for a lightly used pair of beta-ar's shortly.

I ordered these in small (I'm 5'4 " , 125 lbs) two seasons ago and have field used them for two years- 2 week canoe trips w hiking in Canadian arctic, sea kayaking in Greenland, general everyday use, hiking and paddling in S Ontario. They replaced an old pair (MEC) of goretex pants that had seen their day. I must say this is the first piece or Arcteryx gear that has been a fail for me- I own and use a bunch of your wonderful (but pricey) gear. Gamma pants, gamma lt jacket, Fortez hoody, Theta Goretex jacket, Covert fleece- all have been bombproof in all conditions, and wear wonderfully. BUT, the pant length is a real problem - these as they have full zip.(can't be shortened) I'm 5 '4" with inseam of 28.5" and the inseam length is 31.2", the extra are dragging on the ground getting dirty and worn, and creating a tripping and snagging hazard. I am frustrated as they are great trip pants, but only if you are 5'6 or 7 or taller. I find I'm avoiding putting them on during trip unless severe weather makes it unavoidable. With upper body items the sleeve length isn't as crucial as you can compensate by cinching down the velcro closure at the wrist. That isn't an option for these pants. I cinched them up with the elastic drawstring- creates a large balloon effect at the ankle that is a tripping/snagging hazard. The pants are only 2 seasons old and now have damage. I'm frustrated, considering the cost, and the fact that they don't do what I purchased them for. Am now thinking of looking to another manufacturer who might put out a SHORT version of expedition rain goretex pants that will work. PLEASE, Arcteryx, offer this to outdoor women who are petite and keen on performance wear in the extreme weather. It MATTERS to those of us who enjoy wearing your great gear but can't get these great pants to fit or work.

Expected a better fit from these Arcteryx trousers. Quite a low waist band, not very practical for snow and ice sports like skiing or alpine climbing. Along with the fact the waterproof jackets tend to be too short for me at reasonably average height of 5ft 7 could leave a very drafty middle full of spindrift!
Don't seem very well fitted either. Used to have some old north face summit pants that managed to be sleeker while still having total manoeuvrability in the same fabric. These seem a bit cumbersome.

Had the 2013 version so bought the revised 2016 cut. Theyve taken out so much of the thighs that you cant wear layers or bend over. I dont even think an XL would do it. For betas that should be roomy these are such a slim fit. If youve got thighs dont bother. Will be returning these :(

These pants no longer have a built in gator and are not suitable for backcountry skiing - WHY?? I have had 2 Pairs of Beta AR pants and have worn them each for approximately 500 days of skiing. These were the best ski pants on the market - they had excellent fit, durability, lightweight, good features, superb articulation etc. Why did you stop making them for skiing? The Sabre Pants are not the same thing - they are much heavier and have very poor articulation. Missing the old pants!!
