This is by far one of the best backpacks I have gotten. I have been known to use my backpacks for 3 or 4yrs before getting a new one. I will be using this backpack for school. Having the laptop compartment makes life so much simplier. My school laptop will not only fit but there is still room to have a laptop case in it also. The main pocket has lots of space to fit notebooks and folders while still feeling roomy. I love how the front pocket has so many compartments. I can fit my pencil pouch, calculator, notecards, etc. without making constant stops to my locker. This backpack will definitely come in handy when track starts up also. I had trouble not having enough space with my old backpack and having to carry all my books. With this backpack I'm hands free because everything fits. It can get a little heavy if packed too full, but hey what backpack doesnt.

This is by far the best backpack I have ever owned! It is a great size, not too small and not tremendous. The cushioning on the straps is such a pleasure and eleviates pressure from my shoulders and back. The design is perfect for High School.

This is a great bag that's fits everything you need and is convenient throughout the bag from the computer casing to the two external pockets. It is great for traveling on a plane or hiking through the mountains. It is the bag that fits everyone's needs!

My girlfriend recently got a job that will involve a significant amount of air travel, and her old backpack was not going to cut it in terms of storage size and features. I cannot emphasize enough how great the TSA-approved laptop sleeve is. She did not believe me that it would make a noticeable difference going through airport security, but the first trip she took this backpack on, she called me to apologize and tell me I was absolutely correct. Additionally, this backpack has excellent pocket organization. There are multiple sections of varying size to store anything needed during a trip from jackets to notebooks, and there is my personal favorite feature, the organizer pocket in which there are several pouches and pockets for various electronics and gadgets. The backpack fits airlines' size requirements for carry-ons, and it stows comfortably beneath the seat. The colors are distinct enough to give it an individual feel without being garish and juvenile. Again, I could not be more pleased with this purchase, and you will not find a sturdier, more feature-packed bag than this.

It may have been pricier than the backpacks I carried prior to college but I know it is going to last so much longer. It's clearly well made and sturdy but on the off chance something should go wrong I know I've got the lifetime warranty. The pocket for my laptop is genius and I know it will be protected. It has so much organzied space so its perfect for all of the things I'll be carrying.

I can't hike at all, but I do have to walk (or run) across my huge college campus carrying my heavy books, laptop, etcetera. With the Surge backpack I have the best possible weight distribution and tons of extra space, with so many pockets and pouches that everything has its own tidy compartment. The lining is very protective and soft for electronics, which is a great bonus. The pack even looks very stylish and the materials are super durable (more so than previous models, even). This bag will last easily three times as long as my last bags, which have literally torn apart, so the price is way worth it. Your back will thank you.

I am excited to give this pack to my daughter for her birthday. I looks like a very nice, well-made pack. I appreciate the fact that it's guaranteed for life, since we have not had great luck with other backpacks from other brands lasting.

Got this backpack for my nephew for his birthday. Met all the checks....many colors to choose from, durable, "cool" for school, holds laptop, and books. This backpack looks awesome and looks like it will last more than one school year with a teenage boy!

While I have not had this bag long, it has performed well. It also holds more than it initially appears and has some nice pockets in smart places. I particularly like the fleece lined areas for things like sunglasses and electronics!

This bag is much worse than its predecessor, the Surge 2.
Initially, I would like to say that the bag is very well-built and seems like it would last a long time. The fleece pockets are nice quality, and the laptop sleeve is soft and protective, which is very important.
The bag's largest and crucial flaw is that the shoulder straps are very uncomfortable. At first glance, they seem fine. However, there is stiff mesh "padding" that goes around the strap at the neck area, and it is very abrasive and painful to wear. The whole strap and back of the bag area is stiff, and the straps simply scrap your neck and are not comfortable. I have tried many bags, and this is simply not tolerable. I asked my family members to try the bag as well, and we unanimously decided that the bag isn't comfortable and that the straps are a serious design flaw.
I am a college student, and I was sincerely wanting to like the bag. It looks great, and has all of the features that I need. However, it simply is not comfortable.
I purchased the bag and kept it for a week. I wanted it to "break in" in hopes that it would be more comfortable with time, but it simply wasn't.
I returned the bag to purchase the Surge 2 on a popular bookbag website for nearly $50 less than this bag. The Surge 2 is much nicer for many reason, but mostly because the comfort is far superior to the new bag. As an added bonus (if you have read this far), the older Surge 2 has a place for storing the waist straps, while the new bag has no storage for the straps and the must instead dangle at your hips.
Do yourself a favor and purchase the older bag. It's much cheaper, and far more comfortable. You won't regret your decision.

This is the best backpack I have ever had. I love all the pockets it has and its sleek design. It is easy to tell that it is well made and well thought out.

I have had a lot of backpacks over the years...this one is at the top of my list. I am not ashamed to say that I am a nerd. Yep, I pack quite a few books home everyday, along with my cross country and track gear. I have tons of room to stuff my electronics and gadgets as well. The best part of this backpack is the comfortability factor. It was made to fit my body. The BEST purchase I have made so far this year...I won't be buying any other brand..I'm stuck on The Surge.

I love this bag. The grey+mint colour combination is perfect, and I get complemented on it daily. It's perfect for me as a grad student because I can carry plenty of books and supplies at once, while keeping everything organized and separated. The only thing that I find strange is the way the shoulder straps are connected to the pack. It seems weird to use a thin strip of cordura to attach the straps instead of sewing them into the body of the bag. Maybe NorthFace has a reason for doing it that way though. It certainly doesn't make the bag less comfortable to wear!

I purchased this backpack for school, but really use it for everything. It holds hiking gear, school stuff, even all my soccer equipment! It's ultra light and comfortable, perfect for long hikes, climbs, or bike rides. Also, all the pockets make it great for organization, and the two awesome handles rock for getting around campus. Perfect pack.

I truly love this backpack due to the amount of space it has for school books. As a nursing student, my books can be pretty large and heavy, so I don't have to carry books in my hands and the design evens the weight across my shoulders/back and allows me to remain in good posture. I love this backpack and I would definitely pay the extra dollars all over again.

I needed two back packs for my twin granddaughters' birthday gifts. They picked them out online and I ordered them. It was really important to purchase just the right back packs as they are starting a new school--high school--and they want to be in style!

This backpack is amazing! The two large pockets are so spacious. I don't bring my laptop to school, but I can fit 3 binders in it! After I got my backpack, my sister was so jealous she ordered one just like it! It is very durable and will not rip or tear. The padding on the back can adjust or "fit" to anyone's comfort. It has millions of pockets for pens, pencils, your iPhone, iPad, notebooks, etc. I definitely recommend this backpack for someone who has a lot of textbooks for school, or is planning to go on a trip soon.

The back pack is great and vey well built but the size specified in the details is incorrect. When I received the backpack I was disappointed to find out that it was smaller than described since I needed it for school.

As someone who's owned two north face bags before, this one is by far my favorite. This one looks tough and very comfortable. I got the all blk and love it.
