This is the 'newer' incarnation of Hedgehogs. I've hiked in the older version for years and, while great traction & waterproofness (gtx), they always felt a bit narrow for my wide foot. BTW: I'm a woman who always wears men's hiking shoes because of the width. These 'newer' Hogs have been made wider in the toe box & less 'sneaker-like' than the older version. Also they're higher cut up the ankle area. All updates are great! Less toe-cramping doesn't mean wider heel. On the contrary. Heal is snugger. Higher cut provides better ankle stability w/o having to wear mid-cut boots which I hate. All around firmer feel of shoe is more supportive. Tread is the same as always. Multi-directional and many lugs. Require nearly zero break in time. Same good arch support. Only complaint is cheaper, thinner removable insole. Needs better padding in metatarsal area and better heel cradle as in older insole. Just have to swap them out for better ones. If I could get a women's wide, I'd take a 9W. So in men's, I get a 7.5 reg. FYI.

These are the most uncomfortable shoes that I have ever purchased. I was actually in pain after wearing them. Do yourself a favor and order the Merrell Moab instead.

I have flat feet that hurt all the time finding shoes that do not cause pain flare up is hard. These are extremely comfortable. I walk for miles without any problems I also need a total joint replacement in in one of my big toes. These also help in that department.

I agree with anonymous... these shoes offer no comfort at all. They are basically flat and have no padding. I miss the old XCR's which were the best pair of North Face shoes I ever had. Who would produce such an uncomfortable shoe? I had such high hopes.

So far, I love them. Good fit and comfortable. I haven't had them long enough to judge durability. I like the "grippy" sole. It doesn't slide on slick surfaces the way hard Vibram does. I got them because North Face doesn't make the older model that I have had for 2 years and love so much I just got re-soled to use for dirty work. These were the closest match I could find to the old ones.

Good fit and glad it was a little wider than expected. A very stable shoe. The insert is too firm. Just two words, memory foam people! OK three words. With all my minutes of experience as a shoe design engineer I think all shoes should have memory foam inserts. We should all stand together...in comfortable shoes...and demand memory foam inserts!
I do like the shoes and would buy again.

Bought these to replace a pair that I had from 8 years ago(different model) For starters they are just as comfortable as the previous pair I owned. The sole is grippy and the toe rubber was a nice touch on the new version. They are a tad bit bigger though. Previous were an 11 and fit perfect these were also an 11 but probably could have fit into a 10.5 Overall good shoe for the price. Ive never been disappointed with The North Face and these are no exception.

I purchased 3 pairs of hikers from Zappos to pick the one's that I liked best. It was these Hedgehogs, a pair of Salomans and a pair of Ahnu's. When I tried them all on, there was no comparison, these shoes were the most comfortable hands-down. Had em a few weeks now and love them.

The first pair of these lasted me several years, until the soles disintegrated. My second and current pair have lasted me a year and a half, before the soles started disintegrating. Not the kind of durabiliy I've come to expect from Vibram. The tops for both are still fine, but nobody re-soles shoes these days....

These are my second pair of Hedgehogs, the first pair I had for about two years before the toe rubber started coming undone. These are updated and have the stitching further up on the toe with durable rubber going higher up - totally fixing the issue. The one problem I have with these shoes is that the shape of them is a too pinched where the Achille's tendon touches the shoe. The rest of the shoe looks brand new, but there are already holes worn into this area. Plus, they have started to give up support in the area, leading to mild tendinitis if I go on long hikes with them. I wish the shape was a little less pinched in this area and more durable there - although to be fair, my tendons are probably thicker than average. If you don't have thick tendons - I would recommend these highly.

I used three pairs of this shoe on my 2016 through hike of the Appalachian trail. I got 750 miles on each pair. The tops and soles wear out at about the same time. The toe caps begin to peal right away in the rocks and they will only stay dry for about 30 minutes in the rain. They are very comfortable and seemed to be more durable than many of the other shoes that I saw on the trail this year.

For some reason these kill the tops of my feet. I wore them around the house quite a bit and they felt okay so I thought I would be good to walk outside. Unfortunately when I walked outside I ran into issues. After a mile or so my foot was in a lot of pain. Unfortunately at this point I cannot return them so will have to donate them.

Not durable as heal's outside edge broke off within 9 months of purchase. It looks like a design fault with this version of the sole as the think rubber holding the side of the sole on is not strong enough. Pity as these hiking shoes are the most stable and confortable ones I have ever owned.

I'm very happy with these. Great fit for wide feet. Nice and grippy on trails, ice and snow. Pretty comfortable. The Achilles’ tendon area might be irritating for some. I was concerned but they were fine for me, at least.

I like them. Comfy, wide fit with enough build to handle moderate trail terrain. Gtx can be warm in hot climates but nice when it's wet. I would buy another pair!

These are some of the best shoes I've ever owned. Really comfortable, impressive water resistant properties, lightweight and breathable. This only unknown for me at this point is longevity. Assuming they hold up in the long term I would gladly buy them again in the future.

Like everything about them so far. Even bought a second pair and they were on sale too. I wear 15 4E so obviously, my size isn't easy to come by. Good looking shoe.

Super comfortable all around! Takes pressure off the toes and heels.
If you're looking for a painless way to hike or trek when it comes to maintaining lower body strength, these shoes are one of the best assurances I've comes across!
