This review is based on trying it on and initial impression only, at this point. I'm 5'8" tall and 170 lbs, average build. (for an American!) I'm usually right between a medium and a large, so I shouldn't be ordering jackets online, but I tossed the dice and lost this time. I figured large would be more roomy for layering a thick sweater underneath. However, if the arms and bottom hem are ridiculously long, (as they were on me) room for layering doesn't matter. I sent it back and asked for a medium instead. Shipping was slow; almost 3 weeks.
The materials and build quality are top-notch, in-line with what you'd expect on a jacket in this price range. No sloppy finishing, like loose threads everywhere. Smooth and tight zipper action. Adjustable hood overhang is nice. Handy pocket locations. Velcro is quality and not the old type that will start to get puffy and loose in a short time. Omni-heat reflective liner works great for warmth, (I have it on another Columbia jacket) although it doesn't breathe as well as advertised. In that regard, it's just like the space blanket material that spawned it. Gore-Tex is better.

I just used this the first time yesterday in Park City and I'm very happy with this jacket.
Sizing is accurate, good length. I was worried it would not be warm enough, but yesterday on a 25 degree bluebird day I was almost as warm as on my retired 2O llbean parka. Lining is some kind of high tech material, but seems to do the job. Outside fabric seems to be water resistant- and happily not too slick texture. If I fall when skiing a steep or icy slope, it's nice if the jacket will create some friction
Jacket has more pockets than the description - a pleasant surprise! I'm baffled that the product descriptions for ski jackets don't do a better job at this. This jacket has:
2 side zip outside pockets
1 chest zip left side outside pocket
1 chest zip left side earrings inside pocket
1 left arm zip ski pass pocket credit card sized
1 inside waist height mesh goggle pocket- no zip
Good jacket over all- worth the price for a serious skier!

I am a 5'9 male, 180 lbs, average build, and purchased a medium sized jacket. This is a great skiing/snowboarding jacket! I absolutely love it! The Omniheat construction is so crucial. I have worn this on multiple snowboarding trips where the temperature is 20F and all I wore underneath it was an under armour t shirt or a long sleeve midweight baselayer shirt and I was comfortably warm, even sweating at times. i only need to layer up when I'm in temperatures in the teens. I often keep my iPhone in the inner zip pocket and it has never gotten wet by snow or condensation. The snow skirt has kept snow out when sledding or when falling on my snowboard. Overall, im extremely happy with my purchase and I plan on keeping and wearing this jacket for many many years.

This jacket fits really well and true to size, and is perfect for skiing. It's light and thin, but it keeps you very warm with the technology built into the jacket. It has plenty of pockets for gear.

This jacket came right before a(nother) winter storm hit the Portland area and my boyfriend absolutely loved it! The fit (large) is perfect for him, he's just over 6foot but thin and has long arms and it looks great. The black looks great. I want my own!

I purchased this jacket just after new years and have been wearing it regularly in the northeast. Not extremely cold out but often below freezing. With just a light layer underneath I have been comfortable. I am very please with the materials and workmanship. A lot of thought has gone into the design and it works. Pocket placement both inside and out make it very easy to carry a variety of items safely. The inner elastic cuff works beautifully and keeps everything out. No snow or rain working its way into my sleeve.

It is what it says it is and then some, light but very warm. Keeps the rain off of you and keeps you warm in the snow.

Upon receiving this coat, the initial wears were a bit rigid. The coat takes a week or so to break the fibers in, but after that, it fits like a glove...like a coat should.
Sleeves are a bit long for a medium, but I'd rather that than too short.
As lightweight as the coat is, you'd think it's not very warm, but it is. I took the trash out one 18 morning with just a t-shirt on underneath. Couldn't feel the wind through it, and it retained the heat very well.
The fit is a sleek active fit, so I can see how it would lend itself to skiing and hiking. Very streamlined. I look forward to putting this coat through the rigors once winter decides to actually rear it's head.

This jacket filled a gap in my outerwear - I didn't really have something for damp, rainy, or windy weather when the air temp runs from 32 to 50 degrees F. I have a parka-style heavy coat for snow and extreme cold and an uninsulated rain jacket for warm and rainy days. The Alpine Action fits perfectly between them. I don't do snowsports, but I do plenty of hiking and walking around in winter when the temps are chilly but not bitter cold. This jacket is just what I needed.

Purched the alpine action jacket for myself and wife. Took them out camping in the rockies this weekend 11/12-11/14. The nights were in the low 30's and i hardly noticed. Plenty of pockets for glasses, gloves and my other backcountry needs. Very nice jacket.

Just got this coat and it looks and feels great, although I have not actual gone skiing in it yet. However, I wanted to post this positive review because Columbia Sportswear was so helpful in terms of assisting me with this transaction.

This jacket was amazing. It kept me warm all day in the cold Montana mountains in late December. It has pockets everywhere that are convenient for holding the essentials while skiing. It's extremely warm without being too bulky. I was able to unzip the pockets with my gloves on as well. I'm glad I bought this jacket for my ski trip.

This is a very nice jacket that helps to keep me warm. One suggestion is to make the zipper two-way. It will be more convenient when sitting down.
