I'm a jacket freak! I used to have a lot of struggle finding the right jacket for spring and fall, where the temperatures are around 15-18 Celsius. Either it's too hot or too cold. So I began with layers. Merino, a fleece and then the shell, whether it be the soft shell like the Gamma LT for trekking in dry weathers where the wind can suddenly cool you down or hard shell Beta SL for rainy days. And boy it can take a beating. I was trapped in heavy rain in the woods doing a film shoot and I just packet the camera and me under the big hood and we could have been there for hours without a drop if the rain hadn't stopped. Very impressive. The only pro I have is that the jacket is very warm to wear unless the rain is falling.

I wore this jacket for a 6 km trek in pouring rain and ice pellets. I wore a fleece underneath and stayed dry and warm. No leaks. Kept the wind out too.

I own a few other Arc'teryx shells and this one seems to stay with me the most, usually in my pack though. This thing has been through quite a few activities, from year-around backpacking, alpine climbing, backcountry skiing, and even around town.
Weight: this is the lightest shell I own, hence it's always with me as an emergency shell at least. For the typical PNW rain spells, this jacket is a lifesaver. It stays with me all spring and summer. If I know I'm in for harsh weather, I might throw in my Alpha AR and take a slight weight sacrifice. For unpredictability, I bring this jacket.
Durability: a few points off here, but a lot of this is misuse on my end. Sharp rocks, bushwhacking, and penguin-sliding down snow/ice isn't the healthiest thing for this jacket. If I know I'm entering a world of sharp and abrasive things, I might throw in my Alpha AR instead.
Breathability: when I bought this jacket, the Beta SL hybrid was not out yet. I always wished this thing had pit zips, so consider this when picking between this and the hybrid. If activity is down to a moderate level or you're waiting out a surprise rain surge, consider this jacket.
Fit: this jacket looks great and feels great. I even wear this around town. Consider wearing a long-sleeve base layer underneath if you plan on sweating a lot in it; this does get a little clammy feeling at times. The inside has a very smooth finish.
Overall: for my minimalist needs of needing an emergency shell or something light weight, this jacket is perfect. It's always there for me in my pack with minimal weight.

This jacket sits next to the spare tire in my car. It is perfect for those times that I forget a jacket, or get stuck somewhere in a downpour. Completely waterproof and comfortable. I think of this jacket like an umbrella. If it is raining I put it on because it is better than getting wet. If it stops, I take it off because it doesn't breath the best. If you are looking for a jacket to hike and do activities in that you don't have to worry about the paclite inside the jacket getting damaged. Grab the Alpha FL. It is everything I wish that this jacket was but, it only has one pocket.

This is my first Arcteryx purchase after stumbling across the brand on another website that compares gear. While the price-point is definitely high I've been very impressed with the quality and performance. Its an excellent wind/rain shell. I mainly bought it for winter hiking, but haven't had a chance to use it for that yet. Even so with the use I've gotten out of it so far can tell it'll work for what I need - windproof but still breathable. Love the hood - very well designed, and with a hat you'll be extremely warm/protected.
Only minor quibble - would not add too much weight/bulk to have either pit zips, OR chest pocket OR one interior pocket. Nevertheless I love the jacket and look forward to getting more technical use out of it.

I know this jacket is aimed for minimal weight. This is my go to jacket i bring in my pack with me everywhere. Its light and has all the basic features I need to get through and unexpected weather. DWR is decent, will last me through a season in Oregon before I have to give it a good reapplication.
Given its price point and its need to be light it was lacking features compared to my ar shells. The ONE feature i would like or I think would or should be standard with all shells is a pit zip. With not much more weight the alternative sl hybrid has this and a bit more features. Personally I wouldnt mind a few more grams for some ventilation in my pits.

Overall this is a very good jacket. It has been waterproof in extended periods of light rain. I haven't exposed it to a heavy downpour yet. The fit is excellent for my 5'10" 190lb. frame. The fit stays consistent with all types of body movement. The thing I noticed most was that it is a high quality garment for being a simple light rain jacket. The hood adjusts nicely but can be a bit cumbersome to find a way for it to lay out of the way when not in use. The attention to detail in the design of this jacket is very good too. The velcro cuffs are great and the hang loop is very sturdy which can be something that is overlooked on other brands.

I've been using this jacket for two years now and am very satisfied with it. I use it in a variety of sports, activities and conditions, but primarily for mountaineering and backpacking.
The highlights:
-lightweight
-packable
-durable
-comfortable
-well-fitting
-breathable
After two years of use, the jacket is still in great shape: all the seams and high-wear areas are completely intact. Indeed the jacket still likes fairly new despite heavy use. It breaths well and is completely waterproof and I like how the pockets are high enough so as to not be caught behind my backpack waist strap.
The reason that I give the jacket a 4-star review is because I really wish it had pit-zips. Another nice addition would be a a cord that allows you to tighten the area around the neck. The jacket currently has strings allowing you to tighten the hood around the face, but when it is cold I can feel heat escaping out around my neck and it would be nice to be able to cinch this area down.
I don't have any complaints, but just feel these changes would make a rock-solid product a perfect one. If Arc'teryx made these two changes, the jacket would be an absolute 5-star product.

i like this jacket a lot.. with that being said the only complaint is the lack of pitzips.. i know they would add bulk but boy does this jacket need it. it's light. its paclite! i love it because you can roll it up so much you can almost put it in your pocket. maybe you could add a tiny pitzip?? man. in the summer it's tough. i get sweaty in it. not enough breathability unfortunately.. this is the time of year when this jacket excels. you can roll it into a ball and wrap a rubber band around it and have it with you all the time. I roll it up and tuck it into it's hood. The fit is perfect i am 6.1 215 pounds and wearing a Xlarge. Typically I run the large but for this model the XL is a perfect fit. Good length. The hood is not oversized so a helmet may be a tight squeeze. Typical large arc'teryx front pockets mid height.. No interior pocket. Standard velcro cuffs(just smaller to go along with the packability) over all this is a great jacket. It gets a 4 star only for the summer sweat. enjoy!

I have had this jacket for two years and have used it on many trips hiking, backpacking and paddling. The jacket fits great, and I am always dry. The paclite fabric is ultra light and packable, although don't expect it to be very abrasion resistant or take any heavy duty abuse.
My only complaint is the hood is too big. Even with tightening everything up it still has the annoyance of falling over my eyes over my eyes, and I don't have a very small head. I see they have redesigned some portions of the jacket since, I hope they addressed that.

As an expensive jacket, I expected it to be durable against the harsh environments. Ironically 20 days after purchasing my jacket I noticed that a tag on the jacket actually cut into the delicate urethane lining. Very disappointed that the jacket ripped so quickly. I would probably go with the sl hybrid next time or a a moncler

Arc'teryx's Beta SL shell jacket is a very multipurpose jacket that I have used ice climbing and winter camping as well as summer backpacking. It is made of GORE-TEX PacLite fabric to be durable, waterproof, breathable, and very light weight. Arc'teryx names are designed to help the buyer understand the product better. Beta is their all-around line useful for any activity, and SL stands for super light. Because of that, this jacket is suited best for packing as an emergency waterproof layer on backpacking trips or on trips where you are certain you will be wet for part of it, because it packs small and lite it is the best option when you won't be wearing it for the entire trip. It has 2 outside packets, a hem draw cord, Velcro wrist cuffs, and a comfortable hood. The only down fall of this jacket is to save weight they cut out pit zippers so if you are worried about over heating in it you don't have that option to keep cool.

it pains me to give my beloved arcteryx anything other than 5 stars, but i feel as though i must. at 6' 215 lbs, the large fits well. i bought it when they still produced a dark olive green colour #which is quite handsome# hood works well like all other company pieces and it does indeed stop the rain- tested mine via my wife and the pressure washer in the back yard when i brought it home. my complaint would be that when i take it camping and we're hiking in to site, it feels more like a sauna suit a boxer would wear to drop wiehgt before a fight- doesn't feel much like the jacket lets any moisutre OUT, just focuses all its design efforts on keeping it out to begin with. if i am outside for a nice walk in the evening with wife and family- this will be your best friend. so thats my review: if your stuck with extended heavy exertion while it is also raining outside- you will get wet.....but it will just be your sweat your swimming in.

I've never had a problem with Arc'teryx products before, but after several weeks of light use, the inside layer has begun to scrape off any many places. As far as I can tell, it is still waterproof, but I'm bummed that a brand new jacket would begin falling apart within a month of light use.

I have a ton of Arcteryx products and have never had an issue. I have loved all of them. However I recently purchased the Beta SL jacket to be used as a packable shell for backpacking, hiking and ocean fishing.
The first time I took the jacket anywhere was to a 9 day trip to Alaska in which I knew it would be rainy. I wore the jacket in very very light rain on several days and every single time the seams soaked through. It was barely sprinkling. Also the material in the shoulders soaked through in a very short amount of time (less than an hour).
Not sure if I got a bad batch of gore tex but this jacket simply will not function as a waterproof hard shell.
Let me know if anyone else has had this issue or if there is anything I can do to solve it. Because other than that the jacket is excellent in fit and function. The hood like any arcteryx product is amazing and the range of motion is excellent.
Just very disappointed in the lack of protection from the rain.

First, I'll admit that this was probably the best fitting jacket I've ever worn. The color (amazon) was also very nice and the thing could be scrunched down into almost any size space I could think of... That's the good stuff.
I found myself wet in this jacket every single time it rained. Whether the problem was the lack of breathability (I don't sweat that much normally though) or that water was able to actually break through, doesn't really matter in my opinion. I was wet every time, unless that rain was very light.
I climbed Kilimanjaro in the rainy season in this jacket and it failed to protect me from the elements (rain and wet snow) which is too bad.
Another problem was most likely based on the 2-layer paclite fabric... I found that it scratched on the inside very easily. The outside of the jacket like all things arc'teryx was durable as anything, but the inside layer certainly left something to be desired.
If you're looking for a jacket simply for fit and maybe the quick 'emergency' shower while you run from your car to the house then this might be the jacket for you. I certainly would not recommend this for anything more than city slickin' though.

Got this jacket as a surprise present (thanks Grandma!) for a specific trip to the French Alps.
After less than 2 weeks and very light use I was somewhat surprised to notice a pretty severe manufacturing fault on the jacket. Took it back to the chain of shops that it was purchased from in a somewhat pensive mood. Manager agreed straight away that it was faulty and offered to send it back to Arcteryx who fully stood behind the warranty. To cut a long story short I took the faulty jacket on my trip (as I need it) and returned it to Arc on my return. I was told by the shop that it would take 4 to 6 weeks to sort out but from the time I dropped it off to the time I got it back repaired it was just over a week.
Have to say I felt that I got the service I would expect from a top end manufacturer.
Back to the jacket....
I'm not sure if the above has effected my opinion of the jacket or I'm judging the fabric (PacLite) but I feel very mediocre about it. It does pretty much everything that it says it does i.e. packs small into my daypack, has kept me dry in persistent rain while warm wether belaying, it breaths well etc etc BUT I just don't feel the say way about it as I do my other jackets.
I've managed to get 2 small nicks in the fabric which really annoyed me... grrrr!
To be honest it spends most of its time now as a back-up for when it rains unexpectedly while doing the shopping or on the way to/from work.... not very rock and roll or Arcteryx huh!

I was able to overlook the marginal breathability. If it's raining it doesn't breath. What did me in was the pockets filled with water!! A puddle in the bottom of both pockets which is where I had my car key fob and my I-phone each in a different pocket. Killed my phone!! I would have been better off in a regular jacket that was wet but not holding a puddle in the pockets! Yes, the pockets were zipped shut. I would have been better off in my I expensive precip jacket

I have worn this new, [purchased as a gift in December-I still have the label and the bar code as proof] S.L. Beta jacket only twice on walks in the rain. On both occasions, I came home with my inner clothing soaked -through a fleecy right through to my T-shirt. There was wetness inside the whole jacket ,but in particular, beads of water all around the top of the sleeves. At all times, the jacket was done up to the neck and the hood up.
I have owned Arcteryx products for many years and have never been anything but satisfied, but this jacket has been extremely disappointing and does not live up to the claim that it is "waterproof and highly breathable."
I would not recommend this jacket.
