These are excellent boots! I'm on my second pair. Wore the first pair for about 5 years and they are still in the rotation with the new pair. They age well and are my go-to shoes for nearly everything.
I added a foam insole for a bit more shock absorption. Personal preference.

Boots are well built but they came with a bunch of deep scratches.

Great looking, incredibly well-made boot.
Excellent craftsmanship and materials, from the tanning, to the sole, to the laces - a great boot that could seemingly last a lifetime (and it should for the asking price!).
Different styling inside -- very unfinished, basics without an insole cushion. Comfortable, despite that, even with thin socks.
Vibram heel feels firmer than every other boot I've ever worn.
Laces stay tied all day! You will have to take a few seconds to loosen the laces to get boot on/off, but this is a boot you can wear all day long. MOst of my other boots, I can't wait to pull off at the first opportunity. Not these. Even the occasional afternoon nap is comfortable with these still on your feet.
Runs ever so slightly large, and the color is slightly lighter than what I see on my computer screen.
American made.

Awesome boots. Came as advertised. Zappos as always is amazing. Love the thick leather and feel of a handmade boot.

The Chippewa Service Boot is superbly crafted with an oiled upper and a non-waffle Vibram sole. I like its visual simplicity and minimalist, functional style. Though it doesn't have an inner lining a nice pair of moderately thick wool socks and a set of Superfeet gives it the comfort I like especially during break-in. Perfect for autumn and early winter weather in upper New England. And they're still made in the U.S.

I have worn my Chippewa Service Boots for a week now. Break in was much quicker than anticipated. I love the look and have had two customers ask me what brand of boot they are. I could use some more cushioning on the sole but not a deal breaker. These boots run really large. I normally wear a 11-11.5 but my service boots are a 10. Love them and look forward to years of service!

Fantastic boots. Mine ran a little long, but I still love them. Durable, wear well, and so many compliments.

I love these boots. They're really versatile - can dress up or down with them - and everyone around agrees they look great. They feel a little larger than the size, but the Zappos return process is simple. My first pair was too big, but I returned them and ordered a size smaller on a Friday, and had the right size by Monday. Added some Scholls insoles, and now they're more comfortable than sneakers.

I just want to go ahead and let you know these boots will absolutely blow your mind at how beautiful they are. Perfectly crafted and you can tell immediately the amount of care and precision that went into making these fine boots. Chippewa has a name for making incredible boots, and in my opinion the best boots out there. Well worth the money and I have been receiving nothing but compliments on them from not only the younger generation but the older as well. If you're looking for a reliable boot that you want to last you forever...look no further. You can't beat a boot like these, class and durability all wrapped into one amazing boot. They run a smidgen big, I usually wear a 12-13 in most shoes, I got the 12 and there was almost a half inch in front of the tip. I was %100 satisfied as I like a little room in front, regardless with a little mink oil and breaking in they will essentially be a part of you. Just order them...I know you want to.

I was a little skeptical about these boots when I first read some of the reviews. However when I pulled them out of the packaging, I loved them. If you have read the reviews, heed their advice on sizing. You will need to order a full size smaller. These do take a while to break in and I will be buying an insole (Superfeet), but a highly recommend these boots.

I received a pair of the Service Boot in crazy horse for Christmas and I am very satisfied! These are very handsome boots and are well constructed. Be aware when you are choosing a size, the boots do not have inserts. I usually wear a 10.5 in boots, so I chose that size. I have orthodics and, after putting them in, the fit is perfect. I noticed the boots are stiff and will need to break in, so expect to wear thick socks. I highly recommend these boots.

Excellent and sturdy boot that's comfortable out of the box, durable, and very handsome. I've coated it with Sno-Seal and it's handled heavy rain well. My feet tend to sweat too much, and these boots haven't helped there that much, but they are warm too.
I ordered half a size smaller and they're perfect (maybe a bit too snug if I put an insole in).

Great looking, well made boot - which I expect for the price. The leather is very nice, and I like the laces - for some reason, they stay tied. They are definitely boots and will need breaking in. After a few days they start to come around, and in a week or two they are ready to go. The right boot rubbed the inside and outside of my foot along the seams. Maybe rubbed is the wrong word - it just felt like my sock was bunched up along the seams. I thought this would be a problem, but tying the laces more loosely helped and after a few days the issue was gone. The leather insoles are firm, which is normal for a boot. The insole on the left heel is just a little harder than the right on my boots. However, I think a thin, aftermarket insole will solve the problem. These are very nice boots, and I would buy another pair. (Although part of the reason I bought these is so I don't have to do that for a long, long time.) You'll need to break them in well, but once that is done they'll be your favorite boots.

I love these boots. I've had them for about four months and they've worn in beautifully. They were a bit stiff at first, as expected, but they're very comfortable now. I normally wear size 11.5, but ordered these in 11 and they fit perfectly. Kudos to Zappos for excellent customer service.

These are amazing boots! I love the look and the comfort of them. I would recommend them to anyone. The only thing is to get half a size down from what you normally wear, I am normally a 12 and the 11½ fit great.

These things are HUGE! I normally wear a size 10 in most boots. I ordered a 10 and a 9.5 and both were way too big. I would recommend ordering a full size down.
Beyond the sizing issue, these appeared to be boots of exceptional quality from the Vibram sole, to the leather, to the stitching to the waxed cotton laces.
I can't speak to the comfort since they didn't fit.

Recently got the Service Boot in cordovan and am very happy with my purchase. I'm "novice" when it comes to booting...but: 1) I bought the boot as my casual fall/winter boot. Its style serves this purpose well, but I think it could also work with certain business casual outfits, especially as the weather turns. 2) Its quality is obvious. 3) Sizing: I'm typically a 10 or 10.5 in dress shoes, 9.5 in loafers and sometimes an 11 in running shoes. I bought the boots in size 10 and they are perfect, but note that they did not feel "perfect" until I bought insoles. Strange, but they don't come with them. Once I went out and bought my own (cheap), the shoes fit great. In short, great looking, quality boot. I will consider buying it in another color as well.

I own many pairs of boots that of similar style, in fact I currently have 2 pair of Chippewa Service boots that I rotate. Simply stated, the Service Boot may be the best boot of this style on the market for many reasons - price, comfort, ease of break-in, care and style. First, the price is lower than Frye and Red Wing Heritage boots (ex: Beckman) and you are getting a boot that is just as good! Next, there is very little break-in with these boots; I have found that I can wear them easily 8 - 14 hours a day right out of the box! Boot care is simple and I personally find that Bicks #4 is by far the best leather conditioner to use on this product. I would not suggest going overboard with Oldenhauf's LP unless you are really hard on your boots and they will be exposed to frequent moisture. The grip of the sole is very good (in fact on ice this boot is pretty solid) and the wear is excellent so I would imagine you would get a couple of years of pretty consistent wear from them before they required a recrafting (resoling). Now, in terms of fit - I wear a 12 running shoe and typically an 11.5/12 in a leather soled dress shoe. There is considerable discussion about boot sizing and I have found that a size 12 ran true to size and provided me the necessary room for a high quality insole (Superfeet). Without the insole I would suggest to size down 1/2 size. I also recommend thinking hard about putting an insole in these boots because they have very little arch support (though, they are pretty comfortable without an insole). Overall, I believe the Chippewa Service Boot is a quality product, well-made and is meant for both hard wear and casual wear. I likely will buy a 3rd pair soon.

After searching around for a pair of rugged yet not overly clunky boots, I finally settled on the Chippewa service boots. I wasn't looking to use these for work or hiking, and so far they are fitting my casual needs perfectly. Based on other reviews, I ordered a 9.5 which is an entire size down from my normal 10.5. They fit perfectly length wise. I was slightly aprehensive that they were too narrow at first, but after wearing them for a little bit it is just a more supporting fit and hasn't quite broken in all the way yet. I would definitely recommend these boots.

I never write reviews. I am only writing a review, because if I listened to all the other reviews (the boots run large) then I would have ordered the wrong size.
Overall these are a great boot. A little rugged with the ability to dress up. Exactly what I was looking for. The arch support is a little lax, in not as much as I would have expected.
Now about size. This is my forth pair of Chippewas - Harness boot, Engineer Steel Toe, Apache GQ Steel toe and now these Service Boots. All are true to size. The steel toe do not offer as much forgiveness up front and get a little uncomfortable over a long day (I have wider feet). The non-steel toe are spot on for length and width although have a roomier toe pocket.
Sizing - these are about as true to size as you can get. I think it depends what kind of shoe you are comparing to. I wear a size 10D in Dress shoes manufactured by Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, Dexter, Bass, Bruno Magli, Tommy Bahama and they are all spot on with the boot. Allen Edmonds run a tad larger last throughout, but still pretty much spot on for size. These Chippewas are also spot on with Converse Chuck Taylors.
Where the size runs different for me is with Running Shoes - but running shoes tend to run small. See Road Runner Sports for ideas on upsizing your running shoes. My Asics are 11 or 11.5, Adidas 11 as well, Brooks 10.5 to 11, Nike at least 10.5. So if you are comparing to dress shoes or other Chippewas order true to size. If you are coming from Running shoes then you need to research your shoes and see how small the shoes run for a comparison.
Great boot, you will be happy you got them.

Wow. These boots look incredible and fit like a dream. I wear these daily in the cold Wisconsin winter. They aren't necessarily the warmest boots, but they looks sharp and wear well.

Good solid walking-around-town boot that you can wear as a dressy boot as well. Laces are high-quality and waxed. The boot leather is waxed as well, making them water repellant.

I had a few problems at first with some defects and the fitting, but it all got sorted out. After all, they are handcrafted I guess. The people at Zappos were great, true customer service! And I am very happy with this purchase. I was able to get it right after a couple of tries and I can say that they run on me exactly half a size smaller than what I usually wear. They look and feel like they will last forever, excellent quality. At first they are pretty snug and stiff, so you will have to break them in. After that they are really comfortable and have a good arch support. They have a very stylish vibe when you wear them. I am a very satisfied customer. Thank you, Zappos!

Just got my boots in the mail (and surprisingly a little earlier than expected). I'll be sure to update my review when I've broken them in and give more details but here's my first impression. Pulled my cordovan boots out of the box and was immediately pleased. Inspected them for any defects, from the stitching to the insole to any nicks or marks in the leather itself; no imperfections. The color was deep and rich like I expected and the leather isn't extremely stiff, but they will take a week or two to break in. Finally put them on and I was blown away. These are some quality handmade boots that can't be beat. If I'm just as happy as I am now in three weeks or so, you can bet they're be a pair in black in my collection and I'll make these my go to boots for my Alaskan winters.
