Every 5 years, I buy a new pair of the top of the line new balance. The m2040 is by far the best shoe I have ever worn. It is light weight and the fit and performance is the best I have ever experienced. I used it on a 5 mile hike on very steep hills and it was 100% comfortable with no break in required. I was truly impressed.

I was buying New Balance shoes from over two decades. I pick the highest number in New Balance for my tennis and running. I bought this shoe recently and is a great addition to my athletic pursuits. It is comfortable, great cushioning, support, fits true to size. Helps work out longer hours running or walking, etc. I would say buy this shoe if you love yourself and see yourself healthy soon.

Although new balance has always been good for me, these new made in America M2040s have not. In less than 2 months the soles have come completely detached in a few spots to the point where I can feel it when I walk. Unfortunately I can't recommend these shoes.

Best shoes ever owned! My wive bought the 2040's for me for Fathers Day. When I saw the price tag, I was taken back, but from the second I slid my feet in these shoes, it fit my feet like a glove. After lacing them up, I could barely feel that I had shoes on my feet. Very light, comfortable and worth every penny. Also, I ran my first 8 miles in them and my feet felt great. Lots of support and cushioning. Great job NB...another fine home made product!

You look at the price of these and you go, "What the..." But frankly they are worth the money. They are nicely detailed and everything you expect from a very high end athletic shoe. I use them to travel in and they work great for walking around - miles and miles. They are subtle enough to blend in with regular clothes and jeans - and that is nice - they do not scream running shoes - they are classy and understated.

I often write reviews of contemporary Brazilian music (Amazon) and hotel experiences (Expedia). But I've never taken the time to write a clothing/footwear review. Until now! I'm wearing my New Balance M2040 shoes even as we speak. These are truly the most comfortable (and best-looking) shoes I have ever owned. I am a walker/hiker, not a runner, so I can't comment on the M2040's performance as a running shoe. Also, I've had these shoes for only a few weeks, so durability is to be determined. But, my goodness, traipsing around in the M2040s is like walking on air. Now! Are the New Balance M2040 shoes worth their lofty price? Me, I'm a confirmed New Balance guy, and I own M993 and M990v3 shoes. Those shoes are nice - but with the M2040, New Balance takes things to a whole new level. Really, this is a different animal. If you can afford them, buy them!

I bought these for two reasons. Loyalty to New Balance and curiosity. I usually spend around $150 for a pair of New Balance running shoes, even though I'm not a runner. I saw these listed while shopping and wondered, "is it possible to justify a pricey sneaker?" Yes, it is justifiable. They're comfortable, but in a good walking shoe way, not as soft and cushiony as say a typical running shoe. They kinda feel like Ecco's. They look fantastic. I don't know how they did it but they pulled off a shoe that looks like it cost a lot. The downside is that I'm afraid to use them for anything but for when I need to wear my "dress" sneakers.

Not sure why this is so much. I have owned the 905 and bought the 990v3 over this which is over $100 cheaper and a much better shoe. First this looks like a hiking shoe from 1988. Secondly there is a ton of fluffy padding throughout the shoe which makes it seem more like a winter hiking boot, not a running shoe. It's not the nice synthetic lining like in the 990 or 905 that makes it easy to slip on. It's the suede like material that grips your sock and pulls it tight on your toes. I also found the achilles support to be a bit lacking and my heel had movement. So if you want a throwback to the Reebok's of the 80's with a huge price tag and a ton of unnecessary padding this is the shoe for you.

For a long time New Balance user these are by far the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I was so please with these shoes that I bought a "back up" pair for when these are destroyed.

A little heavier that what is now the norm - these shoes specialize in supportive comfort. Some surprises are the punched holes for the upper eyelets, that are difficult to thread through.

I returned the shoe primarily because it didn't fit well. That is certainly not the fall to the shoe. I'm writing to review however because the shoes cost over $300, are made in the United States, and are made of highly touted Horween leather. The fit, finish and construction are not bad but really not above average. The shoe lace islets were not perpendicular to the leather and were difficult to thread. This made them difficult to loosen and tighten. the quality of construction was not better than any of the many important shoes bought over the years. The leather was treated in a way that made it almost appear as a synthetic. Only time will tell whether it has any unusual qualities such as durability and longevity. These are not at all bad shoes, but certainly not worth the asking price.

Most comfortable shoe I've ever worn . . . until they hit the 6-month mark. True, I wore them a lot during that time - for work, hiking, and just casual - and I walk duck-footed so I wear out the outside part of the heel way before the rest of the shoe. However, the soles are delaminating in many spots, in addition to the off-balance feel I get from the unevenly-worn heels. I understand that part of the comfort and grip comes from the sole material being softer and having more give but that makes them wear faster. I should have put something like McNett or Shoe-Goo on the outsides of the heels before they wore down so that part is on me. But the delaminating of the soles should not be occurring on shoes that cost this much money, even after six months of heavy wear. Not sure about the replacement for this one - it was comfortable and, if I could get a year out of a pair, I would get these again, even at the astronomical price. But if I've got to replace them every six months, I may have to go with something more reasonably priced.

M2040 is very expensive, the problem is after only 6 months or so parts of the sole started peeling off, apparently the sole of the sole is made of many different component parts and even though I wear for normal street walking (not running) different components of the sole was peeling off. I have had this M 2040 shoe for about 9 months and so far about 5 different component panels in the sole has peeled off. I have bought 3 bottles of Krazy Glue (C$ 2.99/ bottle) to "glue" the panels back onto the sole. This seems to work. The shoestring also broke, although I easily got an replacement shoelace (C $ 10.00) at the nearby NB shop. I am not sure why normal pavement walking will cause the sole to "peel off" requiring the use of Krazy Glue to glue back on. This is the first running shoe that did this. I have to say besides the Mephisto running shoe, this is the most expensive pair of running shoes I have bought. I hope this message gets to NB, so they can look into why the sole (component panels) peel off. For such an expensive shoe this is not acceptable standard. It might also be I was unlucky to have bought a "lemon" (defective product)!

This is the most expensive athletic shoe I have ever purchased and the absolute worst. The workmanship is extremely shoddy. Soles soon began parting. Stitching coming apart. Holes forming on top fabric. Heavy and very poor support. Don't ever waste your money on these lousy shoes.

Excellent shoes! The first pair they sent were the size I ordered, but were too big for me. Zappos sent me the right size overnight; they were excellent!

Believe it or not, I think this shoe is worth the money. Yes, it is way expensive and you can find comfortable shoes for much less, but this is a class act shoe. It fits well, lasts well, and is very comfortable. I have traveled with it, walked miles and miles with it -- and would buy it again -- a very good shoe -- the price does indicate the quality of the materials and the design.

I have had these shoes for five months now, and I feel it is a good time to write a realistic review of the M2040. I wear these nearly every day for at least some time; and I have never in my life worn such comfortable shoes of any kind. My size is 11.5 W, and that is exactly what I got: no corners cut, no fiddling around, just the best fit I have ever had. Whatever you have to do -- scrimp on lunch, collect loose change, eat rice for a week and if you are looking for the best sneaker, best shoe, out there, then spend the money and get the M2040.

I just got this pair delivered today. Ever since, I've been walking around in utter astonishment that shoes can fit this perfectly and look this good, weigh so little, and were bought before being tried on. Well, the shoe that fits me is 11.5, Wide. I've been told to go a half size up to 12 M; nope, no, no. It's 11.5, Wide. And that is exactly what this shoe is. It feels like someone took my foot measurements before designing the shoe. So much for fit, comfort, and look. I'll update this in a few months to report on its performance over time.

Expensive shoe, worth the money. Well made, comfortable; the muted colors work in a casual business setting. I bought these for my husband who has severe foot problems. Out of the box, he took them on a 5 day 6 city business trip, and came back smiling with no foot issues at all. Made all his extensive walking easy. And any shoe that can get you through both the Dallas and DC airports in comfort is worth 5 stars.

I don't usually consider dropping this much on a pair of shoes a good investment, but the NB2040s are the exception to the rule. The quality of this shoe surpasses any other I've owned. After 6 weeks, they still look and feel new after use every single day. The biggest difference is the cushioning. They are also the the sharpest shoes I've ever seen.

These shoes are very comfortable, and quality definitely shows. I have a minor issue with the tongues sliding down, but that seems like it could be a personal problem. No complaints, and I stand in them for 10 hours a working day.
