These are the best sneakers I have owned. They are a pleasure to wear. The mesh on top is extremely breathable, so that occasionally I can feel the air on my toes as I walk. This actually seems to keep the shoes smelling nice much longer.

Probably the best made all-around running/walking shoe you'll ever own. If you're a fan of NB shoes that offer the highest level of comfort and support - this is it.

Everyone likes to buy nice things for themselves so this why they might buy a steak. In my humble opinion this shoe is one of those purchase. It's really expensive so it must be better and I want the best! This is what marketers know about us. That said it's a nice shoe, very comfortable and stylish until the leather starts to get worn but it doesn't feel that much better to justify the price in my opinion. I am not unhappy I bought these pricey shoes but I wouldn't do it again. I still like my less expensive NB 990's better.

I was expecting a lot more from New Balance's top of the line shoe and considering the price of these, I don't think it wrong of me to have high expectations for these shoes. The quality and craftsmanship is undeniably excellent but the comfort is subpar. I could not imagine running a marathon in these; too heavy and too many better products out there for doing so. As far as comfort and cushion goes, these don't come close to my Air Max. As far as the styling goes, you're not going to win a fashion contests with these on but then again these shoes are not made for looks or to go down the runway with. But then again, for the money of these I don't think it too much to ask for something a little more stylish. Overall these are decent shoes. In no way are they worth the cost. But if you're dead set on getting New Balance's best and an American made shoe, then spend away.

Great shoe, great for support, and style (Zappos needs to carry the black version). For NB if you are reading this, Price is too high (how about $190?), and the tongue slips over and down to the outside. Fix the tongue and I will buy a couple more pairs at a lower price (I have heard this complaint elsewhere).

This is a different type of running shoe, an expensive one as well. You could spend considerably less on a foreign pair that in my opinion will have significantly more instant noticeable cushion. I've had the Asics excel-gel33 for the past 3-4 months and they've already died. The M2040 product itself has better craftsmanship and quality, hands down. And, I'm certain I will get more miles out of these than the foreign made pair. The arch support lacks slightly. I'm going to give this shoe a good degree of testing (running/gym) before I totally disregard it as overpriced. It is one of those shoes, had I tried it on compared to maybe 5 or 6 other pairs I'd probably dismiss it as overpriced.

These astounding M2040's cost more than double any shoe I ever purchased. I didn't expect them to be twice as good but there was a lot at stake. The look great and are extremely well made. Unfortunately my 990 2E's are wider than these 4E's. Just too narrow for me. Also shoes is so well made that it is too warm. And it was really hard to get the laces through the eyelets. The box is also classy. Great looking, well made, but not for me at any price and especially over $400 (with tax).

This pair of sneakers are okay but not great. I think it may have been a defective right shoe that seems to have a bump on the right side at the mid point. I will try another pair, but for this price this should be much better. It might be my feet as many shoes hurt lately.

Full leather uppers and serious padding mean these are too warm for me! Even just sitting at a desk and walking around the house they were so warm that my feet were prickly hot and very uncomfortable. Also, I ordered the 10 EE, which have always fit me well in the NB 99x shoes, but these are definitely cut a bit narrower. Too bad - I really wanted to like them as they look great and are very well made. Just too darned warm for anything but cold - weather wear, and too expensive to not feel perfect.

I love the look and that they are made in the USA, but the fit didn't work for me so these are going back. I'm super bummed. A 8 4E in New Balance usually fits my funny shaped feet like a glove, but these were a bit narrow and the sides of my foot/toes were rubbing and at this price I wasn't going to settle. The length was perfect. I also wish they had a bit more cushioning to match all the support. I should have ordered three pair of the 2000s back in the day when they were around, because those were the bomb! Oh well, I tried.

I have been a NB customer for many years and wondered, like other reviewers, what could be done for this price in a sports shoe. This shoe is without question the best looking and best made NB shoe I have come across. But NB ruined it, in my opinion, in their zealousness in promoting made in USA products. The exposed tongue above the laces is a royal blue with a white new balance and red USA and this looks like a flag of sorts. Really ruins an otherwise great looking shoe. If the designers had done the same thing in subtle, color coordinated stitching like they did on the 812, the shoe would be about perfect. I reluctantly returned the shoes for this reason and will watch if the designers get their act together in the next version. I would re-order in a heartbeat if they did.

I bought these shoes expecting excellent quality, and then some, due to the extra cost I was paying because of the U.S. New Balance product surcharge and attention to detail one would imagine goes into these shoes. What I got was about three months of use of an excellent shoe until they began to smell like friction modifier that goes into a limited-slip differential of an automobile. Some reviews of a different New Balance shoe have called it a "cat pee smell." I bought these shoes July 9, 2013 and thought I was losing my mind; and that I had done something to ruin them. I haven't been near friction modifier in 15 years since my days of owning Mustangs and Camaros, and that is the only reason I knew what it smelled like. I have tried full-strength vinegar to get the smell out of the soles of the shoes, even going so far as to wash the shoes in the washing machine with a high concentration of bleach, ruining the finish of the shoes; but nothing will get the smell out. If I hadn't stumbled upon the other reviews of some other mid to high-end New Balance products and found that glue degradation is the culprit, I would never have known. Time to find a new brand for my very wide feet. What a shame. Money wasted. I have been wearing New Balance for decades. This is my first (very) negative experience.

I have worn these shoes for several months now and they continue to did into my ankle bone. The piece of material which has the first shoelace holes dig into my ankles and have never softened or gotten less painful. Besides this they are fine but I feel like a fool for paying this price.

Bought NB_2040 in June of 2013. I would like to point out that these shoe have very unreliable soles. Literally, in less than three months or even less they started detaching. I think the price is to high for 2040 model. Also, I found out that they are a little bit heavy for me.
