I love these boots. I bought them to hike Machu Picchu and did not have to break them in at all. I normally wear a size 8 shoe but 8.5 athletic shoe. The size 8 Ahnu was short in the toe but the 8.5 was just perfect, with room in the front for swelling or hiking down hill. There boots are awesome. Also, they are the best looking, most urban styled hiking boot out there.

So I'm a solid size 8, I ordered an 8.5 off of reviews which were completely valid. These are light weight and super comfortable boots. I have hiked scree and talus fields with ease in these boots. They are my go-to winter hiking boot as they keep my feet crazy warm. The ONLY downside is one I found today. Monsoon season has just hit the mountains, I took out my trusty boots and went for an 11 mile hike. condensation was still abundant on the flora to the sides of the trail but no puddles. Tacky track but not muddy and no standing water. despite those details, my feet were soaked through and through. These boots actually held water IN them. So use caution. I would say these are perfect for winter for sure and every dry season hike you would want to take, but to be weary of wet conditions, despite the fact that i was not tromping through streams/puddles/the ocean....my feet were absolutely drenched.

Love the boot and my first hike of the season was comfortable the entire way from start to finish! And they look good for a hiking boot! So many styles are clunky and chunky and this one is not. Yay Ahnu!

I am so appreciative of others who take time to write thoughtful reviews. I read them. Previously purchased the Ahnu Placer boot (size 9 on a whim, which worked) for my first northern Minnesota winter. Love them. Realized that if I was gonna be in boots for at least 6 months, I need a second pair. I have a beloved pair of Ecco, gortex and leather boots that served well in the woods of northern California but they are lacking traction on snow and ice. I wear a size 8 in most shoes, but I ordered a half size up in this boot - the Montara - as reviewers suggested. I wore them outdoors today in minus 17 degree weather. Medium weight wool socks fit well inside the spacious toe box that provides lots of wiggle room. There is room for heavier socks as needed. The boot height is good...laces snug but remains comfortable. The two top shoe lace 'hooks' make it easy to snug up the boot. I sometimes require an orthotic, and while the arch support in this shoe isn't 'excellent', it offered plenty of support today. I suspect one could insert an orthotic if wanted. Excellent traction today in snowy and icy parking lots. Feet were warm. I wore this boot for 4-5 hours and it was comfortable first time out. The 'winetasting' color is just that - the color of an old vine zinfandel. And the plaid lining just makes me smile when I put them on and take them off. :)

I loved this boot - it's absolutely lightweight, lovely colors, and comfortable. But for me, they rolled too much to the inside. I need more arch support so had to return.

The shoe is nice overall. It's well built, looks nice (I have the blue) and keeps the dirt and water out nicely. I bought these shoes because I needed something better for practicing search and rescue with young dogs (the tend to step on your feet and kick up a lot of dirt) and for that they work fine in our windy dry terrain. I like the boots, but they were not comfortable out of the box at all. After breaking them in they felt better, but there is little padding under the ball of the foot so after a while it gets a painful. The dogs step on them, the leather tends to hold onto dirt, so you can see paw prints, not a big deal for me, but it's a little annoying. All in all they are a good purchase, they got very high reviews everywhere I searched and despite there downfalls the issues I have with them are fairly easy to fix. Also be sure to order at least half a size up, I wear a 8.5-9 and had to return my first pair (9) because it was painfully small. The pair I have now is a 9.5 and it's much better.

So good looking. I only wish they were as comfortable. The foot bed was very hard, even with cushy inserts. Other than that, foot bed had a nice shape to it and plenty of arch support (in fact, inserts with more arch support would not work because arch support was already quite high, which I love). They are so beautiful, I really wanted to keep them, but could not make them comfy even for standing in my kitchen for any length of time, so they won't work for hiking. Oh well. Back to my old, well-worn Merrells, which look scruffy, but still feel awesome.

I love the look, style and the leather. There is not enough support in the forefoot, I could feel the ground in the house; the arch support was less than supportive, my foot fell inward even tied tightly. Cannot recommend if you need arch and ankle support. Great looking boot Ahnu, but it needs a stablizer in the heel and arch. Thank you.

I've been an enthusiastic daily wearer of these boots for about five years, since they're perfect for my job. I appreciated the support, durability, and roomy toe box. When I ordered my most recent pair I was disappointed to see that the forefoot has become narrower and tighter. I held a new boot and an old one sole-to-sole: the new pair's soles are nearly a quarter inch narrower than the old pair. Additionally the laces on the new boots were barely long enough to knot once. It's a pity.

I bought a pair of these (not from Zappos) and then hiked for 3 days. After Hike #1 my ankles were becoming bruised, so I experimented with tightening and relaxing the tie. By Day 3 I was trying to hike with the two top eyelets unlaced and every step hurt, especially downhill. The problem is the ankle cuff is too high and has no give, so every down hill step pushes the top of the boot into the back of your leg. On Day 4 I returned them. Foot bed and look was great, so in the store they seemed fine, but on the trail, very problematic. Back to Lowas for life!

These are very attractive, comfortable light weight hiking boots which are described as waterproof. Unfortunately, I have had 3 pairs now and all 3 have leaked in the forefoot area. The first pair started leaking after about 6 months of wear (I wear them average of 1.5 hours per day for dog walking and occasional hiking through gravel, streets, sandy paths, grassy areas, we live in a rural area). Zappos very kindly replaced that pair for me, as we assumed it was a defective pair. The second pair lasted only about 5 months before leaking through, as in puddle under the ball of my foot. I tried on some other boots to replace them but they just weren't as comfortable for me, so I ordered another pair of the Ahnus in a different color and current year's model, in the hopes they had improved waterproofing. This pair I'm sending back today as they leaked the second day that I wore them! The tops of both of my feet were saturated after a 1/2 hour walk in the rain… These are great boots if you just need a light hiker, but they are NOT waterproof as Ahnu claims. I really do wish that they were!

I wore these boots on a two day hike in Colombia through Cano Cristales. I hiked through dirt, rocks and the river and my feet were comfortable and stayed dry the entire time! Definitely a nice looking hiking boot too which is hard to find! I will definitely be using these on my next hike!

Very cute boots with great arch support. They are a little tight in the front, but otherwise comfortable with thin socks. I am a size 11 (never smaller) and once I put in thick socks, these felt at least a half size too small. If there was a size 12 available I'd be sold.

I read that these boots were comfortable right out of the box, so I was a little disappointed when I put them on. They felt stiff. But I wore them around the house for a couple hours, and guess what...they ARE comfortable right out of the box. I've put a few miles on them the last couple days, and they provide good support, warmth, and keep your feet dry. I'm happy. Thanks as always to Zappos for the fast delivery.

I absolutely love these shoes. I did a 7-mile hike with these shoes straight out of the box. Not usually a smart move, but they did not disappoint. I also hiked the Inca trail with them, and along the way met someone wearing the same pair who also bragged about how great the shoes were. My sister bought a pair after I raved about them and she loves her pair too. I have been through mud and rain with these and they have kept my feet dry. If you plan to wear thick socks, you may want to go a 1/2 size up. With thicker socks, I loosen the shoe laces a bit or it feels snug.

I love these boots! I wear a medium width and these fit fine. I did, however, purchase a half size larger than normal--I normally wear a 10, but ordered a 10.5, and I am glad I did. My toes do not hit the end of the boot, and I can easily wear a thick sock without having the boots feel too tight. I think if I had ordered a 10, they might have felt too small. The foot bed is very comfortable and supports my foot well. Since I have flat feet, the moderate arch support works well for me--I cannot speak to how well they would work for someone needing stronger arch support. I have had these boots for a few days and have worn them several times--two days in the rain. My feet stayed dry and did not sweat. I was also happy with the padding around and above the ankles--the boots are really comfortable and after the first few minutes, I forgot I had on boots that come up above my ankles. They are also relatively light considering they are boots--they do not feel at all clunky. I ordered the amethyst boots and the color is a little less "purple" than the photo shows, and the accents/laces are a teal green that go well together. I have gotten several compliments. All in all, great boots!

I've had 2 pairs of this same boot in 7.5 and this pair was too tight on top of my pinky toe.

I ordered 3 different Ahnu hiking boots, I wanted a boot that was waterproof, warm, comfortable, and cute. The Montara boot fit all my requirements right out of the box. It hugs my foot, I can wear my orthotics and a medium weight sock. Wisconsin gets cold and snowy so will look forward to wearing these to walk the dogs, but they're also cute enough to wear all the time...love the green color. I may have to buy another color, I normally wear a 10.5 but looking at the reviews ordered an 11 and they are a perfect fit

I got a pair of these (in amethyst smoke) for my trip to Iceland because I knew I was going to be doing lots of hiking there and will need a pair of good boots, and these were perfect! I really liked the color, and more importantly, they were super comfy, didn't need any breaking in at all. The grip was great - I hiked through plenty of uneven, rock terrains with no problem. My only tiny complaint are the laces - because they are round, they can loosen a bit after a while, even with a double knot. And if you don't tie a double knot, the laces will definitely untie. However, this issue can be easily fixed by switching out the laces for some flat ones. I usually wear a size 7.5 in shoes and I actually sized down for these and got a 7, and that fit me perfectly, even with thicker hiking shoes.

I love these boots! I have narrow heels and have put up with ill-fitting men's boots for years, because it was so hard to find women's boots bigger than Size 10. The Size 11 is perfect, will even allow for heavy socks in colder temps. I love Zappos! I had a problem with a BB-sized lump under the lining poking my ankle bone, and Zappos replaced them at the same sale price, wow! Nice color selectiom, but I chose black. Very supportive and confortable, no break-in time.

Fits like a glove from moment I put it on. Thanks to Zappos I tried 7 different hiking boots from keen, timberland and Columbia. They were fine and felt ok but as soon as I put this Ahnu on it was soooo perfect. Soft inside and tongue integrated so it doesn't fall to side. Most importantly a Cush to your walk. I walked 5 miles today and 4 miles on other days. I forgot I had on boots because so comfortable. These are great great hiking boots. And they look good with jeans.

OMG! I was in disbelief at how many glowing reviews this boot had. As a skeptic, I figured they were fake. However, I figured I'd give these a try anyway, they are returnable, right? Well, I walk A LOT for excercise, minimal 5 miles/day. I trekked these around my kitchen for 20 minutes straight without any irriation, so I thought they were safe to keep. I have now worn these the past two days throughout the work day and walked about 7 miles/day. No pain, no rubbing, no discomforts. I love them! I was afraid to show my husband the price, but now that I have worn them I will say they are well worth every penny. Can't wait to take them on vacation in a few days. Very lightweight, I live in a super hot climate and they aren't too hot. Nice materials, and not super bulky looking. I am petite, and wanted comfort, without them being super gawky looking. I think I found a winner. Also, I ordered my normal size, a 6 1/2 and they fit great. I did not size up as some people suggested, they do seem to have stretched very slightly with wear.

Great right out of the box! The quality of workmanship is evident when you first set eyes on them, but the feel and function won me over!

This is my second pair of Montana hiking boots. I've finally worn out my first pair but will use them for work around the property. No break in needed these boots fit my narrow foot like a glove with excellent arch support. At seventyone hiking is still my favorite experience and thanks to these boots I have many more years to comfortably hike on.
