You all have a piece of gear that takes you back to yesteryear. My original Peruvian hat with Windstopper is one of those pieces. I bought it in 1995 as a graduate student when dollars were scarce. It served me admirably for 25 years. About 6 years ago the layers of fleece on the inside delaminated. I wore it inside out mostly under a cycling helmet for the last 6 or so years. This year I saw this new Peruvian (after not seeing an OR Peruvian for several years) and got it. It is flat out better than the original, warmer and more breathable while being lighter. It is a special kind of alchemy they have achieved!! I'll buy another even if it only lasts me 12 years!!

I bought it for scuba diving! Frankly, after getting out of the water and taking my hood off in cold weather my head would freeze so I tried this and couldn't be happier. It retains heat and keeps my wet hair warm. The only drawback is everyone laughs when I have a steaming head if I take it off. I also use it for bike riding below 50F it keeps my ears, neck, and head warm under my helmet.

I bought this for backpacking, hoping that the over the ear coverage would be convenient in my sleeping quilt and keep my ears warm on cooler summer nights and mornings. I have used it a few times on winter hikes and it has done well, and I wore it while camping in sub-freezing temps and it kept my head and ears perfectly warm down to 15 degrees, and it was in fact a little warm. It is not the most stylish hat ever, but it works as advertised.

I've had mine since 2015. It was a smart purchase. I bought it to block the wind and to keep my ears warm while hiking 14ers. This hat did just that. It packs well and is always in my packs where ever I hike. I do a lot of winter biking and it fit perfectly under my bike helmet. Just recently I lost/misplaced it. I need to get another one fast. This hat will make your head warm. When your head is warm, you hike happy. Enjoy it and happy hiking.

This is a great choice for a surprisingly warm and windproof hat for anyone with an enormous melon like myself. Function first style second...you looking at me! Buy it, you'll love windblown doggie walks with your girlfriend, finally!

This is an amazing hat for keeping warm in cold windy weather. The wind-stopper fleece will slightly muffle sound when the ear flaps are pulled down, but it is very effective at preventing heat loss from your head. It's surprisingly effective given how thin it is. I often wear it with the ear flaps over the tips of my ears but the strap tied above my head so I can hear clearly, but will pull the ear flaps down and tie under my chin for very effective protection against bitter cold wind. Great for winter hiking or just snow-blowing my driveway on a windy day. A tremendously effective combination is to pair this with a fleece neck gator, making it an adjustable balaclava. You can rotate the neck gator portion when it gets moist from breathing to present a new dry breathing area. The hat can be pulled up a bit to vent when working hard, then pulled down to keep heat in during a break.

Excellent hat for winter hiking. It is lighter than my other windstopper hats and dried better after exertion but still kept me warm. I have used it in single digits with my shell/hood and have been very comfortable. Best used while exerting, either skiing or climbing.

It's definitely not the most stylish hat OR carries. However its function is great! This hate is for those nasty winter winds or when one beanie just won't do, you can layer this easily. It blocks wind well, I noticed the ear flaps kind of dampen sound as well. It's pretty soft and it's bee.n very useful.

Nothing can protect your head and ears from gnarly cold and wind like this hat. The material is thick and impenetrable. The shape hugs your head with great coverage. I use this for any winter days when a beanie just won't cut it. It doesn't look the coolest, but that doesn't matter if I'm playing in the snow. I usually wear it as a baselayer anyways. It hides perfectly under a big slouchy beanie- and then you're even cozier!

So, I know the product OR Pro quite well so I knew I could trust this brand. I am shocked at how warm, (maybe too warm?) And we'll fitting this hat is. I ordered a medium, but ended up exchanging it for a small. Maybe it's just because I have an odd shaped head? I digress. Today is the first day in have had it up on the ski hill and holy crap! It's beyond my expectations. I highly recommend this hat to anyone looking for a thin, over the ear with a chin strap. It works flawlessly! If you don't have one, get one!

There's nothing else like that for cycling in the winter (I guess "urban commuting", Brooklyn, you know...). With a polartec power stretch and gore-tex hoods over it it's still slim enough to fit under a large helmet. Looks great, too, when you don't need the hoods... One of the best winter accessories ever designed. Period.

Anyone who has ever used Gore Windstopper material will know that this material is not the soft high pile snuggly fleece. It is fairly thin and does not provide a tremendous amount of insulation. However, with the right fit and during a workout, it does an amazing job of keeping the wind from cutting into you. I used this hat for the first time today on a short climb (4,000 vertical). It was about 15 degrees at the trailhead and 6 degrees on top. I used a beanie for the ascent and didn't use this hat until I reached the top. While I will say that my head was not really cold, it wasn't super warm either. It think this is because it is a little loose on my head. Had I sat around for long, it would have gotten colder. If I put a small fleece beanie underneath, it will be bombproof and totally warm. It is very well made with comfortable seams and it is shaped perfectly for a good fit to cover the ears and forehead.

This is a great hat! I am a carpenter in Minnesota, where the weather is extreme and unpredictable. I bought a similar Outdoor Research hat several years ago and wore it out, and could not find a replacement - until I visited the Outdoor Research store in Seattle, where they had this hat, although not in my size. What I like about the hat is that it is very compact for its warmth; I can fold it up and leave it in a pocket without much bulk. It is pretty well windproof. It has got a chin strap which can be used to either hold the ear flaps down tight when it's really blowing, or to hold the flaps up on top of the hat when it is not so cold. I was not too excited about the big gray "OR" on the front, but I just took a black permanent marker and colored the embroidery thread black.

This is a great hat when hiking in cold and windy conditions. It keeps my head and ears warm, which is what I want it to do. If there is light to medium rain (or it's sunny) than I cover it with my OR Drifter Gore Tex hat. If it's heavy rain than I add my rain jacket hood. It's not really stylish (to me) but a warm head when hiking is what I want and this hat delivers.

For years, I wore a similar Gore-Tex Wind Stopper hat from another manufacturer. The cord lock on that hat was a large, barrel style, unlike the smaller & flatter cord lock on the OR Peruvian Hat. This may not seem like a deal breaker, but a large cord lock that puts pressure against the neck is not desirable. This hat is worn at least 90 minutes every day during cool & cold weather - roughly 4-5 months each year. For such a lightweight & thin hat, the wind protection is incredible. During blizzard conditions, a knit sock cap can be layered over the Peruvian Hat for additional warmth. Folded up, it stores in a tiny space. And it looks great while being worn.

Really liked the way the earflaps tightened down to keep the wind out and my ears warm. The hat is too tight on my size 8 head. Had to return it.
