My new Frye Melissa Button Boots are my most comfortable shoes. I recently had a hip replaced and I feel unbalanced in any boot or shoe with a heel. So after searching for the perfect boot to replace my older riding boots, I purchased these. The first time I wore them, it was a 12 hour day and my feet felt great. I owe this purchase to my friend Victoria as she purchased them first. I searched for 3 weeks following Christmas to find these boots, thank goodness Zappos had them back in stock. They weren't the exact black I wanted, but I love them just the same. I am a Frye boot and shoe believer forever.

I love these boots! The leather is beautiful and they are super comfortable. A bit stiff at first but easily broken in within one wear. I have average size calves and they fit perfectly over leggings or skinny jeans. I have several Frye boots and these run the same as the others as far as size. They keep their shape and don't slouch.

I finally took the plunge after years of wanting these and bought them in cognac. I am usually a size 8, but followed some advice from reviewers and got them in 7.5. They are extremely difficult to get on and off (the top of my foot literally just would not go in any further into the boot!); however, they proved easier with nylon trouser socks to help my foot slide in. They are tight across the tops of my toes on one foot and hurt. They are also tight on my calf (I'm 14" at my widest) and when teamed with jeans they stick and bunch up around my ankles. I am undecided about how these will look once truly 'broken in.' The color is very nice and the quality is lovely. I think they are just not for everyone.

This review is for the Frye Melissa Button, no zipper, in a 7.5. I've worn them maybe 10 times and they are just starting to break in. Overall I am very happy. Some considerations: Width: I have narrow feet and they are still tight around the arches and little toe. If you have high arches or wide feet, these will probably not work for you. Putting them on: these boots are INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to put on and take off at first. The pull tabs are essential, but it's still a pretty comical affair--yanking and wiggling and grunting. You don't want to do this in public, trust me. It seems to be getting easier as they break in. Tread: the soles are leather with a rubber heel and they have are very smooth. OK on pavement, grass, brick, and cobbles, but on smooth tile and ice it gets pretty slippery. Height: I wanted flat boots and these pretty much fit the bill. They don't make my back hurt the way higher heels do. Misc: they do make a satisfying clicking noise on hard surfaces.

Just as the description! They are gorgeous. They are not as comfortable as I anticipated based on reviews but maybe I have not broken them in yet. Fast shipping as always with zappos.

Very stylish and comfortable boots. My only problem has been getting them over my ankles. I've worn them only a few times so hope that they will stretch so that I can get them on easily.

I have grown to adore these shoes but they were hard to get on at first. I ordered an 8.5, I usually wear an 8. I think Frye boots in general run a little small. But after breaking them in a little they are very comfortable, I personally can fit my pants in them and they look great with everything.

I got the Melissa buttons in cognac. I am 5 feet tall and they are just the right height. They are super high quality leather. I had no problem slipping the boot on, I know there has been other reviews where that was an issue. Plenty of room to tuck pants in, I can't wait to wear them out! Only drawback is that the sole is smooth. I'll have to get a non skid sole to put in the bottom. So, for that reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. I do believe they run a 1/2 size large. I am usually a 5.5-6 the 6 was huge. My heel lifted and I immediately sent them back. You want them to be snug to prevent chafing, but loose enough you don't get sores. As always, Zappos is great with returns an exchanges. I tried 2 pairs of Frye boots before finding my 'true love' with these. Why buy shoes anywhere else?

I ordered my usual size, 9.5 and they were really roomy and floppy. A half size smaller felt really narrow and constricting but I decided to give them a go and they did stretch enough to wear thinner socks. I'm hoping by next winter I'll be able to cram in my usual Smartwool socks. A sales clerk told me that Frye runs big and not to buy my usual size because they'd feel like boats. Glad I listened and avoided a sloppy fit. Love the fawn color. Goes with everything.

My heel slipped so much in these I had to return them. I wear an 8, sometimes a 7.5, and bought these in an 8 because my foot is quite wide and I have a very high instep. Boots went on like a charm and were comfortable in width, just too long in the toe box. I could have lived with that if not for huge heel slippage. Cute boot, I got the fawn which is an olive color.

I've always wanted a pair of Frye boots. Unfortunately I have to send these back. My heel slips out when I walk and I can't go to a narrow because it fits perfectly on the rest of my foot. So sad.

I splurged for a pair of red Carson's last year so I expected this boot to be just as fabulous. The leather wasn't even close to being as soft but the color (natural brush off) is amazing (just like the picture) and style is what I've always been looking for. Very casual but chic. The sizing does run large but I think they'll be too small if I size down. I plan on adding a foot cushion inside anyway as the heel area has a bulge that can felt that's a bit annoying. I'm 5'2 and the height is just fine, it doesn't reach my knee like other shorties said. I have larger calves and it will be a struggle, if not nearly impossible, to fit jeans inside. It will only work if they stretch some. I wouldn't have even thought about buying them anywhere other than Zappos - they are always wonderful.

This boot is very classy but also casual looking. I am 5'3 and have athletic calves (14), and there is definitely no room for anything other than the skinniest of skinny jeans or tights. It is also extremely difficult to get the boot on and off, but the 7.5 size feels like an 8 in any other shoe so it won't work to get a bigger size in order to get more calf room in the boot. This boot feels like it will last forever! Once it's on, its very very comfortable. The hard part is just getting them on and off. Hopefully they will stretch out a little bit.

Finally the search for the perfect boot is over! I wanted a high quality boot with a timeless style that I could also actually go horseback riding with. Well, I haven't ridden with them yet but I plan to and I think these will work and will clean up well for regular wear. I have a really hard time finding boots because I have pretty thin calves. These fit perfectly over skinny jeans and maybe even with tights. A little gap but something I might be able to have taken in if the shaft stretches at all. I have tried the Frye Harness boot in the past but ended up selling them on eBay because I just couldn't break them in. The Melissa Button was much softer and more flexible. The toe box feels a little tight but I wore them all day today...even on an easy walk/hike in the woods and they felt very comfortable. I am usually a size 10 or 11 (probably a true 10.5 although very few shoes come in that size). I ordered the 9.5 and they seem to be just right. If I got the 10 I worry they would end up stretching too much but I felt that the 9.5 would end up perfect after a brief break in period. I love the Cognac color too. A really nice, medium brown. Not too red. Yes, the bottom is a little slippery. But I like the leather soles and they do get roughed up with wear. There is also some heel slip but it is my understanding that it's normal for boots like this. I don't find it uncomfortable but I do like wearing clogs so maybe it's me! I didn't have too much trouble getting them on either as others mentioned. They need a little shove but no major struggle. Good luck in your boot shopping. I recommend giving these a shot. They are really gorgeous!

Better looking in person! So happy that I pulled the trigger on my first pair of Frye's. I have thinner calves and these boots fit perfectly and do not gap at the top, though with enough room for skinny jeans. Buy them; you won't regret it!

They are fabulous. It did take three tries to get the correct size. I read other reviews and ordered one size smaller. I usually wear a 9.5 but ordered a 9. Unfortunately because they are pull on, I just could not get them on. I reordered a 9.5, then one foot felt larger than the other. I was determined to have these boots, so I ordered them one more time. Like they say, "3 times the charm." They are perfect and I can't wait for the weather to change.

I've been wanting a new pair of boots forever and I've always liked Frye's styles. They do run probably half a size bigger and they're more narrow than I thought they'd be. They are also slightly loose in the ankle. Despite the fact that these boots probably are slightly too tall for me, I kept them. They are quality boots, leather and make. Color and style are great, you can wear them with jeans and skirts. I'm about 5'2 and the boots don't look funny on me but they would look perfect if they were 1/2 an inch shorter. Shorter people can still pull them off. You really can't beat the quality.

Loved the way they looked online and in the box-but when I put them on and looked in the mirror I kept thinking "rubber gardening boots". Just couldn't get past that. The fit was good except for the arch support, which was at the back of my arch instead of the middle of it. Kind of dissappointing for all the hoopla over Frye boots.

I have read a lot of great reviews about Frye's shoes and today I got my first pair. What a disappointment. The leather is stiff and cheap looking. You really feel the stitches once your feet are inside the boots and it is very uncomfortable. There is no traction on the bottom of the shoes, and it can be very slippery situation. I was so looking forward to these boots, but I have to return them.

A couple of notes on this boot: the arch was high (I guess I have flat feet). The boot is kind of flappy at the ankles. I'm willing to forgive this in taller boots, but shorter ones look too squatty. Also, the antique grey is brown like the picture suggests. Don't hope for grey boots!

I love Frye boots and own several pairs, all a size 7. I ordered the Melissa button in a 7 and I am swimming in it. Also, the leather does not seem as nice as the leather on the Veronica Slouch.

This boot looks like something from a John Wayne movie, that old and that rustic. If this is the look you want, this is the boot for you. Very broken-in look. (hence the style 5 stars.) They scratch up easy. The surface looks like it will flake off. I wore these boots around the house and scuffed up the bottom of the boot so they are my expensive boots to go to the barn in. Great boots for horse riding. I have a 7.5 foot and ordered the 8 and need to wear Smart Wool socks. These boots would look great with anything jean.

I've wanted to get a pair of Frye boots for a long time, but couldn't decide on which style. The classic look of these finally won me over, and I'm glad I took (the costly) plunge. The leather is extremely soft, inside and out, and the padded foot bed is extremely comfortable. I can see myself wearing these for many winters to come. The calf area is just the perfect amount of snug, they help hold pants down if I tuck them in, and I can still wear leggings, socks, tights, etc comfortably underneath.
My number one warning to those considering buying these boots is that you are going to have to spend more money to get them resoled immediately. The leather bottoms are extremely slippery and the rubber heel part does nothing. If you aren't prepared to spend more on these boots, do not buy them. You can not wear them with the soles as is or you'll be slipping all over even if the surface is not wet or is rough. I'm not sure why Frye makes them with the leather soles; they get scratched up immediately, but it does nothing to help with traction.
I also recommend buying the Frye cream to condition them. It works great on other leather shoes as well.

I took the advice of another reviewer and ordered a half size smaller. They fit! However, they were extremely hard to get on. I took the advice of another reviewer and put plastic baggies over my feet to pull the boot on. Once they are on, they are very comfortable. They were a little snug in the width. Recommend a wider size if you have wide feet. But, I just don\'t like the way they look. The toe is discolored to make it look worn. I don\'t like that. They are not very flattering on me. They don\'t have that slimming effect like my other boots. Maybe it\'s the v-shape top. For me to spend this much money, they would have to be perfect, so I am returning them.
