This is the new version of the mini-mass and Patagonia addressed all the issues I had with the older version. External buckles hold the front of the bag tightly closed. There is a pocket outside on the back for plane tickets or a paper. Inside is a zip pocket on the back, plus organizer pockets on the front including a securing slip pocket for a cell phone. The outside water bottle pocket is taller, so the bottle doesn't slip out. I can fit wallet, two pairs of glasses, cosmetic bag, tissues, and a scarf or light rain jacket inside. And my iPad fits perfectly. Now if they'd just make the strap nonslip, it would be perfect. As a cross body bag, it already is.

Love this bag! I wore it for two weeks on a trip to Italy and Greece. It carried a water bottle, point and shoot camera, guide book, passport copies, notebook, 2 iPhones, wallets, etc etc etc! The only downside was that if I really loaded it up, it would sometimes hurt my shoulder. That's when I would give it to my husband to wear. We purposely chose this bag because it looked "unisex." There was no way that he was going to want to carry something that looked like a purse. I wish the shoulder strap was padded, but other than that, it did everything we wanted.

I really like this bag. I use this as a purse, not for computers. I bought this bag to a Mountainsmith satchel I got years ago and this one avoids all the problems that irked me about my other bag. The back side has a stiffish padding that helps to keep it upright, so it sits better, combined with the fact that it us deep so my items will not fall out. The way the pockets are organized I can find things much easier. It is not a black hole, which happens often with my other purses. I have read in other reviews that it bothers some people that there is no padding on the strap. I for one do not find this an issue. The bag is small enough you really will not be putting things of size/weight in there. And you do not have to constantly slide/adjust a pad every time you put it one. That was a huge annoyance with my last bag. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I bought this bag to take on a 2 week Europe trip with my husband- we wanted a bag that would carry a guidebook, water bottle, a couple documents, a point and shoot camera, sunscreen, etc. I also wanted something that he wouldn't mind carrying (i. e. it wasn't girly). This bag worked perfectly! It held everything we needed and it didn't look like a purse, so my husband didn't mind carrying it when my shoulders got tired. After 2 weeks of wear, my shoulders did start to hurt, despite swapping the bag between the two of us. A shoulder strap pad would have been nice.

I loved the look and feel of this bag. However, it does not fit my 18oz water bottle very easily. It's as if the slot is too shallow. I almost lost my water bottle twice. The design could do with a padded slider on the strap to make wearing more comfortable. The issues I mentioned were big for me. I don't want a bag hurting my neck and I don't want to feel like I'm going to lose my stuff. Cool colors though and seemed to be very well made.

I bought this for my daughter who is entering 4th grade this year and she loves it! It's the perfect size for her, not too big, not too small. She wanted a messenger bag and this is the perfect bag to begin school this year!

The color is more of a hot pink, but I love this bag. Very roomy for my iPad with case. Durable.

I love this bag! I actually bought it as a diaper bag for my husband and I'm going to get one for myself. It is the perfect size to carry shopping or to the beach. All the outer pockets make it easy to stash things in a hurry while more valuable things can be kept zipped up in the inner compartment. Color looks cool and since it's Pattagonia-it's very rugged and can stand getting beat up a bit by a family on the go.

Love this bag but hate the color choices. I was hoping to get a bag to carry my son's gear in that I could hand off to my husband, but other than black there is not a color here he would touch (or me for that matter)! A gray, tan or brown would be much better.

This really is a great little bag. Got back from the East Coast not too long ago, where I used the MiniMass every day. It lives up to its water repellent claim, though I wouldn't go any farther than "repellent." For example, water could potentially enter where the shoulder straps connect to the bag, though there is some overlap in fabric - not a problem in light rain. The water bottle pocket works well for small bottles/mugs, but is too short for larger ones, which could cause them to fall out. Finally, the straps that connect the flap to the bottom of the bag are adjustable, and plenty long enough to accommodate lots of expansion; however, there is no way to collect the excess strap when the bag is not full, so they just dangle down. It would have been nice, as CamelBak does on some of its packs, to include Velcro to coil up and hold the excess strap, or to have the excess strap attach to the rear of the bag. Otherwise, I've found the bag durable so far and a great size!

I purchased this bag for my husband who has difficulty keeping track of small personal items (ear buds, iPod, reading glasses, paperbacks) on long international flights. He says its just the right size for his stuff and the bright color is easy to see in dim airplane lighting. The smaller size works well; it's not as big and bulky as the usual messenger bags.

This is my go-to carry all bag. It\'s small enough to be cute and non-overwhelming on my frame, but large enough to stow an extra shirt, my DSLR and a water bottle in.

I really like this bag. But it's not as sturdy as I thought it'd be. I use it for school, and within a few days of putting my heavier books in it, I realized that the shoulder strap was starting to pull away and fray from the bag. It's a cool bag, but not extremely practical for what I had in mind for it. It doesn't fit a decent sized water bottle, and it can't hold all my school supplies. But it is super snazzy looking, and I still use it nonetheless.

This is exactly what my son said he wanted but when it arrived it was too small. Looks like a man purse. I returned it and got the larger one.

Wanted to add my voice you the chorus of fans of this bag. I am a 4'4" tall woman and most messenger bags are way too big on me, but I like the cross body style. I was looking for a good bag for a trip to Italy last October and I am so glad I gave this a try. It was perfect for travel and I use it every day now that I'm home, too. I carry to work every day: Water bottle and coffee cup (one outside and one inside), iPad with cord and a couple of folders of documents in the computer slot, 1 or 2 books, and a small tupperware of lunch. Plus all the stuff I would have in a small purse: wallet, phone, keys, small first aid kit, makeup pouch, sunglasses, pens, notepad, hand wipes. There are plenty of pockets and pouches to keep all that organized, and everything has a place. Plus I added a carabiner to the strap which usually just has a reusable shopping bag attached, but can be used for whatever. For air travel it fits under the seat with plenty of room for my legs as well. For a smaller person it really couldn't be better. Like everyone says, if you overload it the shoulder strap will dig in. But that's why it's good that it's so small: You can only put so much in it!

This is the best bag ever, I love it! I have to have pockets to organize myself or I go nuts and this bag actually has enough. I'm a doctoral student so I carry a backback (Burton Bruce, also awesome) but needed a shoulder bag so I could easily access my phone, keys, wallet, sunnies, lunch etc. This bag does the trick, and it's small enough to be like a purse rather than a messenger. Don't be put off by the price, it's totally worth it!

This is the best bag! Especially if you're tall and need the length for a cross-shoulder bag. It took me awhile to find a bag with the right length. This bag is perfect! And the quality of material is outstanding. Durable and reliable, this bag will go the distance. Highly recommend!

This is a great bag for a lot of reasons. Perfect for carrying and iPad or Kindle. Plenty of organizational pockets with dedicated pen storage. The light padding at the back and bottom make for a well constructed bag that doesn't lose its shape when set down. Great for travel when you have to have ID/Passport/Boarding Pass easily available. My husband likes mine so much he is getting one for himself. Nothing but praise for this product.

Zappos is the perfect, most generous retailer around. Patagonia messengers come in three sizes, L, M and S, but they call them Critical Mass, Half Mass and MiniMass. Compared to other makes, Patagonia are high quality and I like that they are featherlight and do not have heavy unpleasant vinyl inside. The handle up top is also great and I like the car seat belt shoulder strap. There is no need for an extra shoulder pad on a bag of this size. For a day bag, I picked the MiniMass. I am a 5'7" man and this bag, albeit smaller than most messengers, does not look unmanly (mine is black). A bag that is too large makes it hard to find things, so pick the smallest you can fit your largest item into. My 11½" MacBook Air fits in comfortably along with many other daily essentials. My CamelBak bottles fit fine inside the end pouch. This just may be the best bag I have owned, and I have bought and sold my way through a couple of dozen over time.

It's a stylish man bag as my husband calls it and is the perfect size to tote all of his belongings on the go. In fact, it fits an iPad perfectly.

The bag is awesome. Not a huge bag, but perfect to throw a bunch of stuff in as you run out the door...keys, phone, wallet, mail, some snacks, a book, etc. Great pockets for everything. This keeps me from looking like a yard sale when I walk into work, otherwise I would have to wear an under-filled backpack.

Using as a purse/diaper bag as we tradition out of diapers. Great size, holds my wallet, a few diapers, wipes, a few snacks and sunglasses. Lots of pockets with zippers for storage.

I am very pleased with this bag. It is the first Patagonia product that I have owned. I was worried about the size...but it turned out to be perfect. not too big and not too small. A shoulder pad would be great, but other than that it feels sturdy and there is plenty of room and really good organization. Love the Ash Tan color...wish I could find a half mass in it. I look forward to getting a lot of use out of this bag.
