Going to the Beach? Buy some sandals. The shoe doesn't stay on! There is no Ankle support. I tried to fix it with insoles but didn't help. It's like wearing sandals!

Way too big I have had this problem with Doc Martens before. When they size the length of the shoe, they size rest of the shoe proportionally. The human foot just does not work this way. I wear a US size 13. In this size the shoe is simply too big around. I have to tighten the laces all the way and even then it is LOOSE.

Comfortable, Great style, Wears forever I have owed this shoes for 12 years, it still looks great, it was my first pair of Dr Marten's,(I have since bought 6 more styles of Doc) most comfortable pair of shoes I have. I wear these shoes with everything, and everywhere. The price is reduced on Zappos, so you get a awesome value. The day after Chirstmas, I went on a job interview wearing these doc and got several compliments, and I got the job to!

Great Fit & Comfy, Too! From the first wearing, these shoes fit great, feel great & look great! They look as if they'd be heavy; they're not. They complement jeans and 'business casual' attire equally well. These shoes are a good value ... try a pair!

Great look, initially uncomfortable I've had these shoes for 11 months now, and they've really grown on me. Initially, they were quite uncomfortable: the back rim is angled inwards and was cutting through my socks and into my back ankle. I had to place a bandaid on my ankle for awhile, but after a few weeks, the rim opened up. They are now pretty comfortable. The black shoes look really nice with either jeans or slacks. I also have a pair of brown 8053s, which don't look quite as good, but the padded rims make them much more comfortable.

I bought a pair of 1461's about 3 years ago, and I admit the first couple of weeks were pretty rough, they cut the back of my feet, I was ready to give up on them, people said give them a chance to loosen up and I did, they have been my favorite pair of shoes ever since them, they have been with me through everything, from my last day of highschool, through all the parties, concerts. I even took them with me on my trip to england, I brought my sneaks and my 1461's, I initially slid on my addidas sneaks for, sight seeing but after a while my feet hurt, that night I put on my docs and my feet felt fine again. I am in my sophmore year of college with the same pair of docs and I still wear them all the time. They kind of stink for have had many sockless evenings. But until they are falling off my feat from wear and tear they are not going anywhere.

Unbelievably durable. My 1461s have been on my feet for most of the past 2.75 years. -Traveled with me through Eastern Europe, Canada, Iceland, the Left Coast ... and never a painful arch or sore toe. My constant companion through multiple body-piercings, drinking spectaculars, and rock concerts, my 1461 are unbelievably durable and obviously well-made. Buy a pair. You won't need any more shoes. Trust me.

Best Docs available This is simply the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. They look great, they're very comfortable and my last pair lasted for four years. I just purchased my third pair. Doc Martins rock but this pair is the very best.

SOFTENING This works for any shoe that rubs--put some Vaseline on it! Another trick is to put folded up tissues or something to raise your heel up a bit. It also helps to put Vaseline on your feet at any time you'll be walking a lot to prevent friction. Once the shoes are "broken" you won't need the Vaseline. In a pinch I've used hand cream--anything "greasy".

great versatile shoe. Look, the chicks have been dealing with painful shoes forever without whining! Fact is, if you actually wear them, they will break in nicely in just a few weeks. I wear these shoes every day and I have owned several, they are the best, most versatile shoes I have ever worn. If you want a fashion statement, try Rockport or Timberland or some other silly footwear.

I've been wearing docs for about 12 years and I was warry about getting another pair because of the pain and stiffness factor, but the 8053's with the greasy leather and padded collar were too much to resist. I got them and put an insert in them because they are a little too big, but now they fit like a fluffy marshmallow on my foot. I work in a restaurant and they can take a beating and wipe clean. I stepped on a large chunk of broken glass in the parking lot and I was sure glad I had those bad boys on. I think we will be working alot of shifts together. They look good with any outfit and will always be in style.

i dont have these but i tried them on and i know what everyone means about the back. i bought the 8053s and they're great because they have a padded collar, so they dont cut into your foot like the 1461s. other than the padded collar, they look the same as the 1461, so the 8053s may be better for you if the backs of the 1461s are bothering you.

Patience. I know most of the reviews include some type of pain story related to wearing Docs. Get over it. You spend the same money on other shoes that don't last half as long as Docs and the little bit of pain factor is worth it. Wear them a little bit at a time until you get used to them. Like all shoes, there will be some discomfort, but once they break in, you never will take them off. I know, I tried buying other shoes and eventually resorted back to Docs.

Love this shoe! Great shoe! My husband is a physician and wears his continuously. We bought this same shoe two years ago and broke them in walking around London. Haven't had any problems with the heels as some have had. I have narrow feet and without the 1/2 sizes I wear thicker socks with mine. I think the 1461 is a great classic looking shoe.

Love them!!!!! I love my docs. I have had about 3 or 4 pairs over the last 8 years and would not trade them for the world. I don't remember the ouch part of them. My husband had a hard time in the beginning though.

I only have slightly wider-than-normal feet, but these shoes are so narrow I had to get a full size larger which makes them a tad too long. Otherwise, great shoes.

OK let's come to the defense of the 1461! These are Great shoes, comfortable, value for money, ultra stylish. Never had a problem with wearing these in! Would suggest that anyone feeling a twinge of discomfort simply apply a plaster / band aid to the shoe in the corresponding area! I have probably gotten used to Docs footwear and never wear anything else. If you like the shoes you should try the boots - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Inner sole broke down in front. The sole inside the shoe under the toes broke down rather deep into some apparent void, leaving a sharp and very uncomfortable edge, about 5 mm away from the wall. They could not be used after that happened. I had used the shoes for about 2 years. They were far from worn down in any other respect at that time. Before this happened the shoes were great, though.

Love Em! I got my first pair of these 9 years ago, I still wear them contstantly. They have still not worn down. I got a replacement pair from Zappos.com this year for Christmas. I'll be keeping my old pair to kick around in too. About the Ouch factor: You really need a good two weeks of wearing them to break your feet in. Once you get to know Doc's, there usually is not a problem. My older ones feel like slippers now. One tip to break in the back of the heel, take them on and off without untying them. I know it sounds bad, but it does loosen them and makes the heel more flexible...

I love the (OUCH) way they look. I love these shoes. A classic. But the backs of my heels are raw. I can't believe I saw another review that said the same thing. I haven't tried to soften the back edge where it cuts into my foot for fear of ruining them. Anybody have ideas?....that have worked?

Ouch! My friend bought these shoes and said I just had to get a pair. Well I did, and Wow do they hurt the back of my heel! If I knew how to soften them up they would probably be my favorite shoes. But alas, I have scars from the one time I wore them and walked around campus! Ouch!
