These shoes are good. It is hard to find good shoes in the local stores anymore. I bought a pair of these shoes in 1996 and I still wear them to this day. They appear well worn but I like them so much I decided to get a new pair of the exact same shoe. I haven't worn the new pair too much but they seem like the original.

I bought my first pair of 1461s in 1990 and they lasted about six years. My first pair of 8-hole Doc boots held up for almost 15 years. These "vintage" Made In The UK 1461s? 10 months. For starters, the black polish doesn't hold. I can get a pro shine every 10 days and the leather creases will still turn brown. This NEVER used to happen. Cheaper leather? Heavy chemical treatment? Who knows? They also took about a month to break in, which I found odd. But more surprising was the fact that after less than a year of normal, day-to-day wear, the inner edge of the left shoe had a complete blow-out. The sole split (almost a total blow-out along the side, from front to back)), the leather separated... what a load of bollocks. UK-made or not, these are much lower quality than the Docs from the '90s. I'm hoping I just got a bad pair, but I won't be taking this gamble again at $160 a pop. Very, very disappointing.

I just got these Made in England Doc Martens and I love them just as much as I did when I was a kid! I don\'t know how the non-vintage docs are but these are exactly the way they were when I was in high school (I\'m in my 30\'s). Very good quality, very durable (they already survived a rain storm), and very stylish. And of course, they run big so order down a size. Oh, and thank you to Zappos for the best service of any internet company out there. You are second to none!

Well made, but not for uneven ground -- wish they made them in wide widths.

Bought these after a recommendation from a co worker. I work in sales and am on my feet 8hrs+ a day. They took about a week to break in. Definitely worth the price good quality construction and material.

I love these shoes. They look a little goofy at first, but they become beautiful once broken in. Get yourself some Kiwi Cordovan shoe polish; apply it liberally and often, as they break in. This will serve to temper their insane redness, leaving you with something closer to burgundy. This also adds some depth to the color; darkening them more intensely in places where the leather tends to crease. These are on the expensive side, so don't skimp on their care. Get a cedar shoe tree, and don't wear them more than every other day. Put the shoe tree in as soon as you take them off. I usually wear an 11.5 or 12 US, and am wide footed. I was going to order a UK 11, but only UK 12 was available. Another review said that these aren't great for those with wide feet, so I figured I'd try the UK 12, "maybe they'll fit even better." They were a little on the loose side, but with the Dr Martens insoles, this is less of a problem. They're quite comfy now. Width-wise they feel great; however my toes can barely reach the shoe's toe. This doesn't bother me much. Others have noted this shoes tendency to behave "like a flip flop." I find that this becomes less and less true as they break in and the toe develops some range of motion, and as I said, mine are on the looser side. I warn you though, this takes forever. Be patient though, it's worth it.

"Vintage" is the only way to go with Doc Marten's. They're pricey, but you can definitely tell the difference between these and the ones currently on sale. I have Docs that look new even though they're 15 years old. The most comfortable shoes I own.

These vintage Docs are very sweet! The quality of the construction is evident as soon as the shoes are pulled from the box. The sizing is spot on (something I was concerned about), and since my feet are narrow, I appreciate the fact that these Dr. Martens are not sloppy. However, people with wider feet may have an issue with the fit of the vintage Docs. But the real beauty of these shoes lies in their comfort. Wow, I don't remember Docs being this comfortable; I had several pairs in my younger years. Like the other reviewers have mentioned, the leather on these shoes will have to be broken in; it may take awhile. However, because of the air cushioned soles, they are comfortable right out of the box. It is important to me that any Dr. Martens on my feet are made in England. It is very cool to see the 'Made in England' stamp on the soles of the shoes; it means that they are real Docs. I understand that globalization compels most companies to cut costs, but to me, Docs that are not made in England seem, well, less than authentic. These bad boys were not cheap, but quality usually carries a heftier price tag. Although Docs will never go out of style, I like the fact that you rarely see them on people's feet anymore. For all of you fellow ska lovers, a vintage pair of Docs is a must. And, as a former district manager in the shoe business, I will say that I am very impressed with Zappos customer service; they know how to 'play the game' and they have certainly won my business.

Love this shoe. I am a big fan of Dr. Martens and have been wearing them for years. I ordered the same size as my other Docs, but these seem to run a bit small. I had to return them because I needed the next size larger.

These shoes take longer to break in than is believable. I'm a month into the process and I still can't wear them 2 days in a row, but every day they get better. They look marvelous and my legs feel good at the end of a day on my feet. Plan a long break in period. They are worth it.

I've been wearing Docs for twenty-five years and the quality dropped disastrously when production moved. These Vintage 1461s, though, feel like the real thing and look ever so much better.

If you have ever owned a pair of Doc's from the 90s you know that these shoes were build to last years. Although the current Dr. Martens look like ones of old, they don't compare to the quality of the originals. I gave up on the company when I saw they packed up shop, and moved production. When I read that Dr. Marten was going to re-issue the 1461s, once again made in England, I gave them a shot. The price was the major issue that kept me away, but quality costs money. These Docs are every bit as the ones of the past. Construction is amazing, super tough leather that resists scrapes, and soles that are very shock absorbent. Buy the originals!

I am from England & I love Dr Martens shoes. I have been wearing them for years. Anyone who cannot tell the difference between the real Made In England Dr Martens shoes compared with the Made In China or Asia shoes, has no experience with Dr Martens Shoes, especially the vintage 1461. The England ones are of good quality leather. The fit feels good and once broken in,they feel very comfortable like wearing slippers. The stitching is of a deeper yellow where,as the china ones are bright yellow. The china Dr Martens shoes are of low quality leather (did not say if they were real leather at all) They also hurt like hell. Fake looking and very shiny. The real Dr Martens are not shiny. Well worth the extra money to have the real Made In England shoes. Also Plenty of room for the feet too! I hope zappos continues to have the real macoy in stock as I have trouble getting these shoes unless I go back to London for a visit and buy them at the Dr Martens store. Cheers Kim Stewart
I'd also recommend:
Purchase the Dr Martens balm to clean them with. Helps to keep the leather looking ageless.

I run a small retail shop and am on my feet all day. I have worn them all: Ecco, Clarks, Allen Edmonds, Mephisto, etc. You name the shoe I have worn it. The British made version of this shoe is like a tank. Not all that comfortable at first, it will take a good week to ten days to break them in. But once you do, you will never look back. The leather on the British version is simple to polish and to clean, the shoe wears like iron. I am 260 lbs, and have yet to wear a pair out. I save the Allen Edmonds for days when I meet with vendors, etc. But for the average work day, these are my weapons of choice. Since I am on my feet all day, a good pair of shoes is crucial to a healthy back and legs. These, while being heavy and for some rather old-school looking, are the best all around work shoe I have ever found. And believe me, I have spent thousands on shoes over the years. I am a 45 or an 11.5 so I buy the UK 11 and they fit like a glove. The best all around work shoe I have ever found. Period. Zappos is of course wonderful, speedy shipping and the voice on the other end of the phone is always up-beat. Many thanks to Zappos.

Great shoe. True to fit. Had these shoes many years ago and have had a hard time finding them since. Not at Zappos. Found the style, color and proper width. Not to mention, next day shipping. A real pleasure to shop with Zappos.

Great shoes; too bad I had to return them. I have always liked the Doc Marten look. Unfortunately they don't fit my narrow foot. I tried them again through Zappos, but I will have to return them since there is too much movement in the heel. The movement will worsen when they loosen up. Too bad, I really wanted to have my first pair of Docs.

Great shoes. It makes me sad that the majority of Docs are no longer made in England. I made the mistake of purchasing the other 1461's and they don't even come close to these. The other 1461's were at least a half size too big, the leather was lower quality and immediately made my heels hurt when wearing them. Don't believe people when they say these are just as good. They are lower quality. I love Docs and this is my sixth pair. My first pair (purchased when I was in college in 1994) are still going strong. I have bad feet (too many years of waitressing and bartending), a bad back and bad knees. Doc Martens are extremely comfortable and never disappoint. My only word of warning before purchasing these is make sure you really want them, because they are going to be around for a really long time.

One of the best shoes ever made.
I had owned the current 1461 model and liked it so much I wear it at work and at home all the time. Much more then any other shoe. Like everyone who has given these a chance after they've bought them, it takes a short period of time to work them in and soften up the leather. You will get a little heel burn if you wear them too much right away. But, once they've worn in they seem like they mold to your feet to create your own personal shoe. Now getting to this model, the vintage 1461. I received the shoes yesterday after I got off work and noticed that they are a little bit narrower then my other ones, which I liked a lot. I do think they should of stuck to that shape with their current model then to change it. Always thought they were a little bit clunky/chunky. Really other than that I didn't notice too much difference other then the quality seemed a bit better I guess. However, when I tried them on and walked around in my house I noticed a really annoying squeak within the right shoe. Something I didn't want to settle with for the price. I decided to call Zappos customer service and asked to exchange them with a different pair. The girl on the other end was extremely nice and helpful and sent out another pair on the spot with next day shipping. When I went home for lunch today I was flabbergasted to see that the new pair was at the door. Amazing service and speed!!! Thanks Zappos a lot and hopefully I won't get that same defect in this pair. Overall with the shoes, I would say if your picky and want a narrower and better made 1461 go with these, if your not too picky go with the 1461 regulars. Both are very high quality foot wear and will stand the test of time.

Deciding between this and 1461 W?
I was trying to decide between this shoe an the 1461 W in Cherry Red. The quality of the leather was noticeably better in this version (and hence noticeably stiffer). I would have a hard time saying which I preffered in terms of style. The color is slightly lighter on this one. I got this one because I have arch supporting insoles, and they fit into this pair better.

First off I want to say that Zappos provides an incredible service with unparalleled customer service. I ordered a pair of the China made 1461's and they were real clunky looking, like clown shoes and the leather was different than what I was used to with my other Docs. Since they were a little too big I decided to get a size smaller and go with the vintage "MADE IN ENGLAND" shoes. What a difference. Much better fit and the quality of leather that I had become accustomed to with my other Docs that I had for 15 years or so. Thanks Zappos you guys are the best.

One of the best shoes ever!!!
A classic, original, and an overall amazing shoe. I can confidently say you won't find a better work shoe (unless you're looking for steel toe and are doing serious construction work). Great for people that are on their feet all day and the classic look of the 1461 is great looking. The only slight quip about them is that when you first start wearing them you might get a heel burn/blister, which other reviewers have mentioned, but that will fade shortly and after that the leather will soften and create a very nice fit for your foot. I have seen the made in England 1461's and seriously people are making too big of a deal about it. These do the job just fine. A really great shoe and I'm glad they still make them.

I am hard to fit on shoes--I tried on a pair of docs in a store and the fit nicely. These very cool stylish shoes look neat--however, the leather is so stiff that the top of my heel (where the shoe rubs) really sore!!!--As they say when the supermodels complain about their high heels—that’s what Tylenol is for!
