These are great work boots! I got them because I was looking for durability, skid resistant, and support. I found it all in this boot. It's wider than I thought it would be, but that is great for me as I have foot issues and need a nice wide toe box. I have plenty of room and can wear a nice thick sock too.

I purchased a pair of these in May 2013. The boots lasted over two years with heavy use until now, July 2015. This was my only pair of shoes, and has survived field work, chemical spills, and harsh treatment. The reason for replacement at this time is due to the sole finally tearing near the arch, exposing the leather. The good: The shoe was tough, and quite comfortable. As this is my only shoe, it wore it to somewhat formal occasions (well shined of course), and the style made it work in those situations. Survived concentrated nitric acid spill, kept toes safe. The bad: The laces are terrible. They gave way very early, and I replaced them with something much stronger. The heel broke off of each shoe around the same time in the first year. It was an easy repair, but it supports what some people say about the lower quality of Doc Martens from China. Late in year 2, the fabric liner around the heel split completely. There had been holes in it for some time, but this split was total. There was no good way to repair it, and it made the shoes slightly less comfortable to wear during this period.

Is a great boot, stylistically, essentially no break in period. I am on my second pair (thank you Zappos for the awesome customer service due to a defect) because the first pair's heel came unglued, it is not stitched too, like the front portion of the heel. Am curious to see how this pair holds up since it was made two years after the first pair. So the real verdict is out although I did notice the front corner of the heel was not properly affixed, due to my expectations. Part of the issue is it is glued to the leather upper only the leather is soft, porous and not he best medium for affixing the sole with the addition of stitching or a better glue. Time will tell with pair two, so the verdict is out and why I gave the overall rating of a 4.

I purchased these at a local retailer after searching for a nice pair of boots that had a little more detail. Born, Ecco, Columbia, etc. seem to have gone the other direction in style and fit. (My opinion. I have owned all at one point or another.) These boots were comfortable right out of the box, and I liked them enough to buy both brown and black pairs. After wearing them for a few days, I discovered that the heel had an annoying squeak and was very weak. Pushing on them with my thumb, it seemed as if there was a void in the material. I went to other retailers to check the Pier's that they had in stock and discovered that this was pretty normal across the board, so it wasn't that I had picked up a defective pair of shoes. It is more of a manufacturing issue. I loved the boots, so rather than returning them, I took both pairs to the local shoe repair and had them cut of the nice new original heels and put on some solid boot heels for minimal cost. I wear them every day with the new heels, without any issues. Hopefully Dr. Martens will fix this issue on future designs. I am planning on buying more Dr. Marten's, but will not buy any with the same soles as the Pier boots have. Any that I plan on buying will have the original type Dr. Marten's soles.

Awesome looking shoe...got the wrong size and it was missing one of the lace eyes. Look forward to getting the correct size.

The boots only took 7-10 miles to break in. They've done a great job of keeping my socks from getting packed with snow. I haven't worn them down to the point that other folks are talking of, but thus far the boots have been great for me. I'm giving an overall of 4 stars due to my hesitancy regarding how durable the boots will be over time.

I got this as a present for my boyfriend, and he loves it! Told me they're amazingly comfy, but the only problem that he had was that the area around his ankle was way too loose for him, which made the boots feel larger. He's had these for about two years now, and they still look as though they're fresh from the box, after all these seasons. Great boots.

While DM don't have widths, some lasts are wider than others. These are wide. By way of comparison, the DM Wellingtons, which do come in a wide, are not as wide as this shoe. I usually wear a 9 5E (US) in a boot; these shoes in a 9 European (equals 10 US) fit fine. As some have noted, a little loose in heel. I bought the DM insert and wrap laces once around ankle. Cannot speak to heel issue, as shoes recently purchased.

If you ever need a pair of lace-up boots but don't have time to break them in, these are the boots for you! They came out of the box almost ready-to-wear for a full day of hiking. As a bonus, they're nice and roomy in the toe box area, but not so loose in the ankle that you can't lace them tightly. Finally, like many other reviewers, I did add an insert to reduce them by half a size since I wear a 7 1/2, not an 8.

First pair had one side of one pull tab not fully sewn on. Second pair arrived 2 days later (Zappos Customer Service, you rock!) with no problems. If you find Doc Martens comfortable, you'll probably find these mostly comfortable. Arch support is minimal. One thing to note: if you're even somewhat skinny around the ankles, you will not be able to cinch these tight enough to avoid slippage, even with the "wrap your shoelaces around the back of the shoe" trick I picked up while backpacking.

I bought these a while back. The boot looks great. Feels okay. As often stated they run a tad big. The heel pulls have broken on mine though. I use them actually and they only lasted about 3 and 4 months. It not the Dr Martens quality of old.

Pretty cool looking: stylish and edgy, and the brown is a nice deep color. The toe box is very wide, so they looked a bit like clown shoes on me. Because these have an extra layer of leather stitched over the front, they look bigger than regular Docs. I tried two sizes because these run large, but even in the correct size, they were just too wide for my average width foot.

My first pair of Docs were purchased in the Sixties. Since then I have bought four or five more pairs. This is the first time I have had any kind of issue. I ordered a "9" just as I always do and this one ran quite a bit larger all around. I matched up the soles and the "Pier" was significantly longer and wider than my 1460's. I walked around a bit in them and decided to go back to my old standby - the 1460, in Tan Unrestricted this time. Zappos Customer Service (Linda) was extremely helpful during the whole process of getting a new pair ordered and crediting me the difference in price. The "Pier" is a nice looking boot but I'm going back to the 1460 for now. I still wear a pair of steel-toed Doc Oxfords that I bought 15 years ago, but they are too scuffed for anything but working on the house, cars or the Harley. My black 1460's are six years old and still look new. Take care of your boots and they'll take care of you.

I purchased these boots to assign as "the boots" for various everythings. I was so happy they were even prettier than the picture. However after only three uses the ankle support was compromised by the fact that the eyelets meet right up when you lace them over even the thickest woolen socks. Now I don't have the skinniest ankles nor the thickest but they just didn't wrap right. I gave them a little time as they were my boots-boots but I couldn't justify wearing them anymore for the fact that my feet and ankles shifted and slid around in them willynilly. I am returning them and sticking with a more traditional dr marten. Zappos was however the most accommodating and lovely customer service on the web. I'm gonna keep shopping exclusively here. Thanks.

I just wrote a review and I remembered one more thing. The heel on one of the boots began to pull away within a month. I finally had to gorilla glue it on. Again, Dr Marten quality not what it was.

Boots fit and look great, but heel comes loose as others have posted. I have worn them a year, but don't expect 5 years like the old doc's. Low durability not worth the price.

The heels separate from the soles of the boots within a few months of moderate wear (two or three days a week). I have read this from several other reviews and still decided to take my chances. I wish that I had not because exactly what other people said would happen, happened. They are good looking boots. But decide ahead of time if it is worth fixing yourself with Shoe Goo or taking them to a cobbler if/when the heel separates from the sole because that is a likely outcome.
