Here's the real deal! No problems fitting the calf area-GREAT for that! They will easily fit a larger calf. Ordering WW will increase the size of the calf as well. (IF you think you might need the extra room...but still they are generous.)These great boots do run smaller in width than stated. Order a width larger than normal. They are also a half size too big, but since there is no arch support and no cushion on the inside of the boot, you will want to order at least your normal size! This way you can add a nice insole to cushion your feet. Ordering a half size up might not be a bad idea either, if you plan on wearing them for standing or walking a lot. Your foot will slide towards the top of the boot, and if you have a wide width at the top of your feet this will be uncomfortable. I am working it out, wearing them anyway to try to break in the leather. I ordered a half size smaller than my average size because I read the reviews about the size running large. Now, I can not fit a good insole (with arch support) into the boots. But I have put a padded insole in (the slimest they have) to cushion the ball of my feet. If I don't have that padding it feels like the ball of my foot is being rubbed raw! My normal size isn't available in black so I'm sticking with it. I'll deal with the scrunched toes, as it's not too awful. (Good thing I didn't order a full size down though...wished I had been able to order my standard size or half size up for myself.) My experience with rubber soles is that they wear out quickly. So, I purchased some non-skid pads for a few bucks at a local CVS. Even though the soles are non-skid, I know I will wear out the balls of the sole fast since I'll wear them all the time! This non-skid, self-adhesive, pad is just right to prolong the life of the sole. Cheap and easily replaceable, while minimizing wear on the sole AND provides more barrier between your feet and the ground. Great leather...I do suggest treating them with mink oil before wearing to help soften and waterproof them. It also helps with the ease of using the zipper. The ankle area is a bit loose and the boots do end up coming down a bit. Almost like a slouch boot, though not quite. I don't find this uncomfortable or unattractive in respect to the shaft or foot. Sexy sexy boots...that's why I'm holding onto what I've got!

They fit! Bought these in the midst of a search for knee-high boots for a costume and in a jumble of different brands and sizes, these were the best. They fit splendidly around my too-wide calves and I'm short enough that they come almost to the knee. They do feel a little large to size and I've got that same problem with the wriggle-room in the ankle some folks have mentioned. Other than that, the only real complaint I've got is that those back laces like to come untied. Still, they're comfy, versatile, and pretty cute as well!

Tate Formula lace boot - This is a just for fun boot. It really isn't meant for a Chicago winter of slush, salt, ice, and snow, but it makes an outfit look absolutely adorable and does protect against taxi splash. If you have larger legs, this boot is for you. The leg width measurements are perhaps an 1/8" generous, but the foot width is about a full size larger.

Comfort and warmth - I am SO GLAD I got these right before the big freeze! And thank you Zappos for carrying a wide range of wide-calf boots. I got the Wide for my 18.5 calves because I don't want my feet to be swimming in a WW, and they fit really nicely. I wish the shaft can be a bit higher and the ankle more shapely/narrow, but really can't complain because they are so comfortable. I just want to say that I was very hesitant to buy these boots at first because I've never found boots that fit me, but I trust Zappos' awesome return policy so I went ahead and ordered it. So glad I did!

Like a pair of corsets for your legs - After reading other reviews of this boot, I was worried that the wide I ordered wouldn't be wide enough in the foot, and possibly give me blisters at the ankle (where I get blisters from my Doc Martens). But if anything, these boots are too wide. My foot has plenty of room, and I've even put a pair of supportive insoles in them. I have no problems with the zipper, and the ankle is flexible, but not slouchy, at least on my thick ankles. If you are blessed with slender ankles, these boots won't show them off to best advantage. My foot slips forward a little and bumps my toe against the front of the boot, which is the only reason these don't get 5 stars all around.

David Tate Formula - Returned this item. Zipper is very difficult to pull up and too close to the leather - so it gets stuck - but a beautifully well made boot.

A true wide calf boot - This boot nicely accommodates my large calves. I got a size 10, extra wide width, and they fit my 18" calves on the smallest lace-up setting, and they could get a lot bigger. I do need to wear heavy socks with them, and if a 9 1/2 had been available, that probably would fit better.

Gappy around the ankles - I have a really hard time finding boots to fit my wide calves and these were the perfect solution. Because of the laces, they can expand even further. The only problem is that the ankle area is quite loose now, so I feel like I can only wear them with long pants.

Nice attractive boot, the adjustable back/ calf laces accommodated my wide calf 16in and suede pants without ordering the wide width (out of stock). Very pleased with purchase. Although, the zipper could be better quality. It’s stiff and not very flexible.

Works for an extremely hard to fit calf - Nice looking boot. I would like it better with a slightly higher heel. My calves are extremely wide, so none of the other wide calf boots worked for me. These did because of the laces in back, they could adjust even wider. I had to get the extra wide foot to get the calf width, so they're a little more roomy on the foot than I need, but I can work with that. I am happy just to be able to wear a fashionable high boot.

I like the boot! I needed to put on a thicker sock so my foot didn't slide.

First pair of boots in a long time - I hadn't looked for boots in a long time. Have a somewhat large calf, but am sort of like goldilocks, I guess - wide calf boots too big and regular boots too snug. These boots work. I also have a wide foot. They are comfortable and look nice. I'm not particularly fond of the laces, but these were the only boots out of the 5 or so pairs I tried that fit ok. The ankle is saggy (and tightening the laces doesn't correct the problem) and the sole is a bit thin. But the leather is nice and I am glad I found them.

Good buy - For someone whose had problems finding boots that fit my calves, these were perfect. The soles could be a little thicker and the lining of the footbed is already twisting, but I am going to get gel insoles so that won’t matter. Overall a good boot.

Wish the heel was higher... This is a great boot. Very comfortable. My only wish is that it had a higher heel.

Mixed review - I loved these boots when I first bought them; I bought them very late in the season, so I've only worn them a half dozen times, and they were so comfortable and I got a lot of compliments on them. Now I'm not sure what to do, though. The lining under my left foot has torn away, and is bunching up under my heel. I really hate to give them up, because in every other respect they are really great. I have a long walk to work, and I was thrilled at the beginning because I never got a blister, and they kept me very warm. Now the bunching is bothering me... I don't know whether to return or try to fix.

I never thought I would be able to wear knee-high boots! These boots are great, but I've given it 4 stars for these reasons... First, these boots really are comfortable to walk around in, but, by the end of the day, I do feel that my legs have been deprived of circulation! Also, the look is awesome, except for the bunching at the ankle like many have said. It's not terribly noticeable, but does take away a little from the overall look. Overall, though, I would recommend buying this boot if you have wide calves. The drawstring in the back makes it absolutely great to "tailor" a fit to big calves! I also find that they make my calves look slimmer and fits great over skinny jeans! I don't think I could really be much happier. Also, Zappos great free shipping, both ways policy just makes it great!

David Tate Formula boots - I thought I'd never find a tall boot to fit me. Now I have. Being a size 5 is difficult enough, but boot makers seem to think we Size 5's don't have athletic calves and make the boot shafts too skinny. I love the adjustability of this boot. You can make your own custom fit. The heel is just right for a smaller foot too. Love it!

Genius...but needs careful size selection. I love that the laces allow you to customize the calf fit, since I have problems with regular calf boots being way too small and wide calf boots being way too big. But it might take you a few tries to find the right size/width combination. I usually wear a 12W or 12WW, so I ordered the 12WW and found the calf to be huge (even with lace adjustments) and the foot a little short. So I switched to the 13W (!), added an insole, and find them very comfy indeed. They are the only shoes I've taken with me for the holiday weekend, and even with shopping and activities, my feet don't hurt (which is saying something for me). And they're reasonably attractive, which is a bonus.

Wide Calf & Medium Width? Beware! So, I am a 9.5 medium shoe, but have 17" calves. This apparently is a problem for David Tate shoes, as the calf widths are proportionate to the foot widths. The medium shoe width apparently has a 14" circumference. That ain't going to cut it. I tried the 9.5W, but my foot and ankle was SWIMMING in the boot. So, my verdict is: they mean what they say about the calf width. If you've got wide feet and larger calves, this is probably the boot for you, but if your feet are narrower, beware!

These boots would be great for those with thick ankles. I\'m not one of them so they didn\'t work for me. They fit my wide foot and muscular calf, but there was a highly unfortunate pouching effect at the ankle. Back they go!

These really did fit my less than delicate legs. On the downside, I thought they looked chunky and were too loose in the ankle. I don't think the rounded toe helps either. They are comfortable though, so if you're OK with the look then I'd recommend the brand.

They fit, but they are not comfortable. I wore these boots for the first time last night. I was thrilled that they zipped up over my 19" calves. However, after walking 3/4 of a mile in them, the balls of my feet were aching. There is no cushioning in these boots at all and the soles should have a much thicker rubber on the bottom. I normally wear a size 10, but ordered a 9.5 based on the reviews that the boot runs large. My toes touch the end of the boot. I should have ordered a 10 and added a cushioning insole.

Sad 'no' Go - Nice look to shoe, on recommendations of a shoe store friend I ordered a wider width than my normal in other brands like Softspots. Was told this brand can be irregular??? Still fit was narrow, and shoe seemed 1/2 size short.
I'd also recommend:
Well so far the Softspots brand has been fitting me well in many styles. Wish they made a tall E-W calf boot.

I have large calves and am a true WW. Unlike some of the reviewers on here, I purchased an extra wide in order to fit my foot as well as my calf. It seems that the manufacturer knows that some people will be buying extra wide for their calves only and made them slightly narrower than a true extra wide. Without socks, which I want to wear with boots, they are a little too tight in the width. With socks, my little toe feels like it is going to fall off. Furthermore, they are at least an entire size too large lengthwise. Even with thick socks my foot is slipping up and down in the boot. I'm unsure if I will try them in a smaller size or not. I really need boots and will try several other styles to see if they are more comfortable before deciding on this one. I don't love them, and I expect that if I spend this much money on shoes they should be comfortable and attractive (these are a bit frumpy). Unfortunately, even with Zappos great selection, my options are limited.

Disappointing - I thought it would be great to customize the fit. The cons: 1) The zipper is really stiff. I suspect it will break quickly. 2) The ankle is baggy to the point that its folds rub against my skin. I am aware that the ankle is never a tight fit in boots, but usually the extra material isn't painful. The pros: 1) Foot was comfortable. 2) It fit my huge calf (17 inches with a size 6 foot - I bought the 6WW). 3) The "tongue" at the back is tacked at the top on one side so it won't fall down which I was afraid it might from reading other reviews.
