I absolutely love these shoes, except for the soft soles. My husband and I have each had two pairs . He walks normal and wears out his soles evenly, but quickly, but I over-pronate and wear out the outer edge of my sole, causing my ankles to roll outward. I have had a pair of Merrells for twice as long, and their Vibram sole has not had this issue. Because of this, with a heavy heart, I am reconsidering Keen. Other than that issue, I absolutely love these boots! I have a wide forefoot and absolutely love their wide toe box. For me there was no break in time required, they are super comfortable right out of the box. They are probably the most comfortable hiking shoes that I have ever owned. They felt like they were made for my feet. I originally wanted the low top version of these shoes, but my heel slipped out so went with the mids and did not experience any slippage. They do run small. I am normally a 7 in dress shoea or 7½ in athletic shoes. I ordered a 7½ in these and they were a little snug, so I went with an 8 and they fit perfectly!

I work at a camp, so I am outside all day every day. These shoes are very comfortable and supportive right out of the box. I did order a half size larger after reading other reviews, and they fit perfectly (although I wear an 8.5 in Merrells and a 9.5 in this shoe). The only issue I've had so far is that some water seems to be leaking in through the toe. My feet stay dry, but if I reach into the shoe I can feel that right up against the toe is wet. Other than the waterproofing issue I wholeheartedly recommend these shoes.

I waited for my review until I hiked enough miles to test these Keen Targhee II mid boots. It's true there is no break-in period needed and that's because these boots are not a stiff backpack style boot, which offers serious ankle support. They are softer and less stiff from the start and that works for me, a hiker carrying only a day pack. Although I do often hike in very rocky areas, and feel there is good ankle protection, but not a lot of firm support from twisting. I usually wear a 9 or 9 1/2 wide in street shoes, and ended up keeping the size 10. Perfect fit with plenty of toe room and width for both a liner and wool hiking sock. On my most recent hike up Mt Marcy NY through lots of mud and very wet areas my feet remained dry. I really like the laces and how they are ridged causing the bow to stick without even having to double knot it. Also I like the topmost lace hook since it's made to lock the lace in place. The only negative is that the insole is not terribly cushioned. Since I have an issue with pain on the bottom of one foot after a couple of miles, I decided to replace the insole with Spenco Total Support insoles before the last big hike, and I was glad I did. I had no foot pain at all on the 15 mile hike. Overall I'm very satisfied and would recommend these if you need a good day hiking boot with plenty of toe room.

These shoes were comfortable and ready to go right out of the box. I have foot issues and was ecstatic to find a good, supportive shoe without complicated lacing options. I would have preferred a metal speed lace, the plastic one is not speedy, but does hold the lace should it untie. I use these for barn work and so far they are holding up to the task and still look and feel good. It's been really hot and humid. I recommend an odor canceling insole for summer use if you live where it's humid. Your friends will compliment these cool-looking shoes.

This is a nice boot. I walked 6 miles on the Chicago streets right out of the box. We've had the wettest April in a decade and these boots were right in it with no problem. These run small. I had to order one size larger than I normally would for these types of boots. Not too heavy either.

Comfortable boot, but stiff and requires break in time. Wide toe box so toes can move.

Super comfortable, unfortunately I just thought they weren't quite my taste.
If I were only going to wear them on camping trips, they'd be perfect. However, I was looking for a shoe that I could wear on my long walk to work and then not be too obtrusive throughout the day, and these are just a little to loud for my taste.
In the photo they look like shoes that wouldn't really stick out much, but in real life the black toe part, and the fact that the laces go almost up to your toes, make them not extremely suitable for everyday wear.
This review probably doesn't hold for most people's use of these shoes, I just wanted to point out that they are a little more garish in real life than they look in the photo.
But absolutely one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I've tried on out of the box!

I have a wide but small foot with narrower heel, basically 6 1/2-7 1/2 fits D or EE equal to W in most brands (La Canadienne) or sometimes WW. Or I stick with wide cut brands (Gentle Souls). This is my first Keen boot or sandal. I was looking for day hiker that was waterproof and fit, period. I used the consumer search site hiking boot research from I believe summer 2009 and tried on many styles and brands they found recommended including TNF, Garmont, Lowa, Merrill but all weren't wide enough except for the Keen Targhee II Mid. I've been on one hike with them and as a new hiker boots worked well on a medium level hike. I bought 7 1/2 which fits well and I adjust with socks and laces a bit. They look cute, too. I believe durability will be fine and when I wear them out in a few years, as those with hard to fit wide feet know, I'll just buy new pair because fit in the width is my biggest issue.

Wore my boots on a trip to Chicago. Boots were warm and comfy, but eventually felt cold inside after a minor snow shower. The laces of the boots frayed after 3 weeks of constant use. Had to email the warranty dept of Keen for replacement and they mailed me one. The boots are not waterproof, but is water repellent only to a certain degree. Overall comfort is 3.5 stars. Design is 4 stars.

These boots are waterproof and lightweight. We use them from the Rocky Mtns to the wetlands of NJ. We do not wade in streams, but we go through water. My son liked mine so much we got a pair for him. (His "waterproof" Merrells were comfortable, but they did not keep his feet dry and the seams broke open. They also looked beat up after a very short time.) These are comfortable boots for light to medium weight outings. I don’t know if I would use them or my ancient heavy duty leather hiking boots if I was going backpacking. I gave 4 stars overall because they are not inexpensive and my son has only used his for one season so I don’t know what their longevity will be, although I’ve used mine over the course of two years now.

These shoes have enough room for the bunion that was developing on my right foot. They have arch support. Regarding size, my foot measures a 6.5 and a size 6 in these fits perfectly. Oddly, the 6 in the low cut Targhee felt too large. I think the extra mass around the ankle being pulled around changes the feeling of the size... or else, the low cuts actually are bigger. These are good for walking, not for running, my laces are a bit shorter than most shoes would have them, but that hasn't been a big problem yet. They seem to be great for walking in the snow and rain.

This would be a comfortable boot, but unfortunately for me, it is not wide enough. I thought Keen shoes usually ran wide which is what other reviewers have said about them, but this one does not.

Targhee II Mid -
This shoe has little or no arch support, unlike my other Keens. I love Keens in general - extremely durable and well constructed- but this is my least favorite Keen. A general improvement in all the Keen shoes would be to put the model name somewhere on the shoe; it can be impossible to replace a beloved worn-out pair with no reference in the shoe itself.

Keen Targhee II Mid -
I ordered these shoes from Zappos last week and received them the next day (Zappos is awesome with shipping!). They usually run small and I found that a 9 felt perfect, even though I usually wear an 8-8.5. They felt extremely comfortable right out of the box and weren't stiff when I was walking around my apartment. I did end up returning them though because I found that just walking around my apartment, they made my feet sweat like crazy. They do have Keen’ss form of GTX, eVent, but it didn't seem to let my feet breath at all. I'm sure these shoes would be great on the trail on a cold day, but I think they would be a little much for summer days and desert hiking.

Not totally sold -
I love the look of these shoes and had tried them on in a local shoe store before having my husband purchase them as a Christmas present for me. However, I can't wear them long without the inside part of the shoe cutting into my foot right below the ankles and extending around to the back of the foot above the heel area. It can be painful and prevents me from fully tying the shoe. So, needless to say, I haven't gotten much of any wear out of them since the holidays, which is disappointing to say the least given how great I initially thought they were. I was hoping to wear them hiking but I don't see that as a possibility. Meanwhile, I'm not looking forward to telling my poor husband this news...

I love this shoe!
I have plantar fasciitis, so I've been searching for a shoe that is supportive and not too ugly that I can wear both on my power walks in the snowy, wet Chicago weather, and as every day casual shoes. These fit the bill perfectly!

Great boots as far as comfort and grip. Wore them a total of 40hrs and they started to fall apart, stitching coming apart. Thinking about returning to try another pair because they were great to hike in.

Keens used to be the best because of the wide toe box. I don't know why they changed it but it makes me want to cry, they ruined what made them great.

I’ve lost count on how many of these shoes I’ve owned in the last three years. Part of the year I work outdoors doing heavy hiking, no trails, 4 days a week. They are very comfortable but they don’t last long. I typically buy between 1-3 pairs a year because the sole of the shoe does not last. The soft foamy portion chunks out easily and then the hard rubber begins to flap. I’ve had my most recent pair for three weeks of field work and have already lost a big chunk. I’ve tried other boots but Keen seems to be the only shoe that accommodates my long toes without any crushing or pain. They are very comfortable especially for people with long/wide toes but are not well suited for heavy off trail hiking.

This boot was narrow. I have short, fat feet. A 5 normally leaves me extra room. The 5 was so narrow at my toes that my toes went numb even with the smartwool ultra light hiking sock. I returned them and was concerned that even going up a half a size would not give me enough width. Definitely go up a 1/2 size and if you have wide feet, try another style.

I spent a great deal of time tying these shoes. No matter how I laced them, they would untie. I don't think they ever made it over 75 feet without being retied. It was very annoying and since they were loose (or untied) so frequently, they keeled over and didn't wear well. Replace the laces straight away. The foot you save will be your own.

These shoes are very comfy and sturdy and required no break-in period. However, I don't find them nearly as attractive as most other Keens, and I'd definitely stay away from the Walnut color; for some reason, the reddish leather looks worn out after only a week of wear. They look like a pair of old shoes already, which is a bummer. I spend very frugally and have to make shoes last, so paying this much for shoes that look like they've already been around the block for a year or two is mildly depressing. The shoe itself is great though, just consider a different color. I bet the others hold up better.

I have had these boots for about a year now. The review that said the sole does not grip wet surfaces adequately was right on - these boots are very very poor on wet rocks or other slick surfaces. I've hiked for many more years than I care to admit and for hiking these boots are just not adequate. They are comfortable and good looking and fine for walking on a flat trail or the sidewalk but that's about it. These are my second Keen shoe and my last. My experience with the "Whisper" sandals was similar - good looking, comfortable, but worthless off of a sidewalk and certainly not suitable for "adventures anywhere from hidden coves to rushing rivers."

I've owned a few pairs of Keens over the years for everyday use and for use as hiking boots. I would absolutely not recommend Keen for hiking, or really any intense outdoor use. My experience has been that after the second season - the boot falls apart. I'm fairly active - I walk a lot and hike a lot, but my Keens have consistently fallen apart - come apart at the seems mostly - about half way through my second season. If you are looking for a shoe that you can beat up and will last, keep looking. Otherwise you will be buying an new hiking boot before you know it.

I have been a true blue KEEN customer for years and years...however, lately their product is failing...these particular boots lasted 2 years...then completely split apart on the sides...now they leak of course and the "waterproof" brand is worthless, not to mention my foot hanging out..need to change brands I guess, as the sandals I once loved are now really inferior quality as well...sad to see Keens drop in quality.
