Having browsed a number of options for Oxfords I decided to spend a little more on these (due to some positive reviews). However I am pretty disappointed. The shoes look and fit well enough - however after 4 weeks of wearing them everyday they are still causing blisters, bleeding and pain in my feet. The leather is not supple as I had expected and wearing them in has been a long and painful process. Do not purchase if you value comfort!

I was fitting at the NYC Madison Avenue Store. Everything was great, shoe salesman was nice, and he told me it was the right width. Since i am retired I do not wear dress shoes often, but on Easter I wore them along with socks I bought at store, and the shoes ripped the skin off both my left and right big toe knuckle. Had to go to hospital for right foot injury. Don't know what I am going to do with shoes now. They do look great, but they really hurt me and unless I missed something, are not comfortable, and just felt different in the store; and on Easter of all days I get injured.

I wear these to work daily. I had size 11.5 before which were way too small but normal size. I have 12.5 now and they are still tight. I still wear them but they give me blisters and damage toenails.

Have owned several pair of these over the years. Currently on one pair the finish is "flaking". Not sure how else to describe it. Same care as all the other shoes so definitely a defect. Contacted JM and they pointed me to the 30.00 refinishing link. I will do it, but I would have expected a little more love given the margin on shoes like this.

Bought 3 pairs to rotate. Black 2 pairs were excellent. Great value for price. Burgundy pair discolored almost immediately across both toes. Left me disappointed in workmanship

The shoe looks great as far as style is concerned. Out of the box and walking around on carpet to get the feel of their fit they seemed okay. However, walking on city streets for the first time they bit severely into the feet below the ankle bone. I had to send them back because they were wrecking my feet.

Very poor quality. Not what I expected from an established name like JM. The edges of the soles were rough and visibly uneven. Who is in charge of quality control for products that are manufactured in this country?
I'd also recommend:
Too Boot NY.

I purchased 2 pairs online as the outlet store did not have the style or size I needed. I returned them as they did not fit. They were almost a size too big. Also the color of the burgundy is different that on the internet. The actual color is a deep red, almost black. I have owned 2 pair of J&M shoes for over 10 years and loved them. So I was disappointed that this re-order of the same style that I already own did not fit. I tried on a 1/2 size smaller shoe and it was too small, but the 1/2 size larger was too big--so I returned them.

Looked nice and felt good in the store however when I got home there were scratches and scuffs all along the inside and heel area. Returned and bought a pair of cole haans. Second straight pair I've returned. J&M's quality has slipped over the yrs.

If you are considering the Melton, I highly suggest you bite the bullet, take a few steps up, and get a shoe that is constructed in the US like the Georgetown. The outer part of the sole looks like it is partially melted to the leather upper in several spots, and there are dents in the upper part of the outer sole. The attached picture is just one example of three such spots on the pair of shoes. When I am in meetings or speaking at a conference, will anyone notice this? Probably not. However, when I purchase what I expect to be a pair of quality dress shoes that I will wear for 5-8 (or more) years, I expect them to be flawless in craftsmanship. Otherwise, the shoes are great. They are comfortable for a dress shoe, and I have not doubt they would last a long time, but I've seen cleaner craftsmanship in a $50 shoe.

Shoe did not fit comfortably over my instep even though it is a wider shoe then I normally buy from J&M. Shoe was size 10, EEE. Laces did not pull flaps together so that the opening over the tongue was straight. Returned shoes.

The Melton has that classic look but I was disappointed with the leather finish. I purchased the Bordeaux color, which is a deep burgundy color. As soon as I opened the box, you could see a few "red" spots in the burgundy color. I contacted J & M and also showed my local shoe repair specialist. They both confirmed that the red showing through is the actual color of the leather. The burgundy color is then sprayed on. J & M said they have been experiencing so issues with this. My local shoe repair specialist stated the problem wiyh this type of finish is that when the shoe gets scraped or nicked the burgundy color will flake off and the red will show through as that is the actual color of the leather.J & M sent me a new pair but the same issue appeared on the back of the shoes and around the eyelets.I take a 13 B, so I was pleased that J & M offered some shoes in that size but both pair will be returned. I thought [$] was enough to get a real good quality shoe, but I guess not.I will be looking Allen Edmonds to see if they have a similiar shoe but one where the shoe leather is TANNED to a burgundy color and not sprayed on. I know I will pay much more but quality is important and Allen Edmond shoes are made in U.S.A. also!!!I will continue to look at J&M as a poosible source for shoes.

Leather too shiny - I returned the shoes after receiving them because the leather was too shiny. Otherwise the shoe looked good and was comfortable when I tried them on.

Very uncomfortable shoe. And very poorly made - the tongue was sewed to the shoe on one side (as well as on the bottom) so couldn't move it out of the way to lace the shoe, put it on, etc.

I haven't had to buy dress shoes in years so I had no idea how comfortable dress shoes could be as my older ones were definitely not. I'm not only pleased with the comfort and style but the quality is excellent. Thank for a great product!

Ordered Melton cap toe shoes. Have always purchased these in the past but have not in the last 10 years. Something has changed. They don't fit as well and they're too stiff. Had to send them back for a refund. The tongue is sewn into the shoe on one side which makes it impossible to lace. Really bad.
